(www.rmwp.org) is a local affiliate of the National Writing Project, whose motto is “teachers teaching teachers” and whose mission is to provide a forum for teachers of all grade levels and in all content areas to study and develop new and innovative strategies for literacy instruction. The National Writing Project provides grant money to over two-hundred sites across the United States, touching the lives of thousands of teachers and tens-of-thousands of students every year. The RMWP, which began in 2004, has had a direct impact on over 100 teachers from North-Central Alabama through its annual Invitational Summer Institute, and those teachers (now called “fellows” of RMWP) have created and implemented new professional development opportunities for hundreds more teachers in their service areas.

The 21st Century Literacies conference is just one of many professional development programs implemented by RMWP fellows. Members of the RMWP would like to thank Ben Davis, Sandra Marshall, and the RMWP conference planning committee for their tireless effort to make the first annual 21st Century Literacies conference a reality. We would also like to thank two UAB administrators for their generous support and for welcoming all of us this morning: Dr. Jean Ann Linney, Interim Dean, College of Arts and Sciences; and Peter Bellis, Chair, Department of English. Finally, we thank all of the teachers and administrators who are attending this conference today. We applaud your personal dedication to lifelong teaching and learning.Type to enter text
