Ken TTDI is one of the most cutting edge mixed use developments in Asia and sets the benchmark for 24-hour sustainable commercial communities. This is amplified by the inclusion of skycourts and skygardens that step up and through the building, which encourage the health and well being of the individual. CASE STUDIES

Set in the Shilin District of Taipei, Taiwan and scheduled for completion in 2015, OMA’s design for the Taipei Performing Arts Center consists of three theaters with a total of 3,100 seats. The theatres plug into a central cube, which consolidates the stages, backstages and support spaces into a single and efficient whole. The individual auditoria protrude outward from the cube and float above this dense and vibrant part of the city. While each theater can function independently, this unique arrangement also allows stages to be merged, effectively combining the theaters for unsuspected uses and scenarios.

The building envelope consists of two primary materials: corrugated glass wrapping the cube and aluminum cladding for each of three auditoria.

The cube contains a range of different spaces with different characteristics and requirements: the stages, backstages, offices, rehearsal rooms, dressing rooms, storage, and other support programs. In typical theater design, these spaces are often fully concealed or hidden behind an opaque façade, reinforcing the misconception of the theater as an inaccessible monument. In order to avoid this scenario and create a relationship between the inner workings of the theater and the city, the design team chose to use corrugated glass to create the building envelope.

The corrugated glass reveals the perimeter mega-structure of the cube and its packing of different internal volumes and activities. At same time these elements are revealed, they are also concealed through the diffraction of light by the corrugated glass, creating an image of fragmentation and multiplication of what is behind. The glass itself consists of two layers of annealed, low-iron panes, laminated together with a slightly grey intermediate film for solar shading and energy control. Corrugated glass was chosen not only because of its optical properties, but also because of its inherent structural stiffness in resisting the forces of Taipei’s environment, including seismic and typhoon lateral loads. As such, individual panes of corrugated glass span 5m between a series of layers of horizontal shelves that striate the perimeter of the cube.

While the cube is illuminated and animated, the auditoria projecting from it are intended to read like dark, opaque, and mysterious elements. These auditoria have their focus on the interior space and performance. Bare, large-format aluminum cladding was chosen and applied. The marine-grade aluminum alloy is not coated or anodized, but

mechanically finished to maintain a matte expression of the material itself.

The large format of aluminum enhances the mysterious and volumetric reading of the floating auditoria, while more conventional, intermediate joints would otherwise lend scale and legibility. On two of the three auditoria, the Grand Theater and Multiform Theater, the aluminum panels are dimensioned up to 10m x 1.5m, in a vertical orientation, to contrast with the horizontal orientation of the cube shelves. In the middle, the Proscenium Playhouse has triangular panels up to 19m x 14m x 11m. These dimensions exceed current manufacturing and transport capabilities, so individual pieces will be welded together on-site to create the large panels. As the geometry of the Proscenium Playhouse is also semi-ellipsoid and double-curved, ship-building technology will be utilized for the precision cut of the cold-form panels.

Cumulatively, the different materials of the TPAC envelope reinforce the overall relationship of parts. The corrugated glass cube and aluminum auditoria also achieve a reversal implicit in the initial diagram of the design: that the working infrastructure of the theater takes a central position and exhibits transparency in relation to the city, inviting the public to participate in its machine-like aura.

What initially began as a speculative proposal for a bold re-shaping of the UTS tower on Broadway has evolved as a broader architectural system for re-purposing inefficient and outdated buildings without the need to demolish and rebuild. LAVA has developed a simple, cost effective and easily constructed building skin that can transform the identity, sustainability and interior comfort of an existing structure such as the UTS tower.

The ‘skin’ is a translucent cocoon that can create its own ‘micro climate’. It can generate energy with photovoltaic cells, collect rainwater, improve the distribution of natural daylight and it can use available convective energy to power the building’s ventilation requirements.

A pre-existing building is wrapped with three-dimensional lightweight, high performance composite mesh textile. Surface tension allows the membrane to freely stretch around walls and roof elements achieving maximum visual impact with minimal material effort. The skin is also an intelligent media surface that can be used for dynamic animation and to communicate information into the public realm – effectively integrating principles of architecture, fashion, media and communication design into a new hybrid typology.

The re-skin concept continues LAVA’s research into sustainable public architecture by combining lightweight contemporary materials with the

latest digital fabrication technologies with the aim of achieving more (architecture) with less (material/energy/time).

PUTRAJAYA - Lot L2C5, Malaysia

To be completed in 2013, the building is a mixed-commercial development with two 14 storey tower blocks interconnected with a pedestrian sky bridge. The tower accommodates retail at level 1 and part of Level 3, and offices for level 2 to level 14. The building is a commercial development that is distinguished by its sustainable ecological features and iconic design.

The façade of the building is a crystalline sculpture,

it consist out of a double skin facade system with

high performance DGU glazing on the inner side

and a ceramic fritted glass layer in traditional Malay

‘songket’ pattern on the outer skin.

The building integrates unique Green Design

Features like rainwater harvesting with 100 %

irrigation and flushing usage, several Bio swales

at perimeter landscaping, a landscaped central

promenade to enhance biodiversity and focus

for an intensified public realm and an integrated

building façade of vertical glass sun shading and

horizontal maintenance catwalk access to address

the solar insulation along the entire perimeter of

the building, with integrated green balconies.

landscape in a natural environment. The organic layout blends forms into each other producing a fluid combination of internal and external spaces promoting a healthy living and working environment.

Sustainability was central throughout the design approach, as was the development’s contribution to South Jakarta’s public realm.

The magnificent ETFE dome with retail hub below and multifunctional deck above forms a key focal plaza for the whole development, while carefully designed landscape elements, al fresco dining areas on waterborne timber pads create an alluring experience for the visitor.

Analysing the balance of light and shade, the overhangs and louvers were tuned according to the orientation of the buildings and further complemented by an innovative balustrade overlay inspired by the ubiquitous hand woven Indonesian baskets.

A solar orientation specific, shading calculator was developed for the project and applied to every glazed element to establish the correct number of shading louvers with respect to the variable overhang and solar exposure.

The concept for the project draws on the philosophy that opposing forces are interconnected in the natural world and takes inspiration from natural Indonesia. Elements of architecture are reduced to minimal shapes and geometry creating harmony between buildings and

This ensured the solar gains were kept within limits to enable the building to use low energy environmental control systems. Passive building elements are included in the environmental control system, with thermal mass from the concrete frame providing temperature stability and a high performance thermal envelope to reduce infiltration and thermal conduction gains.

This innovative organic facade design contributed to an overall reduction in energy demand by 35% in comparison to typical buildings of this type in Jakarta.

The primary aim is to reduce water consumption with high efficiency, low flow and high quality fittings. This in combination with the high rainfall rates and a grey water recycling system has reduced fresh water demand in excess of 25%. The rainwater recovery system uses the extensive green roofs and landscape realm to collect water in subterranean tanks integrated with the building foundations.

These two features alone make this development one of the most sustainable in Jakarta and at the forefront of the Greenship rating system of Indonesia.

Louis Vuitton Maison, South KoreaThe form of the facade is a series of continuous concave and convex curvatures with slight angles which will diffract light with consistently changing distortions. These will create almost cinematographic perspectives which will highlight the Louis Vuitton collection and ever changing line of fashion, art, and travel items. These differing geometries generate facetted reflections, which enable viewers, both inside and outside the building, to see constantly changing pictures of Louis Vuitton products, the city and themselves. Integrated with the stepped arrangement of the show floors, the users of the building will have various changing views of the urban context.

Two concrete masses provide enclaves of entry and rest within a miniature public park. The building is punctured with a light and air

tunnel to allow natural ventilation and provide the retail spaces a unique ambiance for customer.

The materials of the building are both artificial and natural. The glass, concrete, fiberglass, and stainless steel will contrast with materials like leathers, rough sawn woods, and plants. The East Facade is composed of a combination of undulating engraved and polished glass from 300 to 200 mm thick and 10 mm moulded plate glass. These combinations of different types of glass dramatically lower the overall cost of the facade while keeping those effects of both interior and exterior distortions at eye level.

SPEAKER’S BIO

Adam Frampton joined OMA in 2006 and became Associate in 2010. He currently leads the design and development of the Taipei Performing Arts Centre, which won an international competition in 2009 and is set to be completed in 2015. Before joining OMA Hong Kong, he was based in the Rotterdam office as a project leader for the concept design of various projects and competitions in the U.A.E., Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and India. He was also involved in the competition design of the Taipei Performing Arts Center from OMA Beijing in 2009.

His independent work on Hong Kong urbanism, in collaboration with Jonathan Solomon and Clara Wong, was exhibited in the 12th International Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale (2010). The continuation of this research is to be published in 2012 as a book entitled Cities without Ground.

Prior to joining OMA, his analysis on the structural design of the World Trade Center, in collaboration with Guy Nordenson, was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New York and has been acquired into its permanent collection. His independent design work has also been exhibited at the Center for Architecture, New York, and the Van Alen Institute, New York.

Agnes Ng graduated from the School of Architecture, University of Hong Kong in 1983. She is the Fellow member of HKIA, Registered Architect in HK, and also qualified as the Class 1 Registered Architect in PRC.

She was the former Managing Director and Global Board Director of Aedas Limited, managed the architectural practice in 11 countries. Ms Ng has more than 25 years of working experience in HK, PRC and Asia.

Ms Ng has been the fellow member of Hong Kong Institute of Architecture (HKIA) since 2001. Ms Ng is also the founding Chairman of Hong Kong Architecture Centre, which is a charitable organization aimed at providing a platform to bridge our general public and the local architecture. In addition, as the Chairman of Beam Society Limited and the Director of Hong Kong Green Building Council, Ms Ng has also devoted her time and effort to promoting the sustainability of the built environment as well as the green labeling of buildings in Hong Kong.

Chris BosseDirectorLABORATORY FOR VISIONARY ARCHITECTURE

Chris Bosse is Asia Pacific Director of multinational firm Laboratory for Visionary Architecture [LAVA], and is Adjunct Professor at the University of Technology, Sydney and lectures worldwide. Educated in Germany and Switzerland, Chris worked with several European architects before moving to Sydney. Whilst Associate Architect at PTW Architects, Bosse was a key designer of the Beijing Olympics Watercube, winner of Atmosphere Award at the 9th Venice Architecture Biennale. He was recognised as an emerging architect by RIBA London in 2008.

Bosse bases his work on the computerized study of organic structures and resulting spatial conceptions. His research lies in the exploration of unusual structures, pushing the boundaries of the traditional understanding of structure and architecture by means of digital and experimental form finding.

Dylan Brady and Dirk Zimmermann met whilst working closely together on the Federation Square project in Melbourne, Australia, respectively for LAB and Atelier One. Together they designed the facades, folded glass foyers and atrium structures over a period of 6 years. From 2003 the synergy of the combined architectural partnership they have developed has maintained an engaged passion that fuses artistic spirit with technical knowledge. In 2010, Pomeroy founded Broadway Malyan’s Research and Development studio – a specialist group that bridges the gap between academia and professional practice by applying academic research to commercial projects in the interests of sustainability and innovation. Projects of note transcend scale and discipline and include the award winning Idea House: the first carbon zero prototype house in South East Asia; Vision Valley Malaysia: an 80,000 acre Network Garden City extension of Kuala Lumpur; the Green Plot Ration guidelines: a method that provides a quantifiable ecological measure to landscaping within the built environment, and continued research into the role of the skycourt and skygarden in the urban habitat.

In addition to co-directing the Singapore office, he lectures and publishes widely, and is the author of Idea House – the first carbon zero house in SE Asia. He is an adjunct professor at University Technologi Malaysia and Mapua Institute of Technology; and honorary professor of the Nottingham University. Marshall Strabala has more than 25 years’ experience in large-scale complicated projects. After 19 years as the Associate partner in charge of Design with Skidmore Owings & Merrill in Chicago, and 4 years as the Director of Design at Gensler, he founded 2Define Architecture in 2010. He is well known for his design work in performing arts, convention centers, and supertall buildings. He has designed three of the world’s ten tallest buildings including Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the Shanghai Tower and Nanjing Greenland Financial Center in China. For his creative and innovative designs, he has been honoured with several of the highest national and international awards in the field of architecture. This includes two AIA Honor Awards, the Burnham Prize from the Chicago Architecture Club, and two ASHRAE Excellence in Engineering Awards, and is a fellow of the American Academy in Rome. In total, he has designed more than 50 world-renowned projects in North America, Korea, China, Europe, and the Middle East totaling more than 2,500,000m2.

As the Director of Sustainability at Aedas Hong Kong, Dr. Chow brings with him 16 years of experience in Sustainable Design specializing in computer modeling and analysis, urban wind environment, solar heat gain calculations, global daylight illumination simulation, building energy modeling, and air ventilation assessment using Computational Fluid Dynamics, which invaluably strengthened the architectural concept and designs of more than 138 projects that he has worked on.

Dr. Chow is concurrently appointed as a part-time lecturer for the Institute of Space and Earth Information Science at the CUHK, and an Honorary Research Fellow of the Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases (CEID), Faculty of Medicine at CUHK. Julian has 20 years’ experience designing high performance buildings and low carbon neighbourhoods around the globe. Originally qualifying as a Mechanical Engineer from Auckland University NZ, he later worked across a number of high profile design practices. He heads up the Atkins Carbon Critical Buildings Technical Network and sits on the UK Government Low Impact Buildings Steering Group as well as UK Green Building Council Policy Committee. Julian’s role across Atkins is to ensure solutions are faster, smarter and low carbon.

Julian is an advocate for sustainable design and has considerable experience with passive and natural design techniques, producing low energy buildings and cost effective services solutions. This is complemented by excellent presentation and concept design skills with a strong focus on brief development, definition and analysis. Julian leads the Atkins building physics team, which focuses on finding the most effective energy balance across the facade, thereby creating low energy and comfortable indoor environmental control.

Julian was instrumental in the design and analysis of the facade for the South Quarter Project in Jakarta, arguably the most sustainable development in Jakarta at present. He has also recently been working on London 2012 with London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games on the industry leading approach to temporary materials specification and carbon reduction for temporary venues.

Karan Grover has been passionately advocating the need to look at ones culture and heritage for clues as to the direction for a contemporary architecture and sustainable development relevant to the Indian context today. He has enthused children in conservation and been nominated a “social entrepreneur” as a Fellow of the Ashoka Foundation, Washington. He almost single handedly won India’s nominations for UNESCO’s World Heritage Site status for Champaner after a 22-year old campaign.

In 2004, Grover became the first architect in the world to win the USGBC “Platinum” Award for the greenest building in the world. He also went on to win his second Platinum Award for the interior of ABN AMRO Bank at Ahmedabad. Four more “Platinum” buildings are in the pipeline. He was recently made the Permanent Honorary Fellow of the National Academy of Environment at the hands of former President Dr. Abdul Kalam in Delhi. He won the US GBC Gold Award for the Keendiam diamond factory at Navsari as the greenest factory in the world in 2008. He spoke at the Clinton Global Initiative, New York at the personal invite of President Clinton in 2006.

Karan has been selected as the winner of the Green Globe Award for Architect, Infrastructure Category from Green Globe Foundation. The “CII–Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre” the first LEED US Platinum Building in India has been selected as the 2009 winner of the “Aspen Institute Energy and Environment Awards”, under the NGO Category recently.

In 2009 Karan has been honoured with three more awards - the ACE Award 2009 by Economic Times; Nirman Navratna Award 2009; and CNBC AWAZ Award 2009 and was nominated as one of India’s top 10 architects consecutively for the last 5 years in Construction World as well as being nominated the First Architect Fellow to the Indian Plumbing Association for his contribution to the profession.

Marina Bay Sands™ Integrated Resort, Singapore (Ongoing, 2008-2010)Russell led the façade team for this major project, being closely involved in the selection and development of façade systems and glazing material to meet its demanding architectural intent. A large number of systems needed to be studied, then drawn together to achieve a complete building envelope.

South Beach, Singapore (Ongoing, 2009 – 2014) This development’s lightweight canopy is its most striking feature. Russell and the façade team have engineered the canopy as an environmental filter – it interacts with the building form to create semi-enclosed spaces below it while its roof catches the wind and directs it throughout circulation spaces for ventilation. In addition to this natural ventilation strategy, façade openings optimise daylight levels through glare reduction, while maximising occupant comfort.

Ir. Mukhtar Che Ali has obtained B. Eng from UPM (1982) and M. Eng from UTM (2010). He is registered Professional Engineer with BEM and also becomes a corporate member of IEM. Besides that he is also a certifi ed Project Management Professional (PMP) and registered with Project Management Institute (PMI). In addition he has successfully attended Lead Auditor course for ISO 9001 as well as ISO 14001. He began his career in Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) in 1997 as a Manager in Manpower Development Division whereby he was heavily involved in developing construction related skill training modules. He has been working in CIDB Terengganu as State Director and CIDB Johor as State Director. His current post in CIDB is General Manager in Standard and Quality Division, Technology Development and Innovation Sector. CIDB Head Offi ce, Kuala Lumpur. One of his current tasks is supervising the development of programs on green technology in construction. Hannes Pfau graduated from the Technical University Vienna in 1996. He joined UNStudio in 1997. Since then he has been involved in several key-projects of UN Studio from the initial design phases towards the completion of projects, such as the Electrical Substation in Innsbruck (1997-2001), the Music University and Music Theater in Graz (1998-2008) and the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart (2001-2006) and the Raffl es City Project in Hangzhou (2008 - 2014).

He especially developed his expertise on the translation of double curved geometries into built form.
