HEAD COACH BRETT GILLILAND Record setting quarterback and University of West Alabama Athletic Hall of Fame member Brett Gilliland came home on Dec. 9, 2013 to be named the 21st head football coach at his alma mater.

Now entering his fourth season as the Tigers head coach, Gilliland returned to West Alabama from Kennesaw State, where he was coaching quarterbacks. Previous coaching stops include Georgia Tech and Georgia Southern.

Gilliland led the Tigers to a 5-6 record in 2014, his first year back at his alma mater and his first season as a collegiate head coach. He followed the initial campaign with 7-4 records in both years two and three.

Following his playing days at UWA, Gilliland began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Georgia Tech before moving on to the offensive staff Georgia Southern. While at Georgia Tech, Gilliland was a part of three Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Coastal Division Championships (2006, 2008 and 2009).

In 2007, Gilliland worked with Yellow Jacket quarterbacks after assisting with the receiving corps in 2006, including Biletnikoff Award winner and current Detroit Lions star Calvin Johnson. Gilliland coached the running backs for two seasons at Tech, a group that included Doak Walker semi-finalist Jonathan Dwyer. Dwyer was the ACC rushing leader and player of the year in 2008.

In three seasons at Georgia Southern, Gilliland worked with the running backs (2010), tight ends and tackles (2011) and wide receivers (2012). He took over the recruiting coordinator duties following the conclusion of the 2011 season. With Gilliland on staff, Georgia Southern posted a 31-12 (.721) overall record, won two Southern Conference titles (2011, 2012) and made three consecutive NCAA Football Championship Series (FCS) semifinal appearances.

Gilliland was a regional finalist for the Harlon Hill trophy in 2003. He earned all-region recognition from the Football Gazette (2002). He concluded his career as the Tigers’ single-season (3,213) and career passing yards (6,689) record holder.

In 2012, he was inducted into the UWA Athletic Hall of Fame. At the conclusion of his playing career, Gilliland had posted four of the top 10 single game passing performances in school history, including a then school-record 470 yards against Valdosta State in 2002.

A two-time member of the All-Gulf South Conference Academic list, he was a two-time winner of the Asa Green Scholar-Athlete Award, an award presented to the UWA student-athlete with the highest grade-point average on the football team, winning it in 2001 and 2003.

A 2003 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District IV selection, he also was honored twice with a Gulf South Conference “Top Eight” award before graduating magna cum laude from UWA in 2004.

Gilliland and his wife, Amanda, are the parents of a son, Rece (6), and a daughter, Ella Kate (1).

REVIEWING THE 2017 SEASON Week 9 – West Alabama 35, West Florida 18

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The players danced and chanted “Size Me Up” in the postgame locker room following West Alabama’s 35-18 Gulf South Conference football victory over West Florida at Tiger Stadium. West Alabama had just captured at least a tie for the 2017 GSC Championship, its first league title since 2013.

West Alabama took a 14-9 lead at half, trading UWF three field goals for a pair of touchdown passes by Harry Satterwhite.

Satterwhite connected with Donta Armstrong from 9 yards out on the first play of the second period and then found Tra Fletcher for a 15-yard scoring pass with 54 seconds left before the break. VSU’s Austin Williams kicked two 39-yard field goals and one from 22 yards in the second quarter.

The game was decided by the outcome of four red zone possessions by each team. Four UWA trips resulted in touchdowns. Four by UWF resulted in three field goals and a TD.

A 25-yard field goal by Williams was the only points of the third quarter,

Satterwhite found Corey Davis for a 5-yard TD pass to open fourth quarter scoring, while Lakenderic Thomas and Tyler Rogers finished it off with 26 and 1-yard touchdown runs, respectively.

UWF’s only touchdown of the game came on an 8-yard pass from Mike Beaudry to Caleb Robinson with 5:57 left.

West Alabama rolled up 410 yards of total offense to 371 for West Florida. UWA limited the Argos to just 100 rushing yards while the Tigers ran for 220.

Week 8 - Florida Tech 41, West Alabama 39

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Down three points with under two minutes to play, Florida Tech senior quarterback Mark Cato drove his team 78 yards on six plays, scoring the game winner himself on an 11-yard scramble with 51 seconds left as unranked FIT secured a 41-39 upset over No. 18 West Alabama.

The game almost resembled basketball on grass with the way it played out in runs and streaks. West Alabama jumped to a 14-0 lead and then 17-7 before Florida Tech scored 20 unanswered points to lead 27-17 after three quarters. Week 6 - West Alabama 29, Delta State 26

CLEVELAND, Miss. - In a top 25 match-up that featured the top two offenses in the Gulf South Conference, it was the defenses and special teams that were the difference in a 29-26 West Alabama victory.

West Alabama built a 29-10 lead after three quarters, only to see Delta State cut the lead to the final margin before Vince Sciorrotta’s 27-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right with 1:05 left in the game.

Hanging on to a 29-24 lead with 3:53 left, Delta State picked up a safety when a Tiger punt snap sailed over punter Zach Gaines head and out of the end zone. After trading punts, the Statesmen had a chance to send the game to overtime, but Sciorrotta’s miss sealed the deal.

Delta State started fast, picking up 89 yards on its first two drives, but the Tiger defense limited the league’s top rushing offense to just 36 yards on the next seven drives.

The Tigers and Statesmen traded interceptions right before the half. Tevin Madison corralled his third of the year, but DSU returned the favor when Jamoral Graham intercepted Harry Satterwhite to set up 54-yard TD pass from Collin Willis to Willis Chambers to make the halftime score 16-7 UWA.

West Alabama took control of the football game in the third quarter, outgaining Delta State 180 to 42 total yards, only to see the Statesmen outgain the Tigers 148-0 in the fourth period.

Colin Douglas had a 25-yard field goal in the second period. Satterwhite and Tra Fletcher hooked up on a 42-yard scoring pass and Taderion Myhand scooped up a DSU fumble and returned it 23 yards for a TD with 2:42 left in the half.

Tyler Rogers popped a 62-yard run for a touchdown with two minutes gone in the second half to stretch UWA’s lead to 22-10. A 38-yard Sciorrotta field goal and a 1-yard run by Lakenderic Thomas gave the Tigers a 29-10 lead.

Willis scored on a 4-yard run and Sciorrotta kicked two more field goals, from 43 and 32 yards, in the fourth quarter.

The Tigers had 12 tackles for loss and forced three turnovers. UWA lost one fumble.

Colin Douglas kicked field goals of 30 and 26 yards.

Qua Boyd and Broc Malcom both caught four passes and both had their first touchdown catches, Boyd's a 7-yarder from Satterwhite and Malcom's a 73-yard catch-and-run jewel from Gabe Tiller, who was 5-of-7 for 123 yards in relief of Satterwhite.

Terry Samuel had seven tackles to lead the Tigers, including a pair of sacks and a forced fumble. Tavarius Hutchinson and Kejuan Feagan had five stops apiece. Hutchinson caused and recovered a fumble, while Jordan Jones recorded three tackles for loss, including a sack.

Lakenderic Thomas scored on runs of eight and 30 yards to give the Tigers a 24-10 lead at the half and finished the game with 87 yards on 10 carries.

After the lightning delay and an illegal procedure penalty, Bruton connected with Hicks on a 54-yard scoring pass to cut the West Alabama lead to 24-17.

Tevin Madison picked off Bruton early in the fourth quarter and returned it 64 yards for the Tigers' final touchdown, lifting West Alabama to a 38-17 lead. The interception was Madison's second of the season and the third in the game off Bruton.

The Tiger defense forced three turnovers and had seven sacks. Dakota Rushing had 2.5 sacks (-18) and Jordan Jones two more (-18). The Tigers recorded 11 tackles for loss.

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama outgained Mississippi College by just three total yards, but the stat sheet doesn't decide the outcome the way trips to the endzone do.

When the evening at Tiger Stadium was done, West Alabama had made it to the endzone five more times than MC on the way to a 42-13 victory.

West Alabama had 391 total yards to 366 for Mississippi College, but the Tigers blocked two punts, one for a touchdown, and ended the night clearing the bench for the final minutes of the game.

In addition to the two blocked punts, the West Alabama defense forced Mississippi College to turn the ball over on downs three times.

Harry Satterwhite and Donta Armstrong hooked up for the third time in the last two games, this one a 34-yard scoring toss to make the score 21-7 with 2:14 left in the half.
