A WORD FROM YOUR PRESIDENT

Summer is almost here according to the calendar. Let’s hope that the

weather catches up to the calendar.

Summer is a quieter time at Confederation Park 55+ Activity Centre.

This year the center will be open Monday to Friday with some staff

available every day. There will be some classes and drop-in activities

available for you if you want to be involved.

This is the time of year for visits with and from grandchildren, great

grandchildren and friends of old. A time for barbeques and festivals!

A time to enjoy the fruits of your labor if you still have a garden to

cultivate. Or a time to enjoy the fruits of someone else’s labor at

outdoor markets and festivals. The Calgary Stampede will be upon us soon as well.

Hopefully we will have a warm and sunny summer as our spring has been far from that. With the

warm and sunny weather comes concern over the incidence of skin cancer. It is important to take

precautions when out in the sun. One in three diagnosed cancers are skin cancer. 80-90% of these

cancers are caused by ultra-violet radiation from the sun. Getting a sunburn as most of us did as

children also puts us at greater risk of developing skin cancer. In 2017, 7,200 Canadians were

diagnosed with melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Of that 7,200, 3,300 were women and

450 women died from it. The rate of melanoma among men is greater than for women. Women are

more like to wear a heat and protective clothing than men.

I am sure many of you have friends and relatives who have had skin cancer. My mother had

melanoma many years ago and was considered cured. However, the treatment certainly took its toll

on her. She did not die as a result of the cancer however she was careful the rest of her life by

wearing 50+ SPF sun block and wearing a sun-blocking shirt and hat when out in the sun. Living in

Calgary puts us at a higher risk of 38% compared to those who live in Edmonton of getting skin

cancer.

As the Aussies say, “Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide”.

Slip on sun-protective clothing! Slop on the sun screen!

Slap on a hat! Seek shade!Slide on those sunglasses!

Let’s all be safe this summer! Let’s summer enjoy our weather and all Calgary and area has to offer. Wendy Rodger

From the Executive Director

Summer is just around the corner and we can finally start planting flowers!! Love this time of year

for sure.

We have some classes and clubs running for the summer which is really nice. Keep an eye on the

Gazette for those and if you are interested, please come in and join us! The Centre will now be open

Monday through Friday for the whole summer with exception of statutory holidays.

I am looking for someone who may be able to teach Mahjong in the fall. If you are interested in

learning how to play, please let me know. We have a few people who are interested and I would love

to see a few more.

A couple of new things will come into play for September this year. We will have new parking passes

which are numbered. If you lose them you will have to pay $5.00 to replace them. The numbered

passes make more sense in the event that you have your lights on or you may have parked in two

spots, then we can look you up and come talk with you.

We will also be ticketing and towing if cars have no pass or have not registered as a guest with the

office. If you are a member and your car is left in the parking lot overnight please ensure that you let

someone in the office know to prevent being towed.

People parking in our parking lot has been an ongoing issue and with our increasing classes and

activities we want to reduce those that are parking here that shouldn’t be.

Classes will be assessed June 15 for viability, and that leaves us time to cancel the class if there are not

enough people signed up. Please watch carefully for registration dates online and inhouse.

So please sign up early.

The staff have a very busy summer ahead with reorganizing the centre, cleaning and of

course….vacations!!

Garage sale is fast approaching and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible, either

shopping or maybe volunteering. We appreciate your support in any way of this amazing event!

If anyone has some art that they would like to donate to the centre we would welcome some new

additions. We are wanting to refresh our walls with bright, colourful art for the fall. Sometimes a

refresh makes things feel invigorating.

We have some great events planned for the fall session. A welcome back lunch on September 27th

featuring the “Hub Caps”. The tickets will be $15.00 for lunch and entertainment. October 18th we will

be hosting a Fashion Show with clothing from our boutique. The tickets for this will be $5.00.

November 22 & 23 we will be hosting an Indigenous Event which will host a variety of different

things to attend. Some of these include a drumming session, a Blanket Ceremony, Jingle Dancers,

Poetry and more. Ticket prices for this event will be set closer to the event.

Lastly, we will be doing a catered lunch for our Christmas Event on

December 9th. Tickets for this will be $15.00/person. We used the same

caterer for the welcome back in January and it was extremely good. Tickets

will be on sale closer to all of the events for October, November and

December. The tickets for the September event will be available for purchase

in August.

JUNE 11 TO 17 IS MEN’S HEALTH MONTH WEEK

Join Canadians from coast to coast to coast in the goal of improving men’s and

family health in Canada.

Did you know that 72% of Canadian men live unhealthy lifestyles? This we

know from the first national study of all health behaviors from a new

Canadian research study. What did they find? Two or more unhealthy habits

were noted including a poor diet, smoking cigarettes, problem drinking, not

exercising or not getting regular sleep.

Most Canadian men can move to healthy lifestyle by changing just one or two

behaviors.

Become aware of preventable health problems and encourage early detection

and treatment of disease among our men and boys. Let’s encourage our men

and boys to seek regular medical advice and early treatment for disease and

injury.

Scrapbooking Club

Are you interested in preserving your cherished memories, family mementoes or family

history? Are you tired of digging through boxes and envelops of material? Are you losing

documents, pictures, keepsakes or treasured letters?

There is a solution: Scrapbooking

Scrapbooking has a history dating from the 15th

century in England with commonplace books.

They were a way to compile information that

included recipes, quotations, letters and more. In

the 16th century Friendship albums became

popular. These albums were used like the

modern-day yearbooks that included names of

friends or patrons with titles, short texts or

illustrations. They were often created as souvenirs – a way of journaling a vacation or time abroad. During the 19th century,

scrapbooking was looked at a more involved way of preserving and cataloguing experiences,

journaling and other forms of logging.

Today scrapbook artists use several formats including mini albums, off-the-page creations and

various accessories. One of the key components of modern scrapbooking are the archival

quality of the materials and supplies.

If you are looking to give that perfect give, a personalized memento beautifully created for that

cherished memory.

The benefits of home care

For many Canadian seniors, home health care is a key part of aging safely at home. Whether seniors need medical services, personal care, transportation, housekeeping or companionship, home care can help them live independently at home, for as long as possible – and provide peace of mind to their families. “At Bayshore Home Health, we’ve been helping seniors age in place for over 50 years”, says Crystal Rousseau, Care Manager, Bayshore Home Health, Calgary. “Our customized care plans are designed to provide the support seniors need to continue to live in their own homes. Bayshore’s home care services include personal support, companionship, meal preparation, housekeeping, medication reminders, nursing, serious injury care and palliative care.

Don’t wait until it is too late to decide what works best for you. Talk to your family about aging in place safely, with the supports you need.

Support is just a phone call away.

Joyce Reddy, Dance Instructor

Joyce Reddy is one of the many instructors at Confederation Park 55+ Activity Centre

and has been teaching here at Confederation Park for more than 16 years. The classes that Joyce

teaches are Tap Dance for every level ranging from beginners to intermediate, Jazz Dance,

Ballet for Seniors and First Years.

Joyce has been a dancing instructor since she was 18 years old and preformed as a professional

dancer in Europe, United States and in Canada. She has created the Joyce Reddy Dance studio

in Calgary and has instructed dance for more than 20 years ranging from Jazz, Tap, to Ballet for

all age groups. Not only is Joyce an accomplished dancer, but also an accomplished performer

on stage, television and in films, and has participated in numerous events and cabarets. Joyce

provides instructions for new commers to dance and offers advice to experienced dancers, but

also gets to know you as a student and others who have the same interest in dance. As an

instructor Joyce has taught many pupils and several of her students have passed their

examination in dance, and have also gone on to win many competitions.

Like her pupils Joyce has also participated in competitions. As a result of Joyce’s hard work

and passion she won both 1st and 2nd place in the Ballroom Dancing, American Cross-Country

Championship as the first Canadian to win. Joyce also won 1st place in the Gold Standard Cha- Cha, Fred Astair Ballroom Dance Studios.

What makes taking classes so fun are the interactions with others, but also an instructor who

helps nurture these connections and makes the entire experience enjoyable. Dancing helps to

improve cardiovascular health, helps decrease heart disease and reduce the risk of dementia.

Dancing is a fun way to do some physical exercise and participants do not have to be super fit

to dance and anyone can do it.

With an incredible instructor like Joyce dancing is a sure way to meet new people, a great way

to get your exercise for the day and a wonderful way to make lifelong friends. Take advantage

of these dance classes, especially with an instructor as diverse and talented as our Joyce Reddy.

CONFEDERATION PARK 55+ ACTIVITY CENTRE BOOK CLUB REVIEW "The Little Paris Bookshop” by Nina George was the topic of our May 7 meeting. This international best seller was translated from German into 37 languages. The “little bookshop” is actually a large book barge moored on the Seine, named Literary Apothecary. Its owner, Jean Perdu, dispenses books as a cure for all sorts of ailments and distress. Perdu’s heart was broken more than 20 years ago when the love of his life left him without explanation, other than a letter which he had never opened. When early in the story he finally opens the letter, he realizes he has made a terrible mistake. The pain he had tried to shut out all these years overwhelms him. Impulsively he unties the barge’s moorings and sets course on the waterways to Southern France, in search of remediation. An uninvited guest jumps on board at the last moment: young Max Jordan, who in his early twenties has published an international best seller. Max cannot bear the expectation that he should write another book and he is desperately fleeing from his mostly young, female fans. During the trip the men become great friends, slowly opening up about their problems. The journey passes through beautiful French landscapes and little towns, through dozens of locks, and they meet interesting fellow travelers. They have fascinating adventures and pick up two more ship mates: Cuneo, a lovelorn Italian Chef, and Samy (Samantha), who falls in love with Cuneo. They all struggle with life’s challenges, and the book is full of interesting sayings about love, friendship, death, missed opportunities, grief denied, letting go and starting again. There’s a happy ending for all. Realistic? Probably not, but entertaining, humorous, and not without substance.

Brain Teaser:

1. Seven friends each has a home aquarium and each aquarium contains a different number of topical

fish. Bill has four times as many fish as Angela, who has thee times as many fish as Carol, who has ten

fewer fish than Colin, who has a third as many fish as Brian. How many fish has each person got if the

total number of fish is 107?

Tolstoy, Rasputin, Others and Me, By Teffi

Nadezhda Lokhvitskaya, who wrote under the pen name

Teffi, may very well have been the most popular writer in

Russia at the time leading up to the revolution. Her

newspaper columns were read by nearly everyone, no

matter their political leanings, and both revolutionaries and

the Russian royal family were among fans. Until recently

she has been largely unknown to English readers, but new

translations of her work, such as this, should bring a flock

of new admirers.

These pieces cover a wide period of her life; from her

privileged and precocious childhood, through her early

years supporting the revolutionary cause, to her ultimate rejection of Bolshevism. Told

in a series of insightful and witty vignettes, she gives us looks at historical figures such

as Rasputin and Lenin as she knew them; not larger than life figures but human beings.

The story where she decides, at the age of fourteen, to convince Tolstoy to change the

ending of War and Peace is a particular delight, but all the pieces in this book are

wonderful. The humanity and humor may remind the reader of Mark Twain, but the

subject matter is so dark at times that it would be wrong to think of Teffi as a humorist.

She has very serious observations to make, and uses her light touch to make the

horrors of Russian civil war less unbearable. She was a light in a time of darkness and

we English language readers are lucky to now be able to share her world

If 7 was transformed into 13 and 11 is changed to 21 then what does 16 become?

Brain Teaser:

2. In this puzzle, each letter represents a different number. Can you work out what number (0-9) each

letter stands for? The leftmost letter cannot be zero in any word.

Living with Arthritis

One in five adults suffer from arthritis, and the majority of these are seniors.

For older adults to understand the stages of living with arthritis, it’s helpful to

talk about how the disease is identified, diagnosed and managed.

Signs and symptoms:

Generally, symptoms of arthritis can include any of the following: joint

redness, swelling, pain, stiffness, warmth, or difficulty with movement. Many

people are familiar with arthritis of the hands and feet, but they don’t always

realize that it can affect any joint in the body. Anyone experiencing these

symptoms should visit their physician.

Diagnosis:

When diagnosing arthritis, medical professionals will typically conduct a

physical exam, and gather medical history and genetics information to help

identify the type of arthritis. Blood tests and imaging may be necessary as

well. The type and severity of the arthritis will determine the ongoing

treatment plan. While arthritis cannot be cured, it can be managed to limit the

impact it has on seniors.

Strategies for arthritis management:

The treating physician can recommend arthritis management strategies and

should approve all plans to change or increase physical activity that may

impact the condition.

• Lifestyle changes: Seniors with arthritis may need to stop performing

certain activities, or limit them. Depending on the area of the body

affected, some hobbies may become more difficult. However, planning

ahead can be helpful – for example, having a stool to sit on in the

kitchen can help seniors that want to cook but have difficulty standing

for long periods of time due to arthritis pain. Some seniors with arthritis

get into the habit of using nonaffected parts of the body more often. As

an example, someone suffering from arthritis pain in their wrist may

open doors by using their shoulder or elbow to push.

• Movement: For some types of arthritis, sitting or working in one

position for too long can cause the condition to worsen. Moving, walking

and stretching every 15 minutes can be helpful. For some, setting an

alarm as a reminder to prompt movement can be helpful.

• Weight – Maintaining a healthy weight can be helpful in managing

arthritis. Excess weight can cause strain on joints, worsening the

condition. Anyone concerned about this should consult their physician

for exercise and diet recommendations. Physical activity, if possible,

can also help reduce arthritis symptoms in many cases. Arthritis is not

a diagnosis – it’s a general term that covers more than 100 diseases

and conditions affecting the joints. Education and awareness are critical

– seniors that may have arthritis, or have already been diagnosed,

should engage their care team to develop management strategies.

Comfort Keepers® Can Help A care plan for arthritis can minimize the impact of the disease on a senior’s life, and Comfort Keepers

can provide support for a management program. Our caregivers remind clients to take medication, provide transportation to scheduled

appointments, and support physician-prescribed exercise regimens and diets. As part of an individualized care plan, caregivers can

also help with activities like cooking, cleaning and physical care. Our goal is to see that clients have the means to find the joy and

happiness in each day, regardless of age or acuity.

Lets focus this year on tobacco and lung health and increasing awareness of

negative affects tobacco has, including an increased risk for cancer and

chronic lungh disease. Most people know smoking is bad for you, but just

how bad is it? Tobacco use is the single greatest avoidable risk factor for

death due to lung cancer, and roughly 80% of lung cancers could be

prevented if smoking was eliminated. One hundred Canadians die of a

smoking-related illness every day, but despite these warnings, about 5

million Canadians—that’s 16% of us—regularly light up.

There are so many reasons to live smoke free – most of them related to your

Every day, seniors in Calgary make many contributions to their communities and we are celebrating with Senior’s Week, June 2 – 8, 2019. Sadly, sometimes the challenges of hearing loss can impact our involvement in the activities we enjoy.

Hearing loss is one of the fastest growing chronic conditions facing Canadians, 78% of Adults age 60-79 experience hearing loss (Stats Canada, 2016 Census). It can be sudden or gradual, and it is quite common for someone to not realize they are developing hearing loss. On average, it takes 7 years to acknowledge and act on hearing loss. There are many causes, ranging from excess noise, illness, genetic factors and ototoxic drugs. Hearing loss affects all ages. Recent research suggests that the longer a hearing loss goes unmanaged, the more challenging it will be to learn to cope with the changes. When we start using our hearing aids, we can re-train our brain, and rebuild and strengthen the connections that we used to hear.

The City of Calgary has many wonderful free events and activities happening throughout Senior’s Week. As part of the kick-off, Age-Friendly Calgary is holding a Resource Fair at the City Hall Atrium on June 3, from 10:30 am – 1:30 pm, with the focus being on “Changing Perceptions of Aging”. Deaf & Hear Alberta will be joining the Fair with information regarding hearing loss and staying safe in your home with the addition of assistive devices. Our knowledgeable staff will also be able to help with general questions about other equipment and funding options.

We have also partnered with the Third ACTion Film Festival this year to help make their event more accessible to the hard of hearing community. “THIRD ACTion Film Festival's focus is to celebrate ageing and the accomplishments of older adults to help speed along an age-positive culture shift and empower everyone to envision their best third act”. So enjoy great movies celebrating seniors at the Glenbow Museum Theatre June 7 – 9, 2019. Tickets are available at www.thirdactionfilmfest.ca

If your club members would like to have a presentation on managing hearing loss, tips for living with hearing aids, and information about assistive equipment, please contact Sharron Nixon, [email protected]

As always, our Accessibility Services Department is ready to assist you with an assortment of amplified devices. Anna Gibson of the TELUS Community Ambassadors came by for a visit.

Members of our Confederation Park 55+ Activity Centre and participants in the

Shared Handicraft class knit and crochet 8 X 16 rectangles. The TELUS

Community Ambassadors of retires stitch these rectangles together to make

and donate throws and blankets. Marlene Monilaws (pictured above in the

white and black sweater) on behalf of Anna Gibson the Telus’ representative

presented to Maxime (in the blue shirt) our volunteer from the Kitchen a stuffed

Telus mascot – a snow leopard. And pictured along with Marlene and Maxime

are the rest of our Shared Handicraft class. Great job by our members!!
