FOURTH SUNDAY of ADVENT

Divorced and Re-married? If you are divorced and remarried outside of the Catholic Church without a Decree of Invalidity, or if you are married outside of the Catholic Church, you may not partake of the Sacraments, including the reception of Holy Communion. Until it is shown otherwise through the ministry of the Tribunal, no person is free to enter into another marriage without the appearance or occasion of serious sin. A divorce alone would not affect, or hinder in any way, your participation in the Catholic Church. A divorced Catholic is free to receive the sacraments. However, if you are divorced and have remarried, or if you are divorced and in a new relationship, or if you are living with someone without a Decree of Invalidity (and your former spouse is still living) you may not par-take of the sacraments, including the reception of Holy Communion. Consider seeking a Decree of Invalidity which will enable you to return to a full participation in the sacramental life of the Church. For more information contact Deacon Jim Bindel at the Church office at 696-1253.

EMMANUEL, God is with us!

We look forward to hearing about your family’s celebrations

when Religious Education classes resume on Sunday, January 6th.

Our prayer is that God wraps your family in His protective covering & fills you with His

peace, joy, and love throughout the coming year.

When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.”

You recently heard these words of Elizabeth’s, repeated in the special prayer of the Rosary, which your Religious Education Catechists have been teaching you as you studied the “Joyful Mysteries”. Today we want to share the story of why Elizabeth excitedly said those words. Elizabeth was carrying John the Baptist in her womb for he had not been born yet . . . he was still growing inside of her. Jesus also had not been born yet, and he was developing inside his mother, Mary’s womb. Mary came to see Elizabeth. When Mary came into Elizabeth’s house, John the Baptist leapt inside her womb because he knew it was Jesus the Son of God who had just entered the house. Elizabeth was so surprised at John’s leaping inside of her that she knew God was sending her a special message that Mary’s baby was truly God’s special gift of Jesus the Messiah. So, Elizabeth said these words in our prayer acknowledging that she and her son John were in the presence of the Son of God and his Blessed Mother. Blessed Mary had said “yes” to God, and now she carried His Son Jesus. May our hearts leap with joy and our mouths open as we tell others the Good News of Jesus’ birth and how he is with us throughout every minute of every day . . . even into eternity! Family Conversations: ¨ Have you felt a baby brother or sister move inside

your mother before he or she is born? Can you imagine the unborn John the Baptist jumping for joy when he sensed Jesus’ presence?

¨ Do you jump for joy when you get to go to religious education classes and hear the beautiful stories of Jesus and how he is present with us today through the sacraments?

¨ Has it been easy to say yes to God, like St. Mary, by cooperating in God’s plan to help you keep growing in your knowledge and love of God’s Son, Jesus?

¨ Another name for Jesus in the Bible is Emmanuel; it means, “God is with us.” How has your family planned for God “to be with you” throughout this Christmas season?

FOURTH SUNDAY IN ADVENT Here we are, mere days from Christmas, and we hear a Gospel anticipating the birth of another child. Mary has received word that her cousin Elizabeth is with child.

Pregnant as she is, Mary "set out and traveled to the hill country in haste." She has recently received the greatest news of her life - that she is to be mother to the Messiah by the power of the Holy Spirit - but her concern is for her cousin in need. Through God's grace, Elizabeth turns it into an oppor-tunity to honor the coming Christ. "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb." Yet Mary's example of selflessness should inspire us.

As Christmas draws near, there is plenty of goodness to anticipate for many of us. We'll reunite with family and friends, uphold time-honored traditions, swap stories old and new, exchange gifts, and welcome Jesus at the Christmas liturgy. These are wonderful things! Of course, they probably all come with their own to-do list. Shop for last-minute gifts, pick up recipe ingredients, ready the guest room, or pack your own bags. Mary probably had things to do as well. She had a lot to consider, for one thing. How do you plan to tell your parents you're pregnant, but no man was involved? When Joseph finds out, who will care for the practical needs of you and your child? Into what may have been a chaos of questions, Mary receives news that someone is in need. She goes immediately.

In these final days before Christmas, stay watchful and awake! You never know when God might invite you to welcome, hospitality, and compassion. It might be tempting to reject the opportunity for your own needs. Follow the example of Mary! If God is providing you an opportunity to love, He will provide the means to accomplish all your other tasks. This Christmas season, may you too hear, "Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled."
