L E T T E R F R O M T H E D I R E C T O RWhile attending Michigan State University for Landscape Architecture I was required to take a watercolor class for rendering proposals to clients; I thoroughly enjoyed the medium and the painting challenge but found very little time to practice my personal love of the arts in the following years . However, in 1975, I was encouraged by my wife Sue to attend a watercolor class at The Clearing, in Door County . This reignited my passion for the arts .

Three years later we brought art instruction to the Dillman’s Bay Resort of Northern Wisconsin, starting with watercolorist Phil Austin . Eventually Dillman’s Creative Arts Foundation was established as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation offering as many as 100 classes annually at our three-season resort plus international ports of call . Our students and instructors have become dear friends over the years .

Ironically, in 1935 Marvin and Peg Dillman (pictured), Sue’s parents, intended to use their teaching and school administration skills to start a boy’s camp . I think they would be pleased to see the educational experiences which have evolved at Dillman’s Bay Resort .

I invite you to take advantage of the unique serene environment with your family while attending a creative art experience at the same time . Each year we are grateful to welcome new and returning instructors along with students who share bonds of camaraderie . The peaceful resort location, with 24-hour studio time, allows guests to spend concentrated time dedicated to developing their personal interests in the visual arts such as: watercolor, acrylic, oil, pastel, photography, wood carving, personal growth and nature study . There is time for your art without distraction; join us at Dillman’s in 2020 .

This class explores using the liquid paints, which gives more vibrancy to your paintings and simplifies the artist’s palette, making watercolor painting more efficient and more fun. Janet has a unique way of teaching in which adults learn best. In this workshop, everyone paints and the sessions are based on a shortened demo time and a longer hands-on painting time allowing the participant to really learn. Try a variety of techniques — some traditional and some not — to apply the paint and make it work for you. When was the last time you created foliage in a landscape with a basting brush?

MELINDA CHILDS AUGUST 23-273 TEACHING DAYS

Working on the Business of ArtNew to Dillman’s – www.artstartrhinelander.org“Work of Art: Business Skills for Artists” is a workshop series developed by Twin Cities based artist services non-profit Springboard for the Arts. This workshop is a professional development curriculum designed to teach business skills to artists in all disciplines. From marketing and recordkeeping to business planning this is a primer for all artists at any stage of their career, from new artists to seasoned professionals. We all know it’s more fun to be in the studio creating our artwork but getting a handle on the foundation of our artist run businesses is important too. This course will be interactive and will provide templates and tools to help you get your business in order.

ANDY EVANSEN AUGUST 23-284 TEACHING DAYS

Paint Bold Watercolor LandscapesReturning for the 3rd year – evansenartstudio.comStudents will focus on using value studies to identify the large shapes in a scene. These large shapes provide the artist with opportunities for lost edges when painting in watercolor. Often ‘found edges’, or details, take over the thinking process, and result in a tight watercolor. Students will move toward color paintings with lots of individual help, and complete color painting lessons together. Demos will be done by Andy every day to reinforce the lessons. In order to loosen up it is imperative for artists to have a clear vision of what they want to accomplish with their painting and then execute quickly. This class will give students the tools and confidence to do just that.

KAREN KNUTSON AUGUST 23-284 TEACHING DAYS

From Traditional to Abstract Returning for the 4th year – www.karenknutson.comIf you are wanting to step out of the box and change traditional subjects to more abstract designs, this is the workshop for you! The most common subject will be developed into an exciting abstract or semi-abstract composition. Design scares many people, but Karen has fun color exercises that make design easy! Wire drawing (the practice of using permanent markers to make things look like a wire sculpture) makes it possible to turn traditional subjects into contemporary designs. Major breakthroughs are bound to happen. Mixed media will be used, with acrylic being the main medium.

JENNIFER STONE AUGUST 23-284 TEACHING DAYS

Abstract & Figurative Paintings in Collage Returning for the 2nd year – www.jenniferstoneartwork.comCreating original collage papers to suit your needs can be fun, exciting and gratifying! In this workshop, the students will be given multiple ways to create beautiful, original collage. DON ANDREWS AUGUST 16-214 TEACHING DAYS

Color & Design in WatercolorReturning for the 15th year – donandrewsstudio.com Seasoned artists and teachers will tell you that their biggest breakthrough came when they began applying color and design concepts into their paintings. Early in our painting life we all struggle to copy nature as we see it. Painting becomes a lot of work with little reward, what’s missing is an understanding of color and design. These concepts are logical, learnable and once you have them, they’ll be evident in every painting you paint. You’re encouraged to bring along sketches or photos of your favorite subject matter, flowers, figures, boats, city streets or country scenes, etc… Each day Don will show you how to boil down any subject to a simple, exciting watercolor statement; no stress, no fear, lots of demos, laughs and personal guidance.

JANET ROGERS AUGUST 16-214 TEACHING DAYS

Impressionistic Watercolor from Flowers to FiguresReturning for the 9th year – www.watercolorsbyrogers.comFresh flowers in the studio will greet artists for the beginning of this dynamic and energetic workshop to focus on creating colors in a fun, intuitive and spontaneous way – resulting in building confidence when faced with painting people. Janet will provide drawing help to enable all levels to be comfortable as we move into painting the head and figure. NO FEAR! Then we will experience the joy of flowing on colors to produce unexpected color movement – from life and photos. Some of our goals will be capturing the gesture of our subjects, discovering design, exciting flesh tones, avoiding mud, overwhelming areas, and keeping the whites in our paintings.

MOLLY DAVIS AUGUST 30-SEPT 55 TEACHING DAYS

A New Approach to Plein Air PaintingNew to Dillman’s – www.mollydavisfineart.comThis watercolor workshop will be part plein air and part studio. If you struggle with getting dark values and rich color in your plein air watercolor paintings, then this workshop is for you. Using staining washes and committed color, the student can key their subsequent washes to obtain great results. This technique is unusual in that the student learns the unique nature of each color and how a good value structure helps avoid muddy color. Learn how to convey the immediate sense of the light which makes on location work so special. Molly is very hands on and values input from students, creating a mentorship approach within the class.

DOUG DAWSON AUGUST 30-SEPT 44 TEACHING DAYS

Pastel Landscape PaintingReturning for the 4th year – dougdawsonartist.com In this workshop Doug will cover principles and techniques he uses in his own art. Including, but not limited to, three patterns of design; how to find color solutions as you paint; how to create exciting and harmonious color. Pastel is the best medium for learning about color precisely, because of its limitations, as one can only combine pastel colors by layering one on top of another. Doug will illustrate different approaches to layering color. An important skill in landscape painting is the ability to separate space into a foreground and background plain. Students will learn the five principles used to create the illusion of depth in a painting.

Refunds will not be issued for classes missed due to illness, emergencies or events beyond our control . No-shows will not receive a refund, regardless of the circumstances . If you drop out of a class once it has started, you will not receive a refund . We reserve the right to cancel any workshop, in which case we will make a full refund . Trip cancellation insurance is strongly recommended .

Prices effective as of January 2020 and subject to change. MasterCard, VISA, Discover and American Express are accepted but personal check or cash is preferred.

We are committed to offering art workshops because we know learning is a life-long process . We recognize that even though we try to keep the instruction, lodging and meal prices low, the price may be beyond the means of some . With that in mind, partial scholarships and honorariums are offered to help off-set the cost of the workshop .

Visit www.dillmans.com/scholarship for the application . They may be submitted on-line or printed and mailed . Applications must be received by April 1, 2020 .

The scholarships are awarded to students based on financial needs . These scholarships are set up and given to those that would not be able to attend a workshop if they are not

given financial support . Honorariums do not require financial need .

Thank you to all the instructors who have offered these options and also the patrons of the arts who have made donations for this purpose . Annually over $4,000 worth of scholarships and honorariums are awarded .
