    From CompostTo KindlingBy Tresa Erickson

You have spent many aday raking up pine needlesand pinecones, but youwouldnt have it any otherway. You love your pinerees, despite all of the workhey create. While you

generally set the pineconesaside to use for compostingover time, a friend hassuggested you take an

alternative route this yearand turn them into kindlingfor your fireplace.

When dried out, pinecones make greatstarter for fires. You maytreat them with variouschemicals in order toproduce various coloredflames. You may use tablesalt to create yellow flames, salt substitute to createpurple flames, and allum tocreate green flames. Youmay use strontium chloride

or boric acid to create redflames.

To treat pinecones, soakthem in half a gallon of hotwater with a cup of thechosen chemical for eighthours. Remove them usingtongs and let them dry onpaper towels for three days.Separate the pinecones bychemical treatment andburn them two to three at atime. Dont burn any morethan that or mix chemicaltreatments. It could cause adangerous reaction.

    If chemically treating

pinecones does not appealto you, you could createscented pinecone kindling. To do this, fill a spray bottlewith water and 20 drops ofcinnamon essential oil.Spray the pinecones andstore them in a garbage bagfor 24 hours. Remove themand use them as kindling, burning two or three at atime.

Put your old pinecones togood use this year. Turnthem into kindling for yourfireplace and for others. Filla few baskets with them andgive them to your friends asgifts.

    Restore YourHome: Restore

That LawnBy Sam EricksonYouve repaired the

crown molding. Youvegotten the electric work upto code. Youve made thehardwood floors shine.Whats left? Old homesmean old lawns, and yourhome wont be fully restoreduntil you fix that old lawn.Old lawns often have thesame problems that oldhouses do. Rarely does ahomeowner take better care

of the lawn than they do ofthe home. As you areupdating or restoring yourhome, dont forget aboutrestoring your lawn.

The major problemthat occurs with old lawns issoil compaction. If your soilsare heavy in clay, soilcompaction could be aparticular problem. If the soilis compacted, the roots inyour lawn wont be able tobreak through the hardenedlayer and grow deep, whichwill prevent them fromaccessing nutrients andwater and allow them to dryout more easily. To get rid of

that compaction, youll needan aerator, which you canrent from many locations. Itwill pull soil plugs out of theyard and allow air into thesoil.

Aerating is the firststep, but its not the last. Ifthe lawn is patchy, you willwant to reseed it. There areseveral ways you can goabout this. One of the bestis with a slit seeder, whichwill cut small holes into thelawn and drop the lawnseeds into them. For grassto grow from seed, it musthave good contact with thesoil. Roughing up the soil

with a gardening fork orhard rake will also helpprovide some of thatcontact. When buying theseed, make sure you get avariety that will thrive in yourlocal climate.

If the lawn is too fargone, you may have toresod it. This can beexpensive, but it is easywork. Sod is ordered by thesquare foot, so figure outhow much yard you haveand head to your local lawnsupply store. Lay out therolls of sod in an interlockingpattern like decking, sowater wont run off. Make

sure you give the yard agood watering and stay off itfor several days after youput down the sod.

When your lawn hasstarted, be sure to water itfrequently to help the seedsor sod take root. Keep thegrass at a reasonable heightso it wont choke out thenew seeds. There is somehard work to be done to getyour lawn in good shape, but it will be rewarding in theend. Once your lawn isestablished, it will be apleasure for years to come.

    Clean Smarter,Not Harder

By Travis McGlassonStudies show that the

average American, if givenan additional hour a day, would use that time toclean. Seem hard tobelieve? Thats because itis. Lets be honest. We allknow that occasionalcleaning is necessary and

we all take part in it fromtime to time, but the less wedo it, the better. To minimizethe time engaged in one ofyour least favorite activities, here are some tips.

    Read the InstructionsMost household cleaners

typically have oneinstruction in common: to letit sit on the applied surfacebefore cleaning. Take thattime, usually a few minutes,

to work on another task. When you return, youll beamazed at how much moreeffective the cleaner is andhow little effort you have toexert to wipe down thesurface. This is especiallytrue in the kitchen wheregrime can become caked onsurfaces and left for hoursto harden.

Improve Your ReachUnless you have the

reach of gold medalswimmer Michael Phelps, there are probably a fewplaces in your home youcant get to on your own.Whether its the corner ofthe ceiling, a ceiling fan orlight, or the top of a cabinet,

you probably have to takethe time to pull out astepladder to get the jobdone. If you have more thanone hard-to-reach location, you likely have to drag thatladder around the house. Not only is that timeconsuming, but climbing upand down the ladder can bedangerous. Take that ladderand trade it in for anextension pole. Telescopic

poles can be found at mosthardware stores and willallow you to reach all ofthose difficult places whilekeeping both of your feetfirmly planted on theground. You can also usethe pole for painting andother home maintenancetasks.

Create a PlanHave you ever walked

into a room and forgot whichpart you cleaned and whichyou hadnt? If you have, then you know howfrustrating it can be to wastetime re-cleaning. You canavoid this kind of mishap by

creating a cleaning plan inadvance. This plan willinclude not only how tomove from room to room butalso how to move across aroom. It is also helpful toplan ahead for your nextcleaning session byensuring all of your cleaningequipment is in workingorder and stored in onelocation.

Follow these tips andyoull find plenty of free timeto use on activities youactually enjoy! Good luck!

    The Value OfComposting

In the kitchen, I keep aseparate bin (with tight lid)to collect vegetable and fruitscraps. Every other day, Itake them out for

    Squeak! Squeak!Your Stairs

    Need Attention.By Sam Erickson

Whether youre sneak-ng out for a midnight driveor just downstairs for a mid-night snack, the squeakystair tread can be a demon, giving away your intentionsto everyone one in thehouse. Squeaky stair treadscan also be a sign ofunderlying instability, so inyour home restoration pro-

jects, dont forget aboutmaking safe, stable, quietstairs. Sometimes stairssqueak because of a settl-

ng foundation, bad con-struction or simple use overime.

There are several waysyou can fix a squeaky stair.Go with the one most usefulfor you. You can simply nailhe tread into the runner

below. For this, you willneed someone to stand onhe floor by you. Drill two

small pilot holes just overhe squeaky spot and use

8d nails to hold the treaddown. Dont forget tocountersink the nails and fill

    the holes. For more security,

you may screw down thetread. Drill your pilot holesover the riser and applyparaffin or soap to the holes. This will allow for easierturning. Countersink thescrews as well and usedowels made from the samewood as your tread. Sand tocomplete.

If that doesnt sound likeit will work for you, you canwedge the tread from aboveor below. Remove the covermolding under the treadright at the riser and insert aknife into the joint. You willneed a sharply taperedwedge or shim. Simply drive

the wedge underneath thetread with a hammer anduse a utility knife to cut offthe excess. Reinstall themolding and your stair willbe as good as new. If youcan get underneath thestairs, you can simplytighten the existing wedgesand drive in new wedgeswhere needed.

If you do have access tothe underside of the stairs, you can install shelfbrackets underneath. Thiswill connect the tread with

    plan ahead and beprepared.

To get started with in-dividual projects, make yourlist and check it twice beforeheading to the local hard-ware or home supply store. If you have several projectsin mind, think about whatyou will need for all of those. If you can afford it, you canactually save money bybuying in bulk. A notebookwith products, prices andavailability will serve youwell as you move throughyour project. You can also

use this notebook to takedown advice you get fromexperts or sketch out whatyou are looking for at thestore.

You may be able to do aseries of smaller jobsyourself, but you may haveto hire a general contractorfor larger jobs. Doing the jobyourself can save youmoney in the long run, but itmight lead you to morehassles. Contractors aremore able to deal withproblems that might beunforeseen. A good con-tractor can be hard to comeby, so be sure to get good

references. Heres whereyour planning, vision andnotebook will really come inhandy. Youll need these toconvey your true vision tosomeone else. Take notesand write down everythingyou and the contractoragree to.

Knowledge is key todoing a great job of yourhome restoration. Whetheryou hire a contractor or do ityourself, you want tomaintain your vision and do

    CompanionPlanting

    By Leigh MaisenbacherCompanion planting has

become popular withlandscaping aficionados, butyou dont have to be aprofessional to use it.Following are some tips onusing companion planting

You will definitely needsome ground cover, andsquash and pumpkin vineswork well for this. Thesetypes of vines shade the soilbeneath taller plants, whichhelps keep the soil tempera-ture regulated. Anotherbenefit to using squash andpumpkin vines as groundcover is that they serve as asort of mulch, suppressingweeds. These types ofcover crops help fix nitrogen

Instead, my family and Iwent to the neighborshouse across the street, woke them up and calledthe fire department fromthere. They got there quicklyand shut off the gas supply. The culprit was a faulty jointin a gas supply pipe justpast the meter, which wasquickly repaired the nextday by a specialist who alsochecked out the entiresystem.

Please tell your readersto have an emergency planready in case they have toquickly evacuate the house, and make sure your kids, even the youngest ones, know it. Im really proud ofmy wife and kids, who gotup with hardly any questionsand got out of the housewith just their pajamas andslippers on during a coldnight. But Im still going over

the incident in my head tothink of ways to get outsafely, or even better, toprevent this situation fromhappening again. Hopefullymy experience can helpothers. -- James G.,

    Amherst, Mass.DEAR JAMES: Thanks

so much for relating yourexperience! Im gladeveryone was OK. This is away of sounding a wake-upcall to readers who haventthought much lately abouthome safety. An evacuationplan is a must, as isregularly checking carbonmonoxide and smoke

detectors to make suretheyre working properly, keeping fire extinguisherswithin easy reach nearareas of open flame (like the

    ProtectingStone

    FoundationsBy Sam Erickson

One of the least-knowndevelopments in WWI wasconcrete. Before then, mosthomes were built with astone foundation. If you ownan older home or areconsidering buying one, check out the foundation. If

ts made of stone, you willhave to perform regularmaintenance to preventfuture problems.

Sloping floors andcracked plaster are goodsigns that there might beproblems with your founda-ion. Even if these visible

signs arent present, youshould still conduct a closenspection of your founda-ion. Do a visual inspection

of the interior and exterior ofyour foundation. If you seecrumbling or bowing, youknow you are in trouble. These will need to berepaired by a quality mason.

Foundation issues are notsomething that the averagedo-it-yourselfer can handlebecause they requirespecialized knowledge andools. If theres no evidence

of this, you can probablyhandle the repairs andmaintenance yourself.

A mortar coating on thenterior of a foundation isstandard. It helps hold thestones in place, serves as amoisture barrier and makeshe basement look good. It

will flake off over time and

will need to be repointed. Ifnot, the mortar between thestones may fall out andallow the stones to shift.Refill the voids as soon asyou see them. You can useprepackaged mortar for theinterior, but you will wantsomething softer for theoutside mix. If you con-sistently need to repoint, trydoing a complete top coat-ing. The point here is just tokeep everything functioning;unless youre a trainedmason, you probably wontbe able to make it lookspectacular.

Repointing demon-strates you have some kindof underlying moisture pro-blem, and you will have toaddress this sooner or later. The most important thing is

to keep the water outside ofthe house draining awayfrom your foundation. Allpatios and walkways shouldslope away from the founda-tion. Gutters should bemaintained so that watercan flow properly away. Some people advocate forwaterproofing systems, butthey can be expensive andcostly. If you are consistent-ly repointing in one area, check the exterior of yourhouse in order to assessyour problem.

If you have to have thatturn-of-the-century house, studying the foundation andunderstanding the work thatit will require is essential. You will have to do somework, perhaps on a regularbasis, but there is nothing ina stone foundation toprevent you from living in agreat house.

    Safety FromGas Leaks

    By Samantha MazzottaDEAR HAMMER: I

wanted to relate a story thatyour readers might findhelpful. Last month, in themiddle of the night, I wokeup to the very strong smellof gas throughout myhouse. I immediately goteveryone up and told themto get out of the house. Allthe burner controls on mykitchen stove appeared tobe in the off position. I didnt

try to turn off the gas at themeter because it is locatedin my basement and the gasodor was so strong I wasworried about an explosion.

in the soil, which benefits allplants in the area. Sincemost animals dont care forthem, they can also serveas a repellant for peskycritters. Isnt that great?

Corn can be used as acompanion plant if you want

to include more edibleplants in your landscape.Corn is a great companionplant due to its height andsturdiness. It can be usedas a trellis for climbing vinessuch as pole beans. If youdont want tons ofvegetables, you can alwaysuse tall, sturdy flowersinstead of corn to get thesame effect.

If you have a problemwith Japanese beetles inyour yard, youll be glad toknow that there are somegreat plants that work wellfor companion planting aswell as for repelling insects.

Tansy, white geraniums, rueand four oclocks are allgreat flowers that will helprepel insects. You wontwant to repel all insects, however. Bees are definitelyneeded to help pollinateyour landscaping. To ensureyour garden will be visitedby the little buzzing friends, you should include someplants in your garden thatbees like. A few good onesare wild bergamot, cloverand lavender. Lavender canalso be dried and usedinside your home as well.

If you find that you arereally interested in compan-

ion planting, you may wantto do some research on thesubject. There are manytypes of plants and vege-tables that work great forthis. Some, when plantedcorrectly, can even be usedin place of pesticides tokeep other plants pest free.Get out there, do a littleresearch and plant thatpest-free, insecticide-freecompanion garden today!

In most cases, you will probably beinstructed to blot up whatwas spilled with a cleanwhite towel. Dont use acolored towel; the dye couldbleed onto the upholsteryand stain it permanently.

Dont rub the spot either;this will only embed thestain into the fibers.

    Maximize Every InchBy Tresa Erickson

Live in a small space and feel like the walls arestarting to close in on you with all of your stuff? Purgedeverything you can during your spring cleaning and stilllack storage? No problem. Here are some ways to addstorage to your space and make the most of it.

Use storage bins and baskets. Boxes break andcrumble; storage containers, on the other hand, are sturdyand stackable. Some are even made specifically for itemsand feature convenient storage cubes. Storage containesnot only keep items in good condition but take up far lessspace. A slim wire caddy will hold your spice packetsbetter and take up less room in the cabinet than a pile ofloose packets.

Get creative. Look beyond the basics-closets anddrawers-for storage space. Slide that extra painting behindthe sofa, hang that collection of straw hats in the foyer andslip those remote controls in a basket in the entertainmentcenter.

Make storage space. Hang a curtain across that nookfor an instant closet. Raise your bed on casters and slidelong, narrow containers with out-of-season clothing

underneath it. Cover some shoeboxes with fabric and slipyour photos inside.

Hang items when possible. Purchase a pot rack foryour pots and pans. Find a wire shelf for your spices andhang it on the back of a cabinet door. Add some floatingshelves in your living room for family photos.

Purchase furniture that offers storage options or

serves multiple purposes. Replace your ottoman withstorage cube ottomans and your TV cart with a smallarmoire with drawers. Add an old dresser in your diningroom to store your linens and serve as a sideboard duringparties.

These are just some of the ways in which you cancreate more storage in your small space. Once you havemade the best use of the space you have, you can take ita step further and design each area to make it appearlarger than it is. Tuck in some mirrors on the walls and inthe backs of shelving to reflect more light and create theillusion of more space. Trade dark wall colors for lightershades, which will make the area seem airier and larger.Rearrange the furniture to create ample flow through thearea. Make the space feel as big as possible, and thosefeelings of being cramped are sure to disappear.

    Clean UnderfootBy Tresa Erickson

Pick up any cleaning guide and one of the first tipsyoull come across is to clean a room from top frombottom. Any dust stirred up will fall to the floor, where it willbe cleaned up last. Unfortunately, by the time most peopleget to the floors, they are exhausted, and rather than doany deep cleaning there, they just sweep and mop orvacuum. While sweeping and mopping might pick up mostof the dirt from tile, linoleum and hardwoods, the samecannot be said of vacuuming the carpet. The vacuumcleaner may pick up any loose dirt in the carpet, but it willnot remove much of the packed-in dirt. For that, you willwant to look into deep cleaning the carpet.

You can hire a professional to clean your carpet, or

you can do it yourself with a steam cleaner. Professionalcarpet cleaning can be expensive, but it will save you timeand labor. For an additional fee, you may be able to havea chemical protectant applied to the carpet to protect itagainst future stains.

Should you decide to tackle the job yourself, you maypurchase a carpet cleaner or rent one. The latter will costless; however, if you intend to clean your carpet regularly, you might want to look into buying your own steamcleaner. Either way, you will need the appropriate cleaningsolution.

Before you begin cleaning your carpet, you shouldtest it for colorfastness. Grab a white towel, apply somecleaning solution to it and gently press it onto aninconspicuous area of carpet. Remove the towel. If it isclean, you are good to go. If it has traces of the carpetcolor, the carpet is not colorfast and you should consult aprofessional.

If the test for colorfastness comes out fine, you canstart preparing the carpet for cleaning. Remove as muchfurniture from it as possible and place small pieces ofplastic underneath the legs of the pieces that remain. Thenvacuum the carpet and pretreat any stains, following themanufacturers instructions on the cleaning solution.

When ready to use the carpet cleaner, read themanufacturers instructions, insert the cleaning solutionand turn on the machine. Move slowly over the carpet,

using long strokes. Try not to stay in any one area toolong. You dont want to saturate the carpet fibers withcleaning solution.

When you have finished, wipe any cleaning solutionfrom furniture legs and turn on a fan. This will provide forbetter ventilation and speed up the drying time. Stay offthe carpet until it has completely dried.

Thats all there is to it. In just a few hours, you canhave freshly cleaned carpet. To keep it looking its best, vacuum it regularly and clean up spills as soon as theyoccur. Never rub spills. You could damage the carpetfibers and set in the stain permanently. Apply some spotcleaner to a spill, blot it with a clean white towel, rinse itwith water and blot it until dry. For spills involving solids, scrape up as much as possible if moist or break it up if dryand then clean it using the blotting method.

Americana AtIts BestBy Tresa EricksonYou like to shop at flea

markets, and as you walkthrough the booths onweekends, you find yourselfdrawn to objects that reflecta sense of patriotism.Sometimes, its somethingsmall like a red, white andblue pot, while at othertimes its something largeike an old flag. You love allthings Americana and wouldike to decorate one of therooms in your home in thatstyle.

Americana style isextremely versatile. Theraditional theme is patrioticn nature and incorporateshe colors of red, white and

blue. Other themes mayreflect a time in Americanife like the 1950s or aparticular location like theNew Jersey seaboard andfeature colors relating tohat.

If you are going for araditional Americana feel,

you will want to select acolor palette based on red, white and blue. These canbe the actual tones used onhe American flag or more

    subdued tones like maroon,

    beige and light blue. To

prevent the room fromlooking too busy, you shoulduse one color as the baseand the others as accents.

Hardwood flooringmakes as a great backdropfor a traditional Americanroom and adds an air ofauthenticity. Most homesbuilt during colonial timesfeatured wide-planked oakor pine floors. However, forcomfort and warmth, youmay prefer to stick to carpet.

Furnishings for tradi-tional Americana roomsneed not be formal. In fact, simple, unpretentious pieces

are often preferred becausethey reflect the dcor ofhomes during the birth ofthe nation. Whitewashedpieces work well as dohomespun pieces. Antiquesof the time like a spinningwheel or old chair often adda touch of fancy.

With the paint, flooringand furnishings in place, itstime to start loading theroom with accessories.Heres where all of your fleamarket finds will come inhandy. Remember that potand flag you bought? Bringthem in and all of the piecesof Americana you havestashed around your home.

    Place them around the room

    and show off your nationalpride.

Creating an Americanaroom is not hard, and onceyou do it, you may want totake the style farther andincorporate it into otherrooms in your home. Justremember, you dont haveto stick to the traditionalpatriotic room. You canmove into new territory and

create a Floridian paradisein your sunroom or a 50sdiner in your kitchen. Its

    your choice, so have fun!

Are you a proud dogowner? If so, then you knowhow hard dogs can be onthe landscape. In addition todog spots, you may haveworn paths, battered shrubsand flat flowers. These are

just some of the problemsdog owners face.Fortunately, there are somesteps you can take to make

your landscape more petfriendly and have your dogto take less of a toll on it.

You can start by takingyour dog out and studyinghow they use the yard.Where do they play? Wheredo they run? Where do theydig? Where do theyeliminate? If your yard ispacked with plants and yourdog has little room to rompand play, then you mayneed to rethink yourlandscape.

All dogs require areasaway from primelandscaping to play, run and

most importantly, dig. Thesecan be separate orcombined. You couldremove many of the plantsfrom the center of your yard, for example, to give yourdog room to romp and playand allocate an area off tothe side for digging.Whatever areas you set up,keep in mind that your dogwill require some training touse them on a regular basis.

Your dog will also needan area to eliminate. Thisshould consist of shreddedwood or gravel. Again, youwill need to train your dog touse the area, and to reducethe risk of it eliminatingaround single trees orbushes, you may want toplant foliage around them.

Finally, you need tocreate an area betweenyour yard and your backdoor where your dog canwipe its paws and an areawhere they can lie down. Asnoted earlier, you will haveto train your dog to usethese areas.

Along with setting upareas in your yard for yourdog to use, you may also

want to examine the plantsyou have and get rid of anythat are poisonous to pets.Rhododendrons, for ex-ample, are dangerous topets and should beremoved. For further infor-mation regarding poisonousplants, consult a profes-sional.

Creating a pet-friendlylandscape may take somework, time and sacrifice, butonce you see your dogromping around happily in asafe environment away fromyour precious plants, it will

and are used to store nails, tacks, tools and otherequipment. The containersare divided into sections ofdifferent sizes and have aplastic lid that fits tight toprevent the contents fromspilling. Individuals should start by looking at the pieces theywant to hang as a single design element. This elementshould suit the shape and size of the wall and anyfurniture placed on the wall. Tall, narrow walls call for long, narrow artwork arrangements. Large, expansive walls callfor large artwork arrangements. All artwork arrangementsshould be about two-thirds or three-fourths the length ofany furniture pieces beneath it.

When hanging artwork, individuals should work withthe pieces on the floor or paper first. They should arrangeand rearrange pieces until they come up with a designthey like. They can then start hanging the pieces on thewall. For this, they can either take measurements andtransfer them to the wall or create templates of the artworkand hang them on the wall with painters tape. For thosewho are hesitant, the latter method often works better.

Using artwork templates allows individuals to tinkerwith the placement until everything is just right. Then allthey need to do is measure where the hanger or wire is on

the actual artwork, transfer it to the template, sink in a nail, tear away the template and hang the piece. Of course, with odd-shaped pieces, templates may be hard to createand individuals will have to rely on their measuring skills. For the most part, though, using templates makes forfewer errors and holes in the wall to fill and paint.

Hanging artwork right the first time requires a bit ofeffort. Be prepared to put in the time and you will end upwith pleasing results.

    A Green ChoiceBy Tresa Erickson

Do you like the velvety finish you see on many of theold painted pieces you come across in flea markets andantique malls? Have you tried to recreate it, using limewash and other techniques, but werent satisfied with theresults? If so, then you might be happy to learn than milkpaint has made a comeback and is now available in awide range of colors.

Created by the ancient Egyptians, milk paint hasbeen used in some form or another for centuries. Theoriginal formula consisted of milk, earth pigments andlime. Over time, the composition of milk paint evolved, withoils, waxes, eggs and other substances added. Thisresulted in some milk paints that were more durable thanothers. During the Renaissance, an oil-based milk paintwas created. Some liked it, while others preferred the oldwater-based milk paint.

With the development of latex paint in the 1930s, theuse of milk paint faded. It resurfaced again in the 1970swith the start of Earth Day and the need to be moreenvironmentally conscious. Today, with the emphasis ongoing green, milk paint is more popular than ever. Itgenerally comes in powdered form to which water isadded. The application of it is fairly easy.

To apply milk paint to an unfinished piece, you simply

need to sand the surface and apply stain or paint asdesired. When that is dry, you may apply the milk paint.Make sure you brush it on in even strokes. Let it dry andthen sand the surface lightly. Continue adding coats ofmilk paint until you are satisfied with the look, making sureyou sand lightly between each. For a distressed look, sandthe edges of the piece to the original stain or paint color.

Apply a coat of sealer to the piece, let it dry and then applya coat of paste wax, being sure to rub with the grain. Buffthe piece, and you are done.

Milk paint has been around for quite some time. Givethe old favorite a try. You just might create the velvetyfinish you long for.

Are you interested in replacing some of the flooring inyour home with a hip, environmentally friendly product? Then linoleum flooring may be for you. Linoleum? Yes,that product that you used to see in schools, hospitals andother commercial settings has made a comeback and isnow available in a wide array of colors and designs for thehome.

Created by Frederick Walton in the 1860s, linoleum ismade entirely of natural products. Melted tree resin is mix--ed with boiled linseed oil and heated and cooledalternately to form linoleum cement. The cement is then

combined with wood flour, cork dust, ground limestoneand color pigments, heated and applied onto a jutebacking.

Although it is all-natural, linoleum is often confusedwith the synthetic product, vinyl. It is by no means any-thing like vinyl, however. While colored patterns areprinted on the surface of vinyl, the colors of linoleum arelayered throughout it and become more pronounced withage. Linoleum is also less susceptible to heat and will notshow burn marks like vinyl will.

There are many other benefits of linoleum. Because itis made of all-natural materials, linoleum is one of thegreenest flooring products available. It is protected by afactory-applied sealer coat and can be used on counter-tops and backsplashes in addition to floors. Linoleum isallergy-free, water-resistant and easy on the feet. It repelsdust, and costing just $3 to $4 a square foot installed, it isless expensive than most ceramic tile or wood flooring.Linoleum is also very durable, lasting 30 to 40 years insome settings.

Although linoleum offers many advantages, it doeshave its drawbacks. As tile, it can be installed fairly easilyby most do-it-yourselfers. However, the tiles are prone tocurling and warping. Linoleum sheets are better, but theinstallation of these is best left up to professional. Becauselinoleum is so porous, it requires the application of twocoats of acrylic sealer upon installation and one coat everyyear thereafter. Upon installation, linoleum may have ayellow cast and a pronounced scent, which can bothersome people. Fortunately, the yellow cast will disappearover time as the linoleum is exposed to natural or artificiallight, as will the scent of the linseed oil.

Linoleum is like any other flooring product. You mustconsider the pros and cons of it carefully before installing itin your home. Once it is put into place, it will last a long timeand will not be easy to remove, so make certain you wantlinoleum in your home.

    Books, Books EverywhereBy Tresa Erickson

Own a lot of books? Got them stashed here and thereon a few shelves around the house? Gather them alltogether and use them as accessories in your dcor.

Books can be displayed in small groups around theroom or on bookshelves. Many people prefer the latter. However, small stacks of books work really well on tablesto raise the height of lamps and other accessories.Opened to a favorite page, they also make for aninteresting addition to buffets, desks, cabinets and more.

If you prefer to use bookshelves, keep in mind thatthere is an art to displaying books on shelves. Althoughneat, row upon row of books lined together make for abland shelf and do nothing to add to the dcor of a room.

Old, warped bookshelves with sagging shelves do notmake for a pretty sight, so before you do anything, makesure your bookshelves are in good condition. Get rid ofany that have seen better days or repair and paint them. Ifyou need to buy new bookshelves, look for strong, sturdyones with adjustable shelves that wont sag under theweight of heavy books.

When placing yourbooks on shelves, you have a numberof choices for organ-izing them. You cangroup them bygenre, topic orauthor and alpha-betize them by title, which will makethem a snap tolocate. If you areusing the books

purely as accessories, you can organize them by size orcolor for a really unique display. With books that you use alot, make sure you place them on lower shelves for easieraccess.

Bookshelves need breathing room, so be creative inyour arrangements. Line them up in some areas and stackthem in others. Use vases and other unique objects forbookends and insert accessories among books to createinterest. Strive for balance in a wall of bookshelves andconsider inserting some sort of display unit in the middle tobreak up the monotony.

Books make great accessories. Dont overlook thatfact when decorating your home, and keep in mind that ifyou dont have enough books to use as accessories, youcan always purchase some fairly expensively atsecondhand stores, yard sales and flea markets

Toilet's Antics Drive Wife MadBy Samantha Mazzotta

Q: The toilet in our master bedroom, for no reason I canexplain, will randomly start running for a few minutes andthen stop again. Of course, it is accompanied each time bya faint hissing sound as the water flows into the tank andthen a "clunk" when it stops. At night, this is incredibly

annoying. My wife wants it fixed ASAP. Is this somethingthat can be fixed quickly, or do I need to call a plumber? --Hoyt C., Vero Beach, Fla.

A: There's a goodchance you can fix thisyourself. What's happening isthat water is silently tricklingfrom the upper tank into thetoilet bowl. When the waterlevel of the tank drops to acertain point (below the rangeof the float ball or indicator),the inlet valve at the bottomof the tank opens up and thetank refills. Once the waterlevel rises and returns thefloat ball or indicator to its topposition, the valve closes andthe water stops. Often you'll

hear a "clunk" or chain rattleas this happens.

To verify a slow leak, mark the water level at its highestpoint (right after it finishes refilling from a flush) with acrayon, then close the inlet valve under the tank. Comeback in a half hour to an hour to see if the water level hasfallen.

Next, try to locate the cause of the leak. If there's nowater on the floor (indicating bad seals or a cracked tank --a definite contact-the-plumber sign) then the flapper valve -- the big valve in the center of the tank that dumps waterinto the bowl with each flush -- is the likely culprit.

The problem could be as simple as a misaligned flappervalve. This is most commonly caused by a lift chain or liftarm that is too long or too short. (The lift chain or armliterally lifts the flapper valve up when you push the flushhandle -- try it now and see.) Adjust the chain by placingthe connecting hook (the hook that attaches the chain tothe upper lift arm) into a different rung of the chain. Adjust a

vertical lift arm by either slightly bending or straighteningthe arm.If the adjustment doesn't work, consider the age of the

flush assembly. The seals may be breaking down, especially in a hard-water environment. Replacementassemblies can be purchased at your local home-improvement store (be sure to bring the toilet's brand andmodel number with you to get the correct fit).

HOME TIP: Increase the life of your toilet tank seals andflush assembly by avoiding the use of bleach-based, in-tank cleanser tablets.

    The Right CareBy Tresa Erickson

Take a look at the furnishings around your home. Seea lot of different materials, dont you? Your dining room setmight consist of an oak table with cane-back chairs, whilethe side tables in your living room are made of bamboo. Inall likelihood, you probably have some materials otherthan wood in your furnishings, some of which may requiremore specialized care than others. Here is a brief list ofsome common materials used in home furnishings andsuggestions for caring for them.

    BambooTo clean bamboo, all

you need to do is vacuum itand wipe it down with asoft, damp cloth. Be gentlewith dark pieces. You dontwant to ruin their agedpatina.

    CaneTo clean cane, all you

need to do is wipe it downwith a soft, dry cloth. Whileyou are cleaning cane, youshould check for loosecorners and tack themdown. If you discover moresevere damage, you shouldconsult the help of aprofessional.

ChromeTo clean chrome, all you need to do is wipe it down

with a soft, lint-free cloth and some glass cleaner. Shouldyou discover rust on the chrome while cleaning it, treat itwith a metal polish made specifically for chrome.

RattanTo clean rattan, all you need to do is take it outside,

spray it down with a hose and wipe it with a soft cloth. Then blot up all of the excess moisture with a clean clothand move the piece to a shaded area to finish drying outcompletely.

RushTo clean rush, all you need to do is vacuum it to

remove all loose dirt and dust and brush it with a soft, widebrush. For sticky spots, you may use a damp cloth. Donot, however, soak the rush with water. You will damage it.

WickerTo clean wicker, all you need to do is vacuum it to

remove all loose dirt and dust. If needed, you may alsotake your wicker furnitureoutside, spray it downwith a hose and scrub itwith a brush and soapywater. As with rattan, youshould wipe up all excessmoisture from the piece

and allow it to drythoroughly in a shadedarea.

These are just someof the materials that maymake up many of thefurnishings in your home.If you have pieces thatconsist of more thanwood, make sure youknow how to clean andcare for them properly toensure their longevity.

Make Those Floors GlowBy Sam Erickson

Wood floors are beautiful and lustrous and bring an oldworld charm to a home. They also hold light and reallyshine in the sunlight-unless they are stained, molded ormildewed. An important element in many homerestorations, getting your wood floors to shine is often amatter of cleaning rather than refinishing. Different kinds ofstains require different procedures; here is a guide forsome of the most common problems.

In order to keep yourfloors in order, you needsome materials. Steel woolpads of the finest grade willlet you scour the floor. Youwill also need a supply ofmineral spirits and apetroleum distillate, alongwith a floor sealer, solvent-based floor wax and simplehousehold vinegar.

If you have dark spotson the floor, rub the areawith your steel wool pad and mineral spirits. Take a wetrag, dip it into household vinegar, apply it to the stain andallow it to sit for a few minutes. This will lighten the stain. Ifthe stain persists, you can apply a mix of half water andhalf bleach. This will take care of most household stains.Bleach will do to your floors exactly what it does to yourclothes, so be careful not to let it run onto other parts ofyour floor and clean it off quickly when you are done. Youcan use a lower concentration if you are worried aboutcreating other stains.

Watermarks are a whole different story. These areusually a stain in the finish that doesnt carry all the waydown to the wood. Start the application again with steel

wool and apply a paste wax. This will get the finishimperfections out without hurting the wood.

A much tougher problem is grease and oil stains. First, get as much of the material up as possible with cleantowels. Use dry cleaning fluid to draw the stains out. Youwill need to check for progress in the area every fewminutes.

Mold and mildew on your floors can be taken care ofwith a bleach-soaked rag. You can use ice cubes in aplastic bag to get sticky wax or chewing gum off the floor.Simply scrape it off when it has frozen.

Wood floors get dirty. There are some simple steps youcan take using general household cleaners to brighten upyour wood floors and really make them shine. If you havenice, new wood floors, it is important to keep them clean. That way, you wont ever have need of any of thisknowledge.

Wasted ElectricityIt seems there are so many accessories at my computer

like printers, radios, lights, etc. and all were suckingphantom energy because I left them plugged in. Finally, Icorralled all plugs with pipe cleaners and mounted twosurge protecting power strips to a leg of my desk table. Now with a flip of a switch, I turn the strips off.

I also labeled all the cords, so I know what cord goes towhat gadget. I placed two labels. One was placed close tothe power strip and another label was placed midway onthe cord. I got the power strips on sale for $3 each, whichwas a clearance price. I had procrastinated a long timebefore undertaking this chore, but its well worth the effortas I expect my total power bill to go down as I continueplacing power strips throughout my home. S.

Patching Your Old CeilingBy Sam Erickson

Tongue-and-groove ceilings are all the rage these

days. Usually, these appear in older homes built around

the turn of the century. You might have discovered one

underneath an old ceiling when you were doing other

restoration work, or you might have put one up yourself.

Either way, you will need to keep them in good condition.

If there are boards that have dried out over the years,

they may have opened up cracks in the ceiling, which can

allow heat to escape and dust from the attic to trickle

down. It will be hard to completely get rid of the cracks

without ripping the boards down and putting up completely

new boards. However, you may be able to caulk the

smaller gaps. Caulk can be problematic. If you have a

dusty ceiling, it wont adhere well. Caulk can also shrink

over time, leaving you with the same problem. You can

mask larger gaps by inserting plywood strips into your

    ceiling from the attic.

Once youve got the ceiling looking good, youll want to

make it work better for you. This means creating an

effective air barrier between the house and the attic. A

vapor barrier on the warm side will keep air and water out.

Look through your attic thoroughly and check for places

where air might get into the ceiling and plug those up. The

chimney, framing and plumbing and electrical chasms are

good places to look. Using a polyurethane foam to stop up

those gaps will help prevent air leakage. Watch out for

electrical wires, recessed lighting and other gaps.

When youve taken care of all of the little gaps, you are

and will show many imperfections like nicks and dents. High gloss. This reflects the most light of all sheens

and works well in high-traffic areas where surfaces arenon-porous and require cleaning. The mirror-like, high-gloss finish is the easiest to clean. However, it will accentevery imperfection on trim, cabinets, banisters, doorframes, windowsills and frames, and more.

Now that you know more about the paint sheens, youcan select the right one for your needs. Dont forget, themore imperfections in the wall, the more visible they willbe with higher sheens of paint, so in cases like these, stickto lower sheens of paint.

    Bathtub RefinishingBest Left to Pros

By Samantha MazzottaQ: Ive got an old claw-foot tub that looks shabby but

is pretty sound that Id like to install in the bathroom Imremodeling. Id like to refinish it, but am not sure whatmaterials to use or how long it would take. What do yourecommend? -- Jim H., Philadelphia

A: You do have two options: the do-it-yourself refinishor a professional refinish. I may once have espoused theidea that you should tackle a tub refinishing job yourself, but over time have found that I prefer to spend myenergies on other aspects of a bathroom remodel and noton trying to restore tubs and sinks.

With the do-it-yourself option theres the investment inthe right equipment and materials to do the job, andnumerous hours are required to get it done. The tub needsto be scrubbed beyond clean and the surface prepped forthe refinishing medium. Then the finish needs to beapplied properly to avoid streaking or later cracking orpeeling. All of this takes time and care, and youve got towork in a very well-ventilated area -- and still wear aprotective filter mask, particularly when working withrefinishing materials.

Even with all that, the refinish may go poorly and afterhours of work you have a less-than-ideal-looking tub. Witha claw-foot tub, which can add beauty and value to abathroom, you want to really make it look good and last along time.

This is where professional refinishing comes in. Oneof the bonuses of hiring a pro to do the refinish job is thatthis is a pretty competitive service in most areas, withseveral companies vying for your business. So you canget multiple quotes before making the decision to eitherhave a professional handle the refinish, or attempt the jobyourself.

HOME TIP: Always get a written estimate from aprofessional before agreeing to start any refinishing work.

go, but many people are choosing blown-in insulationthese days. It can get inside of those gaps and really raisethe insulation value of your home. Blown-in insulationshould really be done by trained professionals, but youcan unroll fiberglass insulation yourself. Be sure to followyour local energy codes. If you need more information oninsulation, check at your local library or on the Internet.

Tongue-and-groove ceilings are a thing of beauty, andthey can really set your restored home apart while givingyou that period feel. They require a little more time andeffort to maintain, but you dont have to go through a costlyrenovation project to make them work for you.

    Sheen SelectionBy Tresa Erickson

If you know anything at all about paint, then you arefamiliar with the term sheen. It refers to how much lightthe painted surface will reflect. The duller the sheen, theless light it will reflect.

Paint reflects light accordingto the resin contained within it.Generally the more resin thereis, the higher the sheen andthe smoother and more dur-able the finish will be.

    Paint comes in five basicsheens:

Flat ormatte. This reflectsvery little light and works wellin low-traffic areas with ir-

regularities or blemishes on the ceilings and walls. Thesurface diffuses light, disguising imperfections, and is easyto touch up. It is not so easy to clean, however.

Eggshell. This reflects light slightly and works wellfor decorative and faux finishes in areas that receive sometraffic. It has just enough sheen to grip glaze whileallowing it to flow over the surface with ease. Eggshellpaint is more resistant to dirt than flat and can be washed, making it ideal for aluminum and vinyl siding.

Satin. This reflects light somewhat and works wellfor trim and in high-traffic areas susceptible to moisture.Satin paint is often considered the most versatile of allsheens because it is easy to clean and doesnt reveal asmany imperfections.

Semi gloss. This reflects more light than satin andworks well for trim and in heavy-traffic areas that requirefrequent cleaning, like bathrooms and kitchens. Semi-gloss paint reflects more light than other sheens, however,

and work well for peoplewho cant or dont want totry mixing patternsthemselves.

If youre up to it,though, you can mix andmatch patterns yourself. Todo this, you should limityourself to three or four

patterns and select adominant pattern based onsome major element in theroom, like the carpeting, wallpaper or paint color.

After you have selecteda dominant pattern, youshould study it carefully. Is it

plaid, checked, striped orfloral? Is it large scale, medium scale or smallscale? Is it hard or soft?Depending upon theanswers to these questions, you should select two orthree patterns thatcoordinate with the

dominant pattern but vary intype, scale and texture. Ifyour dominant pattern is ahard, large-scale checkedfabric, then you shouldfocus on softer medium-and small-scale fabrics insomething other thanchecks. While you could usetwo checks, you dont wantto go beyond that or you willend up with a busy room.

The one feature thatshould run through all ofyour patterns and makethem a cohesive unit iscolor. They should allfeature one, if not many, ofthe same colors. Youprobably dont want tocombine green checks withbright purple polka dots andblack toile. Not only will theyclash in color, but they willclash in style. The checksmight be more suited tocountry dcor than the othertwo. Be wary of usingpatterns all in the sameexact color. A pale greenroom with pale green stripeddrapes and bedspread anda pale green damask chairmight be a little much.

Once you haveselected all of your patterns, make sure you distributethem throughout the room.Dont pile them together in acorner of the room. Thearea will look busy andoverwhelm the eye. Makesure you incorporate somesolids into your dcor aswell to give the eye a placeto rest.

Coordinating patterns isnot that difficult. It just takessome thought and effort.Remember to limit yourselections to three or fourand make sure they aresimilar in color and style butvary in type, scale andtexture.
