LEHIGH HEAD COACH TOM GILMORETom Gilmore was named the 29th head football coach in Lehigh history on January 8. An intense and passionate leader with more than 30 years of coaching experience at high-end academic institutions, Gilmore returns to Lehigh as head coach after four successful seasons as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach from 2000-03. Gilmore spent 14 seasons as head coach at Holy Cross, where he was a two-time Patriot League Coach of the Year and led the Crusaders to a Patriot League Championship and FCS Playoff appearance in 2009. The 1986 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania spent the 2018 season on the coaching staff at Wake Forest.(Coach Gilmore’s complete bio can be found on page 15) SACRED HEART HEAD COACH MARK NOFRIMark Nofri is in his 26th season associated with Sacred Heart football and his eighth as the Pioneers’ head coach. He entered the 2019 season with a 44-36 record and has led Sacred Heart to three NEC titles, including a share of the league title last season. Nofri is also a three-time NEC Coach of the Year, having won the award following all three of SHU’s NEC championship seasons (2013, 2014 and 2018). He came to Sacred Heart in 1994 and spent most of his pre-head coaching tenure coaching linebackers. A 1993 gradu-ate of Keene State, Nofri began his coaching career at Hamilton College. THE SERIESThis will be the fi rst-ever meeting between Lehigh and Sacred Heart in football. The Mountain Hawks already faced NEC member Saint Francis in their season opener and also played Merrimack, who will compete in the NEC once its transition from Division II to Division I is complete. Lehigh will be the third Patriot League foe for Sacred Heart in 2019. The Pioneers posted wins over Bucknell and Lafayette in September.

SCOUTING SACRED HEARTWinners of three straight games, Sacred Heart brings a 6-4 overall record and 4-2 NEC mark into its fi nal home game. The Pioneers scored 41 second half points to erase a 7-0 halftime defi cit in a win over Wagner last week. Sacred Heart’s current streak also includes an overtime win at Saint Francis and a victory at Bryant. The Pioneers also own September wins over Patriot League members Bucknell and Lafayette. Offensively, quar-terback Logan Marchi has thrown for 2,147 yards and 19 touchdowns in nine games, and his backup Marquez McCray was named NEC Rookie of the Week after subbing for Mar-chi against Wagner. Running back Julius Chestnut has already eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark this season with 1,224 yards and eight touchdowns. Tyrese Chambers is the top receiver with 40 catches for 680 and seven touchdowns. Linebacker Chris Outterbridge is the top tackler with 64 stops. The Pioneers won NEC titles in 2013 and 2014 and shared the league championship last year but missed out on the FCS playoffs.

GAME 10: LEHIGH AT SACRED HEART • PAGE 3FOUR CAPTAINS NAMEDNear the end of preseason camp, coach Tim Gilmore named four captains for the 2019 season. Senior offensive lineman Nick Rosen (Ellicott City, Md.), senior defensive back Riley O’Neil (Tewksbury, N.J.), fi fth-year defensive back Sam McCloskey (Altoona, Pa.) and fi fth-year defensive lineman Ju-wan Morrow (New Castle, Del.) will lead this year’s squad. McCloskey will serve as a captain for the third consecutive season.

WELCOME BACKLehigh returns two of the four players named to last season’s All-Patriot League teams. Junior wide receiver Jorge Portor-real was a fi rst team all-league honoree in 2018 after leading the league in receiving yards per game. Fifth-year safety Sam McCloskey earned second team All-Patriot League laurels.

FROM COAST TO COASTThe Lehigh coaching staff prides itself in bringing in student-athletes from across the nation. This season, 17 states (plus Canada) are represented on the Mountain Hawks roster, including California, Con-necticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Ken-tucky, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ontario, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Texas. The state with the most repre-sentation is New Jersey, as 18 Mountain Hawks hail from the Garden State.

700 CLUBLehigh’s victory over Georgetown marked the 700th win in program history. The Brown and White are tied for seventh among FCS programs in all-time victories. Below is a look at Lehigh’s previous mile-stone wins as well as the top 10 winningest FCS programs.

SUCCESS BEFORE THE RIVALRYLehigh will close out the regular season next Saturday when the Mountain Hawks host Lafayette in the 155th meeting of college football’s most-played rivalry. The Mountain Hawks have experienced success in the game prior to Lafayette, as Lehigh has won 13 of its last 16 games prior to The Rivalry. The only blemishes during that time were losses to Colgate in 2012, 2015 and 2018.

STEPPING OUT OF LEAGUE PLAYIn terms of regular season action, playing non-league opponents in November has become a rarity for the Lehigh football program. Saturday’s game will mark the fi rst time Lehigh will face a non-league opponent the week before its Rivalry game with Lafayette since 1997, when the Mountain Hawks lost 24-19 to Delaware at Goodman Stadium. The Nov. 16 date vs. Sacred Heart will mark the latest non-league regular season game for Lehigh since the start of Patriot League Football in 1986, surpassing the Nov. 15, 1997 game between Lehigh and Delaware. The Moun-tain Hawks will be playing their 10th non-league regular season game in November since 1986. Lehigh will be looking for its fi rst win in the Patriot League era when facing a non-league opponent in the game before facing Lafayette.

FEELS LIKE THE FIRST TIMESaturday’s game marks the fi rst-ever meet-ing between Lehigh and Sacred Heart. The Mountain Hawks have enjoyed success in games against fi rst time opponents. Over the last 25 years, Lehigh is 12-2 against fi rst time opponents, including a 10-3 win over Merrimack on Sept. 28. The lone two losses to fi rst time opponents over the last 25 years were at the hands of Wagner (2017) and North Dakota State (2011 FCS quarterfi nals). The Mountain Hawks’ last road win against a fi rst time opponent was a 14-7 win at Northern Iowa in the opening round of the 2010 FCS playoffs. Lehigh has won 15 straight home games against new opponents, dating back to 1975. The Mountain Hawks are 5-2 on the road against fi rst-time opponents since 1998 with wins at St. Mary’s, Richmond, Western Illinois, Liberty and UNI.

LEHIGH AT BUCKNELL

LEWISBURG, Pa. (11/9/19) - Lehigh’s offense was never able to get going as the Mountain Hawks suffered their second straight defeat, 20-10 at Bucknell on a cold Saturday at Christy Mathew-son-Memorial Stadium. Mountain Hawk linebackers Pete Haffner and Keith Woetzel combined for 27 tackles and Lehigh’s fi rst three sacks since the Fordham game, but the Bucknell defense held Lehigh to a sea-son-low 209 yards and sacked Mountain Hawk quarterbacks seven times. The Bison built leads of 10-0 and 20-3 before Lehigh put the ball in the end zone for its only touchdown of the day as sophomore Alec Beesmer connected with senior Devon Bibbens on a two-yard touchdown pass. Bibbens established a new career high with 11 receptions, going for 92 yards and the score. Junior Jorge Portorreal added 37 yards on six catches.

Monaco fi nished 16-of-23 for 117 yards and an interception, while Beesmer fi n-ished 8-of-15 for 84 yards and the score. Shoup was 2-of-4 for 14 yards. Bitikofer fi nished 23-of-39 for 190 yards with two touchdowns and two inter-ceptions. McGuire and Connor Holmes each had six catches to lead the Bison. Haffner fi nished with a career-high 16 tackles and added two sacks and three tackles for loss. Woetzel had 11 tackles and a sack late in the fi rst half.

Riley O’Neil made his fi rst interception of the season in the second quarter, which led to a 33-yard Austin Henning fi eld goal. Marquis Wilson also had an interception on the fi nal play of the fi rst half.

GAME 10: LEHIGH AT SACRED HEART • PAGE 4DEVON DELIVERSAfter leaving the Colgate game early due to injury, senior wide receiver Devon Bibbens returned to the lineup with one of the best all-around games of his career. Bibbens established a new career high with 10 receptions and caught a pair of touchdowns, including the game-winner in overtime. He showed off his well-roundedness as a receiver, but delivering a key block on the perimeter that helped spring Zaythan Hill on his 94-yard touchdown. Bibbens was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts. Bibbens has been terrifi c over the last six games he fi nished. Starting with a 101-yard, two touchdown effort at UC Davis, Bibbens is averaging eight receptions for 100 yards and a touchdown over those fi ve games. He had six catches for 91 yards against Georgetown, includ-ing a 48-yard catch-and-run on the game’s fi nal drive that set up Austin Henning’s game-winning fi eld goal. Bibbens had his third 100-yard receiving game of the season and fi fth of his career versus Holy Cross and set a new career high with 11 receptions at Bucknell.

WOETZEL LEADS THE WAYLinebacker Keith Woetzel has led the Mountain Hawks in tackles in each of the last two seasons and is enjoying a tremendous senior season. Woetzel has set a new career high with 92 tackles this season and leads the FCS averaging 7.4 solo tackles per game. He also ranks sixth in sacks per game and 13th in total tackles per game. Woet-zel recorded a career-high 16 tackles at UC Davis. For the season, Woetzel has 12.5 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks and an interception. He was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week following a 13-tackle, 2.5-sack effort at Colgate and won the award again, while adding STATS FCS National Player of the Week honors to his resume after making 15 tackles with four sacks and an interception at Fordham. Last week, Woetzel was added to the watch list for the Buck Buchanan Award, given to the top defensive player in the FCS.

HAFFNER HEATING UPSenior Keith Woetzel has received national acclaim but his inside linebacker partner, Pete Haffner, has come on as of late. Haffner ranks second on the team with 81 tackles and has added 8.5 tackles for loss and four sacks. He picked off two passes against Holy Cross to go along with seven tackles. They were the fi rst two interceptions of his career, as Haffner became the fi rst Lehigh player with two interceptions in one game since Quentin Jones had two against Holy Cross in 2015. It was also the fi rst two-interception game for a Patriot League player this season, which won Haffner the league’s Defensive Player of the Week award. Haffner established a new career high with 16 tackles against Bucknell and was credited with two tackles and three tackles for loss.

THE SACK STORYWhile Lehigh’s defense had struggled getting to the quarterback over the past two-plus seasons, the Mountain Hawks’ sack attack came to life in a mid-season three-game stretch. The Mountain Hawks registered six sacks against both Merrimack and Ford-ham and picked up seven at Colgate, the most for the Mountain Hawks in a single game since Lehigh racked up 10 in a win at Bucknell in 2011. Junior Erik Slater had three sacks against Mer-rimack and added a fourth at Colgate, while senior Keith Woet-zel led the charge at Colgate with 2.5 sacks and added four at Fordham, matching the second-highest single game sack total in school history. Lehigh registered just 10 sacks in 2017 and 15 last year. After being held without a sack against both Georgetown and Holy Cross, Lehigh had three sacks at Bucknell.

TYLER’S TIMESenior quarterback Tyler Monaco has rebounded from a rough outing against Merrimack with four stong performances in Patriot League action. Monaco had completed just 45.1 percent of his passes in non-league games with two touchdowns and four interceptions, but in fi ve league games has completed 63 percent of his passes with four touchdowns and three interceptions. The Davie, Fla., native has thrown for 200 or more yards in six of his nine starts this season. Monaco established new career highs with 26 completions and 282 passing yards against Fordham.

HILL AND HOPE HELPING OFFENSESince the start of Patriot League play, Lehigh’s offense has received a boost from freshman running backs Zaythan Hill and Nate Hope. Hope had 112 yards from scrimmage at Colgate, including a touchdown catch, and scored his fi rst two career rushing touchdowns against Georgetown. Hill has scored a touch-down in the last four games he played in, scoring the go-ahead touchdown from nine-yards out at Colgate and setting a Patriot League record with a 94-yard touchdown run at Fordham. His run was the second-longest from scrimmage in school history and the fi rst 90-plus yard run for Lehigh in 21 years. Both players have won Patriot League Rookie of the Week awards, Hope following the Colgate game and Hill following Fordham.

NO RUNNINGA vastly improved rush defense has been an important component for Lehigh in the 2019 season. The Mountain Hawks gave up more than 200 yards per game on the ground in six straight seasons from 2013-18, but this year, Lehigh leads the Patriot League allowing just 127.2 yards per game. The Mountain Hawks have kept fi ve of their fi rst nine opponents to under 100 yards on the ground, and allowed minus-14 rushing yards in a two-game stretch against Merrimack (minus-25) and Colgate (nine). Lehigh allowed fewer than 50 rushing yards in those back-to-back games after previously not keeping an opponent under 50 yards since 2011, when Georgetown mustered 48.

WORKING OVERTIMEThe Mountain Hawks have played 13 overtime games since over-time rules were established prior to the 1995 season. Lehigh is 8-5 in overtime games, with its most recent overtime game being its Oct. 19 win at Fordham.

GAME 10: LEHIGH AT SACRED HEART • PAGE 5THROWN FOR A LOSSThe Mountain Hawks have been busy in opposing backfi elds this season. Lehigh is averaging just under seven tackles for loss per game this season, including 11 at UC Davis and 10 against Merrimack. The Mountain Hawks have now had fi ve games with 10-or-more tackles for loss since the start of the 2018 season. In the previous fi ve seasons, Lehigh had just two games with 10 or more tackles for loss. Senior Keith Woetzel leads Lehigh with 12.5 tackles for loss, while junior Erik Slater has 11. Lehigh had 13 tackles for loss at Georgetown last year, its most since the start of the 2001 season.

SNYDER STEPS UPSophomore tight end Alex Snyder has emerged as a weapon for Lehigh offensively. He has 19 receptions for 292 yards through eight games, and recently enjoyed a four-catch, 128-yard effort at Fordham. Snyder became the fi rst Lehigh tight end to gain 100 re-ceiving yards in a game since Adam Bergen had seven catches for 101 yards and two touchdowns at Holy Cross on Oct. 9, 2004. The Cumming, Ga., native appeared in all 11 games as a freshman and looks to re-establish the role of the tight end in Lehigh’s offense. In the 2017 and 2018 seasons combined, Lehigh tight ends had just 10 receptions, including two by Snyder last year.

JUST FOR KICKSWith the graduation of all-league performer Ed Mish, Lehigh will rely on senior Austin Henning and freshman Dylan Van Dusen in the kicking game. Henning has come on strong in his fi rst season as Lehigh’s starting placekicker, converting all 16 of his extra point attempts and 9-of-13 fi eld goals. Henning kicked a 45-yard fi eld goal at Fordham, the longest fi eld goal made by the Mountain Hawks since 2007, and scored a career-high nine points against Georgetown, including the game-winning 27-yard fi eld goal as time expired. The Fairview, Texas native was named Patriot League Special Teams Player of the week for his efforts. Henning also handles punting for the Mountain Hawks, while Van Dusen handles kickoffs.

PROGNOSIS NEGATIVEOne of the highlights in Lehigh’s victory over Merrimack was a defensive effort that limited the Warriors to just three points and minus-25 rushing yards. The minus-25 rushing yards were the fewest allowed since Lehigh limited Georgetown to minus-8 rushing yards in a 69-0 victory in 2002. Even if you take out the six Lehigh sacks, which accounted for 41 rushing yards lost, the Mountain Hawks limited Merrimack to 16 rushing yards, which would’ve been the fewest allowed by Lehigh since yielding just seven to Drake in the 2008 season opener.

MAYBE WE SHOULD WEAR NAMETAGSLehigh has 32 fi rst-year student-athletes on its 2019 roster, including several who have contributed from game one. Fourteen freshmen appear on Lehigh’s depth chart (page 12), including four projected starters. Twenty-one of the 32 freshmen have appeared in at least one game, with seven having played in all nine. Eight freshmen have started at least one game for Lehigh this season. Defensive end Mikhari Sibblis has started all nine and cornerback Brandon Spencer has started six. Tight end Ian O’Connor, wide receiver Jalen Burbage and offensive linemen Brendon Passarelli and Damon Stewart have all started games on offense. Wide receiver Jack Sutton and safety TyGee Leach made their fi rst career starts at Colgate.

TAKE ‘EM AWAY, BOYSAfter fi nishing with a negative turnover margin in four of the last fi ve seasons, the Mountain Hawks started strong in 2019 with three takeaways and a plus-2 turnover margin against Saint Francis. Lehigh recovered three fumbles against the Red Flash, marking the fi rst time the Mountain Hawks had three fumble recoveries in one game since a 35-14 win at Central Connecticut State on Sept. 8, 2012. The Mountain Hawks had exactly 13 takeaways in four of the last fi ve seasons and have 12 through nine games, six fumble recoveries and six interceptions. The Mountain Hawks won the turnover battle against Saint Francis, but have had negative or even turnover margin in their next eight games. Lehigh is minus-2 through fi ve league games and sits at minus-4 overall this season.

TO THE END, AGAINIt didn’t come down to the fi nal play, but Lehigh’s game with Holy Cross was not decided until the fi nal minute. The Mountain Hawks were driving for a potential tying touchdown but Holy Cross’ Chris Riley came up with an interception at the Crusader fi ve yard line to deal Lehigh its fi rst league loss. All three of Lehigh’s league wins have come on the fi nal play. At Colgate, it was Divine Buckrham’s game-saving tackle at the one yard line. Against Fordham, it was a four-yard touchdown pass from Addison Shoup to Devon Bibbens in overtime. Against Georgetown, Austin Henning kicked a 27-yard fi eld goal as time expired to win it for the Mountain Hawks. It was Lehigh’s fi rst game-winning fi eld goal as time expired since Jake Peery booted a 22-yarder to edge Fordham 34-31 on Sept. 29, 2012.

GAME 10: LEHIGH AT SACRED HEART • PAGE 6SLOTTED FOR SUCCESSJunior Jorge Portorreal is Lehigh’s lone returning fi rst team All-League performer. Playing primarily as a slot receiver, Portorreal led the Mountain Hawks with 55 receptions for 794 yards last season and tied for the team lead with three touchdown catches. Portorreal’s 72.2 receiving yards per game were also tops in the Patriot League. The Union, N.J. native was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week following a nine-catch, 216-yard, two-touchdown ef-fort against Bucknell last November. Portorreal caught an 85-yard touchdown at Georgetown, the longest play from scrimmage for Lehigh in 2018. He was the lone Mountain Hawk named to the preseason All-Patriot League team in late July. Portorreal tied a career high with nine catches at UC Davis. He had eight receptions for a season-high 103 yards against Georgetown, his fourth career 100-yard receiving game.

99 YARDS (AND A HALF)Trailing Colgate 14-7 and backed up against its goal line, the Lehigh offense responded with its best drive of the season. The Mountain Hawks marched 99 yards over 13 plays, keyed by a 60-yard catch-and-run by freshman Nate Hope, and scored the game-tying touchdown on a one-yard keeper by Tyler Monaco with 18 seconds left before halftime. The 99 yard drive was the fi rst for a Lehigh offense since the Mountain Hawks put together an 11-play, 99-yard drive against Towson in the 2011 playoffs. That drive was capped by a 23-yard halfback option pass from Matt Fitz to Jamel Haggins on fourth down. In between 99 yard drives, Lehigh had 10 scoring drives of 90 yards or more, includ-ing three in the 2017 season.

SHOUP SOLID WHEN CALLED UPONJunior quarterback Addison Shoup came off the bench to deliver the lone touchdown in Lehigh’s victory over Merrimack. The ath-letic Shoup showcased his scrambling ability, scoring on a 36-yard run on the second play of the fourth quarter to give the Mountain Hawks a 10-3 lead. Shoup completed 6-of-11 passes for 173 yards, including completions of 80 and 44 yards in the most extensive action at quarterback in his career. The Marietta, Ga., native has been Lehigh’s holder since the start of last season. He saw his fi rst game action at quarterback at Villanova and came on in relief of an injured Tyler Monaco to throw the game-winning touchdown pass in overtime at Fordham.

“SPECIAL” SAFETIESLehigh’s starting safety duo of fi fth-year senior Sam McCloskey and freshman TyGee Leach have both been honored by the Patriot League this season for their efforts on special teams. McCloskey had two fumble recoveries on punt plays against Saint Francis, and returned the second one 56 yards for his fi rst career touchdown. Leach helped swing momentum Lehigh’s way with a blocked punt in the third quarter of the Mountain Hawks’ win over Merrimack. He came through with the fi rst blocked punt for the Mountain Hawks since Tyler Cavenas blocked one against Holy Cross in 2017.

A PAIR OF FIFTH-YEARS ON DEFENSELehigh’s roster regularly features student-athletes who earned fi fth years of eligibility due to medical hardships. This year, the Mountain Hawks’ defense will benefi t from fi fth-year players Sam McCloskey and Juwan Morrow. McCloskey, now a three-year captain and All-Patriot League performer a season ago, returns at safety, while Morrow will be a key performer on the interior of Lehigh’s defensive line. Both players earned undergraduate degrees in May; McCloskey in management and Morrow in earth and environmental science.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL TURNS 150The 2019 season marks the 150th anniversary of college football, which will be celebrated across the country. With a record of 700-609-45, Lehigh ranks seventh among all current FCS programs in all-time victories. Lehigh has won a league-best 12 Patriot League championships, plus eight Lambert Cups, as the top college foot-ball team in the East, to go along with its 1977 Division II National Championship. Lehigh will be recognizing this year’s celebration by wearing the CFB150 decal on its helmets.

ACADEMIC SUCCESSFollowing the 2018 season, Lehigh placed 25 student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. Fifteen of those selections are back this season, including junior Pete Haffner, who earned Academic All-Patriot League honors last season. Haffner owns a 3.70 cumulative GPA in fi nance. Twenty out of 50 upperclass Moun-tain Hawks have a GPA of 3.0 or better, led by sophomore Austin Dambach, who holds a 3.93 in business. In addition to Haffner and Dambach, junior Zac Troxell and sophomore Rashawn Allen are also cumulatively over 3.60.

LEHIGH VS. THE NECLehigh entered the 2019 season having a history with four of the nine current Northeast Conference programs that sponsor football, with Central Connecticut State being the most-often faced opponent. The Mountain Hawks and Blue Devils have met fi ve times previously, including season-opening games in 2009, 2013 and 2015. Lehigh opened its season with a one-point loss to Saint Francis and posted its fi rst win of 2019 over Division I newcomer Merrimack, which is not playing a full conference schedule. Merrimack and LIU (formerly LIU Post) moved up to Division I prior to this season. This will be the fi rst meeting between Lehigh and Sacred Heart.

PRESEASON PROGNOSTICATIONSLehigh was picked fifth in the Patriot League preseason poll, announced in late July. The Mountain Hawks garnered 38 points in the poll of the league’s head coaches and SIDs. Defending champion Colgate was picked fi rst with 12 fi rst place votes, while Holy Cross was picked sec-ond. Georgetown was picked third, with Fordham in fourth, just one point ahead of the Mountain Hawks. Lehigh went 3-8 last season but won Patriot League titles in the previous two campaigns.

PENNSYLVANIA PROUDThe Mountain Hawks’ roster features 17 student-athletes from the state of Penn-sylvania. In recent years, Lehigh has had a handful of Lehigh Valley products on its roster. This year, the Mountain Hawks have just one, sophomore defensive back T.J. Rakowsky (Erwinna/Palisades).

ON DECKLehigh will host Lafayette in the 155th meeting of college football’s most-played rivalry, Nov. 23 at Goodman Stadium. The Mountain Hawks will be seeking their fi fth straight win over the Leopards, who could be potentially be playing for a Patriot League championship depending on this week’s results.

An in-tense and pas-sionate leader with more than 30 years of coaching experience at high-end academic institutions, Tom Gilmore begins his fi rst season as Lehigh’s head football coach. Gilm-

ore was hired on January 8, 2019 as the 29th head football coach in school history. The appointment marks a return to Lehigh for Gilmore, who spent four seasons as the Mountain Hawks’ defensive coordinator and linebackers coach from 2000-2003.

Gilmore spent the 2018 season at Wake Forest, working on a staff that was led by former Lehigh offensive coordinator Dave Clawson and that also featured former Lehigh head coach Kevin Higgins, who hired Gilmore to lead Lehigh’s defense in 2000. He initially joined the Demon Deacons as a defensive analyst for the 2018 season but was elevated to coach the outside linebackers following an in-season change in defensive leadership. Wake Forest capped its 2018 campaign with a 37-34 win over Memphis in the Birmingham Bowl.

Prior to the 2018 season, all of Gilmore’s previous coaching experience came from Patriot League or Ivy League institutions.

Gilmore spent 14 seasons as head coach at Holy Cross, where he was a two-time Patriot League Coach of the Year and led the Crusaders to a Patriot League Championship and FCS Playoff appearance in 2009. His 72 victories rank second in Holy Cross history, and included a 41-40 Patriot League record.

During Gilmore’s time at Holy Cross, 102 Crusaders were named to All-Patriot League teams. Under Gilmore’s guidance, quarterback Dominic Randolph was a three-time Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year and was a three-time fi nalist for the Walter Payton Award, given to the outstand-ing offensive player in the FCS. Holy Cross had eight winning seasons during Gilmore’s tenure, and in a fi ve-season stretch from 2007-2011, the Crusaders fi nished no worse that second in the Patriot League standings.

Gilmore’s Holy Cross teams were also successful in the classroom. The Crusaders received NCAA academic progress rate pub-lic recognition awards in seven of his fi nal 11

seasons and Holy Cross consistently ranked at or near the top of the Patriot League in terms of NCAA academic progress rates and graduation success rates.

The most successful Holy Cross team of the Gilmore Era was the 2009 squad, which won the program’s fi rst Patriot League title in 18 years, with a 9-3 overall record, as the Crusaders made just their second NCAA playoff appearance. Gilmore’s 2009 team led the Patriot League in scoring offense (32.2 points/game) and ranked fourth nationally in passing offense (314.9 yards/game) and sixth in total offense (433.6 yards/game).

Following the 2009 season, two Cru-saders earned All-America honors, while 15 were named All-Patriot League. Gilmore was named Patriot League Coach of the Year, New England Coach of the Year, and was a fi nalist for the Eddie Robinson Award. He was also named Patriot League Coach of the Year in 2006 after guiding the Crusaders to a 7-4 season and 4-2 league mark.

Gilmore took over the Holy Cross program in 2004, following four successful seasons serving as Lehigh’s defensive coor-dinator and linebackers coach. In his initial four-year stint at Lehigh, Gilmore helped lead the Mountain Hawks to a 39-9 overall record. Lehigh posted back-to-back undefeat-ed regular seasons and won Patriot League titles and qualifi ed for the I-AA playoffs in Gilmore’s fi rst two seasons, 2000 and 2001. The Mountain Hawks won playoff games in both of those seasons and captured the 2001 Lambert Cup.

In 2003, Gilmore molded Lehigh’s defense into one of the top units at its level. Lehigh led the Patriot League in scoring defense (16.8 points/game) and sacks (34), and ranked second in rushing defense (126.2 yards/game) and total defense (304.9 yards/game).

The 2001 season saw Gilmore named Assistant Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association, after help-ing transform a young and inexperienced defense into one of the top units in Division I-AA. The Mountain Hawks ranked fi fth nationally in rushing defense and 12th in scoring defense. Lehigh also ranked in the top 20 in total defense and ranked fi fth in turnover margin. That season, Lehigh posted a 10-0 regular season and then defeated Hof-stra 27-24 in an overtime thriller at Goodman Stadium in the opening round of the I-AA playoffs.

In Gilmore’s fi rst season at Lehigh, the Mountain Hawks ranked sixth nationally in scoring defense and fi fth in both rushing defense and turnover margin. In addition, Lehigh’s defense ranked fourth nationally

with 22 interceptions and scored fi ve defen-sive touchdowns.

Gilmore came to Lehigh after eight seasons at Dartmouth, where he coached the offensive line before taking over the linebackers and eventually, serving as defen-sive coordinator. He helped the Big Green to two Ivy League titles, including the 1996 season in which Dartmouth went 10-0 and fi nished the season ranked 17th nationally. In Gilmore’s tenure, Dartmouth posted a 22-game unbeaten streak from 1995-1997. He also coached a team of Ivy League All-Stars to a victory in the 1996 Epsom Ivy Bowl in Osaka, Japan.

While serving as Dartmouth’s defensive coordinator in 1997, Gilmore oversaw one of the top defensive units in recent school his-tory. The Big Green boasted the nation’s sec-ond-ranked rushing defense, allowing just 77.3 yards per game and 2.3 yards per carry. Dartmouth allowed just 16.5 points per game in 1997 while recording 40 quarterback sacks and 17 interceptions in 10 games.

Gilmore’s coaching career began at his alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania, where he served as assistant defensive line coach in 1986. He then moved on to Colum-bia for three seasons as defensive line and outside linebackers coach, before returning to Penn for two seasons as offensive line coach.

A standout defensive lineman at Penn, Gilmore earned All-Ivy honors as part of three consecutive Ivy League championship teams, and was an All-American in his fi nal two seasons. As a senior in 1985, Gilmore received the Asa S. Bushnell Cup as the Ivy League Player of the Year, and was one of only two linemen to ever claim the honor before it was divided into offensive and defensive awards in 2012. He also earned the George A. Munger Award as the team’s Most Valuable Player, the Chuck Bednarik Award as the team’s top lineman and the Class of 1915 Award as Penn’s top male scholar-athlete.

Gilmore is a 1986 graduate of Penn with a degree in computer mathematics. He and his wife Joan have a daughter, Sarah, and a son, Jack.
