ANNOUNCEMENTS
All our months at Edison are busy, but January and February are especially packed. There are lots of academic activities as the first semester ends and we evaluate progress. Our faculty is also continuing lots of professional development work on math problem solving and writing in the Common Core. And there are an enormous number of special projects in January/February: Box Tops Collection, a Raffle, the Corazon de Vida Project, the Kindness and Justice Challenge, Valentines Dance, Silent Auction, Family Engagement Night, School Smarts Academy, parent workshops on Sexual Development of Children and Dealing with Anxiety in Childhood, Catalina 5
th grade trip, and the list goes on. Whew!!!
Friday we hosted several visitors from Corazon de Vida, the foundation that we partner with to support orphanages in Baja California. Each year Edison collects supplies for the orphanages and some families take them to Tijuana. I want to particularly encourage you to contribute something to the Corazon de Vida drive. Place it in the box in the breezeway near cafecito. Whatever you can give enriches the lives of children and we’d like to fill the bus with supplies. Our Friday visitors included three young adults who grew up in the orphanages and are now in college. They shared their life experiences with some of our 3
rd, 4
th, and 5
th grade students in what was a really eye-opening
conversation for our students. Some of them were orphaned, others were abused or their parents could not feed or clothe them. They spoke about sharing a bedroom with 20 other children, having nothing that was their own except their tooth brushes, days that were scheduled from 6:00 am to lights out at 8:00 pm, and what it was like to live with 50-100 other children and just a few adults. When students asked what they did if they didn’t like the food that was being served, they answered that they didn’t have that luxury (“You just eat what’s there or go hungry.”) Birthdays were discussed (“If they remember it’s your birthday, everyone gives you a hug and sings Las Mañanitas.”). They spoke about having nobody to help with homework (“You just work at it until you figure it out.”). They told of washing clothes and linens without washing machines, making their own tortillas and helping cook and clean. And they spoke of their determination to succeed in school in order to reunite brothers and sisters still in orphanages, to create loving families of their own, and help the orphanages that raised them. They told our students that if they were lucky enough to have parents, to please thank them for all they do to feed, clothe and love them. Their lives were almost utterly lacking in the things our students take for granted – but they are rich in motivation, gratitude and determination. It was a powerful learning experience!

Valentines Raffle –If you’ve already sold your tickets, parents can pick up additional tickets from the front office. There are cash prizes for winners and incentives for individual students.
Mid-Year Progress Reports -- At the end of this week, students will be bringing home a mid-year progress report showing their growth during the first semester and progress toward the end-of-year standards. Remember, that this is a report on progress toward standards that they are not expected to master until the END of the year. If you have any questions about how to interpret the progress report, or how to use this information to support your child’s continued growth, please contact your child’s teacher.
Immunizations – Please see the letter from School Nurse Rachel Bressler included in this week’s packet. The current measles outbreak underscores the risk for unimmunized children to contract a preventable disease. Please be aware that during outbreaks, unimmunized students (including those who have not provided documentation of immunization) may be excluded from school for the length of the incubation period. That’s 21 days for measles! The re-introduction of these preventable diseases also poses risks to students who are “immune deficient” and cannot be vaccinated. SMMUSD recommends that all children have up to date immunizations. Westside Family Clinic at 1711 Ocean Park Blvd in Santa Monica provides FREE immunizations for children under 18 years old the first Saturday of each month from 12-2:00. No appointment is necessary.

Grade Parent Meeting on Math in Middle School –John Adams Middle School (JAMS) Principal Steven Richardson will speak about what Common Core Math Standards mean in middle school and how JAMS organizes its math offerings. In the Edison cafetorium on Monday, February 9 from 8:30-9:30 am.

Todos nuestros meses en Edison son ocupados, pero enero y febrero son especialmente empacados. Hay muchas actividades académicas mientras se termina el primer semestre y evaluamos progreso. Y hay una cantidad enorme de proyectos especiales en enero/febrero: Colección Tapas de Cajas, una Rifa, el Proyecto de Corazón de Vida, El Reto de Bondad y Justicia, Baile de San Valentín, Subasta Silenciosa, Noche de Involucramiento de Padres, Academia de Inteligencias Escolares, talleres de padres sobre el Desarrollo Sexual de Niños y Lidiando con Ansiedad en la Niñez, Paseo de 5º Grado a Catalina, y la lista sigue. ¡Increíble! El viernes invitamos a varios visitantes de Corazón de Vida, la fundación con la cual nos hemos asociado para apoyar a los orfelinatos en Baja California. Cada año Edison colecta materiales para los orfelinatos y algunas familias los llevan a Tijuana. Yo quiero particularmente animarlos a que contribuyan algo a la colección de Corazón de Vida. Nuestros visitantes del viernes incluyeron a tres adultos jóvenes quienes crecieron en los orfelinatos y ahora están en la universidad. Se discutieron los cumpleaños (“Si se acordaban que era tu cumpleaños, todos te dan un abrazo y te cantan Las Mañanitas.”). Ellos hablaron sobre el hecho de no tener alguien quien les ayudará con la tarea (“Le trabajas hasta que lo averigües.”). Platicaron sobre lavar ropa y sábanas sin máquinas de lavar, hacer sus propias tortillas y ayudar a cocinar y limpiar. Y hablaron de la determinación de tener éxito en la escuela para reunirse con sus hermanos y hermanas que seguían en los orfelinatos, para crear sus propias familias con amor, y ayudar a los orfelinatos que les ayudaron a ellos. Ellos les contaron a nuestros estudiantes que tienen suerte de tener padres, y que por favor les dieran las gracias por todo lo que hacen para darles de comer, vestirlos y quererlos. Sus vidas fueron casi carentes de las cosas que nuestros estudiantes toman por hecho – pero son ricos en motivación, agradecimiento y determinación. ¡Fue una experiencia poderosa de aprendizaje!

Reportes de Progreso de Medio Año – al final de esta semana, los estudiantes llevarán a sus hogares los reportes de progreso de medio año mostrando su crecimiento durante el primer semestre y el progreso hacia las metas del fin de año. Acuérdense, que este reporte es sobre el progreso hacia las normas que no se espera que dominen hasta el FIN del año. Si tienen preguntas sobre cómo interpretar el reporte de progreso, o cómo usar esta información para apoyar el crecimiento continuo de su hijo/a, por favor comuníquense con el maestro/a de su hijo/a.
Inmunizaciones – Por favor miren la carta de parte de la Enfermera Rachel Bressler incluida en el paquete de esta semana. El brote de sarampión presente aumenta el riesgo a que los niños no vacunados contraigan esta enfermedad que es prevenible. Por favor estén alertas que durante brotes, niños quienes no están vacunados (incluyendo a los que no han proveído documentación de inmunizaciones) pueden ser excluidos de la escuela por el plazo del periodo de incubación. ¡Eso es 21 días para el sarampión! La re-introducción de estas enfermedades prevenibles también pone riesgos a los estudiantes quienes son “inmune deficientes” y no pueden ser vacunados. SMMUSD recomienda que todos los niños tengan las inmunizaciones al corriente. IMMUNIZATION ALERT—JANUARY 2015
The current measles outbreak in Orange County underscores the importance of immunizing as many
children in our community as possible. It is also a reminder that during an outbreak of a preventable
disease such as measles, unimmunized students (including those who have not provided documentation
of immunization) may be excluded from school for the length of the incubation period--21 days for
measles.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
We encourage all students who have not been immunized to get immunized. Westside Family Clinic at
1711 Ocean Park Blvd in Santa Monica provides FREE immunizations for children under 18 years old the
first Saturday of each month from 12-2:00. No appointment is necessary.
If you have ever signed an immunization waiver and subsequently DID have your child immunized for
Polio (4 doses), DTP (5 doses), MMR (2 doses), Hepatitis B (3 doses) or Varicella/Chickenpox (1 dose),
please provide the school with an updated record of immunizations immediately. You can (1) bring a
copy of the record to the office, (2) send a copy to school with your child ATTN: Nurse, (3) fax a copy to
the school (see fax #s below), or (4) email an attachment to nurse Rachel Bressler at
If your 3rd, 4th, or 5th grader gets the T-DaP booster (whooping cough, tetanus, & diphtheria for 7-13 year
olds now required for entry into 7th grade), be sure to bring documentation to the elementary school
nurse so that you will not need to receive unnecessary reminders during the 6th grade and so that your
7th grader will not be delayed in picking up his/her schedule prior to the start of 7th grade.
REMINDERS
There are several students in the district who are “immune deficient” due to a variety of health
conditions. Exposure to unimmunized children poses a risk to these students whose immune systems
are unable to protect them. The more district and community members who are immunized, the safer
the environment for these fragile students.
Thank you all for helping to keep the SMMUSD community healthy by immunizing your children and
keeping the nurses updated on their immunization status.

ALERTA DE VACUNACIÓN
El brote de sarampión que recientemente afectó al Condado de Orange demuestra la importancia de vacunar a los niños en nuestra comunidad. Recuerde que durante un brote de una enfermedad prevenible, como el sarampión, aquellos alumnos que no estén inmunizados (incluídos los que no hayan proporcionado la documentación necesaria) podrán ser excluidos de la escuela durante el período de incubación, que es de 21 días en el caso del sarampión
EN QUE PUEDO AYUDAR?
A todos aquellos estudiantes que no hayan sido vacunados contra el Sarampión, rogamos lo hagan lo antes posible. La Clínica "Westside Family" ubicada en 1711 Ocean Park Blvd en Santa Mónica ofrece vacunación gratis para niños menores de 18 años todos los primeros sábados del mes de 12-2:00. No es necesario hacer cita o sacar turno.
Si usted firmó el formulario de excepción, pero luego vacunó a sus hijos, por favor actualice lo antes posible, el registro escolar de inmunizaciones. Las vacunas que dicho registro incluye son: Poliomielitis (4 dosis ), DTP(Difteria, Tétanos y Tos ferina)- (5 dosis), MMR ó triple viral (sarampión, paperas y rubéola)-(2 dosis), Hepatitis B (3 dosis) y Varicela ó Chickenpox (1 dosis).
Puede actualizar los datos de la siguiente manera: (1) traiga una copia del registro de vacunación a la oficina, (2) envíe una copia a la escuela con su hijo Attn: Nurse (enfermera), (3) envíe un fax a la escuela (ver el número de fax abajo), ó (4) envíe un archivo adjunto a la enfermera Rachel Bressler a la siguiente dirección de email: [email protected]
Si su hijo cursa tercero, cuarto o quinto grado y recibió el refuerzo de la vacuna T -DAP (tos ferina , tétanos & difteria), que ahora es requerida para el ingreso a 7º grado, por favor muestre la documentación a la enfermera de la escuela, para evitar recibir recordatorios innecesarios durante sexto grado y para no demorar los tramites de ingreso a 7º grado. RECORDATORIOS Recuerde también que hay varios estudiantes en el distrito que son "inmunodeficientes" por cualquier tipo de enfermedad o condición. La exposición a los niños no inmunizados representa un riesgo para estos estudiantes cuyos sistema inmunológico no es capaz de protegerlos. Cuantos más miembros del distrito y de la comunidad estén inmunizados, más seguro es el entorno para estos frágiles estudiantes.

Position Descriptions:
President: Lead PTA toward goals set by its members. The president is the presiding officer and
the official representative of the association.
Executive Vice President: The Executive Vice President will serve as an aide to the president. If
the President cannot perform his/her duties, the Vice President will perform the duties of the
president.
Second Vice President: Director of Fundraising, including Annual Giving Campaign, Cartridge
Recycling and Rebate, Book Fairs, Jog-a-thon, Edison Family Night Dinners, Grant Writing and
Community Outreach, Corporate Outreach, Incentive Programs, Scrip, Raffles, Silent Auction,
Box Tops and Labels for Education, Gift Wrap Sale, School Spirit Clothing Sales.
Fourth Vice President: Director of Special Events, including Valentine’s Day Dance, Fall Festival, Friday nights at Edison, Edison Family Picnic, Volunteer Appreciation, Student Appreciation , Teacher and Staff Welcome Luncheon, Monthly Teacher Appreciation. Sixth Vice President: Director of Community Integration, including Hospitality Coordinator, State Exam Snacks, Welcome Coffee, Back to School Night, Kinder Welcome Picnic & Tour, School Tours, School Beautification Days, Community Clean-up, New-Family Friends, School SMARTS Program, Corazon de Vida. Also responsible for facilitating communication and fostering sense of community for the Spanish and English speaking families at Edison.
Financial Secretary: Records all incoming checks and makes bank deposits.
Parliamentarian: Helps the board follow the defined California State PTA bylaws and helps
create and maintain current set of bylaws and helps create the nomination committee.
Education Foundation Liaison: Serves as PTA-Edison representative to Education Foundation
and Vision for Student Success Program at district meetings and relays important information to
PTA, parents, and school leadership.
Treasurer: Works closely with President, EVP and Bookkeeper on preparing monthly financial
reports as required by the board and State PTA.

Descripciones de Posiciones:
Presidente: Maneja el grupo hacia los objetivos establecidos por sus miembros. El presidente es
el representante oficial de la asociación.
Vicepresidente Ejecutivo: El vicepresidente servirá como un asistente del presidente. Si el
presidente no puede desempeñar sus funciones, el vicepresidente ejercerá las funciones de
presidente.
Segundo Vicepresidente: Director de Recaudación de Fondos , incluyendo la Campaña Anual
de Donaciones , reciclaje de cartuchos y de reembolso , Ferias del Libro , Jog-a-thon , Dinners
Edison Noche Familiar , la escritura de Becas y Alcance a la Comunidad , Sector empresarial ,
programas de incentivos , Scrip , Rifas , Subasta Silenciosa , Box Tops y Etiquetas para la
Educación , Venta de papel de regalo, Venta de camisetas y otra ropa.
Cuarto Vicepresidente: Director de Eventos Especiales, incluyendo el Día de San Valentín
Danza, Festival de Otoño, Las Viernes en Edison, Edison Family Picnic, Aprecio de voluntarios,
Aprecio de estudiantes, Almuerzo de bienvenida para los maestros y facultad, Agradecimiento a
los Maestros cada mes.
Sexto Vicepresidente: Director de Integración de Comunidad, incluyendo Coordinador de la

reuniones de distrito y transmite información importante para la PTA, los padres , y el liderazgo
escolar.
Tesorero: Trabaja en colaboración con el Presidente, Vicepresidente Ejecutivo y Contador en la

PTA.
