Sometimes road and boundary fences are missing or wrong

Often only one person is available to do the recording

OHS issues when measuring across roads

Return trips often necessary – missed or erroneous measurements,so its all time consuming

If surveyors are called in the infrastructure is usually buried by thetime they get there

So - can GPS help here as well ??So - can GPS help here as well ??

What if the works foreman could GPS the fitting locations as they arelaid,

AND record the pipe attributes all at the same time?

We set out to see what could be done, using the new GPS infrastructurebeing deployed by DSE – VICpos and MELBpos,

And

can we do it AND still achieve our prescribed accuracy standards?

VICposVICpos

VICpos is the integration of the post-processing service currentlyavailable (GPSNet) and the new real-time service founded onVictoria’s GPS Continually Operating Reference Station (CORS)network, (12 GPSNet base stations)

VICpos is designedto provide sub-meterpositioning byeither postprocessing or inreal time, via amobile phonelink

- Mobile Phone Coverage

- GPRS Coverage

- Initialisation times ( 25sec – 45 sec)

- Accuracies (+/- 2cm)

- Repeatability

Introduction of GPS technology into other Divisions of BW.

Identify appropriate GPS for data acquisition.

Introduction of GPS technology into other Divisions of BW.

We have begun to introduce GPS within other areas of BW outside of ourLand Information Unit.

A Trimble GeoXT has been purchased for:

- Water Supply

(Location & Navigation to Rural Assets, Bores, Works Requirements….)

- Customer Operations (Reserves)

(Mapping & Navigation to nesting Boxes at Bannockburn STP,

recycled effluent property dams…..)

All data is post processed to the Geelong GPSNet Base Station. Both of thesedepartments locate assets in the Rural areas, thus the accuracy of sub-meteris all that is required.

Identify appropriate GPS for data acquisition

We are currently assessing the most appropriate way to locate as constructedassets by Systems Maintenance within the Urban Areas.

The GeoXT Sub meter GPS unit was tested by our Maintenance Crew on two

as constructed jobs

- Queenscliff Rd, Newcombe

- Settlement Rd, Belmont

The Systems Maintenance Crew were able to be trained easily in the use ofthe Sub Meter GPS Unit.

However, the accuracy of the data, post processed, was +/- 0.5m. This isoutside our required GIS accuracy for the Urban Areas.

The ProXH is currently being tested for as constructed capture within theUrban Areas.

Our first field test suggests that this may be the best method of locating assetsto an accuracy of < 0.2m without having to invest +/- $60000.

Software used by the ProXH is TerraSync.

Able to give accuracy estimates whilst measuring.

A minimum of two minutes continuous clear sky is required to achieveaccuracies of <0.2m.

Develop a computer based design / as construct / GIS capture process.

Our Asset Development engineers design water main replacements /extensions in Microstation format (A1).

We are developing an A4 proforma

to enable enlargements of critical

node areas from the design plan.

These diagrams will be used by the

Systems Maintenance crew for

identifying and recording node numbers

and radiations that may be measured.

A Data Dictionary has been developed based on the Developer Works Table.

This will allow consistency of data collection and presentation to our GIS group.

Within the GPS data dictionary, each feature has associated attributes.

- Node Number

- Pipe Diameter

- Pipe Material

- Date Laid

- Depth

These are key requirements for the

assets to be correctly defined within

Profis.

The benefits of this data process are:

 - Resolves OHS issues of measurements across roads.

 - Ensure consistent accuracy of capture assuming correct

field techniques are adopted.

 - Elimination of field staff having to measure radiations to

occupation.

 - Eliminates potential transcription errors

 - Accelerates the capture process within the GIS (Profis)
