EXHIBITIONS2+2=8: THIRTY YEARS OF HEIDELBERGSeptember 7, 2018 through January 6, 2019

2+2=8: Thirty Years of Heidelberg is a retrospective ode to Guyton’s multi-decade outdoor installation, Heidelberg Project. Initiated in 1986 at the site of Guyton’s childhood home, the project was conceptualized as medicine for Detroit’s east side community following the 1967 rebellion. Over the years the project has evolved to span two city blocks as artistic refuge for locals and visitors from across the globe. Combining painting, sculptural assemblage, and object-based intervention, Heidelberg Project is a cornerstone to Guyton’s robust artistic practice. In Heidelberg Project, Guyton ruminates on urban landscape and familial legacy—creating public works that speak to the possibility of shifting paradigms in which imaginative future and present reality live side-by-side. Using art to blur the boundaries of architectural function and religious philoso-phy, Guyton’s work is a reflection on historical impasse and specula-tive future.

Tyree Guyton was born, raised, and works in Detroit, MI.

2018 GALA ART AUCTION EXHIBITION September 7 through October 12, 2018

Preview artwork from a brilliant array of artists, galleries and collec-tors who show their support for MOCAD by donating works of art to be auctioned during the Museum’s spectacular Gala. This important fundraising event brings top quality contemporary art from around the world to Detroit, and makes it possible for MOCAD to provide exhibitions, educational programs, and events for the community.

PROCESSTrained professionally in the Fine Arts, Process takes us on a journey into the mind of Tyree Guyton and includes drawings and studies that illustrate Guyton’s creative consideration and deepest influences. Work that will be highlighted in Process includes paintings from Guy-ton’s “Faces of God” series: portrait-based works that imagine city dwellers as god—an ever changing entity and philosophy. Referring to his work as living art, Process speaks to Guyton’s relationship with family and community—in particular his grandfather, artist Sam Mackey, who deeply influenced the artist’s practice. Process will present works that speak to the manifestation of the Heidelberg Project and the artist’s archive, including sketches and photographs, all of which lead him to coin the trademarked term, Heidelbergology. Please join us as we dig deeply into Guyton’s creative practice and bear witness to the process of one of the most influential artists of our time. Process opens in conjunction with the Heidelberg Project’s conference, 360° of Heidelberg.

STANDING STILL, LYING DOWN, AS IFOctober 26, 2018 through January 6, 2019

Standing Still, Lying Down, AS IF is a group exhibition that aims to address the artist’s need to engage actively and radically within a framed space. In 2003, Post No Bills, a group exhibition curated by Matthew Higgs at White Columns in New York City, demonstrated artistic oscillations into the frameworks of communication, pro-duction, and distribution by way of a poster. Still using themes of a “poster” and a “wall” on which a “poster” is “placed,” Standing Still, Lying Down, AS IF re-formulates the definition of a poster as a “framed space” in order to bring together a universe of artists whose work reveals, responds to, and interacts with established frame-works, altering our encounters with the routine and predetermined.

In order to expand beyond museum walls, an off-site installation of large scale works on paper accompanies the main exhibition. In partnership with Red Bull Arts Detroit the installation takes place at various locations around Eastern Market neighborhood.

TALKADRIANA RAMIĆ AND PATRICK MEAGHER TALK ABOUT STANDING STILL, LYING DOWN, AS IFFriday, October 26, 6:30pmFree admission ($5 suggested donation)

Join artists Adriana Ramić and Patrick Meagher as they introduce the Standing Still, Lying Down, AS IF exhibition by way of a casual conversation and Q&A discussion with the audience.

Work of Adriana Ramić is embedded in relationships of interpretation and replication that can occur in computer vision and machine learning.

Patrick Meagher’s art explores how the digital age affects us spiritually and emotionally. Working in computer-generated collage, photography, sculpture, and other media, his art asks how humans will evolve in an era of transgressive technology and increasingly virtual interactions.
