New Name...Same Mission BY ROD CRITTENDEN, GLFA EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT/CEO, WUMFA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

LEADERSHIPREPORT

Y ou may or may not have noticed a change... your Michigan Floral Association is now doing business

as the Great Lakes Floral Association (GLFA). Nothing has changed except for the name.

Our mission statement dropped the word Michigan but otherwise remains the same: To provide education and professional partnerships to advance business and position our colleagues at the forefront of the floral industry.

The idea for a name change first emerged at last year's strategic planning meeting. The board of directors wanted to be more welcoming and more inclusive to anyone in our region who would like to become part of the association; hence the name change seemed logical. They were primarily thinking of those industry members to the south and east where retail floral education and professional industry partnerships are getting hard to find.

As the Association moves forward into our second

century we embrace change and look forward to welcoming industry members from near and far. Our goal is to make you feel welcome and part of the Great Lakes Floral Association family.

If you have any questions please feel free to call me at the GLFA office (517) 575-0110 or visit our newly redesigned website at www.greatlakesfloralassociation.org.

DESIGNERSPOTLIGHT

BY BRENDA HANKIS EASTERN FLORAL, GRAND RAPIDS, MI 2019 GLFA DESIGNER OF THE YEAR

Sponsored by

Nordlie Floral, Inc. of Warren, Grandville, Cleveland, Dayton, OH; Tampa, FL

Event Design with an Abstract TwistI am always up for a challenge and absolutely love to create

new and innovative designs. For this Designer Spotlight I wanted to focus on my passion…Special Event design

which allows me to think outside of the proverbial box, while creating something that will leave a lasting impression in the minds of the client and their guests. I wanted this piece to be unique, but functional utilizing an architectural and abstract structure as the base of the design. Using U-Glue, attach a 6” Lomey tray with Oasis® to the architectural structure to secure the base. Carefully wrap amaranthus around the structure to create a “nest” effect and for added texture. Place miniature white calla lilies within the design and attach some of them to the structure with U-Glue for balance and a distinctive flare. For additional texture include green variegated hydrangea and green brunia. To counter balance the callas, I chose fragrant white freesia. Calathea leaves and lily grass were added for a unique finishing touch. Voila! An aesthetically pleasing design to present to your next special event client.

T he Great Lakes Floral Association regional meetings were held in April throughout the six regions in Michigan. Attendance was on the rise with the hope

that the regional meetings will become of interest to many more floral professionals in the future.

The board of directors under the encouragement of President Jerome Raska AAF, AIFD, CAFA, CF, PFCI, was excited about the concept of broadening education to members as well as non-members throughout the year by means of the newly developed regional meeting platform.

This year’s meetings focused on Profitable Proms with instructors demonstrating new techniques and ideas to entice customers with new-fangled and exciting designs. Fitz Design and Oasis® Floral Products were the hard goods sponsors donating wonderful new items.

The events were conducted due to the generosity of venue and fresh product sponsors. Region One was held at Kennicott Brothers/Nordlie Floral, Warren, Michigan, with instructor Jerome Raska. Region Two met at Norton’s Flowers & Gifts in Ypsilanti, Michigan, with fresh product donated by Kennicott Brothers/Nordlie Floral of Warren, Michigan, with

instructor Deana Gress CF. Region Three and Four gathered at Eastern Floral in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Product was donated by Kennicott’s in Grandville, MI, and instructors were Marisa Rakowski CF, Lisa VanderMeer CF, Megan Kassuba and Kiersten Schulte. Region Five was held at Kennicott Mid-Michigan in Saginaw, Michigan, with Kim Herbers as instructor. Region Six was held at BJ’s Restaurant in Gaylord, Michigan. Kennicott Brothers Mid-Michigan was the sponsor and instructor was Jackie Burrell AIFD, CF.

The Great Lakes Floral Association board of directors would like to extend their appreciation to the companies, venues and instructors who made these meetings a success. We are working on our lineup for Fall 2019. The meetings will be posted on the GLFA website as soon as all venues and dates are confirmed. This year’s Fall product sponsor will be Syndicate Sales. Please plan to attend these educational events to keep you and your staff up to date on the latest trends and products available from the industry’s finest suppliers.

These events are open to members and non-members and are held for the benefit of the floral professionals in the Great Lakes Region. They are implemented for purpose of increasing membership in the Great Lakes Floral Association and educating its members.

A s we are all finding ourselves in the midst of prom season again, let’s try to keep this as simple and as profitable as possible.

Recently doing a design presentation, I came to realize that some of the simple things get forgotten in the race to get it done. I thought I would outline a few simple things to keep it real.

When taking the order, select all the items at that time. Place all necessary ribbon, wristlets, gem stones, pins, bags, etc., in the corsage or boutonniere box with a copy of the order. That way when it is time to create all you need is the fresh product and the rest is at your fingertips.

Encourage everyone to take a picture and post on social media while in your shop as well as check in on Facebook.

When doing the assembly, be sure all the fresh product is room temperature prior to assembly; this will allow for a much more secure finished product. When using cold glue, remember that if you have some glue that is setting up, it will reactivate simply by adding a little additional adhesive to it.

Always, remember when finished with the cold glue, whether it is a tube or the can , simply spray with leave shine prior to reinstalling the lid and it will allow for reopening with ease.

Use finishing spray on all finished designs. It really makes a difference!

J ason Parent CFD, MMFD, Fiddleheads Flowers and Vintage Chic Gifts, Cape Elizabeth, Maine, is the winner of the 2019 James Lowe Memorial Award. The

award is presented by FloristWare in honor of James Lowe, a talented designer and dedicated member of the floral industry who passed away in 2018 at the age of 38.

The James Lowe Symposium Scholarship provides registration at the AIFD Symposium and $1,500 in cash for a total $2,500. Jason will be inducted at the Symposium this year. He’s already volunteered in years past, made specific commitments to help this year, and is looking to do even more in the future. In addition he is active in the Maine State Florists and Growers Association. This is the kind of volunteerism the James Lowe Memorial Award was designed to reward and encourage.

After one week and more than 4,000 thousand votes for thirty-eight individual entries, the top five finishers in the online design contest portion of the award advanced to the final round. They were joined by the winners of the professional divisions from the 2019 Great Lakes Floral and Event Expo and 2019 WUMFA Annual Convention, A final winner was selected at random.

Jason Parent commented “I am honored to have won this award in the name of James Lowe. I first met him five years ago when I went to my first Symposium. We had a lot in common (I also grew up working for my family’s flower shop/garden center) and ended up becoming friends. When I told him I was going to test for my AIFD he became one of my mentors. He would text and send me words of encouragement”.

Response to the competition was strong, better than anticipated, and has ensured that the James Lowe Memorial Award will return in 2020 with another online contest and a new winner.

FloristWare’s Mark Anderson noted “We are so grateful to everyone that participated by entering, voting or just telling their friends. We also received a lot of great feedback on how we can make the contest, and the prize better for next year.”

Changes will include more ways to enter, with the winners of additional established regional design contests getting access to the final round, and a bigger prize package that will include contributions from other industry vendors.

2019 WUMFAREVIEW

W UMFA members celebrated the association’s 100th anniversary, Fired Up...Celebrating the Past, Fired Up for the Future! at the annual spring convention

in Green Bay, Wisconsin. It was evident at the meeting how strong the association is and how committed to improving the floral industry.

Three intensive days of learning, growing and connecting sparked the fire for members past and present. Attendees carried home more than great new products in the amazing trade fair, but also many new techniques, tips and ways to use them.

There were hands on classes such as “Crash Course: Event Management from Selling to Design” sponsored by Details Flowers where Jennifer Breitbach and Rhonda Deaver created all the banquet flowers with students. In Contemporary Wedding Bouquets, Alex Jackson AAF, AIFD, PFCI, sponsored by Teleflora, showed students how to create armatures for a more “organic” look.

“Twisted Art of Body Flowers” by Jane Edwards AIFD, sponsored by WUMFA, showed how to work with wearable floral art. Kevin Ylvisaker AIFD, PFCI, sponsored by Smithers Oasis, featured the new Midnight floral foam and colors of bind wire.

There were plenty of main stage shows to inspire the traditional to special event florists. Reliant Ribbon sponsored “Making More Green by Making the Upgrade” with Mike Homyak and Loriann List AIFD. Simple, fun ways to use ribbon and accessories were shown such as the many possibilities the new wood grain ribbon provides and clever ways to clear the back room of ribbons.

Kevin Ylvisaker was “Designing for Today’s Market” with many earth friendly options. He gave tips on marketing to “Gen Z” as opposed to “Gen Y.” Gen Z is very demanding and it’s important that technology is able to satisfy their tastes.

Lisa Belisle AIFD, ICPF “Fusing Tropical with Design” highlighted the importance of creating designs that reflected nature. Her weaving and armatures added structure to the bold and colorful designs. Containers, foliage and exotic flowers were sponsored by EC Flowers and Flora Elements.

Alex Jackson’s “Here Comes the Bride” highlighted ways to create bouquets in holders, hand tying, and building stunning event pieces. He recommended “color shifting” as opposed to “painting” flowers. He explained how to create large event pieces that can more easily be transported and guaranteed to remain stable.

There was also no shortage of business sessions. Melissa Maas CFD, presented both “Fertilizing: Getting Your Team to Grow” and “Pruning: How to Make a Stronger Team” sponsored by Bank of Flowers. She shared her years of experiences in managing her team, developing methods to motivate, train, and track employees. By putting systems in place, shops can take out the guesswork and have more consistency.

“Talking Shop with the Wisconsin Funeral Directors Association” was a chance to ask a licensed professional about his industry and his relationship with customers and florists. They shared legal obligations, trends, desire to have courteous professional deliveries and need to have open dialog between the florist, families and funeral directors. The session was commentated by Tami and Gordy Gasch and sponsored by Brilliont Blooms and WFDA.

Shirley Lyons AAF, PFCI, sponsored by FloristWare, presented both “Treat your Business Like a Car!” and “Tired of Paying for All That Advertising.” She ran through a step-by-step assessment of the business and ways to keep records on the maintenance of everything from coolers to delivery vehicles as well as keeping the building’s signage and facade from becoming old. Shirley also shared lots of ways to get PR without having to pay for it. Television news and print media are always looking for a good story so don’t be shy.

Corrine Heck presented “Gaining the Competitive Edge” Sponsored by Details Flowers, she shared ways to avert disaster when working with brides and events by having policies in place from mark-up to cancelation policy

“Success is a Mindset” was presented by Jessica Zimmerman, sponsored by the Wisconsin Florist Foundation. Jessica recalled her journey to creating the kind of balance between work and home life that allowed her to raise a family and generate the kind of clientele that did not require all of her time.

WUMFA Still Fired Up After 100 YEARS!BY LORIANN LIST, AIFD, WANTAS FLORAL & GIFT, CLINTONVILLE, WI

“A well organized and grand celebration for the 100th anniversary. It was great to see so many new faces and spend time conversing with good friends. Many thanks

to all who planned for this once in a lifetime event.” — Diane Schulte

“For a first timer and a volunteer at the convention I had a lot of positives to take back home. So

interesting see the design styles for one. The best thing I’m coming home with after this convention is

new friendships with like minded people. Having someone to shoot a message to when you’re mulling over a design or needing an inspiration is priceless.”

2019 WUMFAREVIEW

The Ichiyo School of Ikebana sponsored a grand display of Japanese floral art for both the public and attendees to enjoy. The display was presented by Laurie Wareham, certified Ikebana instructor.

The Highlight of the weekend had to be the annual banquet and social. With returning members, stories shared and a delightful contest that had everyone getting to know each other, it was a night to remember. Decorations reminiscent of 1919 brought florists out with their vintage hats and attire. Bo-Jo’s Floral donated a 100th Anniversary cake to top off the meal. Honored were past presidents who are retired, as were scholarship recipients, hall of fame award winners, and a certified florist who was inducted. Who could have asked for a better celebration of 100 years together?

“The Saturday night gala was beautifully done from the flowers to the food. The party was a wonderful

tribute for the 100th year of WUMFA.” — Candy Cannon
