Week of Lent

Create in me a pure heart

As we move into the final weeks of Lent, this Sunday’s responsorial psalm is

taken from King David’s penitential prayer. David's heart had been full of lust

for Bathsheba, murderous plans for Uriah, and rebellion against God. Later he

repented and desired a new heart, one that was full of love for God and

abhorrence of evil. Sin in his heart had brought him nothing but guilt, grief, and

remorse. He wanted to have a spiritual heart surgery that only God could

perform. And thus, he cried out, “Create a pure heart in me, O God and renew a

steadfast spirit within me." (Ps 51:10)., May our hearts be of a penitential one

and renew God’s spirit within us during these last days of Lenten journey.

Holy Week planning

As we approach the holiest of times in the Christian calendar, we are reminded of

connecting our own personal suffering with the suffering of Jesus. Jesus did not

come to take away suffering, but to bring meaning to it through his life, death

and resurrection. The Holy Week includes five days of special significance. The

first is Palm Sunday, which commemorates Jesus' humble entry on a donkey into

Jerusalem to observe Passover.

Maundy Thursday marks Jesus’ institution at the Last Supper of the Eucharist,

thereafter a central element of Christian worship. In Roman Catholicism,

Maundy Thursday is accompanied by the washing of the feet of 12 persons, in

imitation of Jesus’ washing of the feet of his 12 disciples at the Last Supper.

Good Friday commemorates Jesus’ suffering and death on the cross; it is

traditionally a day of sorrow, penance, and fasting. Holy Saturday, also called

Easter Vigil, is the traditional end of Lent.

Easter Sunday is the celebration of Jesus’ Resurrection, according to the Gospels,

on the third day after his crucifixion. The modern observance of Easter, like that

of Christmas, has become associated with various folk traditions that have little

connection with the religious celebration; they include the Easter lamb, the

Easter rabbit, and the painting of Easter eggs. Let us therefore, plan our activities

in the coming two weeks, according to the spirit of Holy week and participate

whole heartedly in the sacred liturgy of the Holy days.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM

R. Create a clean heart in me, O God. Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness. In your compassion blot out my offence. O wash me more and more from my guilt and cleanse me from my sin. R. A pure heart create for me, O God, put a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from your presence, nor deprive me of your holy spirit. R. Give me again the joy of your help; with a spirit of fervour sustain me, that I may teach transgressors your ways and sinners may return to you. R.

First Reading

A reading from the prophet Jeremiah 31:31–34 See, the days are coming - it is the Lord who speaks - when I will make a new covenant with the House of Israel and the House of Judah, but not a covenant like the one I made with their ancestors on the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. They broke that covenant of mine, so I had to show them who was master. It is the Lord who speaks. No, this is the covenant I will make with the House of Israel when those days arrive - it is the Lord who speaks. Deep within them I will plant my Law, writing it on their hearts. Then I will be their God and they shall be my people. There will be no further need for neighbour to try to teach neighbour, or brother to say to brother, 'Learn to know the Lord!' No, they will all know me, the least no less than the greatest - it is the Lord who speaks - since I will forgive their iniquity and never call their sin to mind.

The word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

SECOND Reading

A reading from the letter to the Hebrews 5:7–9 During his life on earth, Christ offered up prayer and entreaty, aloud and in silent tears, to the one who had the power to save him out of death, and he submitted so humbly that his prayer was heard. Although he was Son, he learnt to obey through suffering; but having been made perfect, he became for all who obey him the source of eternal salvation. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gospel acclamation

Glory to you, Word of God, Lord Jesus Christ! If you serve me, follow me, says the Lord; And where I am, my servant will also be.

Glory to you, Word of God, Lord Jesus Christ!

GOSPEL

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John 12:20−33 Among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. These approached Philip, who came from Bethsaida in Galilee, and put this request to him, 'Sir, we should like to see Jesus.' Philip went to tell Andrew, and Andrew and Philip together went to tell Jesus. Jesus replied to them: 'Now the hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. I tell you, most solemnly, unless a wheat grain falls on the ground and dies, it remains only a single grain; but if it dies, it yields a rich harvest. Anyone who loves his life loses it; anyone who hates his life in this world will keep it for the eternal life. If a man serves me, he must follow me, wherever I am, my servant will be there too. If anyone serves me, my Father will honour him. Now my soul is troubled. What shall I say: Father, save me from this hour? But it was for this very reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name!' A voice came from heaven, 'I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.' People standing by, who heard this, said it was a clap of thunder; others said, 'It was an angel speaking to him.' Jesus answered, 'It was not for my sake that this voice came, but for yours. 'Now sentence is being passed on this world; now the prince of this world is to be overthrown. And when I am lifted up from the earth, I shall draw all men to myself.' By these words he indicated the kind of death he would die. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Welcoming Church

“Our times require a deeply merciful Catholicism, that is unafraid of change.” ( Pope Frances)

The call from the Pope states that we need to become Disciples and work for change. What does a Welcoming Church mean? A Welcoming Church makes everyone, who attends mass at the weekend, feel welcome and leave enriched for the experience.

As a congregation there are many things we can do to make this happen, these include:

Hymns. The choirs always need more members, so if you possess a singing voice please join the choir and help us all to praise God better. Even you are not in the choir please join in and stay until the final hymn is completed. I am sure that all the choirs would love help and support.

Hospitality. We have a wonderful team of volunteers who are checking people in, because of COVID-19, and making everyone welcome. We need to add more people to the hospitality Ministry as it spreads the load, and we need more people to make people welcome. This will extend after Covid is finished, so please come along and help.

Church Cleaning. There used to be a large group of people cleaning the church but with time passing this has been reduced to just a few people, who need help. The church is cleaned every Friday Morning and with enough volunteers you would only need to do it once a month. Please come and Volunteer for these ministries and increase the enjoyment on Sundays. Brendan Chestnutt PPC Chair

(list at the back of the Church)

All musicians and singers from all groups are encouraged to come and practice the hymns in preparation for Lent and Holy Week.

When a seed is planted in the ground, something amazing happens. As it receives water, it begins to die. It sheds its outer shell and then it swells up and bursts open. From the death of the seed, new life begins! A root grows from the seed and eventually a new plant pokes up through the ground towards the sun. Something living comes from something that died! A plant can grow from that one tiny seed and produce lots of food!

The gospel story In week’s gospel, Jesus uses the image of a grain of wheat to talk about what will happen to him. He will live on the earth and then he will die, but many people after Jesus will continue his work and spread the Good News throughout the earth. Jesus tells his friends that they must serve God before else, rather than focusing on their own personal interests. Those who follow Jesus will have a great reward, because God will honour them.

Commentaries The hour is near. The climax of Jesus’ work is fast approaching. The cost of his mission is growing greater by the day. The price to be paid is such that Jesus will pray “aloud and in silent tears to the one who had the power to save him out of death”. In the end it becomes all too clear – the grain of wheat must be buried in the ground and die before it can yield a harvest of life. The way ahead is the way of the cross. It is the way Jesus has trod before us, so we know it to be the path of life. The time has come for us to make our choice. Are we so in love with the life we know that we run the risk of losing it, or dare we let go of who we are and what we have in order to find life to the full? Like the foreigners in today’s gospel, we would “like to see Jesus”. Our wish will be granted. We shall see the Son of Man raised on the tree of the cross. The longer and more lovingly we gaze on him there, the more we shall be drawn to him and see his glory, “the glory that is his as the only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth” (Jn 1:14).

Lent is a penitential season of prayer, self-denial and helping others. In this way, the whole

Church prepares for Easter with those who are to be baptised Other celebration in Lent (e.g. Marriage) must take account of the spirit of penance: musical instruments are only used to sustain

singing and floral decorations are very simple. (excerpt from Ordo)

Weekly Story & Reflection. This week’s Gospel begins with people wishing to “see Jesus”. Perhaps not to simply observe Jesus, but to ‘see’ Jesus so that they can understand. As we continue our Lenten journey, let us think of where we see Jesus today. Do we see Jesus in the millions of people displaced around our world? Do we see Jesus in the people who don’t have the basic necessities to live life to the full? Do we see Jesus in those willing to help others?

In the Project Compassion story for this week we learn of, or ‘see;’ Halima, a Rohingya woman living in the world’s largest refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. Through our support of Caritas Australia, Halima and her two children now have access to clean water and sanitation facilities within the camp, along with access to food and clothes. Halima, with the basic necessities to support her family can now look forward to the future. Through Halima’s story we are able to see and hopefully understand a little more of the human experience. Later, in the Gospel, Jesus speaks of service: “Whoever serves me must follow me”. When we see Jesus in the struggle of human experience, do we serve and follow him? We should never underestimate our acts of service and our call to “Aspire not to have more, but to be more.” As one tiny seed can yield a rich harvest, our almsgiving and support of Caritas Australia is one way we can ‘be more’ by standing in solidarity with millions of people around the world. Like Jesus, we, too, are made for eternal life, and are united with him as we serve. How can we stay committed to respond to what we see and continue to serve the children, women and men most vulnerable to extreme poverty and injustice?

Fifth Sunday of Lent 21

st March 2021

Halima is raising two children in a Bangladeshi refugee camp while caring for her mother, who has a disability. A Caritas Australia-supported program helped her with a shelter, cooking equipment and hygiene training. Halima now earns a small income as a trainer, helping to maintain the health and cleanliness of her community.

Please donate to Project Compassion 2021 to so this transformational program can continue to empower vulnerable women, men and children, and strengthen the communities around them.

You can donate through parish boxes or envelopes, by visiting www.caritas.org.au/projectcompassion or phoning 1800 024 413.

Prayer of Intercession We pray for the women, children and men displaced by conflict. That we continue to work for

peace and be the welcoming face of our God to all who seek refuge.
