• Mill Hill School was founded in 1807 by non-conformist educational pioneers• The Mill Hill School Foundation comprises our Pre-Prep, Grimsdell; our Prep,

Belmont, Mill Hill International and our most recent addition, Cobham Hall School, in Kent. Our Mill Hill based Schools are located in over 150 acres of parkland just half an hour from central London.

• All five Schools are united under the Mill Hill banner, with a smooth transition between Schools and a sense of being one family

• We share the goal of ‘Instilling Values, Inspiring Minds’ which is reflected in our strong sense of community and our forward-thinking approach to education, in which the academic and the co-curricular provide a challenging and stimulating environment in which to learn the skills which will play a key part in future success and happiness

• We seek to develop these skills through a wide range of co-curricular activities such as debating, robotics and the Combined Cadet Force and an emphasis on sports, music and drama

• Mill Hill School, from September 2021, comprises 885 pupils, with around 88% Day and 12% Boarding (Full and Weekly)

• Millhillians go on to pursue a wide range of courses at university and are encouraged to find their intellectual and/or vocational passion, with many achieving places in highly competitive courses and institutions

• Our Sixth Form Centre provides a stepping-stone to the next stage in the educational journey, with recreational and study space appropriate to young adults, incorporating Careers and University Application support

• Our Day House system provides a home from home for every Day pupil, with eight Houses of 80-90 girls and boys each benefitting from the support of both a Housemaster/mistress and a Tutor who takes the lead in pastoral responsibility for around 15 pupils in their care. Each Day House comprises a spacious games room, a quiet study room, locker storage space and the Housemaster’s/mistress’s office

• Mill Hill School and Mill Hill International integrate their 190 boarders across four Boarding Houses which offer the option of girls-only, mixed boarding, conveniently located just a short walk from the School buildings. With over 30 nationalities, including a significant number of local weekly boarders, boarding offers a truly global insight to the pupils in this part of our community

• Mill Hill School offers a happy and friendly co-educational environment; pupils are genuinely enthusiastic about being at School and thrive in an atmosphere which is both supportive and, in a positive way, challenging. The boy-to-girl ratio in Mill Hill School is around two thirds boys to one third girls

• Millhillians are great believers in ‘giving something back’, as reflected in our strong links with the community - including the London Academy of Excellence Copthall School, as well as our overseas partnerships in Tamil Nadu and Zambia and regular charitable fundraising activities

• Our active and extensive alumni association, the Old Millhillians, offers our former pupils life-long membership of a worldwide club which facilitates social and professional networking and fosters a sense of belonging long after pupils leave school

• Mill Hill School believes in preparing pupils for life now and in the future with, a range of creative, entrepreneurial, technical and original projects for all four Schools

Sports AwardsA number of Sports Awards are made annually. Candidates will be required to provide evidence of their sporting ability by the presentation of a sporting CV and a letter of recommendation from their present school and/ or a letter of recommendation from a coach or manager of any out of school team represented. The letter of recommendation should detail significant skills and achievement of the candidates in their chosen sport/s.

Candidates will also be expected to attend a Sports Award Trial in January, where fitness and agility levels will be assessed in their chosen sports.

Music AwardsMusic Scholarships and Exhibitions may be awarded annually. Candidates may enter for either an Academic Award or a Music Award or for both.

The Major Music Award is named the Helmore Music Scholarship.

At Fourth Form level, candidates for a Music Scholarship will normally be expected to have reached at least the standard (though not necessarily to have sat the examination) of Grade 6 in piano or Grade 5 in an orchestral instrument. For a Music Exhibition a minimum of one grade lower would be expected. Candidates may also offer a second instrument at a lower level, and/or voice, and/or composition. Two contrasting pieces will be expected and there will also be aural and sightreading tests. Musical ability may also be taken into account in making other Academic Awards.

Drama AwardsA Drama Award is available to a pupil who is able to demonstrate outstanding acting ability. Evidence for this will be threefold: The pupil should have an outstanding record of full participation in past school productions, supported by a reference from that school, outlining exactly what the student has achieved in the past and why the student should be considered for such an Award. The candidate will take part in an audition session at Mill Hill in January. He/she should prepare two short audition speeches, one from Shakespeare and one from a modern play. These should be fully

rehearsed before the audition, word perfect and show outstanding ability in both voice and movement work.

The pupil will take part in a drama workshop with other candidates on the day of the audition, where he/she will demonstrate a confident awareness of how to work positively and creatively with others in such an environment. Candidates should only attempt this audition if they have a proven interest in drama and something very special to offer the school.

BursariesMeans-tested bursaries are available to new entrants to the School. Such awards are intended to extend the benefits of a Mill Hill education to pupils whose families would not otherwise be able to afford the School’s fees. In addition, the School makes provision for the award of hardship bursaries to assist families who experience sudden and unexpected hardship.

Bursaries are funded from the School’s fee income, supplemented by contributions to the Mill Hill School Foundation Appeal. Bursary awards are made by the Court of Governors upon the recommendation of the Foundation Bursary Committee. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate sound academic potential, strong co-curricular interests and strong personal qualities.

Families wishing to apply for financial support are encouraged to request a Bursary Application Form and a copy of the School’s Bursary Policy. Please email: [email protected] for details.

External Trust FundsThere are a number of Awards funded by external Trust Funds; the Head nominates candidates for these on the basis of the School’s normal interviews and Entrance Examinations and any other information, as available and appropriate.

McClure/Life Governors’ Scholarship at the Head’s discretion; no special conditions.

Ousey Scholarship: a candidate must be a lineal descendant of a former pupil of the School.

ScholarshipsScholarships attract a maximum of 10% fee remission of a day or boarding place. 10% fee remission is the maximum total amount that any candidate can hold as a scholarship even if more than one scholarship is held. If a candidate holding a Fourth Form Award of 10% applies later in their career for a Sixth Form Scholarship, they will, if successful in their application for a Sixth Form award, attract the status of a Sixth Form Scholar but the financial value of their scholarship will not increase.

Scholarships are available to pupils showing exceptional talent in a variety of areas both in the classroom and on the sports field. In addition to major awards, there are a number of minor Awards or Exhibitions also on offer. • Candidates for Scholarships must be

over 12 years old and under 14 years old on 1 June in the year which they are applying to enter the Fourth Form

• The School will seek a written reference on each candidate from the Head of his or her present school

• All Awards are reviewed annually and are subject to the recipient performing at a satisfactory standard during the course of the preceding year

• The value of an Award will attract the same annual percentage rise as the School Fees

The Head of an applicant’s prep school will be asked to make the recommendation for consideration for an academic award and the format of the prep school Head’s reference will be modified to allow more space to identify particular academic strengths, especially where these are in subjects not in the entrance examinations.

Those candidates whose performance in the entrance examinations is sufficiently strong, as assessed by the School, will be invited to proceed to a series of scholarship interviews, shortly after the entrance examinations. Those going forward for scholarship interview may include those recommended by their prep school Head and also any others who have met the required standard of performance in the entrance examinations.

Candidates will be interviewed by Heads of Department at Mill Hill in 1, 2 or 4 of the subjects offered in the entrance examinations (depending on their performance), and by the Head. Candidates may be given some material/ questions in some subjects to prepare for 20 minutes before each interview. The interviews will have agreed criteria for evaluation.

The range of academic awards available will be:• Academic Scholarship for strong

performance in all/most scholarship interviews

• Academic Exhibition for good performance in all scholarship interviews

• Exhibition in one or two named subject(s) for strong performance in the relevant subject interviews and in the Head’s interview.

Other AwardsCandidates for other awards will be expected to perform at a sound level in the School’s Entrance Examinations.

Ward Art & Design andDesign Technology AwardsWard Art & Design Award and Design Technology Awards may be made annually.

Candidates will be required to submit a portfolio of recent work. It is expected that any candidate for an Art & Design Award or Design Technology Award will be: An outstanding pupil in Art or Design Technology who regularly receives A grades at his/her current school. Be able to demonstrate a strong interest and commitment to the subject, and intending to continue with the subject at least to GCSE level.

Academic AwardsAcademic Scholarships attract a maximum of 10% fee remission of a day or boarding place. 10% fee remission is the maximum total amount that any candidate can hold as a scholarship even if more than one scholarship is held. A number of lesser value Exhibitions may also be awarded.

Requirements for Sixth Form ApplicantsWe request a confidential reference from the candidate’s present school which we use together with interviews and predicted GCSE results to decide whether or we can offer a place. Offers at Mill Hill are currently conditional on achieving a minimum of two Grade 7 and three Grade 6 passes (or equivalent in numerical grades) plus minimum grade 5 in English and Mathematics at GCSE (or international equivalent). In addition, each Sixth Form subject has its own specific GCSE grade requirements; these are set out in the Sixth Form Curriculum Guide.

Requirements for Academic AwardsCandidates for an Academic Scholarship are required to sit Scholarship Examinations in their choice of two of the subjects they intend to take at A Level at Mill Hill and these are followed by an interview round for those who have performed sufficiently strongly in the Scholarship Examinations. As an alternative, candidates may apply for an Exhibition in a single subject: they sit a Scholarship Examination in one of the subjects they intend to take at A Level and this will be followed by a subject interview for those who have performed sufficiently strongly in the examination.

Candidates who choose History as one of their two subjects may be considered for a Winfrey History Award. (There is not a separate examination for this Award).

Candidates for Art are expected to produce a mixed media portfolio which would be presented and discussed at interview with the Head of Art.

Candidates for Music sit a written exam and are auditioned by the Director of Musical Performance. They are expected to be Grade 8 standard in one musical instrument or voice and Grade 5 standard in a second musical instrument or voice.

Candidates for Drama sit a written paper and are auditioned by the Head of Drama.

Sports Award candidates will be expected to be performing at district or county level, or above, in their chosen sport. Awards are made only for sports which form part of the School games programme. Candidates must provide a sports CV and it is likely that they would be assessed by a member of the PE and Games Department. The syllabus for the Scholarship Examinations will not be more than the proportion of the GCSE syllabus which could reasonably be expected to have been covered by the time of the examinations.

BursariesMeans-tested bursaries are available to new entrants to the School. Such awards are intended to extend the benefits of a Mill Hill education to pupils whose families would not otherwise be able to afford the School’s fees. Bursaries are funded from the School’s fee income, supplemented by contributions to the Mill Hill School Foundation Appeal. Bursary awards are made by the Court of Governors upon the recommendation of the Foundation Bursary Committee. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate sound academic potential, strong extra-curricular interests and strong personal qualities.

Families wishing to apply for financial support are encouraged to request a Bursary Application Form and a copy of the School’s Bursary Policy, both of which are available from our Bursary. Please email [email protected] for details.

The School believes strongly that having a learning difficulty/disability should not be a barrier to achievement.

The Learning Support Department offers support for those pupils who have a learning difficulty and/or disability, including those with a Statement of Special Educational Needs. The Department aims to offer such pupils the appropriate support tailored to their individual needs to ensure they achieve their full potential. The Learning Support Department works in close partnership with other teachers and pupils’ parents to ensure that pupils who have a learning difficulty are supported appropriately. The type of support offered to a pupil is tailored to their individual needs, and may include in-class support, individual and group sessions focussing on literacy, maths, study and organisational skills. Access arrangements for public examinations are arranged as appropriate.Staffing

Currently the department comprises the Head of Learning Support, two part-time teachers and four learning support assistants.

Teaching CurriculumAt all levels the department’s key aim is to enhance the learning of those pupils on the Learning Support Register. The department’s work comprises three principal strands: teaching individual and small-group support lessons to follow and reinforce aspects of the main curriculum; to intervene in regular academic lessons to support particular pupils or groups of pupils; to provide information and awareness on pupils with learning support needs by liaising with teachers and pastoral staff.

Accommodation and ResourcesThe Learning Support Department is located in its own area opposite the Sixth Form Centre. There are four well-resourced teaching rooms including the Head of Learning Support’s room which is used both as a teaching room and meeting room as needed. The department has one interactive whiteboard and has a large range of books and resources.

For more information please contact the Head of Learning Support, Miss Lisa Silverman, [email protected], direct Line 020 8906 7941.
