FEATURESCoal India: Are its bankers makingmore money than investors?

Jitendra Kumar Gupta

It seems neither Coal India (CIL) norits shareholders know what to dowith the huge cash pile of Rs 62,000

crore the company is sitting on. A back-of-the-envelope calculation ofextrapolating the cash flows in theprevious financial years, this kitty islikely to swell to Rs 82,000 crore inFY15, or nearly 44% of its currentmarket capitalisation (m-cap).

If things remain as they are, at somepoint in time, the market will startputting more value for the cash CILholds in its books rather than itsbusiness of coal mining!

One argument suggest that thecompany should deploy the funds moreproductively by investing in assets thatwould yield high returns or return it tothe investors through the buyback /special dividend route. Simply keepingmoney in a bank deposit would notyield a high return for CIL since the

average yield on such bank depositsmay not be more than 8–9%.

On the other hand, those investorswho do not wish to tender the sharesin a buyback could still play the stockfor dividend.

CAPEX VS BUYBACKAnother sensible step for the companycould be to start deploying cash in thebusiness through capex that will notonly help in growth but will also helpboost valuations once earnings improve.Even from the shareholders perspective,if the company deploys money in thebusiness, every rupee of earnings willadd 12 times (based on price toearnings ratio of 12) to its m-cap. In thiscase, investors will make more money ifthe cash is deployed in the business asstock price could increase on account ofan overall improvement in the return /financial ratios. Another way thecompany can utilise the cash is to go infor a buyback. At current market price, the company is making almost 10%earnings yield, which is better than thebank rate. However, a buyback may notbe a feasible option considering that itwill lead to the liquidity issues and pricemanipulation in the event of a low float.

If things remain as they are, at some point in time, the market will start puttingmore value for the cash CIL holds in its books rather than its business of coal mining

LPG cap hike sees oil & gas stocks bleedPuneet Wadhwa

Investors have not taken too kindly toCongress vice-president, RahulGandhi’s populist measure to

increase the cap on subsidised LPGcylinders from the exiting nine to 12 peryear. Reacting to the development,HPCL, BPCL and IOC lost 2%, 1.8% and1.1% in early trades on Monday. TheS&P BSE Oil & Gas index ended downnearly 1.2%.“Investors are resenting themove of the government of once again

going back into the subsidy regime andmaking a bigger hold in the country’sbalance sheet by adding to the fiscaldeficit. This is clearly getting reflectedon how the stocks are behaving intrade,” said Deven Choksey, MD & CEO,K R Choksey Securities.“The move islikely to increase under-recoveries byRs 3,300 crore – 5,300 crore per yearon the exchequer in the form of subsidy. The total under-recoveries are likely toincrease by 3–5% for FY2015, as perour estimates. We await final approval

from the Cabinet before we incorporateincrease in subsidy due to increasedquota,” said an analyst from AngelBroking. Points out Sudeep Anand, ananalyst tracking the sector with IDBICapital: “As per IOC’s estimates, theimpact of the move is around Rs 5,700crore. As estimate FY15 under-recoveries at Rs 1.1 trillion (Rs 110,000crore) excluding the burden due to thelatest move. However, what needs to beseen is how this is shared amongplayers in the sector.

Deepak Korgaonkar AndPuneet Wadhwa

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs)have accumulated equity shares ofmid and small-sized companies as

their holdings in select stocks by asmuch as eight percentage points duringthe October–December quarter, thelatest shareholding pattern data shows.

Analysts suggest that post the rallyin the large-cap counters, mid-capstocks would have appeared moreattractive based on valuation for the FIIsto up their holding in thesestocks/companies. Of the 453 mid-and-small cap firms that have so far declaredtheir December quarter shareholdingpattern reveal that FIIs have increasedtheir stake in nearly 42% or 190companies and in 101 companies, theirholdings remain unchanged. While, inthe remaining 162 firms they havereduced their stake during the recentlyconcluded quarter.

Among individual stocks, Ceat,

Pennar Industries, UPL, APL Apollo Tube,Natco Pharma, HDIL and Zee Learn haveseen FIIs up stake between 4–8percentage points during the recentlyconcluded quarter, data suggests. FIIsstake in personal products makerGillette India has increased by 6percentage points to 7.81% from 1.68%.The overseas investors have boughtshares in offer for sale (OFS) by GilletteIndia promoters. “Equity flows continueunabated with CY13 receiving $20billion (third highest equity flow ever).Private Financials, Utilities, Technologyand Automobiles were the top sectorsseeing maximum FII inflows duringCY09-CY13,” said Rajat Rajgarhia, managing director - institutionalequities at Motilal Oswal Securities.
