2020 Annual Catholic Appeal Come, follow me… and heal our world Please spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure that you received with your bulletin. The Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledged campaign commitment where you can make a gift payable in installments. A pledge is a promise to make a gift over a span of time. Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services to answer Jesus’ call to “Come, follow me… and heal the world.” Once we reach our parish goal of $ 33,147 in paid pledges, any additional funds come back to our parish to help fund our needs. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you who did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend.

Altar Servers—boys and girls serve at Mass. Eucharistic Ministers—help distribute the Body and Blood of Christ at Mass. Lectors—proclaim the Word of God and the Prayers of the Faithful at Mass. Music Ministry—adult and children choirs. Instrumentalists always welcome. Sacristans—set up the church and altar for Mass by preparing the hosts and wine. Spiritual Life– a committee which stimulates and supports the spiritual life of the parish in all its facets. Ushers—act as official hosts at Mass and manage the collection. Catechist—teaching the Catholic Faith to our children—grades 1 through 8. RCIA—unbaptized and baptized Christians who seek full communion with the Catholic Church. SPRED—special religious education for developmentally disabled between 17-21 years old. Men’s Club—promotes goodwill among its members, the church and the surrounding community. Women’s Guild—promotes social, spiritual and educational programs among their members. Fundraisers—parish picnic, dances, Christmas and Super Bowl Party, and other various events. Bereavement Ministry—assisting families through funeral liturgy preparation and funeral service. Food Pantry–feeding the hungry by collecting and contributing food to the St. Alphonsus’ Food Pantry. Hospitality—hosting coffee and treats in the hall after morning Masses on the 2nd Sunday of the month. Ministry of Care—bringing the Word, prayer and the Eucharist to the sick and homebound. Open Door—collections for needy throughout the year. Prayer Network—praying for the immediate needs of parishioners and others in the community. Social Justice/Advocacy—working together to end domestic and gun violence, discrimination, racism, unemployment, immigration problems and more.

ZNAJ SWÓJ KOŚCIÓŁ Nazywam się Mary Kulikowski i jestem parafianką Św. Tomasza Becketa od ponad trzydziestu lat. Jestem członkinią Rady Parafialnej i jedną z dwóch przedstawicieli dekanatu. Rada Parafialna to grupa parafian, którzy pomogają proboszczowi w sprawach planowania, organizowania, inicjowania, promowania, koordynowania i przeglądu ewangelizacji, edukacji i działań w służbie w parafii. My nie podejmuje decyzji, doradzamy i zalecamy proboszczowi jak parafia powinna działać. Jako przedstawiciel parafian, jesteśmy łącznikiem między parafianami a proboszczem. Rada składa się z 12-15 parafian, którzy spotykają się co miesiąc lub częściej. Nowi członkowie są zapraszani zgodnie z harmonogramem a rada wybiera przewodniczącego i vice -przewodniczącego do ustalania porządku obrad i prowadzenia zebrań. Omawiane sprawy podczas każdego spotkania są notowane. Nasza diecezja wymaga 2 (dwóch) przedstawicieli z Rady Parafialnej, lub wolontariuszy wybranych przez proboszcza, do reprezentowania Św. Tomasza Becketa na spotkaniach naszego dekanatu. Spotkania te odbywaja się co dwa miesięce. Dekanat to grupa przedstawicieli współpracujących z biskupem diecezji. Spotkania dekanatu odbywają się w różnych parafiach w naszej okolicy. Spotkania te mają również jedynie charakter doradczy i informują przedstawicieli o zmianach lub problemach w poszczególnych parafiach. Omawiane tematy są przekazywane Arcybiskupowi Cupich. Powyżej opisane Rady to tylko część z wielu struktur działających w naszej diecezji Chicago. Więcej informacji na temat innych działających organizacji przedstawię w przyszłych biuletynach. Każdy z nas ma różne talenty i jest powołany do służby. Szczególnie w ten weekend, kiedy nasza parafia przedstawia działające i służące grupy, prosimy o modlitewne rozważenie i zaangażowanie się w naszej parafii, może jako: szafarz komunii, lektor, marszałek, ministrant, itp.

KNOW YOUR CHURCH My name is Mary Kulikowski and I am a St. Thomas Parishioner for over thirty years. I am also a member of the Parish Pastoral Council and one of two Deanery Representatives.

The Parish Pastoral Council is the group of parishioners who serve the pastor in a leadership, visionary, and advisory capacity in matters of planning, organizing, initiating and promoting evangelization, worship, religious education/formation and service activities in the parish. This group does not make decisions but researches, advises to the pastor and recommends changes and/or additions within and for the parish. As a representative of the

parishioners, we are the connector/communicator between the parishioners and the pastor.

The Parish Pastoral Council consists of 12-15 parishioners, meeting monthly throughout the year or more often if major issues arise. New members are added on a scheduled basis by discernment and the group elects a chairperson and co-chairperson to set meeting agendas and chair the meetings. Minutes are recorded and reviewed at each meeting.

The Archdiocese of Chicago requires 2 (two) Representatives either from the Council or parish volunteers selected by the pastor to represent St. Thomas Becket at the bimonthly meetings of our Deanery. Deanery is the group of representatives reporting to the Archdiocese Pastoral Council of Chicago led by Archbishop Cupich. Deanery meetings are held at various parishes in our area. These meetings are also only advisory and inform the representatives of changes, issues, concerns and activities of the individual parishes. The issues, etc. are then communicated to the Archbishop via elected representatives from each Deanery at the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council which also meets bimonthly throughout the year.

This is only a small part of the organization of the governing structure within our church--the Archdiocese of Chicago. Further organization of the Archdiocese will be presented in future bulletin articles.

On the occasion of this weekend’s Ministry Fair, please consider becoming involved in the life of our parish as perhaps: eucharistic minister, lector, usher, minister of care, bereavement minister, etc...

Question: Why is it so important that we

register in a parish? Isn’t it good enough that we go to Mass?

Answer:

Registration is the official way we join a parish community. Many people think that because they attend a particular parish they automatically belong. At times, young adults who have moved

away for years think they are still signed up under their parents. But membership requires signing up,

formally enrolling yourself in a parish. Registration is a

commitment to a community, a way to be included in the religious, social, and ministerial activities of

your parish. Your registration affects the parish in many ways. Census numbers can determine

how many priests are assigned to a church, what benefits and

obligations the community has to the diocese, and how Masses,

Confessions, and devotions are planned and scheduled.

Registration shows you belong. It is also necessary for certain

benefits, like scheduling sacraments, obtaining sponsor

certificates, and getting donation statements for taxes. Most

importantly, it lets the parish count on you, to call on you to

assist in its mission. Registering in your parish is a statement of faith

and confidence in the life and work of your parish.
