Statement by Chair of the Board

There is little else that needs to be said about 2020 and the impact the global COVID-19pandemic had on us all. There is no individual, group, business, organisation, club, sector, industry, or institution that has not been affected in some way, with the impacts being well-documented.

As WRAS Chair, I am incredibly proud of how everyone involved with the organisationresponded.

Coaches, managers and other squad staff adapted their programs to accommodate lockdownprovisions. Athletes and their families embraced the ‘new normal’ of online Zoom sessions andthe use of a broad range of other online tools. Our administration team seamlessly transitionedinto a remote ‘work from home’ operational model and we got on with the job, as best we wereable.

I would like to acknowledge the stakeholders and organisations recognised by our ExecutiveOfficer in her report. Their support during the year was unwavering.

Importantly, I must thank the NSW Government for not forgetting the Regional Academiesduring the crisis. Through the Office of Sport, WRAS was kept informed with regular, concise, and accurate information that was consistent with the messaging emanating from othergovernment agencies. This ensured WRAS was able to be fully compliant with the various PublicHealth Orders issued by NSW Health.

Thank you also to my fellow board members, Deputy Chair Mick Bell, Dr Melissa Skein, Cr ScottFerguson, Brian Cobcroft, Carmen Dwyer and Tim Findlay. 2020 presented many challenges andI appreciate the support you have shown Candice and myself across the year.

Finally, a nod to our office team. Candice, Tanya, Vittorio and Nicole have done an amazing jobin extremely challenging circumstances over the past 12 months. Their efforts most certainlyhave not gone unnoticed.

As we move into 2021, we look forward to a year of celebration as we recognise our 30thAnniversary. I cannot think of a better way to close the book on 2020 and kick off the nextphase of the WRAS story!

Statement by Executive Officer

2020 has been a challenging but successful year for WRAS. Like all Organisations, we felt theimpacts of COVID-19 with so many significant events on our programs cancelled as per PublicHealth Orders.

In 2020, WRAS conducted squad programs for AFL, basketball, cycling, golf, hockey and netball.Individual scholarships were awarded to 3 high performance, 8 lone star and 3 para-sportathletes.

Whilst major events such as the Your Local Club Academy Games, WRAS Presentation Night andthe Greater Bank Academy Challenge were all cancelled due to COVID, our programs neverstopped running through the COVID lockdown. We increased communication with our athletesoffering online webinars with industry experts, elite athletes and coaches, and organised socialmedia challenges to keep our athletes active and engaged.

On behalf of the Board and staff of WRAS, I pass on my utmost thanks to our volunteer squadstaff for the additional work and training they have undertaken to ensure safe implementationof COVID safe practices allowing training opportunities to continue for athletes.

I want to acknowledge an important partnership that the Regional Academies of Sport (RASi)secured in 2021, formalising an agreement with the NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS).A triumphant partnership that hits close to home for WRAS, having seen 7 graduate athletesprogress to NSWIS scholarships within the last 12 months.

Thank you to our major partners, the NSW Government, Charles Sturt University, Clubs NSWincluding Bathurst Panthers and Bathurst RSL, local councils and Greater Bank. With yoursupport, WRAS continues to provide opportunities and pathways for regional athletes andcoaches.

I look forward to welcoming 2021, the year WRAS celebrates its 30th anniversary. We lookforward to celebrating with you, our valued stakeholders and supporters.

With thanks,

Candice

The ClubGRANTS program has provided much needed financial assistance for athletes in WRASprograms.

From 2003 Bathurst Panthers and Bathurst RSL Club and from 2006 Orange City Bowling Cluband Orange Ex-Services Club have provided ClubGRANTS to assist WRAS athletes.

Over the past 18 years, 524 junior athletes from the central west have been supported by theselocal Clubs, ensuring the athletes selected on their potential can participate in the pathway tohigher representative selection. With ClubGRANTS support these athletes may not have been apart of the WRAS program that provide opportunities not necessarily available to most regionalathletes.

ClubGRANTS funding has helped athletes with:

• Reduced athlete levies for their WRAS program

• WRAS uniform costs

• Travel and accommodation to attend high performance camps and competitions.

Each year the WRAS athletes who have benefitted from this assistance write a thank you letterto the Clubs. The extracts on the right of the page show how much being part of the WRASprograms means to them.

Thank you to the generous local Clubs that have helped the WRAS athletes.

ATHLETE TESTIMONIALS

“The WRAS program has taught me so many things, being part of a team

environment, learning new life skills and it’s given me a drive to succeed in

making higher level teams again in my hockey career” – WRAS athlete

“Being part of the WRAS program is more than just a badge on a wall, it is a

steppingstone to going further in the path towards International events and

the Olympics. The program has given me opportunities to develop myself in

ways which I would not know of without the program. Their training camps

have also aided in the technical side of competing along with the use of

those facilities used at the high-level events” – WRAS athlete
