A Letter from the Director
Friday, July 11- at 1:00 PM Veteran Dan Mahoney will speak to us about his 24
year career with the USAF. In particular, he will
describe his Special Duty Assignment with the Air
Force Academy as a member of the Security Police
Squadron and his various security, law
enforcement, and resource protection
responsibilities. In addition, he will also describe his participation in "The
Cadet Sponsorship Program" at the Academy, which involved providing a
"home away from home" for several cadets. Cadets who complete Basic
Training are assigned to sponsoring families. Dan and his family sponsored
five cadets over a four year period. Dan will bring along memorabilia.
Hi all,
I am following up on my letter from last month about our potlucks. I was able to
share the story of the Senior Center with the May potluck attendees. About 43 years
ago it all began, or so the story is told. The Senior Center started with a group of 2
couples, then 3, 4 and so on. This group would get together at different homes and
share a meal, with each person bringing a specialty dish. As the group grew, the
idea of starting a senior club was formed and so the Senior Club was born. Over
time, as more people became involved and a building was made available, it
became the Senior Center. Potlucks today are still a bright spot each month where
folks have the opportunity to share a meal, have good conversation and enjoy each
food dish and good hospitality provided by our kitchen helpers and volunteers.
I was able to join in the fun this month. I had great conversations and learned about
some of the people I had not met before. I highly recommend this social meal
sharing time. What a great way to meet and learn about your fellow Center
members and guests!
In this newsletter you will see that we have added a little more information about
the potluck on the sign up form on page 19. We have gone back to basics and
reinstated the dish list by alphabet. You will know what type of dish to bring by the
first initial of your last name, and it will be shown right on the sign up sheet. The
categories are main course or casserole, salad or vegetable, side dish, or dessert.
Every month you will have a different type to bring! Bon appetite!
Another change will occur on sign-up day. When you sign in at the Center you will
receive a number, given out in numerical order. If you are signing up a friend or
spouse, you will get 2 numbers. If you call in, you will also receive one (or two) of
the same group of numbers. If you haven’t been to sign-up day lately, you are
missing out! There is so much going on. This new procedure will clarify things
when it gets hectic. We don’t want to take someone out of turn, as we have some
popular activities that fill up fast. We want to be sure that we are signing everyone
up on a first-come first-serve basis and make this process as fair as possible!
- Terry

Do you have a craft you’d like to teach to a group and sell at the Craft Show?
Will you be willing to work on crafts at home to donate to the Craft Show booth?
Will you plan on volunteering on Friday mornings in the months to come to help
make crafts?
If you answered YES to any of these, please contact Debbi Haynie
as she is already hard at work on the November 1st Craft Show
You have chosen a great place to get involved and make great friends, and we are so glad to welcome you to the Castle Rock Senior Center:

onth Some people have a disposition to serve: “Service to God,
Country and Others.” This is exactly how to describe Lorry
Bishop. Lorry was born as a native Texan in El Paso, the
daughter of a military man. From a young age, Lorry was
taught to put others ahead of herself and it shows in all she
does. When she was twelve she moved to Colorado Springs,
and then back to El Paso in time to graduate high school and
attend the University of Texas-El Paso.
Like her father, Lorry joined the Air Force. During her
four years there she became a Master Sergeant. After her
enlistment she moved to Colorado Springs and joined the Air
Force Reserves. As a member of the reserves, she loaded
cargo aircraft with supplies bound for places like Bosnia and
Afghanistan. Besides her military commitment, she worked
for FedEx for more than fourteen years as an Administrative
Assistant to a Vice President in the software division.
During this time Lorry placed a singles ad in the Colorado Springs Gazette, and that is how she met her
husband Greg. They have been married now for seventeen years. Their honeymoon to New Zealand
would spark a love of travel in both of them that endures to this day! Since New Zealand, Lorry and her
husband have traveled Australia, Italy and most of Northern Europe, Canada, Mexico and the majority of
the United States. When her husband does not go with her, she travels with her twin sister. Her twin sister
lives in Denver, which keeps Lorry close to her niece who she has been helping with a modeling career!
In addition to traveling, Lorry loves movies, walking, reading and even deep sea fishing. Interior design
is also a passion and she even owned a business doing this for a while. Her sense of service even guides
her to help the older generations, such as her own parents, and others at the Castle Rock Senior Center.
We are very fortunate to have Lorry choose to volunteer her time with the Center. Thank you Lorry for
all you do and the wonderful service you give to us.

Be an informed consumer. These are words to live by in medicine, finance, and while going to
the grocery store and reading labels! This is also true regarding complementary approaches in
health care. Complementary health approaches are those outside of the mainstream that are used in
addition to traditional medicine, where as alternative medicine is in place of conventional
medicine. Complementary approaches are either natural products or mind-and-body practices,
such as acupuncture, massage, tai chi, meditation, spinal manipulation, yoga, and relaxation techniques like guided imagery. Perhaps
you attended the June Lunch and Learn on aromatherapy; that would be an example of a complementary approach.
You can use traditional and complementary medicine in tandem. For instance, you might take blood pressure medication to control
hypertension, but you also have a massage every two weeks for muscle relaxation or receive acupuncture for back pain. We know that
constant muscle tenseness and/or pain often cause your blood pressure to be elevated. Therefore, the practices are working together for
the end result of maintaining a healthy blood pressure range, plus feeling better.
Complementary methods are a great addition to traditional medicine when it works for you. While acupuncture may work for one
person, it may not for the next. Another individual may be enthusiastic about the results they receive from reflexology while the next
may prefer spinal manipulation or tai chi. The key, or trick, is to try to find what works best for you . Next, having a conversation with
your primary care provider and keeping the doctor in the loop with what you are trying, or using in addition to any traditional methods,
should provide the best result and keep you from wasting your money while helping you to be "an informed consumer" (source: nih).

Ways You Can Help Make a donation yourself if you believe the Center has benefitted you at some point in your life. Any donation, big or small, helps us move closer to meeting the challenge;
Ask family members to give a donation because of how this organization has been a blessing for you;
Ask area establishments and practitioners (doctors or dentists) who do business with seniors to support their local Senior Cen-ter by giving a donation. Know that they won’t give unless they are asked;
Talk to your friends and neighbors. Let them know about the wonderful services at the Senior Center, and challenge them to make a donation. You never know who may have a heart for this growing population, perhaps in honor of their own parents or someone they know.
Take Part in This Challenge Make checks payable to the Castle Rock Senior Center, 2323 Woodlands Blvd, Castle Rock, CO 80104, or call to donate by credit
card. Make a notation of “Loving the Second Half Fund.”
Thanks to generosity by so many, last year’s Loving the Second Half Fund Challenge was successfully met. The
anonymous donor wants to partner with you to make it happen again and is graciously committing up to $5,000 in matching funds, this year for donations made between
July 1 through September 30. That means the Center could potentially receive $10,000, but it will only happen if every person with a heart for this organization rises up to meet the 2014 challenge. Your donation investment
will multiply, you will have a tax deduction and you will better the Senior Center all at the same time.

This month’s hike on the 5 mile Dawson Butte Trail, a Douglas
County Open Space Trail, travels through mostly forested areas
with some open meadows and views of the Front Range
Mountains. The loop trail follows gently rolling terrain with
only about a 200 foot elevation gain. Elk, bear, mountain lion
and many other species call this land home. Wear comfortable
walking shoes, bring plenty of water, a snack and sunscreen.

We are going to tour the Budweiser Brewery in Fort Collins, which is a manufacturing and packaging plant. Of course you will be treated to free tasting at the end of the tour. This facility is home to the world famous Clydesdale Horses - while they can’t guarantee they will be there, this date maximizes the chance they will be “home.” If not, you will see where they live. On the way home we will stop at everyone’s favorite restaurant, Cinzzetti’s where the all you can eat Italian (and so much more) lunch feast is just $7.99 for Seniors, not including drinks.
We do our best to accommodate everyone who wants to go on our trips, but there are times when the restaurants place a maximum to still
allow us to order off the menu. When possible, we will schedule another trip if enough are on the waiting list.

We are trying going on a Friday this month to see if it is better when it isn’t quite so crowded, as many like sitting at tables.
The Colorado Symphony Orchestra’s tribute to the Boston
Pops is an annual favorite at Lone Tree. They have moved
it indoors to the main stage to accommodate the crowd,
and we were able to secure tickets to this homage to the
great Arthur Fiedler, long-time conductor of the Boston
Pops. This festive tribute features a new blend of light
classics and popular hits, in the style that made Fiedler’s
Boston Pops so enjoyable for audiences - a great way to
spend an evening. Seats are limited.
The Rambler Ranch is an incredible collection of automobiles - more Nash and American Motors Corporation vehicles than anywhere else in the
world, and it’s right here in Elizabeth. There is also a great collection of Ramblers with another 37
manufacturers represented, and car memorabilia. After the tour, you’ll stop for lunch at Hickory House
in Parker (not included in your Activity Fee).
The Garden Club is hosting a trip to the serene Botanic
Gardens at Chatfield on Wednesday, July 30th, leaving at
9:30 AM. A short walking tour will begin your day with view-
ing of the historic Hillibrand Ranch. Participants can continue
on a longer walking tour, visit the special “Butterflies at Chat-
field” exhibit sponsored by the Butterfly Pavilion (extra $5 fee
payable on site), or just look around on your own in the
peaceful setting. A cold fried chicken and fixings picnic will be
served in a covered pavilion (included in your activity fee).
Time will also be available to view the butterfly exhibit after
the longer tour. This is a beautiful place with wild flower
gardens and many varieties of birds. NOTE: because we need
to pre-order the food, the deadline to sign up AND to receive a
credit if you cancel will be Wednesday, July 23rd. Thanks
for your understanding.

Activity Fee doesn’t include the cost of your individual lunch.
APPLEBEE’S ALL-DAY FUNDRAISER Wednesday, July 9 11:00 AM - Close Who doesn’t love Applebee’s, so head on over there this month
and have a great meal while participating in the Dining-to-Donate fundraiser for the Senior Center. Take the flyer on page 6, pick one up at the Center or print from our website, and go eat there anytime on this day. Order what you want to eat, give your server the flyer when you pay for your meal, and a portion will be donated back to the Senior Center. Please remember that there is no discount to you with this program, but you might win the incentive prize if you put your name on the flyer. Give flyers out to everyone you know. Just remind them that they must turn in the flyer.
OUT TO DINNER - “Venice Ristorante Italiano” (DTC area) Monday, July 14 4:30 PM $6 ($9 non-members) This is the Out to Dinner that got snowed out in May, so we are rescheduling. Venice employees pride themselves on caring for each guest, from impeccable service to exquisite authentic Italian cuisine; they guarantee a wonderful dining experience. From the ambiance to the gourmet entrees, this is a definite upscale Italian restaurant, and you will not be disappointed. You will have choices not offered elsewhere, such as Ossobuco d’ Agnello, a lamb shank slow braised with root vegetables, plum tomatoes and sangiovese wine sauce, with your choice of pasta or potatoes. Activity Fee doesn’t include the cost of your individual dinner.
MONTHLY POTLUCK Wednesday, July 16 at 12:00 PM Bring a dish based on the assigned category per last name We have gone back to the original way of conducting potlucks where everyone brings something to share. So that we do have a variety, we would like you to bring a dish in the category listed by the first letter of your last name on the sign-up sheet. We will rotate it each month. For July: A-G: Salad/Vegetable H-M: Side Dish/Bread N-S: Main Course/Casserole T-Z: Dessert. Remember, we won’t have the option to pay anymore, and there are no same-day sign-ups.
OUT TO DINNER - “Flagstaff House” in Boulder Wednesday, July 23 4:00 PM $10 ($13 non-members) Built into a mountainside in 1929, this unparalleled dining experience includes wildlife and gorgeous Boulder views. Named as one of the 50 best restaurants in the United States by Open Table, Flagstaff’s French and American cuisine changes daily, so you know you’ll have the freshest ingredients, along with impeccable service. Activity Fee does not include the cost of your individual dinner.

Walt had made a promise to his daughters to make a movie about their favorite tales and he was not about to let the girls down, no matter what it took. The 14th Annual Golf Tournament was held on May 22nd at The Ridge
at Castle Pines North this year and was another great fundraiser for the Center. Sixty players enjoyed the beautiful course. The weather was wonderful, along with great food and prizes for all. Thanks to all who
played and to the 7 volunteers who helped that day. A special thanks to our committee who really worked hard to make this such a very
successful event: Phyllis Tumey, Doris Rollins and Jim Weglarz. The money raised will benefit the Center.

Rachel Van Leer teaches a variety of line dances each Tuesday afternoon. These were the first day and look how good everyone is doing.
Bev Wells (left picture) played an encore performance at the Yesteryear’s Organ Concert. A full house enjoyed wonderful virtual orchestra tunes.
It was sunny one minute and snowing the next in May in the Springs when we visited the Academy. All agreed that these young people are inspiring.
Members listen to very interesting information about one of the fighters. The next dance is July 19th. Singles & couples welcome. Please join us.
