EVENT CONCEPTUALIZATION: WHY SINGAPORE?

According to the World Bank Doing Business 2016 report, Singapore is strategically placed at the crossroads of maritime routes placing it in close proximity to big markets. The concession in taxes and easy loan availability gives Singapore a plus in all the criteria when it comes to foreign direct investment. In the past, Singapore’s excellent telecommunications as well as robust financial and transport infrastructure saw a huge investment from different parts of the world. However, due to the sudden influx of income it was soon realized that the laws were trying to play catch up.

Events 4 Sure realized the vacuum that was created due to lack of clear interpretation of laws in Singapore and after considering all the factors and getting the green light from respective stakeholders,

Events 4 Sure in in collaboration with Global Outsourcing Association Of Lawyers, decided to hold its 25th International Legal Event under the banner of Global Legal ConfEx in Singapore at Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre which aimed towards bringing 200+ Law Professionals representing 20 different countries.

The topics were meticulously selected to be discussed in Global Legal ConfEx, which involved key issues related to Litigation, Compliance Risks, Trends in Legal Technology, Cross Border Arbitration and much more.

EVENT SETUP & REGISTRATION

When the night before was still young, Events 4 Sure onsite team took to the stage and began the work of installing structures, standees, exhibition tables and much more to result into a wonderful conference and exhibition setup to kick start the Mega Event on time.. Our team worked tirelessly and round the clock for ensuring the success of the event from logistics point of view. Every promise kept and every deliverable assured results in building relationship which lasts a lifetime and nobody knows it better than Events 4 Sure. Thus, our onsite team delivered every marketing materials in the delegate bags as promised to our stakeholders.

To ensure the success of Global Legal ConfEx, Singapore a quick and hassle free registration process, Events 4 Sure deployed three teams working in tandem in Singapore, London & India. Every participant that came at the express registration desk was quickly handed over with their respective badges and kits and was asked to join the session.

OPENING REMARKS: ONE BY ONE INTRODUCTION

The Global Legal ConfEx organized by Events 4 Sure in Singapore kick started by an introductory session wherein, each & every participant of the ConfEx got an opportunity to introduce themselves and quickly got familiar to each other. A sense of comfortability and easiness could also be sensed amongst every participant which assured successfulness of our event.

It’s been a decade since, Events 4 Sure has been indulged in organizing legal conferences all over the world and every conference that we organize teaches us something new. The takeaways from this Global Legal ConfEx, Singapore was the level of comfortability our participants made us feel. Every time we host a conference, our goal is to achieve the epitome of the satisfaction index and we believe that our Satisfaction Meter topped the charts this time too.

THE KEYNOTEAny event is said to be a successful one when the Keynote Address turns out to be the most exhilarating section of the whole event. As diverse as the topics could be, the overall presentation delivered by the speakers George Lim, Jarrod Baker & Jeff Bullwinkel turned out to be a master class.

The Keynote Session hall saw a magnanimous gathering of the audience and the numbers just kept on pouring in. Thanks to the quick responsive attitude of the onsite team of Events 4 Sure immediate seating was made available to the audience and there was no interference in the flow of the event.

In conclusion, the Keynote Session resulted in success which saw the hall filled up to its maximum seating capacity plus some more. The topics discussed by the honorable speakers were of utmost importance relevant in today’s scenario and subsequently, the topics raised by the audience were of crucial importance as well.

George Lim, SC, Co-Chairman of the Board of Directors, Singapore International Mediation Centre, started the Keynote Address and discussed important ways to add value to the business community through mediation. The honorable speaker discussed every point in detail and tried to answer each and every question with utmost humility and clarity. George Lim, provided important keynotes which helped the participants to gain a better understanding on how to improve the efficiency of business through mediation by saving time and valuable resources.

Jarrod Baker, Senior Managing Director, Forensic and Litigation Consulting, FTI Consulting, Singapore, followed George Lim and his choice of topic was the most tweeted scandal of the year 2016, THE FIFA SCANDAL. He discussed various loopholes which led to the scandalous affair. He also provided various take away from the scandal which should help the corporate world in dealing with different transactions. Many important questions were raised by the participants regarding the topic and the honorable speaker humbly answered all of them one by one.

Jeff Bullwinkel, Director of Legal & Corporate Affairs, Microsoft Corporation, Singapore, closed the keynote address. The maestro from Microsoft discussed the importance of technology in the legal industry and how to put trust at the core of technology. He gave diverse viewpoints on how technology helped the legal industry over the decade and helped the audience to gain an understanding the importance of it. This keynote session particularly raised significant problems which attorneys face while dealing with technology.

CROSSROADS

After the keynote session got over, the participants were asked to select the different routes they wanted to pursue. In Hall A, the topics revolved around E – Discovery & Litigation whereas, in Hall B, they were Risk, Compliance and Security. The audience seemed to be excited because of the relevancy of both the subjects which were to be discussed. Where one hall pondered on key issues related to anti – fraud techniques that should be adopted, the other one discussed on how E – Discovery could help in reducing costs when it came to litigation. If ever there was a time in human history where it was essential for a person to be in two spots at the same time it was then.

The Global Legal ConfEx, Singapore advanced by holding panel discussions, presentations and case study which were delivered by some of top names of the legal industry such as MATTHEW SHAW, Of Counsel, DLA Piper, Singapore, STANLEY T. PARK, Managing Director / Head of Legal – Asia Pacific Region, Scotiabank Global Banking and Markets, Singapore, SCOTT THIEL, Partner, DLA Piper LLP, Singapore, DAN SHEA, Director, Compliance & Litigation, Microsoft, Singapore, JASON LIEW, Managing Director, FTI Consulting, Singapore.

Considering the success of Global Legal ConfEx, Singapore many participants pre – registered for the Global Legal ConfEx & Global IP ConfEx, Singapore which is to be held on Feb 2017.

Audience members also mentioned their curiosity for the Global IP ConfEx which is to be held in London on 16th March, 2016.

After a long day of discussions, it was time to satisfy the hunger pangs. The food was lined and participants decided to dig in to sumptuous food prepared by Suntec, Singapore. Several authentic and traditional delicacies were served which were enjoyed by the participants to the full extent. This luncheon also proved to be a unique networking opportunity amongst the participants where everybody discussed some key agendas they face during day – to – day operations.

With the taste buds satisfied and the stomach full with the hearty meal, it was time for the audience to maximize on One – on – One networking opportunity where they got to exchange their business cards. Several In – House Legal Departments/Law Firms also took an opportunity to form key strategic alliances with the regional law firms to overcome the challenges of compliance which they face in cross – border acquisition.

NETWORKING PARTNERS: TEA & LUNCHEONIn between detailed panel discussions, presentations and case studies, the participants were time and again rejuvenated by a constant supply specially hand - picked tea all thanks to the support of Our Tea Partner Verztec.

The session started by introducing the requisite members of In – House Legal Departments, Law Firms and Service Provider in order to discuss their day – to – day troubles while operating in Singapore and solutions provided by Law Firms & Service Provider.

The In – House Legal Community were represented by DAN SHEA, Director, Compliance & Litigation, Microsoft, Singapore, DARRELL CHAN, Head of Legal, Expedia Asia, Singapore, MIA KÄRKINEN, Senior Legal Counsel, Wärtsilä, Singapore, JAMES BAKER, Head of Legal, Thome Group of Companies, Singapore, who engaged with the audience proactively making them an integral part of the discussion and helping them to gain a better understanding of the scenario. Many key topics were discussed during the In – House Legal Department session which helped every organization to have clarified vision and structure when it came to compliance issues in Singapore.

Law Firms session was next to follow which were represented by SCOTT THIEL, Partner, DLA Piper LLP, Singapore, NICHOLAS LUM,

Partner, Oon & Bazul LLP, Singapore, RISHI GANTAN, Associate, Ella Cheong LLC, Singapore. In a fantastic manner, they discussed with every participant the solution regional law firms were able to provide to the In – House Legal Department to stay in compliance with the regional laws affecting Singapore.

Service Providers session was represented by CHIA POH LING, Consultant Forensic Scientist, The Forensic Experts Group, Singapore, MR TAN SWEE WAN, Director, Forensic & Litigation Support, Nexia TS Pte Ltd, KATE CHAN, Managing Director APAC, Kroll Ontrack, Singapore, ANTHONY RANASINGHE, Manager, Business Development APAC, Kroll Ontrack, Singapore, who discussed the technical solutions available for In – House Legal Department and Law firms guiding the In – House Counsel & Law Firms with respect to E – Discovery solutions with recent updates.

STRATEGIC ROUND TABLEIntroduced in 2015, Strategic Round table once again proved to be the show stopper of Global Legal ConfEx, Singapore. This unique platform provided every participant with an opportunity to play pro – active part in strategic round table by expressing their viewpoints one by one.
