From the Prefect’s Desk Dearest Friends,

What is the Presence of God and conformity to the Will of God? The early saints describe both with unnerving clarity as the impossibility of hiding from God or escaping his Presence. Mary, Our Blessed Mother, whom we are celebrating under the title Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, is one leading example of complete trust in the Presence and Will of God.

There are three great “Fiats” that are eternally inscribed in Sacred Scripture. The first one was at Creation when God said: Fiat Lux: “Let there be light.” The other one was in Gethsemani when Our Blessed Savior, pressing the chalice of redemption to his lips, cried: Fiat voluntas tua: “Thy will be done” (Matthew 26:42). The third was Our Blessed Mother Mary’s, proclaimed in Nazareth: Fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum: “Be it done unto me according to thy word” (Luke 1:38).

The Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen once reflected in one of his Lenten Homilies: “No one would have ever suspected that when Mary resigned herself to God’s Will by accepting the honor of becoming Mother of God, she would ever have to bear a cross. It would seem, too, that one who was preserved free from Original Sin should be dispensed

from the penalties of that sin, such as pain. Yet this honor brought to her seven crosses and ended by making her the Queen of Martyrs.”

As we can see, Mary, in her most pure and chaste self, was purified even more by the sufferings she encountered by being the Theotokos – God Bearer. It was part of the Divine Will and as we all know, Our Blessed Mother knew what she was saying “Yes” to. But, let us not diminish that fact as a cruelty heaped on by a vengeful God. No. As with my previous letter, one thing that makes us all equal is the encounter of suffering and sacrifice. Even the Blessed Lord endured it! The one fact that we must always remember is that God’s Presence is abound. We must only deliver ourselves unconditionally to Him so that we may fully grasp the depth of it, just as Mary did. Mary’s complete trust in the Divine Presence and total conformity to the Divine Will gave us within the tradition of the Church itself, a complete and loving picture of one who surrenders yet triumphs in the end. St. Thomas Aquinas beautifully encapsulates this reflection stating: “The Blessed Virgin, by becoming the Mother of God, received a kind of infinite dignity because God is infinite; this dignity therefore is such reality that a better is not possible, just as nothing can be better than God.” Achieving both virtues, trust in the Divine Presence and Conformity to the Divine Will, can bring great inner peace via the route of fatalistic acceptance. There is more of an element of passive suffering in it which can create a mood to support daring and courage in the face of extreme uncertainty. This is where the two Fiats uttered by Our Blessed Lord and Our Blessed Mother meet and fulfill each other: Verumtamen non sicut ego volo, sed sicut tu: “Not as I will, but as thou wilt” (Matthew 26:39) which as we all know is a complete preparation for Sacrifice. Be assured that anyone who walks faithfully in God’s Presence, in full and total surrender, shall never be separated from Him. This Cleric recalls the words of the Apostle: “In God we live and move and have our being.” And so he considers himself to be like a fish in the water or a bird in the air, and thus he is always in the presence of God, whom he fears as a Lord who watches him, whom he loves as a Father who provides him with every good thing, and whom he invokes continually and praises and serves without ceasing. – St. Anthony Mary Claret Laudetur Jesus Christus! Sincerely yours in Christ, AJ Garcia

From our Chaplain Generous Donor Makes Possible Restoration of Our Lady of Grace Statue Second Church Restoration Project – Our Tabernacle

The entire parish is grateful to a single donor, a new parishioner, who has decided to donate the full amount of the above statue restoration project in memory of his deceased parents. He hopes that his example will inspire additional donors to contribute toward the tabernacle project, which you may also read about in this edition of the bulletin, for the greater honor and glory of God.

Because of the generous donation of a parishioner to restore the statue of Our Lady, we have decided to proceed with another church project for the greater honor and glory of God. The statue donor wishes that others will be inspired to match his donation by contributing toward the restoration of the tabernacle behind the High Altar of the church. We are fortunate to have the tabernacle at the center of our church, where our Lord is truly present for us to adore Him. He is in our midst, among us, to accompany us on our journey through life. The setting we have is lovely, but after almost a hundred years is well worn and showing its age. The same art restorers, Andre and Barbara Bossak, who will work on the statue, are also able to restore the tabernacle. Here is what they wrote to me about the tabernacle project:

“In regards to the restoration of the brass tabernacle from the main altar and the brass capitals adorning the corners. The latest addition of the brackets and hooks on the tabernacle will be removed and the holes will be filled. After a preliminary examination, the front of the brass tabernacle was gilded with gold. A substantial area of this gold was removed by mechanical abrasion. The brass substrate sustained heavy oxidation and discoloration. If the tabernacle can be safely

removed, then restoration will be done in the studio, but if it is not possible to remove safely, work will be done on site. The restoration work will include the removal of oxidation and stains from the brass within the tabernacle, framing and capitals. The capitals themselves are also covered with a heavily discolored lacquer which must be removed. The frame and the doors of the brass tabernacle will be cleaned, polished and protected against oxidation. The front door and frame will be regilded with 23k gold and also protected against moisture, dirt, and other harmful elements but still will be vulnerable to mechanical abrasions like previously. The total cost will be approximately $4700-$5300 including labor, gold, and material.”

Your generous support for this second project would be much appreciated. The restoration of the tabernacle shows our love and respect for the Eucharistic Christ. Let us offer him a dignified, clean, and beautiful home among us as a reminder of the one that should always be in our hearts for Him in the Sacrament of Love.

Yours in the Lord,

Fr. Mark G. Mazza, Pastor

Fr. Mark Mazza’s 33rd Ordination Anniversary

Solemn High Mass & Reception on October 2, 2013

INTROIT Dan 3:31; 3:29; 3:35 All that You have done to us, O Lord, You have done in true judgment; because we have sinned against You, and we have not obeyed your commandments; but give glory to Your name, and deal with us accord-ing to the multitude of Your mercy. Ps 118:1 Happy are they whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord. V. Glory be . . . COLLECT O Lord, we beseech You, graciously grant Your faithful forgiveness and peace, that they may be cleansed of all sin and serve You with minds free from care. Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. EPISTLE Eph 5:15-21 Brethren: See to it that you walk with care: not as un-wise but as wise, making the most of your time, be-cause the days are evil. Therefore, do not become foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not be drunk with wine, for in that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your hearts to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father. Be subject to one an-other in the fear of Christ. GRADUAL Psalm 102:20, 1 The eyes of all look hopefully to You, O Lord, and You give them their food in due season. V. You open Your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing. Alleluia, alleluia! Ps 107:2 V. My heart is steadfast, O God; my heart is steadfast; I will sing and chant praise to You, my glory. Alleluia. GOSPEL John 4:46-53 At that time, there was a certain royal official whose

son was lying sick at Capharnaum. When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and besought Him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. Jesus therefore said to him, Unless you see signs and wonders, you do not believe. The royal official said to Him, Sir, come down before my child dies. Jesus said to him, Go your way, your son lives. The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and departed. But even as he was now going down, his servants met him and brought word saying that his son lived. He asked of them there-fore the hour in which he had got better. And they told him, Yesterday, at the seventh hour, the fever left him. The father knew then that it was at that very hour in which Jesus had said to him, Your son lives. And he himself believed, and his whole household. OFFERTORY ANTIPHON Psalm 136:1 By the streams of Babylon we sat and wept when we remembered you, O Sion. SECRET May these sacramental rites, O Lord, we beseech You, be our heavenly medicine and expel evil from our hearts. Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. COMMUNION ANTIPHON Ps 118:49-50 Remember Your word to Your servant, O Lord, since You have given me hope. This is my comfort in my af-fliction POSTCOMMUNION That we may be made worthy, O Lord, of Your sacred gifts, make us, we beseech You, ever obedient to Your commandments. Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end.
