Parish Nurse Update: Autism is a developmental disorder that appears in the first 3 years of life. It can impair the child’s developmental language, social interactions and communication skills. There may also

be a delay in learning to talk, repeated and overused behavior actions such as repeated body rocking, pacing and getting overly upset when routines change. Parents often notice something is not right by the time the child is 18 months to two years old when the child shows signs of difficulty with verbal and nonverbal communication, social interactions and pretend play. The exact cause of Autism is not known. It is thought to be due to a number of factors. Research has shown that genes may be involved as Autism does run in some families. Research continues to look for other causes as well. Based on completed research studies it is reported that there is no link between Autism and vaccinations. It is extremely important that children receive all their childhood vaccinations to keep them from getting a more serious disease that can cause devastating complications and death. Most people with Autism will have some difficulty relating to others, but it has been shown that early diagnosis and treatment have helped many people reach their full potential. Stephen Tarleton Dougherty, a former Catholic priest of the Diocese of Corpus Christi, Texas and former member of the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity, was convicted in Texas of raping a teenage girl in 2011. We are notifying the people within the Diocese of Cheyenne because he also served at St. Ann Parish in Saratoga from November 2003 until December 2004. As a Diocese we reaffirm our commitment to the safety of all God’s children. Together let us be vigilant in providing a safe environment and praying for all victims of clergy sexual abuse. If anyone has experienced abuse by a member of the clergy or anyone representing the Catholic Church, please contact Fr. Carl Gallinger, Vicar General, at 307-638-1530.
