The Nativity (Birthday) of Mary Feast day: September 8 (Painting: St. Anne with child Mary) The traditional date for the feast of Our Lady’s birthday is September 8 and occurs exactly nine months after the Solemn celebration of her Immaculate Conception (Dec. 8). Perhaps because of its close prox- imity to the Feast of the Assump- tion of Mary (Aug.15), the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is not celebrated with the same solemni- ty as the Immaculate Conception. It is, nonetheless, a very important feast, because it prepares the way for the birth of Christ. Scripture does not record Mary's birth. The earliest known writing regarding Mary's birth is found in the Proto- evangelium of James (5:2). From it, we learn the names of Mary's parents, St. Anne and St. Joachim, as well as the tradition that the couple was childless until an an- gel appeared to St. Anne and told her that she would conceive. In the Church’s commemoration of Saints, most saints are remem- bered on the day of their death, that is their “birthday into the Lord.” However, in the cases of Mary and John the Baptist, it also celebrates the day of their earthly birth. The reason for this is the singular mission that was theirs in the History of Salvation.
