Differentiated Instruction:

Relationship between students

learning style and their majors

EFL teacher with about 8 years of experience in all educative levels. Her personal philosophy is guided by true love for learning! Students need to know we like them, we care about them, and we trust them. When students feel safe, learning can be constructed. Students will only learn when they are interested! How can we make them to be interested? Not all students learn the same way, not all of them share their interests, and not all of them should be evaluated similarly. We as educators need to implement innovative and pertinent strategies that incorporate different intelligences (Gardener, 1995), and all six categories contained in Bloom’s Taxonomy (2001) to lead students from different majors to learn the same goal content, and take them to the next level. Let’s make the difference!

The field of Teaching English as a Foreign

Language undergoes diverse challenges in

helping learners communicate their

thoughts and ideas effectively. In line with

this view, authentic audiovisual resources

can be integrated in the EFL classroom as

potential linguistic input to foster students’

speaking skills. Authentic materials are

resources that have been produced for real

communication and they help learners

develop a great range of communicative

skills as they provide students with the

opportunity to be exposed to the language

as it is used in real settings.

Ecuadorian Media and

Ethnicity

During the last years, one very common

phenomenon taking place in the

Ecuadorian University is “student

mobility;” this movement of students

inside and outside Ecuadorian borders is

relatively new in most of our

cosmopolitan cities. Along with this

movement, comes a new kind of

challenge for all the stakeholders in our

educational system. Cultural shock and

cultural adaptation in the classroom play

an important role in our students’

education. From this, we need to take

into consideration that it is Ethnicity

Page 10: 21st Century Skills: What are they and how can we develop ... and DELTA (Certificate and Diploma in English Language Teaching ... English Language Program ELP at Yachay ... adults,

what carries the greatest cultural

baggage into the classroom. Thus,

understanding how Ethnicity manifests

in various aspects can help us cope with

several culturally related challenges.

Educational polices tell us that learners who

do not achieve the required score have to

repeat the course. Teachers simply follow

the rule without further analysis. However,

have we wondered the causes that keep the

learner from being promoted to the next

level? Or how will this decision impact on

her academic development. This is a good

question that requires our analysis before

being answered.

Workshop Description

In many countries and cultures, reading

is a normal part of life. Through reading,

we can learn about the world, our

history and cultures. Our imagination

can be swept away to mystical worlds of

dragons and knights, or we can

investigate and learn about some of the

most exotic locations on earth. Reading

opens our student’s minds to subliminal

learning and the proven benefits that it

provides for second language

In this workshop, we will look at a

selection of classroom activities that are

designed to make reading both fun and

productive for school aged learners.
