A LOOK AT THE 2020 SEASON

joined by left tackle Thayer Munford. The Cincinnati native has started 26 games over the past two years and played in 38 of 42 contests since 2017.

GROUND ATTACKDavis, Myers and the rest of the off ensive line will be blocking for a new starting running back after J.K. Dobbins was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the third round of the NFL Draft. Coach Tony Alford’s room includes third team All-Big Ten selection Master Teague, sophomore Marcus Crowley, redshirt freshman Steele Chambers and Oklahoma gradiuate transfer Tre Sermon, who had over 2,000 yards rushing in three seasons with the Sooners.

EXPLOSIVE OFFENSESOhio State’s average of 529.9 yards of total off ense last season ranked fourth in the country. The Buckeyes have ranked in the top 10 in total

    FIELDS

Coming off a season that saw them win their third consecutive Big Ten title and appear in the College Football Playoff s for the third time in six season, the Ohio State Buckeyes kick off the 131st season of football on Oct. 24 with their sights set on big things in 2020.

FIELDS DIRECTS HIGH-POWERED OFFENSEIn his fi rst year as a starter for Ohio State in 2019, Fields put together one of the greatest statistical seasons by any Ohio State player ever. He became the fi rst quarterback in Big Ten history with 40 passing touchdowns and 10 rushing TDs in the same season on his way to being a Heisman Trophy fi nalist. Fields threw for 3,273 yards, completed 67.2 percent of his passes and had a nation’s-leading 41-to-3 touchdown to interception ratio.

Fields was at his best against the best. In the Big Ten Championship Game against No. 8 Wisconsin, he throw for 299 yards and three touchdowns while leading the Buckeyes back from a 21-7 halftime defi cit to win 34-21. One week prior at rival Michigan, Fields tossed four touchdown passes and throw for 302 yards in a 56-27 victory. In six games against teams ranked in the fi nal College Football Playoff poll, Fields accounted for 17 touchdowns and averaged 280 yards per game of total off ense.

DAVIS & MYERS: BALLERS WHO ARE MAULERSCenter Josh Myers and guard Wyatt Davis are unquestionably two of the best interior off ensive linemen in the country. Davis is on every preseason All-America list while Myers will be a candidate for the Rimington Award, which goes to the nation’s top center. The duo paved the way for an off ense that averaged 529.9 total yards per game – No. 4 nationally – and 266.7 yards per game on the ground – No. 5 nationally.Myers and Davis are two of Ohio State’s three returning starters on the line,

Justin Fields was a fi nalist for the Heisman Trophy last season as a fi rst-year starter, throwing for 41 touchdowns and just three interceptions.

off ense in each of Ryan Day’s three seasons in Columbus (2017 – seventh; 2018 – second; 2019 – fourth). Since Day’s arrival, only one Power 5 team (Oklahoma) has averaged more yards per game than Ohio State (523.8).

NEW STAFF MEMBERSThere are two new members of the Ohio State coaching staff this fall, although neither of them are new to Ohio State. Kerry Coombs, who coached cornerbacks and special teams for the Buckeyes from 2012-17, returns after a two-year stint in the NFL and will be the team’s defensive coordinator while also coaching the secondary. He replaces Jeff Hafl ey, who was hired as Boston College’s head coach last December.

Corey Dennis, who has spent the last fi ve seasons in a variety of roles on Ohio State’s staff , was promoted from senior quality control coach to quarterbacks coach in January. He’s worked closely with Day since 2017 and helped to produce some of the school’s most prolifi c off enses.

PLENTY OF EXPERIENCE AT LINEBACKERThe Ohio State defense, which must replace seven every-game starters from a unit that allowed just 13.6 points per game, has its most veteran presence at linebacker, where Pete Werner and Tuf Borland return after starting every game last season. Coupled with Baron Browning and Justin Hilliard, the unit has 68 combined starts among them.

14 EARLY ENROLLEESOhio State welcomed 14 members of its 25-person recruiting class to campus in January as early enrollees. It’s the most early enrollees in program history. Ohio State’s 2020 recruiting class fi nished ranked No. 5 nationally by 247Sports.

WELCOME BACK, COOP!Fifth-year senior DE Jonathon Cooper, a captain and one of the best leaders on the team, will return for a fi fth year in 2020. A Gahanna, Ohio native, Cooper has played in 38 career games with 51 tackles, 11.5 tackles-for-loss and 6.5 sacks.

WADE RETURNS IN THE SECONDDARYAfter producing a pair of fi rst-round NFL Draft choices at cornerback last season, the Buckeyes will retool its secondary in 2020 but has the services of CB Shaun Wade, a 14-game starter in 2019. A third team All-Big Ten selection, he had 26 tackles, four tackles-for-loss, one interception, two forced fumbles and eight pass breakups.

Ryan Day is in his second full season as head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes. He enters the 2020 campaign with a career record of 16-1, a 10-0 mark in Big Ten Conference games, a Big Ten championship (2019) and College Football Playoff appearance (2019).

Day is the fi rst Ohio State coach in 40 years to be named Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year, and he earned the honor in 2019 by coaching, developing and leading one of the best teams ever in school history. His 2019 Buckeyes were dominant, winning 13 consecutive games by an average of over 36 points per game. The team ranked in the Top 5 of 12 major NCAA statistical categories, including No. 1 in total defense, No. 1 in pass defense and pass effi ciency defense, No. 1 in off ensive third down pct. and No. 4 in total off ense.

The 2019 Buckeyes became the fi rst Big Ten team ever to win three consecutive outright Big Ten titles and the team advanced to the College Football Playoff s for the third time in the six-year playoff history. Day’s 13 victories in 2019 are tied for the most by a fi rst-year FBS head coach and he is the fi rst coach to win 13 games without the benefi t of a bowl victory. The Buckeyes were ranked among the nation’s Top 5 in 14 of 16 weeks.

Individually in 2019, Day coached a third consecutive Big Ten Quarterback of the Year (Justin Fields) and his program featured the

Dobbins), two Heisman Trophy fi nalists (Fields and Chase Young) – only the sixth time this has been accomplished – and four fi rst-team All-Americans (Wyatt Davis, Dobbins, Jeff Okudah and Young). He was considered for virtually every national coach of the year honor and was named the fi rst-year Coach of the Year by the Football Writers Association of America.

Day’s ImpactThe impact Day has had on the program in such a short time has been considerable.

No team has more passing touchdowns the past three seasons than the 138 that Ohio State quarterbacks have thrown in that time. Ohio State also ranks 11th over the past three seasons in passing yards per game (296.7) and third in completion percentage (67.8).

Ohio State is 38-4 and has won eight championships in Day’s three years with the program: three consecutive Big Ten Conference championships; three Big Ten East Division titles; the 2018 Cotton Bowl and 2019 Rose Bowl.

It established Big Ten Conference records for off ensive yards per game (535.6), passing yards (5,100), passing yards per game (373.0), touchdown passes (51), completions (396) and total plays (1,131).

Individually, quarterback Dwayne Haskins was a Heisman Trophy fi nalist who became just the sixth player to throw 50 touchdown passes in a season. He was named the Chicago Tribune Silver Football Award winner as the Big Ten’s best player and he was also voted the Big Ten’s Off ensive Player of the Year and its Quarterback of the Year.

Day is a native of Manchester, N.H. He was a three-year starting quarterback at New Hampshire when Chip Kelly was the off ensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He was a team captain as a senior and earned his degree in business administration in 2002. He has a master’s in administrative studies from Boston College (2004).

Overview: Matt Barnes is in his second season as a member of the Ohio State coaching staff and coaches the team’s safeties and also serves as special team’s coordinator. He was hired by head coach Ryan Day in January of 2019 after spending the prior three seasons coaching at the University of Maryland. Barnes has 12 years of collegiate coaching experience.

Buckeye Specialists: In 2019, Barnes helped develop outstanding special teams play and defensive backs on a 13-1 Ohio State team that won its third consecutive outright Big Ten Conference championship. Ohio State’s defense led the nation in fewest passing yards allowed (156.0 per game) and in pass-effi ciency defense with a rating of 97.50.

Terrapin Special Teams: Under Barnes’ guidance, the Terrapins ranked 18th nationally and third in the Big Ten with a 23.9 yard average on kickoff returns. Maryland had two players – Ty Johnson and Tavion Jacobs – who averaged better than 25 yards per kick return and ranked in the top fi ve in the conference in yards per return.

Notable Notes: Barnes arrived at Maryland after spending the 2015 season at Michigan as a defensive analyst and also had a three-year stay at Florida (2012-14) as a defensive and special team’s graduate assistant. He also has experience on the other side of the ball, spending the 2011 season as the off ensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at West Virginia Wesleyan College.

Overview: Tony Alford, who has coached collegiate running backs for over 20 years, is in his sixth season as assistant head coach for off ense and running backs coach at Ohio State University.

The 1K Club: Alford’s latest star player at running back, J.K. Dobbins, became the fi rst running back in Ohio State history to surpass 1,000 yards rushing as a freshman, sophomore and junior. He set the school record for freshmen running backs with 1,403 yards in 2017 and just last season set the Ohio State single-season record with 2,003 yards. His total of 4,459 yards ranks second in Ohio State history.

Best in the Business: Alford was the No. 5 rated recruiter nationally in 2018 by CBSSports.com. He was a Rivals.com Top 25 recruiter in 2011 and 2015 and he was a fi nalist for 247Sports’ 2011 National Recruiter of the Year.

Notable Numbers: Alford has coached a 1,000-yard runner in each of his fi rst four seasons with Ohio State: Ezekiel Elliott (2015), Mike Weber (2016), J.K. Dobbins (2017, 2018 and 2019). He has also coached two major award winners: Elliott won Big Ten Conference off ensive player of the year and Chicago Tribune Silver Football Award honors in 2015 when he barreled through a 1,821-yard season and scored 23 touchdowns; and Weber was the league’s Freshman of the Year in 2016.

Overview: Kerry Coombs was named defensive coordinator on Jan. 20 by Ohio State head coach Ryan Day. Coombs, who has spent all but two years of his life in the state of Ohio, returns home after spending two successful seasons coaching cornerbacks for the NFL’s Tennessee Titans. He had previously coached at Ohio State for six seasons from 2012-2017.

NFL Experience: Over the past two seasons with Tennessee, Coombs helped the Titans produce one of the league’s top secondary units. In 2018, it ranked sixth in passing defense (216.9 yards/game), eighth in opponent passer rating (88.4) and ninth in opponent completion percentage (.632).

Coombs’ First Ohio State Tenure: Coombs’ fi rst go-around with the Buckeyes was a remarkable one, evident by the fi ve fi rst-round NFL draft choices that he developed between 2014 and 2018: Bradley Roby (2014, Denver Broncos), Eli Apple (2016, New York Giants), Marshon Lattimore (2017, New Orleans Saints), Gareon Conley (2017, Oakland Raiders) and Denzel Ward (2018, Cleveland Browns). Every starting Ohio State cornerback in Coombs’ six-year tenure reached the NFL.

Notable Notes: From 2012 through 2017, Ohio State was second nationally with 101 interceptions and fi rst with 17 that were returned for touchdowns.

High-level Quarterback Play: These past two seasons have been two of the most celebrated off ensive campaigns in recent school history, with two Ohio State quarterbacks – Dwayne Haskins in 2018 and Justin Fields in 2019 – becoming Heisman Trophy fi nalists as well as Big Ten Quarterback and Player of the Year. The duo combined for 91 touchdown passes.

No Stranger to Ohio State: The 2020 season will be Dennis’ sixth on the Ohio State coaching staff .
