The Queen Ann Revival house at 22 Forest Street was built by T.V. Bingay the third of that name, in 1903.
Bingay was a t the time, manager of the Exchange Bank in Yarmouth, opened in 1877 in a new building at the corner of Main and Jenkins
Street in Yarmouth. In 1903, the year the house was built, the Exchange Bank was taken over by the Bank of Montreal. Bingay
stayed on as manager of that branch until his retirement in 1921 at the age of 65. The Bingay family had long been prominent in
Yarmouth, as early as January 1870 the firm of T.V.B. Bingay and Sons, Barristers entered into their law partnership. James and
George Bingay did most of the legal work in Yarmouth in the final third of the nineteenth century. After T.V. Bingay the third left
Yarmouth, the house was occupied by successive managers of the Bank of Montreal.
Perhaps nowhere did North America’s “golden age of sail” glitter more brightly than in Yarmouth. This Southwestern Seaport on the Bay of Fundy was once the richest shipping port per capita in the
North Atlantic during the glory days of sail in the late 19th century.
The harbourfront bustled with 20 wharves, a yacht club and some 300 large vessels owned or captained by Yarmouthians. The Nova Scotia
flag was flown in ports around the world.
Today, evidence of Yarmouth’s 19th century prosperity can be seen in the large elaborate homes built by sea captains, merchants and ship
owners.
Yarmouth still derives much of it’s prosperity from the sea. It is the southern Gateway to Nova Scotia.

Yarmouth Tartan and Poem
by Saul Gillis 1963
Where lupins trail the winding roads and hills are covered with trees,
Their iron men in wooden ships did roam the seven seas.
Where fishing fleets are sailing by the Lighthouse and the Bar,
To spread the bait on silvery nets in waters near and far.
Where lakes do kiss the wooded shores and deer the forest roam,
There is Yarmouth Nova Scotia,The place I call my home.
