JEAN HINCHLIFFE Australian School Climate Strike leader and Year 12 Student (Fort Street HS, NSW)

Jean Hinchliffe is a climate justice activist and organiser within School Strike 4 Climate, and a year 12 student at Fort Street High School. Jean began her activism at age 13, when she volunteered with the Yes campaign for marriage equality. Since then, she has also worked with organisations such as GetUp! and Stop Adani. Jean’s first book, ‘Lead the Way: How to change the world from a teen activist and school striker’ was published by Pantera Press in March 2021.

WELCOME

PRESENTERS

It’s terrific to be returning to the Sydney Town Hall for the 2021 Proudly Public Awards.

After many months apart, tonight we are able to come together again to celebrate the enduring values of Australian public education. The last year has tested these values like nothing in living memory, and public schools have passed with flying colours.

Character and resilience are two of those values that have shone through, and they’ll be on display again tonight in the stories of our winners. You’ll also witness excellence – in the performances, the speeches, the personal stories.

You’ll be entertained by the Southern Stars of the NSW Department of Education, inspired by public school student and teenage climate activist Jean Hinchliffe and guided by journalist and radio/TV presenter Tom Tilley.

Of course, the evening is also an opportunity to show our gratitude to the many wonderful supporters of public education – the individuals, foundations and companies who give generously to make these scholarships possible. On behalf of all our winners and their families, I know you’ll join me in thanking them.

If there’s one thing I’d ask you to take away tonight, it’s this… don’t be reluctant to fly the flag for public education. Too often in public schooling, we hide our light under a bushel so next time you’re in a conversation about schools, remember the stories you’ve heard here tonight and the exceptional things that take place in your own school, and give a big wrap to public education.

Be Proudly Public!

David HetheringtonExecutive Director

P.S. If you’re inspired by tonight’s show, please visit publiceducationfoundation.org.au to watch, share or donate!

Monday 31 May 2021

Prior to this, he was the longstanding host of triple j’s current affairs show Hack, a contributor to Channel Ten’s The Project and a reporter for ABC’s Foreign Correspondent. This scholarship will enable me to be a positive role model to my family, community and school. I am grateful that this scholarship can break down those financial barriers that can at times limit my access to extracurricular, school activities and keep me well connected to my culture and community.YEAR 11 GO Scholarship recipient

This scholarship will help me obtain a laptop among various other school items (e.g. textbooks and binders), which normally would require my dad to pay for. On occasions, finances have gotten tight and my dad has struggled to pay for everything including school. The 1000 dollars would benefit greatly in easing the financial pressure placed upon my dad and better both his and my situation. GRIFFIN HAINESAboriginal Education Council Scholarship recipient

As we’ve grown to become one of Australia’s largest mutual banks, with over 210,000 members and more than $9 billion in assets, two things have never changed, our passion for a thriving education sector and helping educators achieve their professional and financial goals.

We’re proudly a market leader in member advocacy and committed to strong standards of corporate responsibility, so we’re delighted to sponsor two professional development scholarships in partnership with the Public Education Foundation, just one of the many ways we support the education sector.

AWARDS 2021

As a beginning teacher, the scholarship awarded means a lot. Speaking with other teachers at my site, opportunities like this weren’t offered when they were starting out as teachers, so it really is a huge privilege to have been successful in receiving the scholarship from Teachers Health. It provides me with a great opportunity to experience professional development in a variety of settings and further my professional knowledge.DAMIEN NICHOLLSMylor Primary School, South AustraliaTeachers Health Early Career Scholarship recipient
