Bid to get snapshotof cybercrime miseryTHE latest cybercrime survey to assess the impact that onlinecrime is having around Warwickshire has just been launched.

It is being run by the Warwickshire InSight Team on behalf of theCyber Safe Warwickshire Partnership and asks people to share experi-ences of online crime through a number of questions.

The last survey in 2016/2017 found:– People in Warwickshire had fallen victim to approximately 15,000

successful phishing scams across the previous 12-month period.

– Over 5,500 residents had been a victim of an online romance scam.– 9,900 had been victim of identity fraud.– 30,000 fell victim to viruses and malware.– An estimated 6,000 online hate crimes had taken place.– Other online fraud and theft accounted for a further 21,500 victims.Since then, Warwickshire’s response has included:– The development of the Cyber Safe Warwickshire website and social

media, featuring cyber crime information and protection advice.– A Game Safe Warwickshire event, which engaged Year 9 students in

a session tackling online grooming and gaming safety.– More than 4,100 people engaged with Warwickshire’s

cybercrime advisers in 2018/19, helping them to reducetheir risk of harm from cybercrime.

– Enforcement work from trading standards led to theprosecutions of a man for the online supply of unsafe andcounterfeit phone chargers and cases and a producer offraudulent qualification certificates and work permits soldonline. Additional investigations have also cracked downon online sales of fake jewellery, online lettings agents, food ordering services and teeth whitening sellers.

The latest survey will seek to examine how the picturehas changed over the past two years and whether residentsare more aware of the dangers that can be posed online andthe things they can do to minimise these risks.

Police and Crime Commissioner, Philip Seccombe, said:“The evidence shows county residents and businesses aremore likely to fall victim to cybercrime and online fraudthan almost any other type of offence, with criminalsbecoming ever more sophisticated in their approach. It’sreally important the police and other agencies continue tohave an up-to-date picture of the volume and nature ofcybercrime in the county, so they can continue to evolvetheir approach to targeting those responsible.

There is advice and guidance on cyber safety available toWarwickshire residents on the cybersafe Warwickshirewebsite: www.cybersafewarwickshire.com

BBC films village’s‘jewel in the crown’

BBC TV cameras have been inWellesbourne to film an episode ofCountryfile and honour a local hero.

Presenter Matt Baker and the teambraved a windy day in the village earlierthis month to record an episode about thelife and times of Joseph Arch, which isexpected to be broadcast over the forth-coming Bank Holiday.

The recording was triggered by eventsorganised by Wellesbourne AllotmentAssociation and other local organisationsmarking 100 years since Joseph Arch died.Although chiefly known for improving therights of 19th century agricultural workers,it is less well known that Arch also workedtirelessly as an MP to further the develop-ment of the allotment movement in theUK.

Chair of Wellesbourne Allotment Asso-ciation Ian Hope said: “Earlier this year, with the help of Barford Heritage Group,we recreated the local tradition of walkingThe Joseph Arch Way between Welles-bourne and Barford, to honour his tradeunion work and to raise awareness of thevaluable contribution he made to the allot-ment movement.

“We believe Wellesbourne Allotmentsare the jewel in the crown of the villageand are tremendously proud that our asso-ciation has brought Countryfile to Welles-bourne and given Arch the national profilehe deserves.”

Filming took place in various locationsin Warwickshire, including an interviewwith Joseph Arch expert Dr Jeremy Bur-chardt outside The Stags Head pub inWellesbourne, at the allotments and inWalton.

At the Wellesbourne allotment site, plotholder Ken Manning traced the changingrole of allotments over the past 200 yearsand the many local community connec-tions and activities undertaken by TheWellesbourne Allotment Association in thevillage today.

Matt also took a tour around OscarsGarden, a new dementia-friendly plot atthe 180-year-old Wellesbourne Allotmentsite, with Heather Brown, chair of the vil-lage’s support group, Oscars.

The plot will officially be opened on theday the programme is aired – Sunday,25th August.

Matt’s verdict on the Wellesbourneallotments was – “spectacular”.

Two careful ownersA 1971 Morris Marina 1.3 deluxe has beendonated to the British Motor Museum by acouple who bought the car in 1973.

Mr and Mrs Gooding from Essex bought theMarina, which has been their everyday car formore than 40 years, has 130,000 miles on the clockand has been cherished and meticulously main-tained.

Mr Gooding, who is now in his 80s, wanted hiscar to be looked after and cared for by the BritishMotor Museum.

The Morris Marina was manufactured by theAustin-Morris division of British Leyland from1971 until 1980. It was a popular car in Britainthroughout its production life, narrowly pipping theFord Escort to second place in the UK car salestable in 1973 and regularly taking third or fourthplace in other years.

The 1.3 deluxe was the bread-and-butter modelfor many drivers. In 1971, the car would have cost£921 including purchase tax.

The workshop at the British Motor Museum hasspent the last two weeks preparing and polishingthe vehicle. It is now in the collections centre to beenjoyed by thousands of visitors.

Curator Stephen Laing said: “We would like tothank Mr and Mrs Gooding for their kind dona-tion. The Marina is perhaps not the most glam-orous of models, but it is one that holds memoriesfor many of our visitors.

“The Goodings’ Marina is a splendid example ofa car that has given faithful service for one family, each day for so many years”.

The British Motor Museum frequently getsoffered items of all shapes and sizes.

Not every car offered to the Museum is accepted. The museum has strict procedures about what itcan take, to ensure the car is right for the collectionand there is adequate space for it.

The space saving allows you to park close to the garage door with no risk and also saves space inside the garage. It also removes the danger of outward swinging garage doors striking unseen persons or objects outside.

Roller Garage Doors are effi cient space savers; rather than swinging the door to the side or outwards in front of the garage, the roller system means the doors roll directly up into a top roll system mounted above the door frame.

MYTON Hospice’s cycle challengewas as popular as ever this year, withmore than 500 cyclists enjoying a ridearound Warwickshire and theCotswolds.

There was a choice 50km, 100km, or100 mile routes for the event on 4thAugust. Before the first people set off, sponsorship of £20,000 had alreadybeen raised, and that figure has nowmore than doubled

Challenge events co-ordinator at

WARWICK District Council is inves-tigating the possible use of an injunc-tion to prevent further traveller incur-sions on publicly-owned land.

In the past two years it has spent almost£200,000 to improve the security of carparks and open spaces in the district andbetween February and June this year therewere no unauthorised encampments.

But last month there were three inci-dents, two on Myton Fields and one onSaltisford Common. For the first two thecouncil obtained and servedcourt orders, which invol-ved daily visits to the sitesto co-ordinate the legalpaperwork. For the smallerencampment at MytonFields the council had to usebailiffs and a tow truck. Thismonth a notice to leave hasbeen served on travellers atSaltisford Common.

There have also beenunauthorised encampmentson private land includingMyton School, ChaseMeadow and WarwickGates.

Cllr Jan Matecki said: “Inaddition to improved secu-

rity measures, we are continuing to workwith gypsy and traveller communities aswell as the police, the county council, resi-dents, town and parish councils to investi-gate a permanent travellers’ site.

“We are also investigating applying foran injunction from the High Court banningthe setting up of unauthorised encamp-ments on sections of public land in our dis-trict, as the process for recovering council-owned land is much slower than for landthat is privately owned.”

Day service opens thedoors on a new home A DAY service for people with learning disabili-ties has a new home in Stratford.

Heart of England Mencap officially opened the newhome of its Pathway Day Service at Elta House, Birm-ingham Road, last Wednesday, 14th August.

Work to transform the former office into a comfortableand functional day centre took two months to complete.

Sandra, a Pathway customer, cut the ribbon anddeclared the service officially open and visitors had achance to look around the new property and see activities, such as arts and crafts and beauty treatments, takingplace.

The new day centre now features a large wheelchair-accessible kitchen, which enables customers to fully par-ticipate in cooking activities and also plays an importantpart in the push for independence – a value at the heart ofthe organisation.

Elta House also boasts an open plan and versatileactivity area, an accessible bathroom and a relaxationarea.

Becky Davies, management accountant for Heart of

England Mencap, welcomed all the visitors to the openingceremony and took the opportunity to thank StratfordTown Trust for its grant, which contributed significantlyto the cost of refurbishment.

Trustees from the charity, the chief executive and atrustee of Stratford Town Trust, parents, carers and busi-ness representatives enjoyed the refreshments and chattedwith Heart of England Mencap customers and staff.

Pathway provides a day service offering activities forindividuals with a learning disability.

Swimming to be more accessible for allWARWICK District Council’s project team hasundertaken an in-depth analysis of the demand foraccess to swimming across the district.

The move to make swimming more accessible to allcomes as part of the authority’s planning process for theproposed improvement of Kenilworth’s leisure facilities.

The new plans for Abbey Fields propose replacing theexisting outdoor pool (installed following the closure of theLido in 1983) with a second indoor pool which can beopened up to an adjoining sun terrace in warmer weather.

The designs for the new pool follow consultation withleading specialists and advice from Swim England and willhave a moveable floor allowing the water depth to bealtered in a matter of minutes to meet the needs of youngchildren, parents and babies or aqua aerobics sessions.

There will also be direct pool access via a hoist from a‘Changing Place’ facility for the disabled, the first of itskind in the district.

Emily Naismith, a local parent and ambassador for

Changing Place facilities, said: “I am sure that I can speakfor the whole of the local disabled community in sayingthat I am delighted with the new designs for Abbey Fields.

“I am especially pleased that the council are not onlyplanning a Changing Place facility, but that it will includea hoist which can take a disabled person directly into thepool without the need for unnecessary transfers.

“Many people take going swimming with their families

for granted, at the moment families like mine simply don’thave access, this will be life-changing for so many peopleacross the district.”

The Kenilworth Leisure proposals will be considered bythe council’s executive committee tomorrow, Wednesday.

The report can now be viewed on the council’s websiteand architect drawings of the plans are on display at AbbeyFields Swimming Pool.

NFU Mutual employeeMatt Pemberton, who ledthe volunteering project, said: “It was great to havethe opportunity to help theOpen Door Café.

“Our employee volun-teering days enabled us toexperience a meaningfulteambuilding day for awonderful cause, where wecould really make a differ-ence.”

THE Open Door Commu-nity Café in HamptonMagna has been given afresh look, thanks to stafffrom NFU Mutual.

The café, owned by StMichael’s Church, is a pop-ular resource in the areaand has been running formany years. It offers solaceto those in need, hostswalking groups, knittinggroups, toddler dance andmuch more.

The Entrust Care Part-nership, an organisationproviding services for dis-abled children, youngpeople and their families, runs the Open Door Cafétwice a week.

The hub hosts also hos-pitality work experienceopportunities for six youngadults with additionalneeds, which provides path-ways to employment.

But the café itself waslooking a bit tired and inneed of a lift and two teamsof NFU Mutual colleagues

were keen to step in tohelp, through the com-pany’s employee volun-teering programme.

Lynne Barton, director atEntrust Care Partnership, said: “When WarwickshireCommunity and VoluntaryAction advertised that NFUMutual was looking foremployee volunteeringopportunities we did nothesitate to make contact asthe café needed some atten-tion.

“The makeover has liftedeveryone’s spirits and hasreally given our trainees asense of belonging’ andpride – huge thanks to theNFU Mutual team.”

Lynne added: “We aretrying to turn the tide ondisability unemploymentfigures one barista at atime. We are so proud ofeverything our six traineeshave achieved; we havewitnessed them grow inconfidence and see realenjoyment of their roles.”
