Its that time of year again.
Over the next few weeks
the hustle and bustle will
begin to pick up as local folk
are preparing for Christmas.
The holiday season inevitably
means an extra-long To-Do
List. But before you can think
about buying any gifts or pre-
pare for any parties, one cen-
tral Yule-tide detail needs to be
taken care of: The ChristmasTree.
Beginning this month,
Anello Fence will be home to
one of the areas top Christmas
Tree outlets. Featuring balsam
firs, Anello has a tree for any
budget and home type. Trees
start at just $19.99 and are as
tall as 12 feet. Whether you are
seeking a tree for your apart-
ment or your cathedral-ceiling
home, Anellos should be your
first choice. Additionally, live
wreaths are for sale to make
the holidays even brighter. At
Anello Fence, quality is a pri-
ority and customer service is
second nature, especially dur-
ing Christmas time! They rec-
ognize the spirit of the season, and in an act of Christmas giv-
ing part of the proceeds gener-
ated from the trees will go
toward the Pequannock Fire
Department.
Anello Fence is already
known for top quality products
in the Fencing Industry. Steve
Anello, owner, is a member of
the American Fence Associa-
tion and has more than 25
years of experience in the busi-
ness, being third generation in
the fence industry. He takes
great pride in being able to
provide the highest value
fences to residential and com-
mercial customers, installing
all types of standard and cus-
tom designs. The company hasgrown through the years and it
continues to offer fences of
timeless beauty combined with
great durability. Anello Fence
provides customers with a
long-lasting product that is vir-
tually maintenance-free, with

Many people equate
charity to financial
donations. But indi-
viduals can be charitable with
their time as well.
According to Char-
ity Navigator, a non-
profit organization that
monitors charities,
Americans gave more
than $290 billion to
charity in 2010. Thirty-five percent of all dona-
tions went to religious
organizations. Much of
these contributions can
be attributed to people
giving to their local place of
worship. Donations toward ed-
ucational services and pro-
grams were the second most
common types of donations.
Although charitable giv-
ing through monetary dona-
tions are important, men and
women can donate more than
just money. Here are some
ways to do just that.
Donate hair. There are many
different charities that collect
hair for individuals undergoing
cancer treatments that resulted
in hair loss. These charities
collect hair of lengths
between 8 to 12 inches
and turn the locks into
wigs for the needy.
Donate your stuff. Be-
fore tossing unused
items into the trash, as-sess these items and de-
termine if theyre still
useful. There are many
places that will accept
noncash donations, be
it clothing, electronics, chil-
drens toys, etc. For example,

Anormal spine when
viewed from the back
appears straight.
When the spine is affected by
scoliosis there is evidence of alateral or sideways curvature
and a rotation of the vertebrae
(back bone). The Scoliosis Re-
search Center defines scoliosis
as a curvature of the spine
measuring ten degrees or
greater on x-ray.
According to the Na-
tional Institute of Arthritis
and Musculoskeletal and Skin
Diseases three to five out of
every 1,000 children develop
spinal curves that are consid-ered large enough to require
treatment. There are three dif-
ferent types of scoliosis that
can occur in children:
Congenital scoliosis- This type
of scoliosis is often caused by
failure of the vertebrae to
form normally, absence of the
vertebrae, partial formation of
the vertebrae or a lack of sep-
aration of the vertebrae.
Neuromuscular scoliosis- This
type of scoliosis is associatedwith neurological conditions
including cerebral palsy, spina
bifida, muscular dystrophy,
spinal cord tumors and para-
lytic conditions.
Idiopathic scoliosis- The cause
of this type of scoliosis is un-
known and makes up 80- 85
% of all cases.
Other causes of scoliosis
may include hereditary condi-
tions, differences in leg
lengths, injury, infections andtumors. Scoliosis usually de-
velops when the bones are
growing most rapidly, usually
from the ages of 9-14 years.
It is very important for
children to be screened fre-
quently as they will rarely feel
any pain when the scoliosis is
first developing. The symptoms
of scoliosis may include differ-
ence in shoulder height, hip
height or shoulder blade height. There may be a difference in
the way the arms hang beside
the body when the child is
standing straight. In addition,
the sides of the back may appear
asymmetrical in height when
the child is bending forward.
The treatment goal of all
pediatric spinal deformities is to
maintain function, prevent
symptoms in the short term and
long term and most importantlyto stop the progression of the
curve and prevent deformity. If
the scoliosis is detected early
the child can receive treatment
that may control the condition
and prevent other problems.
Several studies have demon-
strated the relationship be-
tween trunk strength and
scoliosis and the value of spinal
strength training in adolescent
idiopathic scoliosis with curvesmeasuring 20 to 60 degrees.
Treatment depends on the
severity of the curve.
Mild curves should be checked
every six months by the physi-
cian. In addition, your pediatric
physical therapist should rec-
ommend exercises that improve
flexibility and strengthen the
muscles that support the spine.
Moderate curves that measure
between 25- 40 degrees on an x-
ray benefit from bracing in con-
junction with exercises.
Electric stimulation also may besuccessful for certain types of
scoliosis.
When bracing and exercise do
not slow the progression of a se-
vere curve that is 50 degrees or
greater, surgery may be neces-
sary. Surgery can usually be
avoided if the condition is de-
tected and treated early.
Early detection is crucial.
If left untreated, the scoliosis
can cause problems with heartand lung function.

As a Retirement and
Estate Planning Spe-
cialist, a Financial
Planner and a Certified Annu-
ity Specialist, licensed for over
thirty years, I continue to hear
this question virtually every
day. As a matter of fact, mil-
lions of people are investing
billions of their hard earneddollars into vehicles that an-
swer this question with a re-
sounding YES! There is only
one investment opportunity
available that offers all of these
features simultaneously and its
called an Annuity.
Suffice it to say that an-
nuities have gotten some bad
press since their invention
over 130 years ago, some of the
press was accurate and deserv-ing, other articles were way off
base. A certain female TV
personality, who claims to be a
financial advisor, never has
anything good to say about an-
nuities. Her influence over her
viewers has kept these good
people away from learning
about the benefits that some
great companies and their
products have to offer. This is
truly unfortunate. She likes tobeat up the annuity salesper-
son stating, Why would you
put your tax-deferred IRA into
a tax-deferred annuity and pay
for the tax-deferral benefit of
an annuity when the IRA is al-
ready tax-deferred? She fur-
ther claims that the
motivation behind the recom-
mendation is all about com-
missions. This is absolutely
bunk and Ill tell you why.
Firstly, what does the in-
surance company charge for
tax-deferral? Answer ZERO!
Thats right! There is no tax-
deferral charge as Congress
deemed annuities tax-deferred,
not the insurance industry.
Well, if not for tax-deferralwhy would anyone purchase
an annuity and which of the
three should one consider for
their money; the TFA or tradi-
tional fixed annuity, the FIA
or fixed indexed annuity and
the VA or variable annuity? In
each case, the annuity offers a
death benefit guarantee and
probate protection in addition
to tax-deferral. Each of the an-
nuities also offers a lifetime in-come through Annuitization
and herein lays the basis of a
great deal of confusion and an-
tiquated information. An-
other word for Annuitization is
Annuicide, which, sounds like
suicide. In most cases when
you annuitize, you must forfeit
the principal to receive an in-
come payment for life or a
guaranteed period of time or
both. Today however, to re-
ceive a single or joint lifetimeincome with your spouse, An-
nuitization is no longer re-
quired. Thats right! You can
have your cake and eat it too.
Not only can you elect to re-
ceive an income for the rest of
your life or in addition spouses
lifetime, you retain control of
the principal too! But theres
more.
While youre waiting to
initiate the income, leavingthe account to grow as you pre-
pare for retirement, the insur-
ance company will guarantee a
minimum annual percentage
of growth to the value each
year that will provide you the
income when you elect it.
Now, not only will the income
be guaranteed for life but it
will also be guaranteed to be
based on a potentially larger
income base even if the an-
nuity performance was nega-tive, poor or zero depending on
the investment selections and
product the annuitant chose.
Imagine if your IRA was in
stocks and they went down be-
fore your planned retirement
date or even after you retired,
with a properly structured an-
nuity your income would be
unaffected in any negative
way! In fact, it could be greater
than what you anticipated dueto the guaranteed increasing
income base language of the
annuity. The female TV orator
never discusses this preemi-
nent annuity feature. Every
annuity offers a declining sur-
render charge that once con-
cluded never re-appears like a
CD every anniversary. Further,
annuities offer a degree of
penalty free access during the
surrender charge period which

Its the season for holiday
hustle and bustle and
shoppers are seeking the
perfect gifts for friends and
family members. When given
the choice of gifts, statistics
show that clothing purchases
and accessories top the list of
the most popular, garnering 58
percent of the gifting share.Instead of choosing what-
ever first catches their eye on
the racks, holiday shoppers
may want to follow the expert
advice of a renowned clothing
designer to ensure their gifts
are well received this season.
Toula is a family-owned
and run clothing line that has
been designing versatile and
timeless womens knitwear
since 1986. Founded by Eddieand Ming Wang, Toulas reins
have since been taken over by
Steven Wang, the couples
son. Offering sophisticated
designs that are fashionable
yet always comfortable, Toula
focuses on career-driven sep-
arates that can be easily com-
bined to build a sophisticated,
fashion - forward wardrobe.
Steven Wang shares his
expert advice and guidance to
shoppers thinking of giftingwith clothing this holiday
season.
Q:What trends are in style for
2011?
A:There are many different
interpretations of styles con-
tinuing through the winter,
which began in fall. Lace ruf-
fles and bows have taken on a
multiple season lifespan along
with bold hardware and fin-
ishings (pearls). Womensfashion has been inspired by
60s-era jackets and mixed
prints.
Q:Are certain colors in this
season?
A:For colors, dainty neutraland citrus bright colors com-
pete for the most popular
trend in the Toula collection.
This seasons colors
also consist of mod-
ern metallic and neu-
trals. Pale blue and
bold reds are two
other must-have col-
ors for this season.
Q:What clothing items
should gift-givers lean
toward when holidaygifting?
A:Stay classic and
basic for giving gifts
during the holidays,
especially when it
comes to clothing. In
general, most woman
have their own sense
of style and can be in-
timidated when given some-
thing too avant garde or
fashion-forward. My personalfavorite is a basic black jacket
with great trim detail or tex-
tural patterns.
Q:What should shoppers keep in
mind when choosing clothing for
gift-recipients?
A:When buying clothing, try
to have a good understanding
of the persons body shape so
that you can really pick out a
piece that accents his or her
style and keeps the person
feeling great! Remember, theholidays are a time for giving,
so keep in mind what the per-
son you are buying for likes
and dislikes.
Q:What clothes are good for thin
figures, full figures?
A:Many people have the mis-
conception that thin individu-
als are able to wear almost
anything. It actually can be
difficult to find the perfect
styles for thin figures. Slim fig-ures look good in ruffles and
accents. Cinched waist and
bold contrast looks great on
this body type, too.
Having a full figure does-
nt mean a person cant wear
fashion, it just means they
should wear fashions that flat-
ter their assets. A boat neck
and shoulder pads (almost all
of our styles incorporate shoul-
der pads) can help keep the
upper body proportioned. Ilove the mix of silks and knit
suiting together for this body
type! As difficult as it once
was to find designers creating
styles for fuller-figured women,
things have taken a drastic
turn for the better. With Saks
(and other retailers) investing
a large interest in this depart-
ment, and introducing design-
ers such as Chanel, YSL,
Dolce & Gabanna, and Toula, there have been big strides
made for special-size shopping

It is not uncommon to see
an athlete get hurt on the
field, court, or mat during
competitive athletics. It
seems most of us are familiar
with the initial signs of in-
flammation of an acute injury
and even the tape or wrap
that is applied to an athletes
injury during the initial heal-
ing phase. However, there is
more to an injury then get-
ting through the initial stages
of RICE (rest, ice, compres-
sion, and elevation). During
this healing phase many
things may be happening to
the muscles, tendons, liga-
ments, and in some instances
bone, that can increase the
athletes chance of re-injury
with all future participation.
Conversely, the cause of the
initial injury may have been
due to a weak link in the
muscular chain of events that
occurs with activity. Both the
initial injury as well as the
weak link needs to be eval-
uated and corrected before a
safe return to play occurs.
Returning to play needs
to be a well thought out plan
as well as a step by step
process to ensure the athletes
safety. Providing the athlete
with home exercises or addi-
tional conditioning is always
a good idea. These exercises
are to be done in addition to
the sport specific condition-
ing to ensure additional
strength or flexibility is pro-
vided to injured area or the
weak link that may have
caused the injury.
How do we know when
the right time is to reintro-
duce the athlete to play? This
is in fact the most important
component in rehabilitation
of an athlete. Athletes need
to be tested for strength, and
flexibility of the injured re-
gion. Beginning with slow
and low intensity sport spe-
cific conditioning/drills be-
fore moving on to more rapid
and higher intensity work is
essential.
Good communication
with the coach is also critical
in every phase of injury. Thisgives the coach the ability to
tailor the training around the
injury thus, not allowing the
athlete to become decondi-
tioned. This will protect the
athlete from future injury as
well. In summary, a good tac-
tical plan with return to play
is helpful for the coach and
benefits the athlete by ensur-
ing a safe return to play.

studying diligently for his certification in Orthopedic ManualTherapy. This training exposed him to the concept ofMaitland Australian therapy, the Maitland Concept is referredto as a concept and not as a technique. Emphasis is placednot on the technique of treatment but on a basic philosophy-a thought and decision making process, involving analyticalexamination and assessment on which treatment decisions arebased.
Matthew has also had the thrill of studying with world-renowned therapists Brian Mulligan and David Butler, furtherexpanding his clinical skills into more diverse orthopedic and

These days the economy
seems to have affected
everyones wallets and
has had us tightening our
budgets. Pet lovers are no ex-
ception. Our pets give us
priceless companionship dur-
ing good and bad times but
people are still looking to cut
costs, even when it comes to
their pets.
Medically, the best way to
cut costs is to focus on preven-
tion. Keeping your dog or cat
in good general health is the
best preventative for expensive
illnesses and conditions that
can be uncomfortable for your
pet and costly for you. Emer-
gency visits at night or on the
weekend can be the most ex-
pensive and can be avoided
with simple precautions like
keeping your cat indoors and
your dog on a leash and well
fenced.
The first step to
preventative veterinary
care is actually going to
the vet for a physical
exam. This should be
done annually for most
pets and every 6 months
in senior pets (over 7
years of age). These vis-
its can save a lot of time
and money by catching
diseases early and learn-
ing about preventative
care . Thi s includes
heartworm preventative,
flea and tick control,
early detection blood
work and a check-up of your
pets gums, teeth, heart, lungs
and internal organs.
Take that extra weight off
your pet. Overweight pets, just
like people, are more prone to
some very serious health prob-
lems, such as arthritis, heart
disease, and diabetes. Its
much easier to prevent weight
gain with proper diet and exer-
cise than having to get the
weight off, especially when
pets are in their senior years.
The first step is to assess if your
pet is overweight. Your veteri-
narian can assign a body con-
dition score. If a pet is at a
normal weight, you should be
able to feel the ribs easily and
see a waist or hourglass shape
when viewed from above. So,
measure your pets food, mini-
mize treats, and maintain a
daily exercise routine and you
may prevent a costly illness
down the road.
Spay and neuter your
pets. This will have a big
health impact. For females, it
greatly reduces the chance for
breast cancer and prevents py-
ometra (an expensive and po-
tentially fatal uter-
ine infection). For
males, it removes
the chance of testic-
ular cancer and
reduces prostate dis-
ease. It also dimin-
ishes the desire to
wander and try to
escape from the yard, poten-
tially getting hurt.
Be careful with your pur-
chases. Replace things like col-
lars and bowls when necessary
and do so with quality prod-
ucts. One good collar is better
than a lot of trendy ones that
they can escape from.
Make sure your home is
hazard-free. Routinely inspect
your home for pet hazards and
toxins. Food hazards include
raisins, xylitol (artificial sweet-
ener) containing products and
chocolate. Poisonous house-
plants such as lilies should be
removed.
Consider pet insurance.
The plans are different; some
include routine visits or just
emergency visits. Therefore,
research for the plan that best
suits your needs. Accidents
and major procedures can be
costly and pet insurance is one
way to help defray some of the
burden.
Times are tough but dont
let your pet suffer down the
road by not preventing some-
thing small today.

makes principal access fast and
easy. As far as safety is con-
cerned, insurance companies
that offer annuities must insure
their obligations $1 for every
$1 of deposit, whereas banks
only need to back each dollar
with about 3. Everyone
knows that the FDIC insures
each depositor up to $250,000
this year, but did you ever ask
yourself how long the FDIC
has to pay me back if the bank
with my money fails? The an-
swer is: As long as it takes
and as you also know there is
no guarantee of interest.
I mentioned above that
there were three different annu-
ities, the TFA that is company
declared interest generating, the
FIA that is interest generating
based on a formula tied or
linked to a stock market index
like the S+P 500 and the VA
which is purely based on the
performance of the manage-
ment companies selected simi-
lar to mutual funds. With the
addition of a living benefit rider
that offers an enhanced income
base and income guaranteed for
life, in my opinion, there are no
similar or competing alterna-
tives for a portfolio geared to
providing an ample retirement
regardless if you are preparing to
or are already retired. Its worth
investigating all of your options
to find the right series of annu-
ities for your particular situa-
tion. Each of the three
annuities discussed provide
their own uniqueness, that
when combined, offer an in
penetrable force to complement
any portfolio. Because of the
sheer volume of products and
information, client mistakes in
selection and application of
benefit programs is common.
The best advice is to work with
a professional specifically
knowledgeable in the area of
annuities. Some financial advi-
sors have received advanced
training with annuities and
have received the C.A.S. desig-
nation from the Institute of
Business and Finance, Certified
Annuity Specialist, demonstrat-
ing proficiency in the under-
standing and use of annuities in
the financial planning process.
Should you have any ques-
tions relating to your annuity or
an advisor that recommends
one to you, before signing the
contract or application, a free
consultation is available to all
Life and Leisure Readers simply
for the asking, by referencing
this article when calling to

half-way homes that house
abused women and children
who have left dangerous situa-
tions can typically make good
use of noncash donations and
accept them willingly.
Donate blood. Blood banks
are often in short supply. Blood
supplies typically diminish dur-
ing natural disasters or storms
and need donors are needed to
help replenish suppl ies. Type O
blood is the universal blood
type and can be transferred to
anyone. Those with Type O
negative blood are really in de-
mand because their blood do-
nations are vital for accident
victims and babies needing
transfusions. Only about 7 per-
cent of the population has
Type O negative blood, ac-
cording to the American Red
Cross.
Give your time. Many differ-
ent organizations are under-
staffed and can always use the
helping hands of volunteers.
Check with organizations in
your area to see if any need
some extra help. Also check
with a son or daughters school.
Some schools can use volun-
teers in the library or other
special curriculum classrooms
where staffing has been re-
duced because of budget cuts.
Offer free services. Profes-
sionals, such as accountants,
attorneys, teachers, and tutors
can donate their services to
others, especially those who
are unable to afford them in an
unstable economy.
Raise awareness. You can be
the mouthpiece for an organi-
zation or special agenda. Either
spread the word door-to-door,
draft letters or make public
speeches.
There are many benefits
to making financial donations.
But donating time, services or
belongings are additional ways
to make a difference.
For well over half a cen-
tury, Cathedral Choir
has been performing
George Friederick Handels
majestic oratorio Messiah.
This time honored classic
is perhaps the best known and
well loved of all the sacred
Christmas music and for
good reason. The genius of
Handel combined with a mes-
sage which transcends the
music is captivating, enlight-
ening, inspiring, uplifting,
and fills one with a sense of
wonder at the truths it so
powerfully proclaims.
Please join Cathedral
Choir along with tenor Clin-
ton Ingram, soprano Julie
Weston, baritone Raymond
Jaramillo McLeod & mezzo-
soprano Linda Thompson
Williams accompanied by the
American Chamber Orches-
tra conducted by Robert F.
Davis for the 68th rendition
of Handels Messiah.
The concert will take
place on Saturday, December
3rd, 2011 at 7:30 PM at

Q:How can gift-givers shop de-
signer without spending a for-
tune?
A:My best advice would be to
get basics and build, such as
valuable, timeless pieces that
will stay in style season after
season. Toula designs a collec-
tion that has a consistent
black, which means that in 10
years the same Toula black
basic you get today will match
the new black jacket that
comes out.
Many department stores
are offering designer collec-
tions at reasonable prices. In
addition to smaller boutiques,
Toula collections are now
available at select Dillards De-
partment Stores throughout
the U.S. I have received many
requests from women to bring
the collection to their area,
and Dillards is the perfect
platform for us to reach our
loyal customers and grow with
new fans.

The joys of the holidays
are many: Sharing
eggnog, exchanging
presents, trimming the tree,
contacting the police to report
a robbery. The last one cer-
tainly isnt a joy, but its an all-
too common reality of the
season. But the holidays arentthe only times that home
break-ins take place. Theres no
telling what goes through the
minds of thieves, and preparing
for any situation is the way to
avoid loss due to theft.
In the U.S., a home is
robbed every 14.6 seconds, and
the average dollar loss per bur-
glary is $2,119, according to
the Federal Bureau of Investi-
gation. Statistics Canada offers
that break-ins are not only the
most serious type of property
crime committed in Canada, but they are also one of the
most common. In 2009, there
were more than 205,000 break-
ins reported to the police, ac-
counting for 15 percent of all
property crimes.
Despite burglaries being
down overall in numbers in
both the U.S. and Canada,
homeowners can still be dili-
gent in their efforts to prevent
break-ins and property loss.
Here are some strategies for
thwarting would-be thieves.
Break down cardboard boxes.Theres no better way to tell
thieves about all the new pres-
ents you received than by ad-
vertising them at the curbside.
Burglars will see that empty tel-

stead, cut up the boxes and
bundle them with newspapersso they are inconspicuous.
Lock every door and window
all the time including the
garage. Many people fail to re-
alize that the garage presents a
great point of entry to the
house, one that is private and
away from the eyes of con-
cerned neighbors. Once inside
the garage, a thief can use tools
in the garage to pick at the
lock on an inside door to thehome.
Forget about hiding keys.
Thieves know about all the
places homeowners hide spare
keys. Youre not fooling any-
one with faux rocks or a key
taped over the door. If youre
prone to forgetting your keys,
leave a spare pair with a trusted
neighbor instead.
Dont advertise your status on
social network sites. You maybe excited to share your vaca-
tion adventures with friends,
but posting pictures of your va-
cation or telling others about
when youre planning to leave
the house can be dangerous.
Even if you have your security
settings locked down to only
friends, the fewer people who
know about your whereabouts
the better. Your list of 200
friends may not be the closestfriends anymore.

thiefs best friends. Being able
to hide behind shrubs to jimmy

the PAL Building, PAL Drive,
Wayne, NJ beginning at 1:00
P.M. Coffee is served after each
regular meeting and members
enjoy an afternoon of fellow-

the year, certain meetings host
special speakers, and bingo is
played for only GACW mem-

tary, 973-633-9941, or come to
her from others who may wit-
ness suspicious activity. Keep
landscaping neat around door-
ways and windows, and
promptly replenish any
burned-out bulbs.
Dont give burglars easy ac-
cess. Leaving ladders or items
that can turn into steppingstools enables thieves to reach
any window or door of the
house even upstairs win-
dows that may be unlocked.
Keep things out of easy view.
Some people love the open
look of drape-free windows.
However, giving outsiders a
clear view of the interior of
your home can set you up for
trouble, as it gives thieves a
view of your valuables. Closethe blinds after dark and espe-
cially when youre leaving the
home for a time.
There are many tactics to
take to help protect your home
and belongings from being
stolen. Employ these tips dur-

Part of the enjoyment of
the holiday season in-
volves spending time in
the kitchen whipping up deli-
cious treats. Particularly for
young children, baking sugar
cookies with Mom or Dad and
then decorating the creations
can be a festive way to spend a
day.
This recipe for rolled
sugar cookies produces cookiesthat will hold up well to cut-
ting and baking. Theyre also
quite delicious.
Rolled Sugar Cookies
(Makes 5 dozen)
112 cups butter, softened
3 cups white sugar
4 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
5 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt1. Cream together the butter
and sugar in a large bowl until
smooth. Beat in the eggs and
vanilla.
2. Mix the dry ingredients to-
gether and add to the wet in-
gredients until incorporated.
Cover and refrigerate the
dough for at least one hour.
3. Preheat the oven to 400 F.
On a surface coated with some
confectioners sugar, roll out
the dough to between 1/4 and
1/2 inch thickness (a thinner
cookie will be crispier). Cut out
shapes with a cookie cutter.
4. Line a cookie sheet with
parchment paper. Place cook-
ies 1 inch apart on the parch-ment.
5. Bake around 5 to 7 minutes,
or just until the edges of the
cookies start to brown. Remove
promptly from the cookie sheet
and cool on a rack.
6. Decorate the cookies using
icing (recipe below) when the
cookies cool, or sprinkle with
colored sugar while cookies are
warm.
Cookie Icing(Covers 1 dozen cookies)
1 cup confectioners sugar
2 teaspoons milk
2 teaspoons light corn syrup14 teaspoon almond extract
Assorted food coloring
1. In a small bowl, stir together
confectioners sugar and milk
until smooth. Beat in corn
syrup and almond extract until
icing is smooth and glossy. If
icing is too thick, add more
corn syrup.
2. Divide the icing into sepa-
rate containers to add choice
of colors. Mix until well
blended.
3. Use a piping tip and pastry
bag to outline the cookie in athin bead of the icing. Allow
to dry.
3. Then use a paintbrush to fill
in the design with the remain-
der of the icing.
4. Wait an hour or more for the
icing to completely harden be-
fore serving.
Note: Gel colors found in
craft stores in the cake decorat-
ing aisle produce deep colors
with little product necessary.Theyre also less likely to thin
out icings than liquid food col-
oring.
