Dear brothers and sisters in the Lord,
We find ourselves at a most opportune juncture! As you are all aware, our parish is well under-way with our capital campaign and renovation, thanks to the tireless bravura of Fathers Sebas-tian and John. I mention an opportune juncture because we, as a parish community, have in the physical “renewal” of our church building a great opportunity to kick off a spiritual, ministerial renewal to coincide. After all, our parish community is primarily an ekklesia, a people “called out”, to which a building occupies only a secondary place. Moving from officiating Masses in the Cody Center for several months to worshipping in the new space is inherently a seminal event and, as such, presents a significant occasion to take this event and make it an experience that will stretch far beyond a remodelling alone.
Perhaps we should begin by revisiting our parish mission statement: To create, maintain, nur-ture, and foster an environment that will encourage and assist us to reach our full potential through growth in the knowledge and image of Christ in every facet of our lives. Challenged by lifelong learning and affirmed by active participation, St. Joseph’s Parish Family proclaims boldly the Word of God and with abounding joy celebrates the Holy Eucharist — the summit of Christian worship and spirituality — and through outreach, supports and ministers to the community at large. Our beautiful mission statement authentically captures the spirit of the new evangelisation spoken of by Pope Saint John Paul II, viz., in the words of the timeless Dom Chautard, “that [our] apostolate[, our going out,] will be successful only in the measure that [we ourselves] live that supernatural inner life of which You are the sovereign Principle and Jesus Christ the Source.”
In the following pages, we announce with great excitement and joy the inauguration of a min-isterial renewal, one which reminds us in a three-tiered approach that Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church is called by God to minister to the parishioners as well as the community in various ways which will:• Enhance the worship experience by renovating the church and its campus facilities to accommodate a diverse and growing community; • Reach out to parishioners and the surrounding community alike through a variety of ministries offered by the church; special focus will be given to the inauguration of the Angels of Mercy and Small Christian Communities; and• Energise and evangelise the parish through adult catechesis, school education, religious formation, and youth ministry, focusing on bringing back disassociated Catholics and reaching the many unregistered Catholics and non-Catholics in the parish; special focus will be given to the start-up of Young Adult Ministry and Adult Faith Formation.
This vision will be accomplished while always adhering to our mission statement, holding our-selves to the highest standards of stewardship, and remembering that we are empowered by the Holy Spirit to seek out God’s will in service of our fellow men.
I am so delighted to accompany the people of Saint Joe’s on this ambitious venture, reminding all that we can’t do it alone! You are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it…Strive eagerly, then, for the greatest spiritual gifts (1Cor 12:27.31).
God bless you all,Father Briggs

a" Every facet of our lives": Ministry OrganisationWe at Saint Joseph’s are so incredibly blessed to have an array of ministries: indeed, something for everyone! This year, our goal is to get as much participation in ministry as possible from each and every one of our parish-ioners…all participation, no matter how small, matters! If [we] were all one part, where would the body be? But as it is, there are many parts, yet one body (1Cor 12:19-20). While during COVID-19 some of our ministries have not yet resumed, we encourage everyone to take a look at the various ways you and your family can get involved, and we hope to host a ministry fair as soon as possible (spring?) in order to learn more about each one! In the meantime, the contact provided for the head of each area of ministry can assist in directing your inquiry to the proper contact.
"Growth in the knowledge and image of Christ": Young Adult MinistryThis fall, we are excited to kick-off our young adult ministry. All young adults 18-39 years old are invited to join Fr. Briggs and crew for a night of fellowship & bring ideas & input to help launch Young Adult Ministry at St. Joseph's. In the future, stay tuned to the Young Adult Ministry section on our new Faith Formation page of the bulletin.
"Lifelong learning": Adult Faith FormationIn addition to the adult bible studies which we already have present at Saint Joseph’s, we will be hosting regular adult faith formation sessions every Wednesday from 5-6:15pm. All adults of the parish (and especially parents with kids in PREP!) are welcome and encouraged to come feed yourselves with an array of offerings and series offered by different speakers. For more information, stay tuned to the Adult Faith Formation section on our new Faith Formation page of the bulletin.
"Outreach, supports, and ministers to the community at large": Angels of Mercy and Stephen MinistriesAt some point, all of us will experience grief. We find ourselves physically or emotionally (or both) alone: alone when a spouse dies, alone when a parent dies, alone when a loved one has terminal illness, alone after the funeral is over and everyone has to go back to their own lives. Angels of Mercy, a personal vision of our pastor, Fr. Sebastian, is in the formation stage and seeks to provide a variety of support, such as grief support through bereavement, grief share, and visitation and assistance to the homebound, hospitals, and nursing homes. In con-junction with this start-up, we are blessed to have parishioners training to be Stephen Ministers, a programme to organise, equip, and supervise a team of congregation members to provide high-quality, one-to-one, Christ-cen-tred care to people in the congregation and community experiencing life difficulties. For more information, visit www.stephenministries.org.
"Reach our full potential": Small Catholic CommunitiesPerhaps our most ambitious goal which we hope to see forming in early spring of 2021 are a collection of Small Catholic Communities. Saint Joseph’s is a numerically BIG church community, and at times many of us may feel as though we go to church for the sacraments without feeling connected, without knowing the people with whom we attend Mass, without finding or getting or giving support to one another, without having any responsibility or involvement for building up the community and the church. We need to have a relational way of being Church. We need to move from a doing church to a being Church. We need a structure where everybody is involved and everybody feels responsibility for trying to live the Gospel values and supporting others to do the same. The idea of Small Catholic Communities is a breaking-down of our parish boundaries into a number of neighbourhood communities which will coordinate meeting amongst themselves for prayer, bible studies, faith sharing, and outreach, so that when we come together as a larger church community, we can rest assured of our collective commitment to work for the Kingdom of God in our little corner of the world.
"Create, maintain, nurture, foster": Catechist Training To provide for the highest quality of faith formation at Saint Joseph’s, we are offering eight two- to three-hour sessions by which our parishioners can obtain Diocesan Catechist Level I training. If you are a catechist in any capacity — from teaching or assisting at PREP, youth ministry, young adult ministry, RCIA, or adult faith for-mation, to anyone who might even be interested in assisting as a catechist in any of our parish’s ministries in the future — please contact Lourdes for more information and to sign up. Sessions will take place one Tuesday evening out of each month, beginning September 29. Better still, these sessions will be 100% free to our parishio-ners!!
