The Colorful History of Synthe c Organic Pigments Used in Color Cosme cs Posted on May 15, 2019 by Kelly Dobos

Azo chemistry is one of the most widely used methods of making synthe c dyes and      pigments. The term azo refers to a nitrogen double bond within the molecule. The          discovery of nitrogen is a ributed to Daniel Rutherford who was the first to isolate the gas and demonstrated that it was an asphyxiant and did not support combus on. Azo is        abbrevia on for azote, the name proposed by French chemist Antoine Lavoisier for the  element nitrogen. Azote derives from the Greek a (not) and zoe (to live).  William Henry Perkin is credited with the discovery, albeit accidental, of the first synthe c organic dye called mauvine in 1856. The key to synthesis of mauvine was analine, an       aroma c amine. In the 1800s, the burning of coal became an important source of heat and light in many European and American ci es. Burning of coal leaves behind a viscous, brown liquid that was called coal tar because it resembled the pine tar.   In failed experiments aimed at making quinine, Perkin created the bright purple dye from coal tar derived benzene. During a  me when most fabric dyes were based on natural sources that were expensive to produce and highly variable in quality, Perkin patented the dye making process and promptly reigned from college in order to set up the business of manufacturing the dye.   Many new dyes were synthesized from aniline, eventually leading to the development of azo dyes. Synthe c organic pigments are some mes referred to as coal tar dyes today, but the term is outdated as modern cosme c dyes are prepared from petroleum dis llates. Azo pigments account for most of the red, orange, and yellow pigments used in cosme cs including Red 6 and 7 Lakes.   A quick look at the FDA’s reports on total pounds cer fied reveals Red 6 and 7 lakes are the most widely used. This is due to their bold hues, excellent economic value, and good stability proper es. They are the two main colorants used to create bright red lips cks and nail polish with Red 6 being a yellow‐shade red and Red 7 a blue‐shade

SWSCC Member Spotlight— Robert Vetkoetter

Interviewed by Gail Harris

Where were you born and raised?

In the Dallas area

Where did you go to college and what was your major?

Indiana University – Criminology St Louis University Law

What was your first job as a teenager and after college? Teenager – Maintenance, Room Service, and General Gopher at a hotel in Athens,

Texas After College – St. Louis Public Defender’s office

How did you get into the cosmetic industry?

I didn’t want to be the only family member left out!

27

What exactly do you do?

Anything from take out the trash and sweep the floors to selling raw materials, so whatever is needed to keep the lights on.

What is the most interesting part of your job?

The unpredictability – you may think you will be working on one thing when you start the day, but never get to it because other things take priority. I could never have a desk job filling out

TPS reports all day. My brain requires variety.

What do like most about your job?

I went to law school to help people, and I feel like I achieve a similar goal in this job, just a bit differently

SWSCC Membership

How involved are you in SWSCC?

I try to be involved as much as my schedule allows, although my recent meeting attendance has been spotty. I try to help whenever I am asked to participate.

Most memorable SWSCC event?

The Ice Bowl Holiday Party! I was the Chair Elect that year, so I had to organize the event. Despite the ridiculous weather, all of the entertainment showed up and about half of the

guests. I think those that attended had a great time!

Do you golf in the SWSCC Tournament?

I do play in the event. My round usually consists of trying to hit a shot from wherever Randy Ptasznik’s shot just landed.

SOCIETY OF COSMETIC CHEMISTS

28

Do you have children? Pets? I have 6 children, 4 that walk on 2 legs and 2 that walk on 4 legs

What have you read lately?

Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann–

I still have to get my criminal law fix

What is your favorite book?

Anything by Malcolm Gladwell

Talent or hobby that most people are not aware of?

I coach competitive youth baseball

Scariest thing you have ever done?

Father of twin boys

Favorite sports team?

Indiana Hoosiers basketball and the local Dallas teams

Favorite food?

Seafood (I probably need to move to the coast to fully realize this potential)

29

Favorite TV show?

I would have answered Game of Thrones before the last season ruined it. I still like watching Survivor with my kids to hear their takes on the social dynamics.

Favorite movie? Forrest Gump

Favorite Musical artist?

It’s difficult to pick just one, but I will go with the Pixies.

Last 3 concerts you attended? U2 Joshua Tree Tour, Paul McCartney, and the Griffin Middle School Band (they put on

a great show!)

Favorite Vacation destination? I like to explore new places, so any place I have not seen before. I try not to go to the same

place twice.

Most memorable road trip?

Cramming into a customized van with other family members, friends, and teammates of my dad’s softball team to travel to out of town tournaments. We basically traveled like a

group of Hippies, but the sculpted carpet and house stereo my dad installed in the interior classed it up a bit.

Make sure you renew your SWSCC membership so you can enjoy all the

benefits of being a member!

A question gets asked of us why do we have to

register for events. We have to give the venue a week’s notice how many

people will be attending for food count and seating. If

you don’t register, we might not have enough seating or food for the

entire group.
