BriefFrom Stonehenge to Greek temples, architecture is the signature of humankind on landscape, the artificial element that has always been connected to the natural environment. Architecture and land-scape are linked by a fundamental continuity that is now starting to fade, damaging the quality of the space we dwell.

More than ever today, landscape is a precious heritage that archi-tecture can and must enhance, while protecting it to pass it on to future generations: architects shall not give up on working on land-scape, instead they should be able to design architectures that re-spond to each landscape’s specific feature and generates wonder-ful and unique spaces.

The “Architecture for Landscape” course was created on these premises: it aims at training designers who are able to meet the diverse needs of transforming territories, enforcing an attentive and productive dialogue with the surrounding landscape to respond to the needs of prestigious clients in outstanding contexts. Through a thorough analysis of the natural world, light and geomorphological features of terrains, the designers will become more and more able to reconnect human design to the natural environment and be in-spired by landscape to design outstanding, sustainable and impres-sive architectures.

The course will be made up of 99 hours of lessons, a 32-hour wor-kshop and multiple lectures by well-renowned professional archi-tects. At the end of the course, YACademy Placement office will guarantee each student a proposal for an internship / collaboration within the partner studios.

Program | LESSONS

Concept design8 hours 8 hours

Historical and artistic itinerary of the evolution of the concept of landscape

The genesis of a design idea

The aim of the course will be to consolidate and structure the compositional methodo-logy specific to each student. Through the course, students will have the opportunity to deepen their own way of synthesis of the va-rious requests that contribute to the project, in order todesign an original architectural proposal that responds to the set program. Enhancement of history, respect of budgets, functions, fulfillment of regulatory bindin-gs, response to technical and performance needs, definition of the user experience and prevision of related perceptions: only by responding to each one of these requests, will it be possible for the project proposal to include complex and meaningful architectu-res that do not exhaust their identity in the generic and arbitrary expression of the ar-chitect’s aesthetic orientation.

includes workshop

The course aims at offering students a se-ries of technical and cultural references useful for the development of their creativi-ty. Through the analysis of realized projects, students will get an overview of the main and most famous architectures that have defined a virtuous and fascinating relation-ship with the environment in which they were inserted. Completion of theThis course willbe completed by the testimonies of the many special lecturers and a more extensive reflection on the meanings of landscape, in-tended both as a natural reference (with real and distinguishable physical elements) and as a cultural horizon (interpreted by archi-tects, intellectuals and creatives).

Emanuele MontibellerARTE SELLA

He was born in 1959. In 1986, Emanuele Montibeller founded Arte Sella. This is a project aimed at creating a place of encounter, dialogue between artists and ideas sharing. Such project highli-ghts the importance of the Valsugana valley in the inter-national dialogue between creativity and natural world. He is artistic director and curator of cultural projects for the association Arte Sel-la both in Italy and abroad. He helped creating the route ArteNatura, which is a forest itinerary studded by works of art made by masters of the Art in nature. Some of them are Nils-Udo, Chris Drury, Patrick Dougherty, Michelangelo Pistoletto.

Art in nature8 hours

Contemporaneity in places

The course will retrace the events and methodologies tested in Arte Sella, one of the most well-known and most prestigious art parks in the world. Through the story of the installations housed in the park, and the in-depth study of the artists who worked there, the students will acquire a methodolo-gy of approach to the natural element both as a source of inspiration and as a scenario that is able of stimulating, influencing and finally welcoming the architectural interven-tion. The module will highlight the elements of continuity between landscape and human intervention, and will allow designers to ac-quire sensitivity in the interaction between what is natural and what is artificial. The experience will be completed by a moment of creative workshop oriented to reading the landscape for the setting of an artistic in-stallation concept at the park. If the weather conditions allow it, the students will have the opportunity to visit to Arte Sella.

Iacopo GozziCASALBERI

Iacopo Gozzi was born in 1984. After graduating in architecture in Milan with a thesis on the ener-gy efficiency of buildings, he directed his studies to sustainability and landsca-pe design, he obtained a specialist degree in Venice with a thesis entitled: “Living on the trees”. He lived in a treehouse for a long time. Since he was a child, he has always been in contact with nature and approached plants thanks to the family business. For about 15 ye-ars he has been dealing with the design and construction of tree houses for adult children and hotels. His company was a forerunner of the rampant architecture among the top 5 in Europe: to date, it can boast a long series of realizations instal-led homogeneously betwe-en north and central Italy. He has also actively collabo-rated in the drafting of the regional legislation for the construction of tree houses for tourism purposes.

Antonio PerazziSTUDIO ANTONIO PERAZZI

Antonio Perazzi studies at the Polytechnic of Milan and at London Kew Royal Botanic Gardens. In 1998, he opens his own studio and carries out projects and advisory activities for some of the most important architectural studios and societies of Engineering. He has carried out both private and public projects in Italy and abroad, and has wor-ked in France, Russia, India, Austria, Canada, Usa, China, Kuwait and Morocco. He was professor at the Polyte-chnic of Milan and has held lectures and workshops in many Italian and foreign universities. He works with national and international newspapers, he published “Contro il Giardino” with Pia Pera for Ponte alle Grazie and “Foraverde” for Maestri di Giardino, with a preface by Gilles Clément. For ten years now, he has published the monthly column “Busti-ne di Paesaggio” on Garde-nia.

Plants

Program | LESSONS

Building on trees6 hours 12 hours

Features and behaviour of the plants and how to choose the right ones

Solutions and technologies for suspended architectures

The course will present some case studies of tree selection and analysis of suitable species, health, phytosanitary status, ba-lance; it will also deal with the “approach to trees”, which is to say the technological systems for anchoring to plants without damaging them, systems that allow the free growth and movement of plants and wor-king techniques in plain and height. By focu-sing on the safety of trees, of operators and construction process, the students will learn about architectural design intended as the choice of materials and definition of spaces. A general outline of regulations and an over-view of case studies at national level will be offered, together with economic evaluations, such as the metric calculation and the de-finition of the cost of building a tree house. The course will finally analse the FAQs gene-rally posed by clients.

On very different scales, the landscape to-pic has gained a key role in architectural and urban design and has become an in-spiration, a tool, a decoration. Knowing the plants in their ecological features allows the designers to complete their project in its smaller details. The project is complete when it is able to relate to the territory, with a biological continuity or contrast. For land-scape designers, botanics are a tool and an inspiration: an approach to connect different environments for them to dialogue both with the artificial and natural world. During the course, decoration, useful and adaptable plants will be analyzed in connection to ma-terials and surfaces.

Federico RattaFRASSINAGO - GARDENS AND LANDSCAPES

Federico Ratta graduates in Agriculture and in Land-scape architecture in Genoa and in Turin. He is design manager for Frassinago, a Bologna -based firm which applied the Design & Build approach to thel Garden and Landscape Design field for the first time in Italy. With a specialization in high-level parks and private gardens, Frassinago has realized several projects in Italy, Switzerland, France and in the Persian Gulf. Federico collaborates in the drafting of articles for several archi-tectural publications, inclu-ding Paysage, Elle Decor and Gardenia.

The garden site6 hours

Management and realization of green areas

The course is designed as an evolutionary interpretation of a medium-high level site for a landscape project concerning a private property. Through the presentation of some case studies, the course aims at providing the cultural, critical and methodological to-ols for managing and organizing all the in-terventions that turn the project phase in a real building site. From the planning process to the daily management of all the actors involved in the realization of a garden, the course will describe the process of project realization up until the phase of the blosso-ming and further planning of the garden.

The mountains’ teaching, remote places and impossible building sites

Techniques and possibilities in building with timber

Among the main building materials, timber is used both as a cover and a structure of those architectures that are deeply con-nected to landscape. Following the specific features of the workshop topic, the course offers the students an advanced technical knowledge of the performative and structu-ral features of different materials, of the main processing techniques, use and design of timber buildings. Thanks to this course, the students will learn how to design archi-tectures which can integrate the maximum wellness for people with the issues of ener-gy saving and respect of the environment, which timber design allows to achieve and optimize.

includes visit to Marlegno

In the contemporary world, an important change of perspective makes the mountains an extraordinary field of exploration from a scientific, mountaineering and cultural point of view, increasing the human attendance of remote places at high altitudes and ma-king it necessary to create shelters such as refuges and bivouacs. These structures are the result of an extraordinary “design enga-gement”, an interesting test bench for is-sues such as the rationalization of the living space, the use of new materials and con-struction techniques, energy efficiency, the sustainability of the interventions and the relationship with the landscape. The installa-tion of an architecture at high altitudes ne-cessarily implies the resolution of complex construction and logistical problems, impo-sed by the total immersion in a glacial and mineral world, climatically and morphologi-cally extreme, materializing the most vivid manifestation of the concept of “limit”. It is precisely the need to respond to the severe boundary conditions and at the same time to make the best use of the scarce resour-ces offered by the place, that triggers the possibility of tacking constraints and critical issues in as many opportunities and design ideas, formulating knowledge, technologies, innovative construction solutions and virtuo-us cultural models, transferable even to ordi-nary contexts.

The generation of landscape

6 hours

Creating places

The expectations, weaknesses and poten-tials of the society materialize in the land-scape that was generated by it. Today the man’s constant and growing desire to inte-ract in social life and to have fluid relations is evident, but so is his desire to get in touch with nature, as a fundamental prerogative to improve the quality of life. The landscape designer’s role is to mediate between the built environment and cultivated nature, with an eye on sustainability which considers its holistic components: environment, society and economy. This course aims to provide an overview of the dynamics of landscape transformation, from the post-industrial phase to the current historical moment of digitization and the climate crisis by analy-zing international trends and policies but also landscape development best practices drawn from the LAND’s (Italy, Germany, Swi-tzerland) experience.

Principles of sustainability and bio-architecture

Ethical and circular economy, and sustainability in design

Products solutions and materials to enhance landscapepaesaggio

The course focuses on what are the ne-cessary aspects to integrate contemporary intervention on landscape, through a con-scious use of materials. Thanks to the sup-port of the leading companies in the sector, this course will offer an aesthetic, technical and performance description of some ma-terials, together with an in-depth study of methodologies for choosing them according to performance, budget, and characteristics of the specific architectural context. A se-ries of visits to the companies will provide contact with the different applications of materials and understanding the nature of the various building products also in relation to their production phases. The module will be completed with the settling the bases for the workshop project.

includes visit to Terreal and Manni Group

Designing in prestigious landscape contex-ts obviously requires a particular attention to the sustainability and biocompatibility issues. Therefore, the course will treat the main techniques and strategies to design low-impact environmental and energetic architectures (from how to choose non-pol-luting materials to sustainable design). Through an analysis of the main technical solutions on the market, the students will also reflect on the use of the natural featu-res of landscape or architectural artifacts to obtain low-energetic-impact architectures that are at the cutting edge performance-wi-se.

Sustainability is a prerequisite for those who design, and a goal to achieve by 2030 for companies. The world of design is called to an epochal challenge, even more after the Covid-19 emergency: creativity at the servi-ce of the individual and the community, in fast times and with the ongoing global com-petition. The course will extend the concep-ts of eco-compatibility from the architectural container to its interior, defining sustainabi-lity as the key of the design choices, both as an evolution of the parameters of value and the search for new materials and production processes. The course will focus on the pro-cesses that are necessary to grant a sustai-nable design, providing students with tools for the evaluation of what is proposed by the market, and to favor different business mo-dels that focus on profit for the territory and the environment before any other interest.

Design a dispersed hotel and treehouse system in the Fren-ch village of Repére

32 hours

The workshop will represent a practical op-portunity to test and recapitulate all the no-tions learned during the other lessons. It will offer strategic solutions concerning a real architectural project. The course will be con-ducted in collaboration with Le Village du Re-pére, a company that owns woods, land and an ancient village located in the suggestive countryside of Charante Maritime (France). A remote agricultural aggregate of medieval origin, the village is immersed in one of the most fascinating rural contexts in Europe: a compendium of centuries-old oak groves, vineyards and waterways, which here abun-dantly irrigate the landscape of the legendary lands of oysters and Cognac. With an abso-lutely strategic position and its proximity to the castles of the Loire, the property aims to transform the village and its 30 hectares of forests and fields into a destination for hikers, nature lovers and food and wine lovers. Sur-rounded by a sweet and welcoming landsca-pe, visitors will be able to taste the delicacies of one of the most generous regions of Fran-ce, accommodated in elegant treehouses carved out of age-old oaks, and will learn about ancient agricultural and gastronomic techniques in a modern center that will not only be focused on hospitality but on promo-ting and supporting the rich agricultural and cultural and traditional.

Program | WORKSHOP

Arrival point of the ancient via Agrippa, the town of Saintes, with its Roman ruins, the amphitheater and the monumental cathedral, is the closest urban centre to the small village of Repére. To the west, the Seudre river supplies the entire French territory with oysters and delicious seafood, while in the north the gulfs in the Rochelle area offer wonderful lagoon views pointed with with white sails and tur-quoise keels. Located in the center of a rich territorial system, the village is an oasis of peace and tranquility, not far from the tourist attractions that attract thousands of visitors every year. As for the village, it is necessary to mention the master oak woods that sur-round the property, whose powerful trees, with their own cyclopean trunks and heavy ramifications, have watched over the countryside from times well before the foundation of the village. From the fruits of these ancient and monumental trees, the more recent guardians of the village have learned to make rare flours, with which they pre-pare sweet baked products with a unique aroma and intense flavor. History, nature and tradition: with its rich wealth of values, the village of Repére represents the ideal scenario for those who want to mea-sure themselves against the composition of architectures that have a meaningful relationship with the surrounding nature.

V. Virtual attendanceFrom 2020 YACademy offers the opportunity to participate in its courses with virtual attendance. The virtual participation in courses of YACademy remotely can take place in two modes:

1. live streaming; the lessons will be accessible through the “Zoom” platform, therefore it is necessary that students have a computer with internet access; the students who take part in the direct streaming of the lessons will be given the opportuni-ty to ask questions and interact with the teachers according to the lesson delivery mode and with moderation carried out by YACademy staff;

2. deferred streaming: the lessons will be recorded and made available to students within 48 hours from their delivery so as to allow attendance to students who live in different time zones that are not compatible with the Italian classroom timetable. The lessons will be uploaded on a specific web-portal with access reserved to YACademy students. Therefore, it is neces-sary that students have a computer with internet access. The students who attend deferred-streamed lessons can send their questions to YACademy staff who will proceed to put them in contact with the teachers.

For students who have to decide to participate to the course virtual-ly, both in live-streaming and deferred-streaming modes, it is confir-med that:

3. there are no different registration/evaluation procedures or different rankings: all applicants who wish to participate in the course physically or virtually are considered equally in the se-lection and, once they are admitted to the course – either with scholarship and without scholarship - they will be allowed to decide how to join the course (i.e. physically or virtually). Howe-ver, students are asked, for logistical reasons, to indicate their preferred mode of participation in the course within their mo-

tivation letter (the preference that will be indicated is not to be considered binding for the student, who - upon confirmation of their enrollment in the course - may revise their preference);

4. the interpretation service from Italian into English will be gua-ranteed to the students who participate to the course in virtual mode;

5. the course enrollment fee for students who will be admitted without a scholarship and decide to participate in virtual mode is reduced to € 1,600€+VAT;

The students who decide to take part in the course in virtual mode:

6. will be able to attend all lessons, except for the parts of the lessons which involve a visit or a workshop (as described in the chapter “Program” of the course brochure);

7. will be able to participate in the workshop activities without any limitations (by carrying out their project revision via videocalls with the workshop tutor)

8. will have access to the job orientation service and will be gran-ted a collaboration/internship proposal with the partners of the course, provided that:

a. they have completed the workshop activity (certificated by the workshop tutor)

b. they have passed a final assessment interview (certified by a commission made up of at least 3 professors appointed by the whole teaching staff and whose final judgement is un-questionable);

With regard to the interview mentioned at point 8.b, it is specified that:

9. the interview will take place via videocall;

10. the interview will take place in Italian or English, according to the student’s choice;

11. the evaluation commission will be composed of at least 3

members of the teaching staff;

12. the assessment interview will focus on the contents of the les-sons section of the course;

13. the assessment interview will take place within 3 weeks after the end of the course (which corresponds to the conclusion of the workshop) on a date that will be communicated with at least a 7-day notice;

14. if the student is unable to take part in this assessment inter-view, a second date will be set within 15 days after the first scheduled date;

15. if the student is not available on any of the two dates, they will not have the right to access the job orientation service provided by YACademy.
