INTRODUCTION

As Patron of the Penrith Referee's Association it gives me great pleasure and pride to introduce this 1987 Annual Report. Since I became the Junior League Delegate to the Referees' Association and from the many visits, over the years, to various grounds throughout the district, I have come to know just about all your active members and of course your very capable administrators.

The manner in which your members conducted themselves and performed their duties each weekend, brought great credit not only to themselves but to those behind the scenes.

Refereeing is like a Rugby League team - most of the action is on the field. However, you cannot have a good team, whether it be a team of footballers or a team of referees, unless you have an efficient and effective team of administrators in support. The Penrith Referees ' Association proved itself a very capable and responsible body and is very highly regarded not only at a District Club level, but at the New South Wales Rugby League. It is well in front of other refereeing associations as far as development and progress is concerned.

I have never known the relationships between the Junior League and the Referees' Association to be on a better or higher level than it is and I know that several people, who shall go unnamed have been determined to ensure that is the case. Junior Rugby League has certainly been the winner and the loud and clear message is that the game is bigger than the individual and the most important factor. When you appreciate the experience and knowledge and the capabilities of the various members of both Executives it is no wonder that 1987 has been a very good year.

- REPORT •s7:

Several of my most satisfying moments in Junior Rugby League were my election as President of the Junior League and being made a life member and my appointment as Patron of your organisation. I am very proud and honoured to serve both organisations.

There was a time during the past season when I thought it all might end. However, when I think about and appreciate all the support I received, the well wishes, the assistance and the friendship of so many of your members, of the Junior League and many other people, I know now where I got the determination and drive that was so important when it was needed most. For that I take this opportunity to express my very sincere thanks and appreciation to everyone responsible for supporting me. There are too many to name.

We all have a huge responsibility to ensure that what we do is professional and in the best interests of Junior Rugby League generally, player, officials, supporters, referees and everyone associated with our great game.

I am looking forward to the future, the coming season in particular and my continued involvement with Junior Rugby League and your organisation. I congratulate your members for the 1987 successes and I hope that we all can work together and enjoy the satisfaction and many rewards that involvement, co-operation and good decision-making will bring us all.

Kevin Wood Patron.

PENRITH REFEREEs• ASSOCIATION=

PRESIDENT'S REPORT

1987 has been a successful season for our Association and my thanks must go to all members who have worked so hard for the benefit of Penrith Referees' Association and Rugby League in general.

Congratulations to all active members for maintaining the high standard of refereeing in the district, especially those who were selected for the major games. Special congratulations must go to Phil Battin, Michael Bunnage and Tony Butler who were successful in reaching higher standards.

I would also like to pay tribute to Jack Turner for his efforts and service to and on behalf of Rugby League in the Penrith District. Jack has been a hard-working, devoted member of this Association and he has fostered and built the image of the Penrith Referees' Association. He has held numerous positions within the Association and I feel that there are many members today, who owe their position and status to the dedication shown by Jack.

It has been a privilege to work with and know a person of Jack's calibre. I respect his friendship and to you Jack and to Norma may I on behalf of the Association thank you for all that you have done for us and wish you both well in the future.

One of the proudest moments I have had during my years in the Association was to be present at the 1987 Junior League Presentation Night when Joe Beacroft was thanked and honored by the Junior League on his retirement from active refereeing. Joe received a standing ovation from officials and players from the clubs and it was pleasing to see the appreciation shown by the Junior League.

I would like to pay tribute to Joe for his efforts and service to and on behalf of this Association over the past twenty years. I doubt whether there is a footballer in the Penrith Junior League who will not remember "Big Joe" for his friendly and sincere manner in which he carried out his refereeing duties. To you Joe, may I say thank you on behalf of so many.

Page 11: 21st ANNUAL REPORT AND BALANCE SHEET 1987penrithreferees.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/21st-Annual-Re… · Frank Walsh Cyril Wigzell B.E.M. (dec) Jack Harris O.A.M. Les Brennan

- REPORT •s7:

To Kevin Wood and Bill Hubbard of the Junior League, thank you for your support and assistance during the past year. I am sure all members join me in wishing Kevin a speedy return to good health and we look forward to our continued association with him.

Congratulations to Reg Newsome on receiving Life Membership. Reg has given many hours of dedicated service to this Association and he is a worthy recipient of the award. To the winners of all other awards - well done!

Serious consideration must be given to the future of the Junior Branch of the Association. Several times during the year, meetings had to be cancelled as they lacked a quorum. This is extremely disappointing after the enthusiasm and support given by the Junior Branch last season.

One of the pleasing aspects of this year has been the recruitment of new members. To all members, new or old, may I offer these words of advice: Look back at the past season and see if you are satisfied with the results you attained. If not, then analyse why not; endeavour to pin-point any weaknesses; accept criticism and absorb advice.

Each member should set themselves a goal for the new season and strive to achieve it. Do not become complacent, aim to do better in your refereeing.

To all office bearers, thank you for the manner in which you carried out your respective duties on our behalf. To Peter Butler, Phil Sanders, Jack Harris and Jack Turner a special thanks for your efforts.

To my fellow Executive Officers, my thanks for your support and assistance throughout the season. It has been a busy year and these members have done a conscientious job at all times and have had the welfare of the whole Association in mind when making their decisions.

Finally, on behalf of my wife and family, I must express most sincerely our appreciation of the support given to us in our time of sadness.

Don Courts President.

SECRETARY'S DESK

Mr Chairman and fellow members,

It is with pleasure that I submit for your perusal the Annual Report and Treasurer's Financial Statement for the season 1987 and, I trust, its subsequent adoption.

Ju nior Rugby League in Penrith underwent a change in direction in 1987, w ith the decision to appoint an Administrative Officer, on a full time basis. Don Feltis accepted the challenge to foster the largest Junior League in the world, with great professionalism. The attendances at Grand Finals, bear witness that some difficult and unpopular decisions taken in January will benefit Rugby League in the long term.

Our relationship with all sections of the Junior League have been of the highest standing. In addition to Don Feltis, our thanks must go to long-time friend and President, Kevin Wood, Register and Referees' Delegate Bill 'The Hammer' Hubbard, the Judiciary Committee chaired by John Mergan and all officials who assisted throughout the year.

The District competition saw a streamlined S-team First Division competition. Members worked tirelessly to officiate in some 176 games of Ruby League every weekend. The attitude and dedication of the active-members throughout the season was exceptional. You indeed enhance the reputation of the Penrith Association by your efforts.

Congratulations belong to Gary Haines on his consistent season culminating in his appointment to the A Grade Grand Final.

The Harold Matthews Competition returned to our district in 1987. Fine organisation by the Junior League was matched by a fine standard of refereeing from our members with Michael Quinn appointed to the Final between Illawarra and Penrith.

Congratulions to the District Club on the achievments of 1987. In winning the Reserve Grade Premiership and reaching the semi-finals in the Under 23s' competition, Penrith have laid promise to the future. How pleasing it is to see so many of our local Juniors find a place in the grade ranks. Particular thanks to Ross Gigg and Rosemary Wilkinson for their assistance throughout the year.

Page 13: 21st ANNUAL REPORT AND BALANCE SHEET 1987penrithreferees.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/21st-Annual-Re… · Frank Walsh Cyril Wigzell B.E.M. (dec) Jack Harris O.A.M. Les Brennan

- REPORT •s7:

Inter-District competition involved four of our members - Michael Bunnage, Michael Quinn, Justin Lavin and Michael Lynch. All members gave good accounts of themselves with Michael Bunnage refereeing the Jersey Flegg Final. Our congratulations go out to him.

In the grade ranks, Peter Filmer was appointed to his initial First Grade centre while Phillip Battin officiated in a number of Under 23's centres before returning to the touch line in a creditable first year in grade. Both members brought credit to their Association.

Life Membership was presented to Reg Newsome. What a fine stalward Reg has been for the Association over the years. A fitting reward to a true gentleman. This year also saw the recognition of the friendship of N.S.W. Referees' Secretary, Frank Walsh by the presentation of Honorary Life Membership. We are certainly proud to add Frank's name to our Honour Roll.

Once again in 1987 the Penrith and Illawarra Referees' Associations Exchange resulted in success for Rugby League and all involved. Six referees' were able to gain the experience of another District's football. Our thanks to Mike Taylor, Illawarra's Secretary, for the high level of co-operation and fabulous hospitality afforded our visitors to your District. Plans for an expanded Exchange in 1988 perhaps involving Junior referees are currently being muted.

Capital Motors Used Cars were again allied to us, as our sponsor. Their continued support of our Association has brought with it financial stability as well as tangible benefits. We are indeed most appreciative of their endorsement. The Associastion would also like to express its' appreciation of the continued support of the TNT Company. Both through the funds made available through the N.S.W. Referees' Sponsorship Committee, and the support of the District Referees ' Seminar, TNT are making a real contribution to the development of refereeing for the future.

The tireless work of the Social Committee has once again born fruit. Peter Butler and his committee have done a fine job in providing a social calendar the envy of many Associations. Certainly the '87 Merit Award found a worthy home with Peter.

In conclusion, may I thank my fellow Executive Officers for their advice and assistance throughout the year. To all who held office, I extend the Associations' special thanks. In particular, I thank the active referees. without whose dedication and pride, 1987 would have been somewhat less than the fine year that it was.

Michael Lynch Hon. Secretary.

TREASURER·s REPORT

Well, another season draws to a close and from a financial standpoint the Association continues to consolidate in most areas. A good pointer to the 'wealth' of any organisation, is a significant growth in real capital. Which, by virtue of our investments, continues to be the position of our Association. We indeed experienced a 60% capital growth in 1987.

Whilst growth in capital is important, if the return from that capital is not being used to offset costs in the General Fund but merely allowed to consolidate that capital, then General Fund expenditures must be monitored closely.

Owing to the rising costs involved in both the administration of this Association and maintaining the quality and quantity of social functions, our General Fund is suffering. So it is time to make a decision. Do we continue to boost our investments or do these investments begin to pay their interests back to the General Fund?

Our investments are geared towards 1991 when this Association will need a vast sum. Considering these factors, my recommendation to the members is to increase the Association Levy and not touch our investment. This, however, is a decision that the members must make.

In making this report I wish to thank many people and then make a comment based on my two years back on the Executive side of matters. My thanks go to Rosemary Wilkinson, Don Feltis, Kevin Wood, Bill Hubbard and my fellow Executive Officers for all the ways in which they have helped me in 1987. To my wife, Debbie, a big thanks, not only for her clerical support but her moral support and understanding.

I have been your Treasurer for the past two seasons and I have enjoyed being able to apply my professional knowledge to serve the Association in the financial area.

Page 15: 21st ANNUAL REPORT AND BALANCE SHEET 1987penrithreferees.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/21st-Annual-Re… · Frank Walsh Cyril Wigzell B.E.M. (dec) Jack Harris O.A.M. Les Brennan

- REPORT •s7:

My concern lies in the number of times your Executive members have meet regarding disciplinary matters that could have been avoided with a little thought and self-control. We as referees expect players to respect and accept our decisions every weekend in relation to the laws of the game of Rugby League. Yet some of our members, who are guided by the consitution and by-laws do not seem to be able to accept those rules and conduct themselves within the framework of those standards. As the Treasurer and a member of the Executive I find this aspect difficult to reconcile.

Finally, I would urge all members to study carefully the financial statements that follow - they make for interesting reading.

Peter Filmer Treasurer.

CO-ORDINATOR•s REPORT

The year 1987 has again been a busy one. All sub-committees have worked to capacity.

Recruitment although disappointing in numbers has achieved steady results . Again John Harris has assisted in this area with lectures to all levels of the Association and prospective referees. On behalf of the members a vote of thanks must be recorded for the time and effort that John has given the Association over the years.

Association training has progressed steadily under the guidance of Gary Haines. Gary stepped into the breach when the Co-ordinator began to falter due to health reasons. Reports on the training programme conducted, have been of a high standard, but as in most cases within this Association attendances fluctuated to a degree where it was considered that it may be better not to continue.

To his credit Gary persisted and the numbers picked up and the programme proved beneficial to the majority of those who attended. To the few who did attend training with a 'don't care' and disruptive attitude, your disruptions have been noted and may well affect your future invitations to these programmes. Thank you Gary.

To the District Club I extend the Associations' gratitude, for allowing members of the Association to participate with the grade squads in early training programmes.

Congratulations to the members of the Association who participated in the InterDistrict fixtures. All performed to the credit of the Association, to themselves and the Penrith District. Michael Bunnage displayed his potential to the N.S.W. Rugby League with his performances throughout the competition. This culminated in his appointment to referee the Jersey Flegg Final. Top effort, Michael.

All augurs well for the Association in its future years. A majority of the younger brigade have been given opportunities throughout the season and have grabbed them with both hands. A word of caution to these young people, do not relax as there are others behind you who are waiting to fill your place.

- REPORT •s7:

To the following members, I believe the Association owes a vote of gratitude -Phil Sanders, Peter Kerr, Merv Edwards, Reg Newsome and Laurie Watts. These members, together with the Co-ordinator, under difficult circumstances, were required to look after the appointment of referees in the latter part of the season. Their approach and dedication to the task placed upon them can be measured by the support received from the large majority of members they served throughout that difficult period

In concluding this report I would like to dedicate the following to the younger referees of the Association.

Success only comes to those who work for it. The Association has placed at your disposal the mechanisms by which you can succeed. If you have any problems the best way to escape them is to solve them, attend your training sessions, listen to your lectures, seek the assistance of your peers . The only limitation on your realisation of tomorrow are your doubts of today.

If you believe you have the necessary referee qualities, then hard work is the only way for you to make good use of them. Serve your Association with reliability, intergity, honesty and sincerity and you will succeed.

Jack Turner Co-ordinator

VALE To all our members who lost a loved one during 1987, the Association extends its deepest sympathies and hopes that you found comfort in the friendship and support of your fellow members.

APPOINTMENTS

Penrith referees blew time on in over three thousand six hundred games of Rugby League in 1987. What a staggering achievement! Just think if there was an average of 16 penalties per game, 15 scrums,5 tries, 3 goals and 4 injury stoppages - then our merry whistle blowers have spun the pea in their Acme Thunders about 154 800 times!

APPOINTMENTS BOARD SECRETARY

After problems in the early part of the season the Appointments Board settled down to a fairly normal routine. The reconvened Board was comprised of non-active members selected by our Co-ordinator, Jack Turner.

The season 1987 saw the Association once again lose members from its active ranks for many and varied reasons. The two most significant in my opinion, were the heavy work-load and the abuse that they were subjected to at some grounds. The Board sincerely hopes that both these problems are rectified prior to the commencement of the season of 1988.

To my fellow Board members, thank you for your efforts. To all members who had their appointments changed at short notice and helped out in many ways, a special thanks.

May you all have a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Phil Sanders Appointments Board Secretary

DISTRICT SEMINAR

The year 1986 saw the first District Referees' Seminar conducted by the N.S.W. Referees' Association for referees with the potential to achieve grade status.

The seminar, conducted at the Academy of Sport, Narrabeen was made possible by the generous support of TNT Company. Held over three days and two nights, the seminar covered lectures on all aspects of refereeing from the physical to the psychological. In addition, each participant underwent rigorous fitness testing.

1986 saw Penrith represented by Phillip Battin, Michael Quinn, Tony Butler and Michael Lynch. In 1987 we again have four representatives in Michael Bunnage, Michael Quinn, Tom Peet and Michael Lynch. We wish them well and know that they will represent us proudly.

ANNUAL GOLF DAY

The Western Suburbs (Campbelltown) Referees' Association will be hosting the N.S.W. Referees' Golf Day at the Rugby League Country Club, Camden on Sunday January 24th, 1988. We have been invited to enter two teams of up to eight players. If you are interested please contact Reg Newsome prior to December 1st, 1987.

SOCIALLY ...

Fellow members,

It gives me a great deal of pleasure to reflect upon the years social activities. Many a pleasant evening was spent in the company of members, their wives and friends.

PACK & SADDLE RESTAURANT AND MOVIE NIGHT A party of some forty members and guests assembled at the Pack and Saddle Restaurant to feast on the renowned spare-ribs - and feast they did. Performer of the night was Alan "food" Wheatland who devoured 14 of the little devils! On we moved to the nearby Cinema for the screening of "Platoon". It was generally agreed that it was not the movie to watch before dinner!

EL CABALLO BLANCO Mother's Day saw us visit the famous El Caballo Blanco. A fine night with a great floorshow. Highlight of the evening was undoubtedly Peter Shaw's "mockwedding" to a young blond lady on stage. Poor Pete - he looked so miserable!

FIREWORKS NIGHT All roads led to Ken Wheatland's rural estate at North Richmond. Unfortunately the threatening weather kept attendances down. Those who did brave the elements certainly got a bang out of preceedings! Richmond Police are still searching for a 5' 10" maniac who throws unexploded fireworks into a bonfire!Special thanks to Ken Wheatland for the use of his property and John Robinson for his generator and generous assistance.

- REPORT •s7:

VICARY'S WINERY An old favourite haunt of the Penrith Referees'. Numbers were down on previous years, but those who did attended enjoyed a good night.

LADIES NIGHT The highlight of the social year, was once again held at Peggy Sue's SO's Restaurant. 1987 saw nearly 170 people in attendance to witness the presentation of Life Membership of Penrith Referees' Association to Reg Newsome. Well done Reg. Most amazingly Reg keep his acceptance speech to just 3 minutes. We also saw the formation of a new club on this evening. The 21 club in recognition of the contribution of our founding members wives was insituted by Jack Harris. Certainly a fitting tribute to some long-serving friends.

Unfortunately, Peggy Sue's is unavailable in 1988. We have however secured a booking in the function centre currently under construction at Panthers. We trust this change in venue will not affect this night's reputation as the finest in refereeing circles.

SENIOR JUNIOR FOOTBALL MATCH This traditional fixture saw probably the finest match for some years. The Senior members actually won the game, although I feel a draw would have been a fairer result. The game was played in good spirit and was well controlled by Peter Filmer, who I hope gets the nod again in the future.

STILL TO COME ... As this report goes to print, we still have four functions to be held. The Referee's Camp at Frazer Park, Munmorah State Recreation Area; Annual Presentation Night at Windsor Leagues Club; Family Camp at Freeman's Point, Munmorah State Recreation Area and the Christmas Tree at Mitchell Park on November 29th.

CONCLUSION In closing I would like to thank all members of the Social Committee. Especially our "Clayton's" member - John Robinson, who was a great help throughout the Season. Special thanks also to Barry Izzard and Phil Heeb. Please accept my sincere gratitude for the many hours of tireless work you both contributed.

Finally, may I take this opportunity to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year.

Peter Butler Social Secretary.

JUNIOR COACHING PANEL

It is with great pleasure that I present to members the 1987 Junior Coaching Panel Report.

First and foremost I would like to thank the members of the Coaching Panel for their time and efforts to assist with the development of our Junior Referees.

It would also be remiss of me not to thank the following members for their help throughout the 1987 season:

Jack Turner for his great lecture on aspects of refereeing. I hope the member's present were inspired to become better referees as a result of Jack's lecture.

Reg Newsome for two very good lectures on touch-judging as well as the kind use of his premises.

I would also like to extend a special thank-you to Grade Referee Kevin Roberts for his time and obvious fore-thought he gave in attending as a guest speaker at a Junior Branch meeting.

Gary Haines for the time and effort he expended in the physical training of our Junior referees.

The high points of the season were the appointment of Glen Dunn to the Under 14 Division 3 Grand Final in only his second year as a referee; Peter Lawson's Under 13 Div 1 Grand Final appointment; Sean Bourke's Under 12 Div 1 Grand Final and Jason Robinson's Under 12 Div 3 Grand Final in only his first year as a referee.

Once again my thanks to the coaching panel for their efforts and to each of them and all members and their families best wishes for the Festive Season and I hope to see you all in the 1988 season.

SENIOR REFEREES SNATCH VICTORY IN A THRILLER MATCH

In a match which held the crowds' interest throughout, the Penrith Senior Referees snatched a last minute 24-20 victory over the Juniors at Windsor Oval.

The first quarter saw total domination by the Juniors with a superb solo try by David Bonham giving them a 4 - 0 lead.

The senior branch lacked team-work and were caught time and again with ball at the base of the ruck.

Late in the first quarter, Junior Branch Coach, Justin Lavin added to the Seniors woes with another try for an 8-0 lead .

The second quarter saw the match take a dramatic turn . The size and power of the Senior

team was beginning to tell on the younger opponents.

Peter "Crusher" Smith was finding holes in the defence through the middle and the giant frame of Tony Fahey barged the line for a try.

The second quarter belonged to the Seniors with only a Justin Lavin try to raise the younger mens' spirit.

A blinding run from David Quinn was ended in a crunching tackle by newcomer Fred Lucas.

Scoring a series of quick tries the seniors went to half time leading by 20-12.

The break seemed to inspire the Juniors who came out firing and snatched back another try through coach, Lavin.

The running game of Brett Wright and David Bonham had the Seniors gasping.

Several opportunities to both sides came to nought with three-quarter time scores at 20- 16.

Tempers frayed early in the last quarter with a couple of players given an early B.B.Q.

After a couple of chances the juniors posted the equaliser with 9 mins left on the clock.

The scoreline hung at 20 all with play deep in the Senior's half when the Juniors refused a 'gift' penalty goal from straight in front.

With 17 sees left on the clock Seniors' · centre Luke Evans snatched a loose pass to score the match- winning try in the corner.

JUNIOR BRANCH

PRESIDENT'S REPORT

My friends and fellow referees,

It is with a great deal of pleasure that I present the 1987 Junior Branch's Presidential Report.

The year 1987 started in a very encouraging fashion although members attendance at meetings was an area of concern. On a number of occassions we were only just able to attract the numbers needed to form a quorum for a meeting. My sincere thanks to those Junior Referees who took the trouble to attend each meeting. It is these members who make our Junior Branch strong.

In my last year of refereeing, I would like to express my gratitude to all senior members who have shown a special interest in the Junior members. In particular, I would like to extend thanks to Junior Coaching Officer, Mr Peter Butler, the Senior Branch Executive and Messrs Justin Lavin, Marc Kerr and Luke Evans.

To the Juniors, may I offer my thanks for your support throughout the year. You have shown that you are dedicated to the aims of refereeing and the ideals of sport. You have also shown support for one another. With those Juniors who will leave our ranks to join the Senior Branch in the 1988 season, go our best wishes and the hope that they continue to enjoy their refereeing. Remember that you can only get from refereeing what you put into it.

Finally may I wish all Juniors my best for the coming Festive Season and the season 1988.

Sean Bourke Junior President.

THE YEAR IN REVIEW

In this my first year on the Junior Executive, I've been happy to be associated with the Penrith Referee's Junior Branch.

During the year it seemed as if we would lose our Branch due to the lack of attendance at meetings. However we came through.

This year the Juniors have been prominent in many important games of Rugby League. Congratulations to Sean Bourke, Glen Dunn and Shane Alsop for their Harold Matthews semi-final appointments, also to the Juniors for their Saturday and Sunday Grand Final Appointments.

I'd like to thank the members of the Junior Coaching Panel for their help and advice during the season.

Also I hope all the Juniors making the step up to the senior ranks have all the luck, fun and enjoyment that they have had in the Junior Branch.

With the Festive season approaching I would like to take this opportunity in wishing all members and their families the best for Christmas and the N ew Year.

Michael Warnock Junior Assistant Secretary.

JUNIOR MERIT AWARD

The Junior Merit Award Committee comprising Ralph Lohse, Darren Parsons and Patrick lJlloa carefully considered the efforts and dedication of all Junior referees before deciding upon the eventual winner JASON ROBINSON. To win the Michael Grady Merit Award is an achievement at any stage of one's career, but to win it in your first year of refereeing is a truely outstanding feat. Well done Robbo!

THAT FOOTY GAME !

On the Friday night of the 25th September, 1987, the battle of the decade was about to take place. The tension in the air was so thick you could cut it with a knife. ·

Page 37: 21st ANNUAL REPORT AND BALANCE SHEET 1987penrithreferees.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/21st-Annual-Re… · Frank Walsh Cyril Wigzell B.E.M. (dec) Jack Harris O.A.M. Les Brennan

PENRITH REFEREEs• ASSOCIATION=

Things didn't look good for the Juniors. Firstly, our captain, Dave Quinn, informed us that we lost the toss. Next after a well run race, we lost the relay by a very narrow margin. Now it was time for the big one.

The crowd erupted in a frenzy as the referee, Mr Peter Filmer, blew time on for the start of the game. After the first quarter, it was apparent that the 'heavies' from the seniors were taking their toll on the Juniors. Our game plan was nonexistent!

After leading for a short period, we found ourselves trailing 20 - 12 in the final quarter, and to our credit, made a remarkable comeback. With five minutes to full-time the score was 20 all. It was only a lapse in defense, and individual brilliance by one senior player, that snatched victory for them right on full-time. The final score 24- 20.

The game itself was an open game of Rugby League with both teams displaying outstanding attacking and defensive skills, in particular the Junior forward pack, creating a defensive line equal to any.

Junior's Men of the Match, picked by John Robinson, were Justin Lavin for an outstanding all round effort, and John MacDonald for his 100% performance in defense, he didn't take a backward step.

Special thanks to the whole of the Juniors team, bad luck guys, the 'OLDIES' team, supporters, Captain Quinnie, Coach Justin Lavin, Trainer John Robbo (Dad), and especially the referee, Mr Peter Filmer.

Jason Robinson Junior Social Secretary.
