PROFILE

Patience Kovane’s study explored indigenous birthing practices of Traditional Birth Attendants (TBA) and their role in childbirth practices. It was important to determine experientially whether selected Traditional Medicinal Plants (TMP’s) used by TBA’s demonstrated the presence of uterotonic bioactive markers such as cyclotides. The qualitative phase consisted of focus group discussions and individual in-depth interviews conducted in Lesotho and in South Africa. The project confirmed the important role played by TBA’S in communities and reported on traditional practices used to assist women during labour and birth to prevent PPH such as to blow in a bottle to assist delivery of the placenta. None of the scientifically tested TMPs demonstrated presence of cyclotides. This does not mean TMPs do not prevent PPH, but merely that the specific tested TMPs did not consist of specific uterotonic bioactive markers such as Cyclotides. It is recommended that policymakers should promote the exchange of IK and its integration into a primal healthcare system to preserve valuable, non-harmful traditions by integrating TBAs into the current primary healthcare services as primal healthcare to decrease maternal and infant mortality and reduce poverty.
