DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLES ( UAVS)(An M.Tech Project)

UAVs are classified as control type of embedded systems. UAV’s flight path can be programmed andcontrolled by a Flight Controller mounted on the UAV. With relevant firmware, I/O devices and controlinput parameters, one can develop UAV applications in many areas.

Efforts were made by UAV Team of ECE Department; 7 students of M.Tech. (Embedded Systems ) to buildan R & D Laboratory for UAVs. In this process, the UAV Team developed 5 UAV applications in the areaof Agriculture. A brief introduction of these applications is presented below. Further, they developed a Mini-CNC Machine (a precision tool), to indigenously prepare some critical UAV components like Hub Plates,Motor Mounts etc.

Proper care has been taken in preparing excellent documentation to enable the successors to continue theabove work smoothly.

R & D Laboratory for UAVs

The UAV team designed and fabricated two test instruments, which help in developing UAV applications. These instruments form the basic infrastructure in our R & D laboratory (besides other supporting tools). Theconcepts/ideas implemented in building these test instruments are unique and it can be claimed that they are thefirst of their kind. They are essential in the design of sophisticated and modern UAVs.

1. The first Instrument can accurately measure the Thrust produced by the Motors used in UAVs. The resultof such measurements guides the designer of UAV in choosing the right set of motors for specificapplication.

2. The second instrument (UAV Test Jig) helps (a) in correcting any imbalance and (b) in resolving flightparameters.

(a) Correcting Imbalance in UAV: When a UAV (Quad copter / Hex copter / Octo copter) is placed inthe test jig, it displays the degree of imbalance in the UAV. This measurement helps in correcting theimbalance. This correction is very important for stable flying.

(b) Resolves the UAV Flight Parameters. The information obtained from the UAV test jig is used tooptimize the performance (improved stability) of UAV. As a result, the maneuverability of theUAV improves. Thus, the UAV test jig designed by UAV Team forms an important tool in tuningthe UAV for optimized performance.

A Mini-CNC Machine was designed by our UAV Team and added to the R & D L a b o r a t o r y ’ sinfrastructure. This machine can be used to prepare UAV components like HUB Plates, Motor Mounts etc.

These indigenously prepared components serve as Import Substitutes in building UAVs.

Using UAVs in Agriculture

1. Aerial Survey of Agricultural Land

Conducting Aerial Survey plays a significant role in Agriculture. With a GoPro camera ( Model :Hero 3+,Black edition) fitted on UAV, our UAV team developed an application to conduct Aerial Survey of agriculturalland. This idea is useful - for taking videos of the land periodically and comparing them with previous records. In this way, we can extract valuable information like, distribution of water to the plants in the agricultural field, pest infected zones in the land and crop yield. This is the cheapest method to conduct aerial survey of lands.

2. Solving the Problem of Animal and Bird Menace

Animal and Bird menace is a common problem to farmers. While animals like wild pigs spoil the crops, birds eat away most of the produce ( grains, sunflower seeds etc ).This menace can be minimized by scaringthem with huge sounds and/or by shining intense light into their eyes. UAV Team developed a solution tothis problem by:

(1) Mounting Air Horn and Powerful Light Source on the UAV(2) Fixing random flight paths within the farmer’s land using proper algorithms.(3) Making UAV hover in the sky randomly in the farmers’ land, to scare away birds and animals.

3. Battery Operated Pesticide Spraying Embedded System (Cycle Model )

Currently, farmers are spraying pesticides, using Petrol Engines, or manually with a hand pump. In bothcases, a pesticide tank (16 – 25 liters) is carried on their back. This approach is quite cumbersome andexpensive and does not ensure uniform spraying. Aiming at uniform spraying of pesticide, our UAV Teamdesigned and fabricated a battery operated pesticide spray unit with the following salient features:

Salient Features:

1. All the required spraying implements are perfectly mounted on a Bi-cycle.2. Auto-Spraying is possible on plants of different heights ( 3" height – 6’ )3. Special auto-spraying mechanism was added to this unit, to spray (in JET mode) on big fruit bearing

trees (20 feet height).4. A 20 meter pipe is also added to this unit. Using this pipe, farmer can spray pesticide on plants far

away from the cycle, not in the range of conventional spray nozzle.

4. Battery Operated Pesticide Spraying Embedded Unit (Trolley Model )

Currently, farmers are spraying pesticides, using Petrol engines, or manually with a hand pump. In both cases,a pesticide tank (16 – 25 liters) is carried on their back. This approach is quite cumbersome / expensive anddoes not ensure uniform spraying. Aiming at uniform spraying of pesticide, and also considering the distancebetween two successive plants, our UAV Team designed and fabricated a battery operated pesticide sprayingunit (Trolley Model) with the following salient features:

Page 17: 22 - CVR College of Engineeringcvr.ac.in/home4/newsletters/newsletter-Jan_June2015.pdf · Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts. -

17There are no menial jobs, only menial attitudes. - William J. Bennett,

Salient Features:1. All the required spraying implements are perfectly mounted on a trolley. Trolley helps the sprayer to

reach all areas of cultivable land for spraying.2. Auto-Spraying is possible on plants of different heights (3" height – 6’)3. Special auto-spraying mechanism is added to this unit, to spray (in JET mode) on big fruit bearing

trees (20 feet height).4. A 20 meter pipe is also added to this unit. Using this pipe, farmer can spray pesticide on plants far

away from the cycle, not in the range of conventional spray nozzle.

While the cycle model is used to spray pesticides from the banks of the farm land the Trolley model can betaken directly into the farm land for spraying.

INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO DOLPHIN FOOD INDUSTRIES

An industrial visit to “Dolphin Foods India Limited” Brahamanpally, Hyderabad was organized by the Department

of Mechanical Engineering on 18 March, 2015 for the students. Around 60 members including two staff membersvisited the industry. The students were given demonstrations on the processes of making candies.

The process is roughly divided into two units, namely, one to make a concentrate of the material and the other toform hard candies. The process of vacuum concentration unit is to evaporate material under reduced temperaturewith reduced pressure. The candy material taken out of the concentrator is then mixed with various additives, spicesor unique flavors according to the desire of the candy makers. The mixing process requires sufficient kneading toobtain excellent products. After sufficient kneading is carried out, the candy is drawn out in the shape of a rope of

Page 29: 22 - CVR College of Engineeringcvr.ac.in/home4/newsletters/newsletter-Jan_June2015.pdf · Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts. -

29

determined measure by the batch roller (set with sizing roller). Thedrawn candy is then put into the hard candy forming unit, wherecandies are made (formed). Steam jacketed stainless steel cookingwith motorized chamber stirring is used. The quality of the productmade with this system is excellent, moderate and there is no manualhandling of cooked producst. There is no pollution in the cookingarea.

Visit to Dolphin Food Industries

Steam is generated in the boiler with help of fuel and this boiler is kept away from the cooking or processing area tomaintain the cleanliness. Steam is supplied to the cooker through the pipeline. While operating the cooker, sufficientwater is put in cooking chamber, sugar is added, liquid glucose is added, and the stirrer is switched on. (Alternatelysugar, liquid glucose syrup can be pumped in from the pre-dissolved tank).

When the sugar is dissolved, other ingredients are put into the cooking chamber step by step. When the desiredtemperature is achieved, vacuum is applied and valve is opened. It sucks cooking mass into lower pan and thecooking chamber’s valve is closed. Here vacuum is applied further for 4-5 minutes to remove the moisture of mass. This improves the quality and clarity of sweets. In the next step the vacuum is released and thick syrup of lower panis poured on a cooling plate by tilting the pan. Here color, flavors and other things are added to the batch. Aftercooling, the mass is put in the batch former which produces a thick conical sugar rope. This rope is further passedthrough the three stage rope sizer to give the universal size and then to the forming machine. Here the rope is cut intorequired size and shape (According to candy design) and discharged on three way cooling. On the Three WayCooling Conveyor Sugar Candies are cooled down and carried away .The formed candies are finally cooled downto normal temperature and charged to the packing machine. Now the Candies are ready for wrapping (or formarketing if sold in loose condition).

The process does not have any waste as it operates on environment friendly refrigerant i.e., CFC free, ozone friendlymachine. The waste heat produced is utilized usefully and in turn avoids the need for switching to a HT connectionand also provides a DG running especially for the chilling purpose (the load on EB power and DG is reduced to agreat extent). The whole process is carried out in the absorption chiller which is eco friendly. The visit proved to be

very useful and was highly appreciated by the students.

The Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC), established in the year 1971, is a major industrial unit of the Departmentof Atomic Energy, Government of India. It is responsible for the supply of nuclear fuel bundles and reactor corecomponents for all the nuclear power reactors operating in India.

India is pursuing an indigenous three stage Nuclear Power Programme involving closed fuel cycles of PressurizedHeavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) and Liquid Metal Cooled Fast Breeder Reactors (LMFBRs) for judicious utilizationof the relatively limited reserves of uranium and vast resources of thorium. PHWRs form the first stage of the PowerProgramme which uses zircaloy as clad & natural uranium dioxide as fuel.

Nuclear power is clean, safe, and economical and develops more power with limited amount of fuel. The powerproduced by the fission of 1gram of U235 isotope is equivalent to the power produced by 2.5 tons of coal.So there is a greater inclination towards using nuclear power as an alternative fuel.

• The first plant visited was Natural Uranium Oxide Fuel Plant where refining of the raw material and theuranium oxide pellets are prepared.

Uranium Refining and Conversion

The raw material for the production of PHWR fuel in NFC is Magnesium Di-Uranate (MDU) popularly known as‘Yellow Cake’. The MDU concentrate is obtained from the uranium mine and milled at Jaduguda, Jharkhand, operated by Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UICL). The impure MDU is subjected to nitric acid dissolutionfollowed by solvent extraction and precipitation with ammonia to get Ammonium Di-Uranate (ADU). By furthersteps of controlled calcinations and reduction, sinterable uranium dioxide powder is formed which is then compactedin the form of cylindrical pellets in hydraulic presses, sintered at high temperature to get a high density and thenmoved to centreless grinding machines where their diameters are controlled and finally uranium dioxide pellets areproduced.

• The second plant visited was Ceramic Fuel Fabrication Plant where the uranium oxide pellets are stackedtogether to form fuel bundles which are used in nuclear reactors.

Fuel Fabrication

For PHWR Fuel, the cylindrical UO2 pellets are stacked and encapsulated in thin walled tubes of zirconium alloywith graphite lining, both ends of which are sealed by resistance welding using zircaloy end plugs. A number of suchfuel pins are assembled to form a fuel bundle that can be conveniently loaded into the reactor. A robot is used forassembling these fuel bundles. The fuel bundles for PHWR 220 Mwe and PHWR 540 Mwe consist of 19 and 37fuel pins respectively.

• The third plant visited was Seamless Stainless Steel Tube Plant.

This plant manufactures seamless stainless steel tubes which are used for both nuclear and non nuclear applications. The various machining operations like Pilgering, Tube drawing, Tube Bending and Extrusion Process were seen.

Finally this stainless steel tube’s surface is treated using glass beads shot peening for stress corrosion and crackingresistance. Students were given a demonstration of various non destructive testing methods like Eddy Current Testand Ultrasonic Testing.

An interesting audio visual clip was shown to the students giving a brief overview of the three stage nuclear powerprogramme and in particular about NFC.
