FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK...........

Dear Parents, Caregivers & Community Members

Kia ora kotou. Another learning focused week at Woodlands has zoomed

by. Well done to our gymnastics teams for their efforts last weekend at the

Southland Gymfest. What talent…. our two Year 4-6 teams both received A

Awards and our Year 7-8 team received an Elite Award!

Teachers are putting together an interesting programme for our Cultural Celebration Day next Thursday 28th September. The event will begin at 11.45am, with a welcome led by the Kapa Haka group. There will be a shared lunch and then children will take part in five activities from different cultures, sharing their learning with you. A programme is enclosed with this newsletter. We would love to see everyone who is able to come along.

Congratulations to last week’s winner of the Principal’s Award for Caring, Quinn Davey. Quinn is very kind, trustworthy, helpful and hard working. She is a fabulous member of Room Tui who loves to share her ideas.

On Friday assembly will be a bit different. It will begin at 2.15pm

and we will have the winning Year 4-8 class speeches presented to

us instead of a class item and song.

Welcome to Shanon Smith who is a University of Canterbury trainee teacher

based in Room Kakapo.

Have you seen the Fonterra TV advertisement featuring our own Mrs Hamill? We have shared it on our Facebook page. Deborah and Mark had a very special experience travelling to Canada to learn about the amazing difference their milk has made to the life of a young accident victim. Congratulations to them for being given the honour of that trip. Voting day is nearly here (at last!) so it will be very interesting to see who the

government is next week. There will be a polling booth here at school, so feel free

to pop in to vote.

Check out our print making! Room Whio students have been learning how to create relief prints, based on cultural images. We used polystyrene meat trays (thank you, Woodlands Butchery) and we used our pencils to engrave our images onto the trays. We had to keep in mind that our image would come out in reverse when printed, so any words had to be written backward - challenging! Once our images were ready, we then used rollers to cover them with printmaking ink and transferred the ink onto our white/coloured paper. We have used a wide variety of cultural images from around the world. Come to Room Whio and find out more about printmaking. We had heaps of fun!

One of the activities we have been participating in during our Cultural Unit this term is

Maori kite making. Each group had to design and create a kite based on a native NZ bird. We are going to

test them, make modifications if needed, and then fly them on our Cultural Day next Thursday.

‘This is our Kereru kite. We added

an orange beak and a green head.

On the tail we used toi toi and we

decorated the body with koru.’

Room Pukeko (6-7 year olds)

This week we had Elgregoe the magician and ventriloquist come back to our school to perform some

amazing tricks. He always bring his very cool animals with him. This year we learnt how to be HEROES to

stop bullying! HEROES stands for:

Being Honest- Showing Empathy and Respect - Looking for Opportunities to help others.

This term our Year 3 students took part in the Cycling Southland “Learn to Bike” programme. They have built up

hand side of our bike, signal stop, signal turn and look behind you.
