Step One:
Our common welfare should come first; personal recovery depends upon GA Unity
1. Am I in my group a healing, mending, integrating person, or am I divisive? What
about gossip and taking other members’ inventories?
2. Am I a peacemaker? Or, do I with pious preludes such as “just for the sake of
discussion,” plunge into argument?
3. Am I gentle with those who rub me the wrong way, or am I abrasive?
4. Do I make competitive GA remarks, such as comparing one group with another or
contrasting GA in one place with GA in another?
5. Do I put down some GA activities as if I were superior for not participating in this or
that aspect of GA?
6. Am I informed about GA as a whole? Do I support, in every way I can, GA as a
whole, or just the parts I understand and approve of?
7. Am I as considerate of GA members as I want them to be of me?
8. Do I spout platitudes about love while indulging in and secretly justifying behaviour
that bristles with hostility?
9. Do I go to enough GA meetings or read enough GA literature to really keep in touch?
10. Do I share with GA all of me, the bad and the good, accepting as well as giving help to
the fellowship?
‘There are two kinds of pride, both good and bad.
‘Good pride' represents our dignity and self-respect.
'Bad pride' is the deadly sin of superiority
That reeks of conceit and arrogance’

THANKYOU
My name is Kathleen and I am a Compulsive Gambler and a member of Partick
Tuesday.
I would like to take this opportunity through the pages of Scottish Life to thank all my
friends in GA for the support and love which was shown to me during my time in
Prison.
I was sentenced on the 12th February 2016 and spent 6 weeks in Cornton Vale Pris-
on in Stirling, before being transferred to Saughton Prison in Edinburgh where I
served the remainder of my sentence being released on 27th June 2016. I am cur-
rently on an HDC tag which will be removed on the 11th November 2016.
During the time I was away, I received weekly visits from my son Thomas, my sis-
ters Una and Margaret Mary and my brother in law Tom. I also received weekly vis-
its from my friends in GA, and in particular my wee mucker Betty Boo, who never
missed a week over the whole period.
The cards and letters I received from all parts of the country from my many friends
whom I have met over the past 4 years and some I haven’t yet met, in GA kept me
going through it all. The highlight of my day was at 5.00pm when the mail was deliv-
ered. There are far too many people to mention individually, but please know that
by taking the time to write me a card or letter you played a big part in getting me
through to the end.
On a day that I was not particularly feeling good, when I received my mail that night,
one of the letters I received lifted my spirits no end. The person who sent the letter
will know who they are when I say that they asked me to look at my current situation
not as a prison sentence, but as an extended stay on the naughty step. That
kept me going for a long time. Thank you.
I couldn’t have imagined when I walked through the doors of Partick Burgh Halls on
a wet Wednesday in January 2013, that my life was about to be transformed, with
the help and encouragement of the men and women who have travelled this journey
before me. My gratitude for this great fellowship of ours cannot be put into words.
I am looking forward to travelling again with Betty Boo and Walter when I will be able
to thank you all personally.
My name is Kathleen, Compulsive Gambler, and No Gambling to Report.

Carol – DENNISTOUN
GA is the place to be,
To help us to eventually see,
What we were doing to all that mattered,
Being selfish, telling lies, and life in tatters
That we were in the right place,
to help us stop at our own pace
Not to hurry and be so calm,
not spit the dummy out of the pram.
To help others along the way,
Then you can eventually have your say
Resentment is a thing of the past, cos I have finally got it at last
Be wiser today a Day at a Time. Then everything will be fine
I am a better person today, cos I’ve learned the hard way
To arrest this illness I have done,
I’m not cured but I can shun
Gambling today is not for me, a better life I can see
That’s why you need to come to GA.
‘Pride makes us artificial and humility makes us real’

Section 3: What is addiction for the partner? Some hidden minor compensations for the spouse/partner from remaining married to/living or in a relationship with someone compulsively gambling. 9. Escape from boring predictable routine and from meaninglessness during
recovery.
Even although there is great relief once the gambling has stopped; that the worst
of the stress and stain are no longer present, then, such are the contradictions of
human nature, there can be some dissatisfaction with the present smooth
relatively predictable routine. So the spouse/partner/relative too may need to
learn the benefits of recovery without being tempted to go back to the unbearably
chaotic style of the addictive way of life.
Summary of the Effects of Removal of the Hidden Minor Benefits for the
Spouse.
All of the ways of coping which bring minor compensations are reasonable and
normal ways of living through adversity. Many of them are essential to the
survival of the spouse/partner/relative when things are at their worst. None of
them are clearly moral defects, character weaknesses or abnormal reactions in
themselves. But, when the addict changes their behaviour and begins to move
away from an addictive way of life, they are no longer so necessary, are no
longer even appropriate and may, if they continue, eventually become obstacles
and difficulties in the way of the addict’s (and therefore also of the
spouses/partners/relatives) recovery.
They can come to feel negatively about the addict’s recovery. It is only
occasionally that this is done quite consciously and deliberately. Unless the
spouse/partner/relative realises that living with an addiction has made them
become a person they would not otherwise have chosen to be, and unless they
can learn how to overcome it, they too will remain permanently corrupted and
soured by the experience.

Gamblers Anonymous Scotland had the recent pleasure of a visit from Bill H. Atlanta City Georgia U.S.A. This is his story as it appeared on Sunday 14th July 1968 in The Atlanta Journal and The Atlanta Constitution.
Starts Quitters Group Stop Gambling? He hopes he can by Walker Lundy He can’t even match dimes for a coke now. He’s afraid if he does his $40,000 nightmare may begin again. The man who is a $50,000 a year salesman and who owns a $35,000 plus home in the heart of Northside Atlanta is a gambler. More truthfully, he is a compulsive gambler who has kicked the habit. He says he wants to rescue the other estimated 4,000 Atlantans who are addicted to gambling to the point that it inhibits the rest of their lives. He is starting the city’s first chapter of Gamblers Anonymous, the 2,500 member nationwide organisation that tries to help compulsive gamblers in much the same way that Alcoholic Anonymous gives help. The first meeting of Gamblers Anonymous, Atlanta style, is scheduled for Saturday at 7.30pm at the First Methodist Church, 360 Peachtree St. N.E., in room 101. The groups mailing address is Box 9701 Atlanta 303019. The telephone answering service is 237-7281. The man, who is starting the group, like the people he hopes will show for the meeting, will remain nameless. His story which stretches over almost half of his 37 years is plainly fantastic. He told it this week to Journal reporter. “I started when I was 15 playing pinball machines,” he said. “By the time I was 16, I was playing no-limit poker.” He said he worked part-time and also stole from his mother’s pocketbook to finance his early gambling. He joined the Air Force for four years at 19 and came of age as a gambler he recalled. He said he also ran a black market operation between England and Germany sending coffee to Germany in exchange for perfume and silk stockings. He said the operation netted him $3,000 a month and he spent it all on gambling. “I must have blown $50,000 overseas alone,” “I didn’t come home with a cent.” AFTER HIS HITCH he returned to the states, entered college and got married. He became too busy to gamble. After graduation from college, however, he moved to a city in South Georgia and began again. He took up golf and began betting on his game. He joined a Fraternity organisation and soon became $2,000 in debt in a poker game at the club. He stole enough money from his company to pay off the debt and managed to cover the theft before it was detected.
‘A man's pride can be his downfall, and he needs to learn
When to turn to others for support and guidance’
11
THEN HE changed jobs and moved to Atlanta. That was about four years ago. The first year here he earned $29,000 in commissions. Early in the second year he joined one of the city’s most established private social clubs. “Then I really started to swing,” he said. A fellow member helped him enter a $1,000 “take-out” poker game, which required a $1,000 “donation” in order to get a seat at the table. Another club member introduced him to a professional bookie. The man began betting $100 on football and basketball games. Then he graduated to $500 and $1,000 per game. DURING the Atlanta Falcons first season, he bet $8,000 on the Falcons v Cleveland Browns game. He had four different bets with point spreads ranging from 23½ - 26½. “I won them all.” he said. The day before, he added, he had bet a total of $35,000 on 15 college football games and came away an $8,000 loser. His salary by now had climbed to almost $50,000 a year in sales commissions. He said he was betting all he could and was borrowing money from several banks to finance more gambling. He said he paid $24,000 to the bookie in four months-and still owed him $14,000. He paid the bookie $3,000 more and “told him if he wanted to shoot me to go ahead because I couldn’t pay him any more.” He said the bookie invited him back to play. Finally he said, he, “Hit bottom about six months ago.” He was $40,000 in debt mostly for bank loans. He telephoned the Gamblers Anonymous office in New York and was referred one of its members. “I told him the bookies put me to sleep,” the man recalled. “He said that I was like an alcoholic. He told me not even to flip a dime for a Coke.” The telephone call changed the man’s life. He finally stopped gambling, quit the social club and began paying off his debts. Today he says he still owes $19,000 and believes he is on the way to being cured of the impulse to gamble. He has not bet anything since the telephone call six months ago. He says he is sincere about helping other addicted gamblers. He believes they will show up at the first meeting and hopes to have members of the Louisville KY, club here for the occasion. “If we can get these people here in Atlanta to show up,” the man said, “that’s all that is necessary.” He is still at a loss to explain why he gambled and why he-and others find it so tough to quit. “Gambling is a form of escape I guess,” he said. “You’re in a dream world when you’re gambling.” The anonymous man hopes to stick a pin in that dream world, beginning Saturday night.

November 1st Reflection For The Day from the GA Blue Book
Those whom I most respect in the Gamblers Anonymous Program and, in turn, those from
whom I’ve learned the most seem convinced that pride is, as one person put it, the “root
sin”. In moral theology, pride is the first of the seven deadly sins. It is also considered the
most serious, standing apart from the rest by virtue of its unique quality. Pride gets right
into our spiritual victories. It insinuates itself into all our successes and accomplishments
even when we attribute them to God.
,
Do I struggle against pride by working the Tenth Step regularly, facing myself freshly and
making things right where they’ve gone wrong?
Today I Pray
May I be on guard constantly against the sneakiness of pride, which can creep into every
achievement, every triumph, every reciprocated affection. May I know that whenever things
are going well for me, my pride will be on the spot ready to take credit. May I watch for it.
Today I Will Remember
Put pride in its place.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………
TOWARDS THE FIRST 90 DAYS
Up to this point, your life (if you are like us) has been unmanageable, directed by your uncontrollable urge to gamble. The pattern your life has been following can only have the following outcome:
Misery, Heartache and Financial Drain
For you and those closest to you
The Gamblers Anonymous way of life will obviously be very different to you. It may
even frighten you. But we can assure you, the Gamblers Anonymous way of life has
the following encouraging outcome
Happiness, Peace of Mind and Self-Respect
All that is required is an open mind and a genuine desire to stay away from your
next bet, one day at a time.
We welcome you to Gamblers Anonymous and please, please, if there is anything
you don't understand, ask someone to explain.
‘You are no longer alone. Accept the hand of friendship’

Malcolm - Dundee Monday Hey Everyone, So, I must confess that I am one of those people who never writes or replies to
emails. Instead I chat a lot online, but, after the recent fall I had and the number of
emails I have received and phone calls from you wonderful people, I have felt the
need to change that attitude and so that's why I write to you all at this moment.
The fact of the matter is that I was two years and three months free of a bet. I went
to Aberdeen to play ten pin bowling and ended up in the environment of gambling
machines with my friend (who was playing the machine) and ultimately I ended up
putting my own money in.
This is a lesson too late for the learning but it’s not too late for me to warn everybody
of the dangers of being a compulsive gambler.
I have been in Gamblers Anonymous since 2009 and have made a lot of friends with
people in the Fellowship from all over Scotland I share a common problem and have
Faith that we are no more strangers in the big bad world, but, rather members of the
Fellowship. This really means a lot to me.
It feels very good to know that there are a lot of people around the world who are
very bold to proclaim their love for the Fellowship of G.A. The people of the Fellow-
ship will always be in my mind and I still have faith in my higher power.
‘God Grant Me the Serenity, To Accept the Things I Cannot Change, the Courage to
Change the Things I Can and the Wisdom to Know the Difference’
May the God (of your own understanding) keep you safe and may the Unity of the
Fellowship help us all to grow well and keep us off gambling ‘One Day at a Time’
PEACE and LOVE to everyone in the Fellowship in every nation around the world.
‘Vanity and pride are different things,
Though the words are often used synonymously
A person may be proud without being vain.
Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves,
Vanity, to what we would have others think of us’

Frank-B Sunday Rutherglen 12 Steps
Hi my name is Frank and I am a recovering compulsive gambler...the obsession to
gamble has been removed by working my program on a daily basis, getting con-
nected to my Higher Power (GOD)...first thing on awakening. What a powerful and
beautiful thing to do.
As I am approaching thirteen years free from this cunning, baffling and insidious ill-
ness, COMPULSIVE GAMBLING...I am sending a small article into the Scottish Life.
It is not my first article, but, the first for some time.
At this time in my life I am at peace and content with my daily life...this was not al-
ways the case in the throes of my gambling addiction. The totally unmanageable life
I was living was dragging me into self-destruction...
Finally my higher power (GOD) put somebody in my path and guided me BACK to
Gamblers Anonymous. Since then I have always been involved in a group ,had a
sponsor, got into the literature...do and work the 12 Steps on a daily basis and carry
that message to the still suffering compulsive gambler...of which there are many, in
the rooms as well as out with rooms.
What a joy to see people recover and experience real recovery through the pro-
gram. Not your middle of the road solution - go to meetings and don’t place that first
bet - it’s a start, but, that’s all it is...I thank GOD for the people in G.A. that are
armed with the facts about their illness and also the solution The 12 Steps....
Principles before Personalities....I thank these people for their time and commitment
in keeping real recovery alive in G.A meetings. You can’t pass on something you
haven’t got .If you are truly beaten by your addiction...and are totally power-
less....You Need a Power Greater Than You.
May you now find...Hope, Belief and Courage...Recovery Works if You Work it.
‘God Grant Me the Serenity’
‘So in our pride we ordered for breakfast an omelet, toast and coffee
And what has just arrived is a tomato salad with onions, a dish of pickles,
A big slice of watermelon and two bottles of cream soda’
15
Frank Dundee G.A.
I came to Gamblers Anonymous totally whipped and beaten by gambling, my mind
and life all over the shop. I was alone, in despair and hoping to find the strength and
desire to abstain from gambling.
I had gambled since I was a kid. At the age of forty three I was financially secure
and decided to retire and become a professional gambler. (Poor choice of career for
a compulsive gambler)
Me and my gambling were soon out of control and the chaos continued for another
four years; then G.A. and a slow healing since.
Today I am happy. I learned I had to conquer my fears: the following helped.
Happiness, anxiety, joy, resentment; we have many words for the many emotions
we experience in our lifetimes. But, deep down, at our cores, there are only two
emotions: Love and Fear.
All positive emotions come from Love; all negative emotions come from Fear.
From Love flow happiness, contentment, peace and joy.
From Fear come anger, hate anxiety and guilt.
If we’re in Fear we are not in a place of Love.
When we are in Love we cannot be in a place of Fear.
Can you think of a time when you’ve been in both Love and Fear? It’s impossible.
All of our invented Fears involve either the past or the future, only love is in the pre-
sent. Now is the only real moment we have and Love is the only real emotion be-
cause it’s the only one that occurs in the present moment.
Fear is always based on something in the past and causes us to be afraid of some-
thing we think may happen in the future.
To live in the present then, is to live in Love not Fear. Learn to Love ourselves;
Infusing ourselves with Love begins the washing away of our Fears.
Happy Days.
Thanks to everyone in G.A. & Gam Anon for helping me to find myself.
P.S. No chemical substances in use.
‘It was pride that changed angels into devils; it is humility that makes men as angels

WARNING
When I am an old I shall wear purple
with a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
and pick flowers in other people's gardens
and learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow fatter
and eat three pounds of sausages at a go
or only bread and pickle for a week
and hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
and pay our rent and not swear in the street
and set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
when suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple

‘To know a person observe how they gain their goal,
Rather than how they miss it;
For when we fail, our pride supports us,
When we succeed, it betrays us’
Personal Responsibility In Daily Effort
The Twelve Promises of Recovery
We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness
We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it
We will comprehend the word ‘Serenity’
We will all know peace
No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see our ex-
perience can benefit others
That feeling of uselessness and self-pity will disappear
We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows
Self-seeking will slip away
Our whole attitude and outlook on life will change
Fear of people and economic insecurity will leave us
We will intuitively know how to handle situations that baffle us
We will suddenly realise that Higher Power is doing for us what
we could not do for ourselves
