The year is now well underway and students should be establishing their routines for study and homework. Routines need to be flexible enough to accommodate the events that normally occur such as family birthdays. The routines should prioritise homework, but also allow for working on assignments steadily over time and for advanced revision for assessment at the end of term. We recommend that OP/ATAR students would need to study a total of 15 hours per week at this time. They might need more when exam time approaches. Some students find it difficult to settle down to study in the home environment. They should consider taking advantage of the College library. The year is now well underway and students should be establishing their routines for study and homework. McGarry Bursaries Following the Mass, we presented the McGarry Bursaries. A bequest by the late Miss Joan McGarry has established perpetual bursaries to be presented each year to St Patrick’s College students. The trust is established in honour of Miss McGarry’s parents, the late Fred and Rose McGarry and her brother, the late Jim McGarry. As per the guidelines of the bequest, bursaries were awarded in the areas of Academic Achievement, Sporting and Cultural Excellence and Social Justice. As well, in recognition of Joan McGarry’s lifelong dedication to her profession of nursing, the student with the highest OP entering Nursing also receives a bursary. The intention of the bequest is that students receive the bursary once properly enrolled in a tertiary course after Year 12, with study to commence in the year of the bequest. These bursaries are not about money – although the money is substantial – the bursaries are about a gift to the future, a belief in young people, a hope to make things better for young people. An extraordinary gift to our whole community.

Every year when we celebrate these bursaries, it is important that we reflect on the fact that we have a debt of gratitude and a responsibility to all those who have gone before us at St Patrick’s. There is a proud tradition of spreading and sharing the good news at this college and we become part of that tradition and we continue to create that tradition this year.

It was wonderful to see the McGarry Bursary recipients so excited as they were all about to embark on studies for their various careers. This year saw $22,000 available to be distributed to successful students. The amount available for bursaries is advised to the College by Perpetual Trustees, who are the trustees of Joan McGarry’s estate. Bursaries are awarded according to a formula devised by the College Board in 2009 to meet the available money and number of eligible recipients each year.

The Adrian Smith Memorial Bursary was also awarded at the Opening and Investiture Mass. This award is for a graduating student selected by the Principal and Staff of St Patrick’s College, who best reflects the nature and values of Adrian Smith in his time as a student and staff member of the College. Adrian was a person who had great integrity, a friendly nature and a great passion for Information Technology, Aerospace and Business. The successful awardee will be continuing with their education at the tertiary level and the bursary is both an acknowledgement of their involvement at the College and to assist with future studies. Samuel Andersen (Year 12 in 2018) was awarded the $200 bursary at the Mass. Samuel is about to begin studies in Bachelor of Arts / Animation at QUT. Adrian’s mother Sharon Smith was in attendance to present this bursary to Samuel.

The Christian Brothers Vocational Education and Training Encouragement Bursary provides a cash prize of $250 which is intended to assist the student with the pursuit of their vocational goals. The bursary is for a student in Year 12 who has been identified by the College as striving for excellence in their vocational studies. The bursary winner for 2019 was Evan Keating. The bursary was presented by Mr Simon Korneliussen, our VET Coordinator. The Class of 1974 Bursary is sponsored by members of the Class of 1974, who have collectively made an outstanding contribution to the Mackay community and beyond – in the clergy, politics, business, law, trades and other fields. Through their generosity, a bursary which provides a rebate from the student’s college fees, has been made available to a current St Patrick’s College Year 12 student. This student will have demonstrated great dedication and commitment throughout Year 11 in overcoming adversity, or disability or circumstances to achieve academic success. The recipient of the Class of 1974 Bursary was Josh Crawley. Mr Damian Carroll, who was a member of this class, presented the Bursary to Josh on behalf of the class of 1974. The Macrossan & Amiet Charitable Foundation The bursary is presented to a Year 11 student who is considered to be of merit, shows sufficient promise and who is consider worthy of the bursary, especially taking into account that the student shows sufficient promise and whose education will benefit from the bursary. Meet and Greet and Success in Senior Schooling Seminar At the Success in Senior Schooling evening on Tuesday 19 February, I reminded students of the importance of taking full responsibility of their learning and education. I highlighted the fact that at the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, the best college for them to attend, but none of this will matter unless they are all ready to fulfil their responsibilities. I urged them to continue with a fresh start; to show up to college on time; pay attention to their teachers; listen to their parents, grandparents and other adults; and put in the hard work it takes to succeed. Every single one of our students have something that they are good at. Every single one has something to offer and they have a responsibility to themselves to discover what that is. There is no excuse in not trying – even if you fail. Students should use their Christian values as their core strength to guide them. So students it’s up to you. My wish for you all is to have a wonderful senior experience - I know you can do it. We are here to support you. QCAA Monitoring Day Next Monday 25 February, some staff at St Patrick’s are involved in QCAA monitoring of standards in the work Year 12 students did in Year 11. Please note - there will be normal classes on this day for all students.

Catholic School Identity survey In 2015, the St Patrick’s College community undertook a survey to provide a snap shot of the Catholic Identity of the College. The responses to the survey provided valuable feedback to the College about the faith background of the community members, expectations around the identity of the College and the perceptions about the religious life of the College. This year, we will be undertaking the second Catholic Identity survey to be completed by the staff, students and parents of the College. I understand that we are all busy and the survey does take time to complete, but I would ask all parents to take the time to provide responses to the survey. By completing the survey you can assist the College to understand how the community sees the way that the Catholic identity of the College is lived and shaped, how the community would like the Catholic identity to look and feel, and provide some ideas for improvement in the future. The survey will open Monday 4 March and close 26 April. Prize draw for families - Once parents have participated in the survey and returned to the College office receipt of completion of survey, their entry will go into a draw for an Apple iPhone X. The QCS Test Students throughout Queensland will sit for the QCS test on Tuesday 3 and Wednesday 4 September 2019. The QCS test serves two purposes. It is used in the calculation of students’ OPs – the group result for each subject being the most significant. As well as that, students who sit for the QCS test receive a grade A to E for the result of the test. This result appears on their Senior Certificate from the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority. Please be aware that some employers ask to see a student’s result on the QCS test regardless of whether they are OP or not. Last week, a letter was sent out whereby the parents of students who are doing a non-OP course were asked to indicate whether their son or daughter wishes to sit the QCS test. The test is not compulsory for non-OP students, but they are welcome to sit it should they wish. Parents need to be aware that if a student is otherwise eligible for an OP, not sitting for the test means they cannot be awarded an OP. Also, if a non-OP student changes their career options and wishes to enter university after school, the QCS test can allow them to apply to QTAC and enter university using the results in their non-OP subjects, plus their QCS test result. If a student elects to not sit the QCS test they will be placed in a Prepare for Work group. This means they MUST attend all activities during Thursday’s set lesson and special training days in the Prepare for Work group – they cannot be absent on these days. Please take this decision seriously. If you require any more information, please do not hesitate to contact the College. Special Provision The QCAA also makes allowance, in the interests of justice and equity, for students with impairments to receive special provisions. Schools approve special provision for school-based assessment. Special provision for the QCS Test however, is approved by the QCAA. Two types of special provision are available before the QCS Test: special arrangements and exemption. Special arrangements are practical adjustments to the test conditions, e.g. rest breaks, use of word-processing software, extra time etc. Exemption allows a student to be absent from the test and retain their eligibility for an OP. The application process can be through the school or to the QCAA directly. The former is the usual route as the school submits an application on behalf of the student. Alternatively, a student may submit an application directly if they have a reason for not submitting their application through their school. Application categories include those diagnosed with ADD, ADHD, ASD, diabetes, English as an additional language, hearing impairment, illegible handwriting, various illnesses, neurological impairments and disorders, physical injuries and impairments, specific learning disorders, vision impairment etc. For students who have long-term impairments, applications close on 21 May 2019.

Parent Lounge information This week, all parents should have received an email containing your username and password for Parent Lounge. Many of our parents may already be familiar with Parent Lounge due to its use in other Catholic schools. Important documents regarding excursions, parent teacher interviews and all student report cards will now be uploaded onto Parent Lounge and will no longer be posted home.

If you have not received your email would you please contact the College office. Pastoral Care Coordinators There are three Pastoral Care Coordinators at St Patrick’s. Each coordinator is assigned a group of students determined by their surname. The Pastoral Care Coordinators and their assigned students are as follows:

Surnames A - F Mr Mark Casey [email protected] Surnames G - N Ms Kerry Braby [email protected] Surnames O – Z Mrs Erika Brauer [email protected]

Our pastoral care team will be responsible for monitoring student academic results, absenteeism and providing ongoing support and guidance to students when it is required. If your child is having difficulty making friends, or experiencing problems coping with increased academic stress or they quite simply aren’t enjoying the transition to St Pat’s, please contact the relevant coordinator so that extra support can be provided. All St Patrick’s students have been assigned a classroom teacher who will also fulfil the role of a Mentor teacher. This teacher provides consistent support and guidance with the goal of boosting academic performance and assisting students

to become well-rounded individuals. If our students can develop a positive relationship with their mentor teacher, they will have a much better chance of being a successful student at St Pat’s. Student Diary All students have been issued with a 2019 student diary. This diary will be viewed on a regular basis by teachers, year coordinators and parents. It should be accessible at all times and is an excellent resource containing important information including staff contact details, prayers, college procedures, assessment policies, college rules, community expectations, referencing and bibliography techniques and the list goes on. I encourage all parents to refer to the student diary if unsure about any of our college policies and procedures. Alternatively, the College website can also be accessed to refer to these documents. Please note: Adjustments to the 2019 diary due to new telephone systems and email addresses

However, that did not stop the staff and students from having a fun and enjoyable day. The competition was fierce with the carnival lead changing several times throughout the day. When the water had settled, it was Rice, the Year 11 boys who ended up victors with Chisholm, the Year 12 girls coming second, closely followed by McAuley, the Year 11 girls and then Colin, Year 12 boys finishing a respectable fourth. STEM Initiative St Patrick’s College is embarking on a new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) initiative. This new initiative involves the use of Human Powered Vehicles (HPVs) at selected events around Queensland. This year, the College will be setting up the College’s HPV team and racing in the BHP Whitsunday STEM Challenge 18 hour endurance race on 8 and 9 June, at the Palmyra Dragway in Mackay. The BHP Whitsunday STEM Challenge is a new and exciting event for the region with St Patrick’s College joining many other Mackay schools for the competition. The event and HPV program has the support of BHP, Mackay Regional Council, Central Queensland University (CQU) and a number of companies within the region and is part of the Queensland HPV Super Series. HPVs are an exciting way to introduce students to a variety of STEM concepts. Concepts introduced are in the fields of sports science, technology, engineering, and art. Sports science introduces students to how to train, how their bodies work with sport and the sorts of nutrition needed to compete in a race. Technology and Engineering are introduced through modifications to help with the human design factors regarding competing in a HPV, engineering changes to increase speed or to track how each competitor is working through the race. Art is introduced through filming the event, designing the exterior of the HPV or shirts they may wear. There are other aspects such as leadership skills, teamwork, management and social emotional skills increased through participation in the program. CQU as a major supporter of the event offers a variety of extracurricular experiences for students. Students may be required to attend CQU on various occasions to enhance their knowledge in various STEM fields. These may include visits to their sport science centre to find their upper stress levels for sport, this is the same way elite athletes in Mackay are trained. The Engineering department at St Patrick’s College will be working with teams to enhance their vehicles and there will be times when students will be involved in this process. Training for the event will be Monday and Wednesday after school at St Patrick’s College and will either be in the vehicle to improve driving ability, fitness training or on spin cycles to increase endurance and fitness. There will be training sessions held at the Palmyra Dragway on Sunday’s once a month at the start and closer to the race, may increase to fortnightly, however this may change depending on student needs.
