Gospeler The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ According to Mark (12:38-44)

People Glory to you, Lord Christ. After the Gospel Gospeler The Gospel of the Lord People Praise to you, Lord Christ. Sermon The Rector Nicene Creed

We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Episcopal Relief & Development Supports Sandy Relief Efforts

Thanks to the generosity of Episcopalians from around the country, Episcopal Relief & Development is in the process of making emergency grants to impacted dioceses in support of parish-based relief activities following Superstorm Sandy. In the US, these funds will help congregations expand feeding ministries and facilitate the provision of shelter and transportation assistance for those in need. In the Caribbean, Episcopal Relief & Development support is helping to secure food, water and building materials for distribution in critically impacted areas. Superstorm Sandy hit the Caribbean on October 25 before turning north along the US East Coast and making landfall in central New Jersey on October 29, causing severe damage. At least 181 people were killed by the storm, including 110 in the US. Episcopal Relief & Development has been working with leaders from the heavily impacted Episcopal dioceses of New York, Long Island, New Jersey, Newark and Connecticut to meet community needs. The organization also continues to support the Episcopal dioceses of Haiti and the Dominican Republic as they mobilize local resources and reach out to those hardest hit. In New York and New Jersey, volunteers and donations of food, water and warm clothing made their way to areas of need over the weekend, though pockets of extreme devastation remain. Contributions to Episcopal Relief & Development’s Hurricane Sandy Response Fund will help provide for basic needs, especially as people prepare for the Nor’easter predicted to hit the area on November 7. Individuals who live near impacted areas may contact their local Episcopal diocese for ways to help, and those in the New York City area can visit www.nyc.gov/html/nycservice/home.html for information on volunteer opportunities. “On behalf of the staff of Episcopal Relief & Development, I extend my heartfelt thanks to our church partners and all those who have contributed to the relief effort so far,” said Rob Radtke, the organization’s President. “I especially want to thank those congregations who collected a special offering yesterday [Sunday, November 4] for our Hurricane Sandy Response Fund, and all those who have been supporting us with prayers and messages of encouragement. We could not do this without you.” Episcopal Relief & Development has made available a number of resources to help congregations and individuals support healing and recovery after Hurricane Sandy. Visit www.er-d.org/Hurricane-Sandy for the latest updates on relief efforts, and please consider donating to the Hurricane Sandy Response Fund. Episcopal Relief & Development is the international relief and development agency of the Episcopal Church and an independent 501(c)(3) organization. The agency takes its mandate from Jesus’ words found in Matthew 25. Its programs work towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals. Episcopal Relief & Development works closely with the worldwide Church and ecumenical partners to help rebuild after disasters and to empower local communities to find lasting solutions that fight poverty, hunger and disease, including HIV/AIDS and malaria.

The Episcopal Church: From The Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori &

President of the House of Deputies Gay Jennings The storm called Sandy has wrought havoc northward hundreds of miles from its first Caribbean landfall, killing and injuring dozens of people in Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti, the Bahamas, United States, and Canada. The destruction left in its path has deepened the misery of those still recovering from the 2010 earthquake in Haiti as well as hurricanes earlier this season. It is always the poorest who are most affected, although the news media have shown only a little of that reality. The impact in a principal metropolitan area of the United States has brought an unimagined level of destruction, and suffering that will long continue in the mid-Atlantic region. It has also brought home the reality of changing global weather and the kind of extreme climate events that are increasingly likely to confront us all. The effects of this storm are being felt far beyond the lands over which it has passed. May this remind of us of our shared community and tenancy on this fragile earth, our island home. This is a time for reaching out to neighbors next door as well as farther abroad with solidarity and offers of basic human hospitality - food, water, electrical connections, showers and shelter - as well as money to assist the lengthy recovery that will be required everywhere this storm has moved. Episcopal Relief and Development began preparations with dioceses before the storm made landfall, and will continue to respond in the days and months ahead. Please be generous in prayer, and with funds and neighborly hospitality. Our Anglican neighbors gathered in New Zealand for the Anglican Consultative Council have been profligate with their prayers and expressions of concern. We know that God is with us in the midst of this suffering; you can help others to discover that reality through your own response. May the light of Christ shine through you, and may his light shatter the darkness.
