Stockton Riverside College (SRC) is the only college inthe region to offer the three year Polymer apprenticeship, which was developed in partnership with the Stockton-based manufacturer to deliver quality training to youngpeople and fill a skills gap.

Phil Cook, principal at Stockton Riverside College (SRC),visited Nifco UK’s Eaglescliffe factory, to learn about thework of apprentices using moulding machines and six-axis robots.

Three apprentices - James Harrington, 19, RobbieThwaites, 16, and Ryan Brain, 18 are currently beingtrained on the course, working at Nifco and studyingtowards an NVQ level two in Polymer Services at SRC.The apprentices work and attend college one day perweek to develop their knowledge and experience inpolymer processing.

Said James: “I feel like I’m getting the best of both worldsworking here because I’m gaining some new skills, gettingvaluable work experience and I’ll have a qualification.”

“As part of our ambitious expansion plans, we need toensure we have a workforce with the relevant skills toenable us to achieve our goals. We are currentlydeveloping a career path with colleges and universitiesand hope that our apprentices will continue their studiesthrough to degree level.”

Tomorrow’s World....There could be as many as 5,500 jobvacancies in Advanced Manufacturingin Tees Valley between now and 2020.

Information from employerssuggests that the majority of thesejobs are likely to be in:

Professional roles – Graduateengineers and managers

 Associate professional and technicalroles

Skilled trades, and a smaller number of processoperative vacancies

As experienced and skilled people retire or leave theworkforce, many of their jobs will be taken by otherskilled people already in the workforce, but this will alsocreate vacancies further down the chain andemployers will need young people to join theircompanies through apprenticeships, after college oruniversity to take up their jobs and become the skilledand professional people of tomorrow.
