FROM ARCHBISHOP CHARLES CHAPUT’S COLUMN ON THE DEATH PENALTY The Archbishop recently wrote about the death penalty on CatholicPhilly.com. This topic is important to religious leaders as well as to every American because it concerns the all-important issue of respect for human life, which is a sacred gift from God. Because of space the entire article cannot be reproduced here, but the most salient points are: U.S. bishops were quick to express their dismay at the decision [to reinstate the death penalty for federal crimes], and having written and spoken against the death penalty for nearly 50 years, I emphatically join my voice to theirs. I drafted some of the key materials for the U.S. bishops’ Respect Life Month in 2005, which focused on the death penalty. At the time I noted the following: On the surface, the case for capital punishment can seem persuasive. Most people live honestly, act decently and want communities governed by justice -- both for the innocent and the guilty. Decent people understandably fear the violence in society. They need to defend their children and themselves. The death penalty has a biblical quality of balance: grievous punishment for grievous crime. Many good people see it as a deterrent to grave evil, and even when the deterrent fails, they reason, at least it can bring justice and emotional closure for the relatives of murder victims. This is a powerful argument, especially in light of the brutality in our daily headlines. But it’s wrong, and we need to turn away from it, both to protect our own God-given human dignity, and also for the sake of the convicted criminal whose life hangs in the balance. The reasons are simple. The evidence against capital punishment shows that it rarely works as a deterrent -- but let's imagine it does. The evidence against capital punishment demonstrates that innocent people are sometimes convicted and executed; that our legal system discriminates against minorities and the poor; and that defendants in many states get disastrous legal counsel unless they can afford otherwise. All these things seem to be true -- but let's ignore them. Instead, let's assume that a defendant is genuinely guilty of a brutal and premeditated murder; that he or she gets excellent legal counsel with correct due process; and that a fair jury convicts our defendant after careful and intelligent deliberation. Killing the guilty is still the wrong choice for a civilized nation. Why? Because it accomplishes nothing. It does not bring back or even honor the dead. It does not ennoble the living. And while it may satisfy society's anger for a while, it cannot even release the murder victim's loved ones from their sorrow, because only forgiveness can do that. What the death penalty does achieve is closure through bloodletting, and violence against violence -- which is not really closure at all, because murder will continue as long as humans sin, and capital punishment can never, by its nature, strike at murder's root. Only love can do that. Executions in Texas averaged nearly two a month in 2004. Ponder that through the eyes of a young person reading the newspaper. Is this how we define ourselves as a God-fearing people? Is this really a fitting monument to murder victims? In “sending a signal” to would-be murderers, do we realize that we are also teaching a message of state-endorsed violence to our own children?... But as Jesus showed again and again by his words and in his actions, the only true road to justice passes through mercy. Justice cannot be served by more violence… In Genesis 4:10-16, humanity's first murderer -- Cain, the man who brought bloodletting into the world - was spared by the God of justice. We should remember that. God’s ways are not our ways; they are wiser and better. God’s heart, unlike ours, is driven by love, not anger. A culture ultimately defines its moral character by the value it places on each human life, particularly those lives that seem most burdensome, inconsequential or unworthy. Violent criminals present an especially harsh moral challenge for us, because their own cruelty has forced them to the margins of society. Recognizing a criminal's humanity is bitterly difficult when our hearts are clouded by pain. But the same needle that poisons the killer in every [execution] also poisons us as a culture. Repaying cruelty with cruelty does not equate to justice. Nothing of substance has changed in 2019. Killing persons in the name of justice is needless and wrong. The Department of Justice is simply enforcing the law, our law, passed by our elected representatives. Which means that all of us, as citizens, are implicated in the coming executions. We can do better as a nation. For the sake of our own moral integrity, we need to do better. We need to abolish the death penalty now. Next week, in a notable lack of humility, I will add own two cents to the Archbishop’s well-reasoned argument against capital punishment. For now, please pray for an enlightened society which rejects violence as a solution to problems. – Father Scott

Live the Liturgy The Prince of Peace wants to set the world on fire? Today’s Gospel sounds more intense than what we may be accustomed to. It's a passage of contradictions. Jesus so clearly prays for unity, yet here he speaks of division. Why would our God who comes as an offering of love speak so frankly about causing relationships to be torn apart? The sobering truth is that Jesus is divisive. We see this throughout the Gospels, as the Pharisees critique him, the Romans condemn him, and not everyone in the crowd is enthusiastic about his words. Jesus has not come for the purpose of dividing, but what he does is so radical that it upends the status quo. And it doesn't end with his preaching and miracles! "There is a baptism with which I must be baptized." Jesus isn't talking about his baptism at the Jordan River, which has already occurred, but the passing through the waters of death on the Cross and rising again to new life in the resurrection. This is divisive stuff! Christ's spiritual fire turned the "fathers" - the Jewish people and Pharisees - against the "sons" - the common people. Not everyone wants the Gospel Jesus is preaching. Not everyone wants to be set on fire with the desire to love others. Some prefer to put on a warm sweater and curl up in front of the TV.

Loving as Jesus did, we, too, might ruffle some feathers. In disciplining our teenage child for sneaking out, we may cause some division (temporarily, we hope!). In standing up to gossip and the spread of cruel rumors in our workplace, we might cause division. In emphasizing the dignity of both the desperate mother and the unborn child, we might cause division. Not everyone wants the Gospel Jesus is preaching. Not everyone wants the Gospel we are invited to live. But that's no excuse not to live it.

In the first forty-one weeks of the 2019 Appeal two hun-dred and eighty-two (282) families have committed more than $141,500 of which $128,786 has been received. The Appeal will support continuing operations of the Parish and will ena-ble us to fund one necessary project. This project is to establish an emer-gency fund for unbudgeted, major expenses for the church; e.g., the ultimate replacement of the church roof. The initial contribution to this emergency fund will be one-third of the moneys collected in the 2019 Parish Appeal. Please complete the Intention Card you received in your letter from Father Scott and place it in the envelope in the collection basket or mail the envelope to the Parish Office. You may also use the Parish Appeal envelope from your packet of envelopes to make your donation. The Finance Council and Father Scott thank you for your generosity.

Rose of Lima was a Peruvian mystic who lived a life of penance and solitude, car-ing for the homeless, elderly and sick. She was nicknamed “Rosa” because of her beauty. Saint Rose of Lima was the first declared saint to the New World (1672). She is the patroness of the Phil-ippines, South America, especially Peru, and also of florists and gardeners.

SAINT ROSE OF LIMA

Saint Bartholomew, also known as Na-thaniel, was summoned to Jesus by the Apostle, Philip. He preached the gospel in India and Armenia, where, according to tradition, he was flayed alive. He is the patron saint of tanners, shoemakers, butchers and against nervous diseases.

SAINTS THIS WEEK

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

This Fall, the RCIA program will be offered here at Assumption BVM. Deacon Ron Lewis will be conducting the instruction and would love to see a crowd of inquirers. If you know someone who has expressed an interest in becoming Catholic or someone who was baptized as a child but has not yet celebrated the sacraments of Confirmation and/or Eucharist, have them contact Deacon Ron by phone or e-mail. It is anticipated that the program will begin in mid-September and, God willing, will culminate on the Easter Vigil next year with the welcoming of several new Catholics to our Parish! Specifics regarding the schedule for instruction will be published soon. So, get the word out! It may result in the greatest journey someone you know will take… the journey to our Catholic Faith in Jesus Christ. Contact Deacon Ron Lewis at [email protected] or call 302-547-8586.

SPECIAL MESSAGE TO THOSE OVER 70 ½ WITH AN IRA

When you paid your 2018 Federal Income Tax were you able to itemize your deductions? No! Did you have charitable expens-es which you were unable to deduct? Yes! Did you know an indi-vidual 70½ years old or older may make a charitable contribution from the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from their IRA and reduce their taxable income without itemizing? Take ad-vantage of the tax laws in 2019. Talk to your financial adviser, your plan administrator or your tax accountant. Some of your fel-low parishioners are using this part of the federal tax law.

Remember: Individuals and eligible spouses can make an IRA charitable rollover (up to $100,000) to ABVM Parish and not have that transfer count towards their taxable income in the year that they made the charitable gift. Charitable rollover amounts will count toward your required minimum distribution. By avoiding the recognition of taxable income, you may also have less of your Social Security income subject to income tax.

Catholic Missionary from one of the 1,111 Mission Dioceses throughout the world. Next weekend, a

Marianist missionary, Father David Fleming, S.M., will be speaking at all of the Masses. The Marianists have

been serving the poorest of the poor in India and Eastern Africa for decades. Through education, job training

and empowerment programs, they help people out of desperate poverty and into lives of hope and dignity.

Archbishop Charles Chaput is hoping everyone in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia will be reminded of their

baptismal call to be Missionary in this Extraordinary Year of Mission through October 2019. To contribute to

the Marianist missionaries, please use the envelope provided in the pews on August 24/25, or if you give

through Faith Direct, add gift under icon for “Summer Missionary Appeal.” Your prayers and your generous
