O ur favourite time of the week in Room 7 is Monday afternoons, this is when we

have our sensory science session and the students absolutely love it. We offer a

variety of materials and everyday objects and use our senses of touch, taste, smell

and sight to explore the materials.

Fluffy Stuff Recipe:

Get the students to

mix two boxes of

cornflour with a can

of shaving cream,

makes a soft, pretty

smelling dough.

Abdul playing in bubbly

water. The more you

splash, the more bubbles

you get!

Here Antonio is exploring

what happens when we

mix baking soda with

coloured vinegar.

Hannah likes drawing

lines and swirls in the

edible finger paint.

Derrick is mixing cornflour

and shaving cream to

make ‘fluffy stuff’.

Maximus is using all

parts of his body to

explore the coloured

spaghetti; feet,

hands, even his

head!

FUN IN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

Therapeutic Principles

O ur Excel Program

focuses on therapeutic

principles and methods for pre-linguistic and early

language learning. Language is first acquired

through environmental stimulation and positive

interaction.

We can experience this through sight, hearing,

touch, smell, taste; which can be enacted

physically in a purposeful and relevant

activity.

The program provides a sensory experience

utilising as many of our senses

as possible through playing

Gurus are developing their life skills in sweeping, raking, cleaning up our school

premises and managing the horticulture centre with the help of Mercy, Noeleen

PERCEPTUAL MOTOR PROGRAM

What is P.M.P?

P.M.P is a motor coordination program for young children. It is

designed to give students experiences by seeing, hearing,

touching and react ing through sequenced

activities, which are linked to

success in their learning across all

aspects of the school curriculum.

All of our Junior students participate in a weekly group

session with their classroom teachers, following a PM.P

curriculum designed for our students. The

sessions take place in the

multipurpose room.

The main objectives are to improve eye hand, eye foot

coordination, gross and fine motor skills, balance and body and

space awareness. It also aims to

develop language and memory

skills. Students experience going

through, over and under obstacles with a variety of

sensory materials. Slides, planks, tunnels, ladders as well

as a selection of balancing

and jumping equipment

p r o v i d e v a r y i n g

challenges to improve

co-ordination.

Four stations are presented, with one new activity

each week. The activity that has been in the program

for four weeks is then changed on a rotating basis.

These stations are alternated with music and

movement to reinforce skills. Exercises to music

develop balance, crossing the midline and body awareness. Other songs develop

beanbag skills, left and right hand awareness and working with a partner. The music has

been sourced from many areas and is designed to be fun as well as challenging.

Our students experience social skills such as waiting in

line, taking turns and applauding the efforts of others.
