Prayer for Catechists CATECHETICAL SUNDAY 2019

Prayer for Catechists - O God, our Heavenly Father, you have given us the gift of these catechists to be heralds of the Gospel to our parish family. We lift them up to you in thanksgiving and intercede for them concerning their hopes and needs. May we be attentive to the presence of your Word in them, a Word that lifts up and affirms, calls forth and challenges, is compassionate and consoles. We pray that our parish family will always be blessed with those who have responded to the call to share in Christ’s prophetic mission as catechists. May we too be open to the universal call to service that Christ addresses to all of his disciples, contributing our gifts to the communion of faith, the Church. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Partnership I dreamed I stood in a studio and watched two sculptors there.

The clay they used was a young child’s mind and they fashioned it with care.

One was a teacher: the tools he used were books and music and art. One was a parent with a guiding hand and a gentle loving heart.

Day after day the teacher toiled with a touch that was deft and sure While the parent labored by his side and polished and made it pure.

And when at last their task was done, they were proud of what they had wrought,

For the things they had molded into the child could neither be sold or bought.

And each agreed he would have failed if they had worked alone, For behind the parent, stood the school and behind the teacher……the home

“I urge you first of all to pray….” (Timothy 2:1). St. Paul’s, in his letter to his co-worker Timothy and to the Church in Ephesus emphasizes the importance of Prayer in his Pastoral Letter to his associate Timothy – today’s 2nd reading: – “I urge you first of all to pray...” (2 Tim 2:1). Paul emphasizes the importance of prayer. That is why he begins by stating “First of All.” Prayer should not be an afterthought; it should be a top priority. The first Christians give us a wonderful example in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 2:42): “They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” Who should we pray for? Paul tells Timothy to pray for “everyone.” Why? Paul gives 2 reasons: (1) “That they may live peaceful and quiet lives.” And (2) “This pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to the Knowledge of the truth.” Paul goes on to inform us that there are various forms of prayer: "I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone" (1 Tim 2:1). We use an acronym of four letters – ACTS - to help us to describe at least four forms of prayer. It contains the first letter of the four forms of prayer: Adoration, Contrition, Thanksgiving, Supplication (petition).

We find all four forms of prayer in the Mass.

Adoration – In the prayer “Glory to God in the highest,” we continue, “We praise you; we bless you; we adore you…” We express the holiness of God in the “Our Father… Hallowed – Holy - be thy name.” This merely reiterates the 2nd of the 10 commandments – “You shall not take the name of your Lord in vain,” (Ex 20). In the Eucharistic Prayer, we express a prayer of adoration at the conclusion of the Preface, “we sing of your praise: Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts…”

Contrition - Jesus reminds us, “If you are going to the altar to offer your gift and discover that your brother/sister has something against you. Go first; be reconciled to your brother/sister, then go offer your gift” (Mt 5: 24). That is why we always begin the Mass with the Penitential Rite: “I confess to Almighty God…that I have sinned in thought, word and deed.”

Thanksgiving - Recall the story of the 10 lepers in Luke’s Gospel (17: 11-19) who were healed by Jesus. Only one came back to thank him, and he was a Samaritan. Jesus responds, “Were not 10 made clean! Where are the others? Was there no one but this foreigner to return to give thanks?” In the Mass the Eucharistic prayer, which is an extended prayer of thanksgiving, we pray: “It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God….”

Supplication (Petition) - The prayer of supplication also known as the prayer of petition is a prayer that we pray immediately after the Profession of Faith. In this prayer of petition, which is the most common form of prayer, we name our requests or petitions. We notice that most of our prayers at Mass end with “through Christ our Lord,” or, “through him with him, in him to you almighty father.” Why do we conclude our prayers at Mass in this fashion? St. Paul answers our question in his advice to Timothy: "For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all men-- (1 Tim 2:5-7). Jesus is the mediator, the bridge between God and man and, this is why we conclude every prayer at mass in this fashion. “Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi.” - “The law of prayer is the law of belief.” Prayer is simply the language of our relationship with Jesus.

RCIA - A Personal Journey in Faith: Coming to know - Who is Jesus?

When? Monday, October 7, 2019, 7:00 p.m.

Where? Conference room, Grogan Center.

A reading from John’s Gospel (John 1: 35 – 51) to set stage

The next day John was there again with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, "Behold, the Lamb of God." The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, "What are you looking for?" They said to him, "Rabbi" (which translated means Teacher), "where are you staying?" He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So, they

went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon. Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus. He first found his own brother Simon and told him, "We have found the Messiah” (which is translated Anointed). Then he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon the son of John; you will be called Cephas" (which is translated Peter). The next day he decided to go to Galilee, and he found Philip. And Jesus said to him, "Follow me." Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the town of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the law, and also the prophets, Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth." But Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come from Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see." Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, "Here is a true Israelite. There is no duplicity in him." Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered and said to him, "Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree." Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel." Jesus answered and said to him, "Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this." And he said to him, "Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see the sky opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."

Questions: • In reading the Scriptures - distinguish between active and passive listening. • How would you answer Jesus’ question, “What are you looking for?” • What is significant about the two disciple’s response, “Where do you stay?” • What is significance of Jesus’ statement “Come & you will see?” “See” what? • What does the terms Messiah (Hebrew) Christ (Greek - Christos) mean? Both words mean

“Anointed” or, “Chosen one.” Chosen by whom &, for what mission? • What does the biblical expression “law & also the prophets” mean? It means the Bible. • Phillip will not argue with Nathanael. Why? What does Nathanael’s question to Jesus

mean, “How do you know me?” The RCIA is a personal journey in coming to know a person – Jesus. In coming to know Jesus, like Nathaniel, we come to know who we are.

• What did Jesus mean by “You will see the sky opening?” Jesus came to reopen heaven.

• Like the disciple Phillip with Nathaniel, invite your friends to “come and see” – Jesus.

A sample Prayer of the Faithful for the vocation of the Permanent Diaconate is below: That many generous men may respond to the Holy Spirit's calling to the vocation of deacon in the Diocese of Venice.

Prayers Needed - Pope Francis recently approved a miracle attributed to Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, making possible his beatification. The Vatican Congregation for the Causes of Saints promulgated the decree approving Archbishop Sheen's miracle on July 6. Another recognized miracle attributed to the Archbishop would lead to his canonization as a saint. The hope is that the second miracle be realized in 2019, the 100th Anniversary of Archbishop Sheen's Ordination to the Priesthood. In particular, two individuals, Robert and Wanda, require prayers for the intention of their healing.

PRAYER FOR HEALING THROUGH THE INTERCESSION OF ARCHBISHOP FULTON J. SHEEN Eternal Father, you alone grant us every blessing in Heaven and on earth, through the

redemptive mission of Your Divine Son, Jesus Christ, and by the working of the Holy Spirit. If it be according to Your Will, glorify Your servant, Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, by granting the favor I now request through his prayerful intercession (mention your request). I make this prayer confidently through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
