Today we continue to hear the Gospel of Mark proclaimed. We hear how Jesus heals a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment. This is a story about Jesus’ healing power, and in it we find clues about our understanding of sacrament. We are struck by the physical means used to heal the man, the use of spittle and touch. The Church continues to celebrate the sacraments using physical means. In the Sacrament of Baptism, water and oil are used to show the power of the Holy Spirit. In the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, we are anointed with holy oil on the forehead and the hands. In the Eucharist, bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ. We are a sacramental people who believe that God’s grace is given to us through these physical signs.
Today’s Gospel invites us to consider how we witness the healing presence of Christ in our care for and ministry to those who are sick. We notice that the deaf man is brought to Jesus for healing by his friends. These people beg Jesus to lay his hands on this deaf man so that he might be healed.
Jesus’ healing power is shown in his opening of the man’s ears and the restoring of his speech. We learn that when family
members care for one another when they are sick, they bring Christ’s healing presence.
Yet there is an irony in this story of healing. Jesus gives the man the gift of speech, but then tells him not to use it. Jesus asks that the news of his healing power, which is evidence of his identity as the Messiah, not be spread. But he speaks out. It is ironic that we who are called to share the good news of Jesus with those around us are often afraid to speak out and don’t. But notice how the man who was cured and his friends could not keep quiet about Jesus. As we continue to celebrate Jesus’ healing presence in our lives, we give thanks to God for the gift of healing and health. May we become brave enough to share that with others. Have a good week.
Peace,
Fr. Chris

FAITH FORMATION CONFERENCE
The Annual Education Appeal, will be taken in all parishes this weekend, September 5-6, 2015 in our Diocese, provides financial assistance to many of our Catholic students who want to receive a Catholic education. This special collection is for the scholarship fund that supports the tuition financial aid program for both elementary and high school students in our schools.
Did you know that the Diocese of San Jose educates over 16,500 students in 29 elementary and seven high schools across Santa Clara County? Our average tuition for one elementary student last year was $7,000,while high school tuition is close to $16,500. Many of our students are there because of the generosity and support of your parish community.
Now, more than ever, we need your support to offer more scholarships to families who want to partner with us to provide a strong Catholic community and a quality Catholic education for their children. Today, with the continuing challenges of our economy, parents often fall short in their ability to guarantee that their child can stay in our elementary school and graduate from one of the six Catholic private and diocesan high schools.
With your generosity, you can make a difference by supporting the dreams of families to provide a Catholic education for their children. Thank you in advance for your consideration and your commitment to the children of our Diocese.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Orthodox Christians have a say-ing about the reality of sin. They speak of “this holy and sinful Church, which we love.” We know all too well the effects of sin on the faith community. From our earliest days, we have seen baptism as a place where the old self dies in Christ, dies to sin, and rises to new life. Our ancestors in faith held that post‑baptismal major sin was un-thinkable. Yet, as one Baptist minis-ter once explained, “We know that sin is drowned in the water, but it would appear that the devil is a pretty good swimmer.” The origins of the sacrament of penance have to do with a similar insight among bishops in the early church. A critical question for them was whether or not a baptized per-son who had committed a public sin could be re‑established in church life, forgiven, and restored. For-given, yes, was an early answer, but restored was another matter. Pen-ance would be a permanent lifestyle for the forgiven; they would live at the margins of the community, clearly visible in distinctive gar-ments, and their access to the table of the Eucharist was restricted. The harsh beginnings of public penance led in time to a true treasure of our tradition: the ability to find our way home through the ministry of others, and a way for all of us sinners to experience the gentle embrace of our forgiving Lord. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
