A truck that was parked in Walter Sisulu Drive was relieved of its load during the night. The driver decided to park across the road from the veterinary clinic to get some sleep, but when he woke the soya beans that he was transporting was gone. The driver reported the theft to Standerton SAPS who are investigating the case.

Raw sewage gushed from a manhole in Charl Cilliers Street on Friday, 18 March. Not only was the stench unbearable for a local car dealership, but a grocery store a few metres down the street was forced to unpack foodstuff in these circumstances. Pedestrians also had to navigate through the sewage in an attempt to keep on dry ground. This is the second time this month that the same drain has become blocked. At print, the blockage was cleared.

VREDE - Officers at Vrede Police Sta-tion, under the leadership of the Station Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Xhasa, arrested seven men between the ages of 20 and 36 for crimes ranging from posses-sion of stolen goods, possession of dagga, housebreaking and theft.

Property with an estimated value of R30 000 was recovered. Suspects were arrested in different places around Them-balihle, Vrede on Wednesday, 16 March at about 01:40 following tip-offs from in-formants.

For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ. (Romans 5:17)

If you struggle, as many believers do, with whether you deserve to be blessed, favoured and victorious, you are asking the wrong question. The question you should be asking is: does Jesus deserve to be blessed, favoured, and victorious? Because you are in Christ, having a blessed future is not contingent on how much you strive to be perfect or how hard you work at changing yourself. It is contingent on the person of Jesus. The Bible proclaims, “As He is, so are we in this world” (1 John 4:17). Does Jesus deserve to be blessed, favoured, and victorious? Then so do you! This is what being in Christ Jesus is. It means that today God assesses you and sees you based on the perfection of Jesus Christ.

Jesus’ righteousness is your righteousness.

In fact, the Bible explains that because Jesus, who knew no sin, became sin for us, we are now the righteousness of God in Christ (2 Cor 5:21). “Righteousness” is a legal term. It means to have right standing before God. Vine’s Expository Dictionary of Biblical Words defines righteousness as “that gracious gift of God to men whereby all who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ are brought in right relationship with God.” In other words, your right standing before God is based upon Jesus’ right standing before God. He purchased it for you at the cross. When you received Him as your Lord and Saviour, He took away all your unrighteousness once and for all and gave you His gift of righteousness. It can only be received by your right believing in Jesus.

And do you know what happens when you receive this gift of righteousness? The Bible declares that “those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ” (Rom. 5:17).

STANDERTON - A well-known and loved couple, Peter and Norma Daniel, will be retiring at the end of March. Peter started his career as a pharmacist in 1974 at P Daniel & Fourie under the watchful eye of Marie Joubert. Peter said that during that practical year he learned a whole lot about the apothecary.

Peter and Norma studied together at Rhodes University where after Norma did locum work in Vanderbijlpark. They were married in 1981 and Norma moved to Standerton where she worked at Standerton Apteek.

In 1996 Daniel & Fourie, Standerton Apteek, Saads and Ledikers Pharmacies merged and formed Maximed 1 and 2. Peter’s grandfather started the KPP factory in 1917 which his father later took over. The factory was sold in 1980.

Peter is still very active in his duties at Standerton Marathon Club and at the Lions Club in Standerton where he is Club President. He was also a member of the Round Table until he turned 41. Peter said that he will still locum at Maximed, but will definitely travel a lot more. As Peter is an avid bird lover and watcher, one of the first places he and Norma will visit is the Kgalagadi Nature Reserve. JD

Adieu to an institutionThe gracious gift of righteousness

After almost 42 years as pharmacists in Standerton, Peter Daniel and his wife Norma have decided it is time to hand over the baton. Peter will still do some locum work but they plan to travel a whole lot more. Norma was attending a client (as is usually the case in a busy pharmacy) when the photo was taken.

STANDERTON – Sakhile SAPS have issued a stern warning to all liquor trad-ers, stating that they must comply with the conditions of their trading licenses or they will face the full might of the law. Lieu-tenant Colonel Mbatha, the Station Com-mander, is concerned that liquor traders are operating outside stipulated times. Some close their business in the morning hours, particularly over the weekend. He men-tioned that most cases, such as rape, rob-bery, assault, drunken and reckless driving, are committed when people leave taverns whilst intoxicated.

“The law and the liquor act states that all liquor stores are opened from 08:00 to 20:00 Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:00 on Saturday, but no liquor store should be open on Sundays. On public holidays the same condition applies. Christmas Day

and Good Friday are the only days except for Sundays when liquor stores are also closed for business.

Tavern trading hours should be as fol-lows: Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 24:00. Sundays and public holidays from 10:00 to 20:00,” said Lt Col Mbatha.

Lt Col Mbatha added that police will intensify operations on liquor trading busi-nesses and enforce compliance. Those found on the wrong side of the law will forfeit their operating licenses. In conclu-sion, Lt Col Mbatha said that he is in talks with the Lekwa Liquor Traders Association to arrange a general meeting with the law enforcement agencies.

He urges liquor operators to personally attend the meeting instead of sending af-filiates. The date and venue will be com-municated soon. DM

STANDERTON - The DA in Mpumalanga condemns the actions of Lekwa Local Municipality in Standerton for failing to pay pension and medical contributions of its employees and councillors. This, according to DA councillors, has been ongoing for the past three months. The question is where has the money gone to?

The failure to contribute to the pension fund was confirmed in a correspondence from the Municipal Councillors Pension Fund (MCPF) and the DA is in possession of the e-mail dated 3 February. In the email it states: “Honourable Councillor, please note the payment for the December contribution has not yet been made. We have escalated the issue and await feedback from our provincial trustees.”

This has resulted in employees embarking on a strike and has subsequently called for the firing of Municipal Manager, Linda Tshabalala. The workers want Tshabalala to be fired because they feel the contracted services in the municipality are an unnecessary expenditure. The strike which has been on-going for three weeks, is also affecting Lekwa residents as rubbish was not collected for the

same period and there’s constant water supply interruption.

Lekwa Municipality is clearly struggling and in need of a change in leadership. Lekwa is one of the Municipalities that has received threats from Eskom where it states that electricity will be cut in April if they don’t settle outstanding debt of over R200 million.

Overall, the municipality has a debt of R422 million; this includes the R213 million owed to Eskom, R114 million owed to the Department of Transport and R95 million owed to the Water Board. The municipality has a contractual duty to contribute to their employees’ medical aid and pension fund.

The DA does not understand why the municipality is failing to do so and calls on the provincial government and the Department of Cooperative Governance (CoGTA) to urgently intervene in this matter.

They must put this municipality under administration as its leadership has proved that it is incapable to deal with finances resulting in poor to no service delivery to the community of Lekwa. (Councillor Angel Khanyile, DA Councillor: Lekwa Local Municipality) JD

Elke SMS kos R1. JD

JD

STANDERTON - “A small amount of blood can save someone’s life.”

This is the passionate plea from the South African National Blood Service ahead of the Easter weekend. The SANBS have mobilized a donating point which will travel to various points in our town. Members of the public are requested to donate blood to save the lives of fellow human beings. Road accidents claim hundreds of lives every year and someone’s life could be saved if blood is available when most needed.

You can make that possible. Look out for the SANBS caravan around

town or visit their local branch at the Junxion Shopping Centre. DM

JD

STANDERTON - An employee broke into his boss’ workshop and stole tools in order to make a quick buck. When the shop owner and some of his staff members arrived for work on Friday, 11 March, they were greeted by a wide open main door at a store in Factory Street in the industrial area.

The owner suspected one employee who had been absent from work since the be-ginning of the week.

On his way to open a case of business burglary at Standerton Police Station, he spotted the employee next to the railway station. When the man saw his boss he acted suspicious. The boss immediately called the SAPS, but before they arrived,

the man had run away. The shop owner followed him until police arrived. The 25-year-old suspect was searched by po-lice and found keys for the business vehi-cle in his pocket. He was taken to the Po-lice Station for questioning where he con-fessed that he broke into the workshop. He reportedly led the police to an abandoned house next to the railway station where all the stolen goods were recovered from in-side the ceiling.

The shop owner positively identified the goods and the suspect was arrested on a charge of business burglary.

The SAPS confirmed that the suspect was due to appear in court on Monday, 14 March. DM

PERDEKOP - Improving access to high quality education and training is one of the key strategic priorities of Gert Sibande TVET College. In an effort to expand its footprint to the rural areas of the province, the college recently opened a new campus in Perdekop that offers Office Administration and Primary Agriculture.

The new Perdekop Campus was an initiative of the community of Perdekop that became a reality due to the support of the Premier of Mpumalanga, Honourable DD Mabuza.

A gazette was published in December 2015 that pronounced the closure of Perdekop Agriculture School. Gert Sibande TVET College will phase in more programmes as the school phases out its programmes. Most teachers from the school will be transferred to the college over the next few years.

The Campus began enrolling students in January and reached its full capacity on the second day of registration. This was made possible by the Department of Higher Education and Training’s (DHET) bursary scheme which enables students from poor homes “fee-free education”. In total, 160 students were enrolled. Gert Sibande

TVET College seeks to meet the demands of industry, business and all employees by offering relevant and responsive programmes. Primary Agriculture is one of the courses that is in demand in Mpumalanga due to the fact that many parts of the province are farming areas. Primary Agriculture will afford many young people the opportunity to become involved in agriculture.

The news of the new campus spread like wildfire. Prospective students from as far as Nelspruit came to enquire about the new campus that was offering a course in Primary Agriculture. Mthokozisi Mbatha, a level 2 Primary Agriculture student, came all the way from Middelburg to enrol for Primary Agriculture. “Agriculture is something that is in the family and I have a passion for it. It’s something I wanted to do from a very young age and when I heard that Gert Sibande TVET College is offering it, I told myself I am going to register at the college,” Mthokozisi said.

Buhle Mtolo, a level 2 Primary Agriculture student from Volksrust, also said she was excited when she heard that Gert Sibande TVET College will be opening a new campus in Perdekop that will offer Primary Agriculture.

Mr William Mputi was assigned to manage the campus. Mr Mputi voiced his appreciation to the Department of Basic Education, who supports this project. He pledged that with the support of all stakeholders, Perdekop Campus will become the leading agricultural campus in South Africa. JD

STANDERTON - Khan’s Angling and Cycling was the reason for much excitement among local anglers this past weekend when the business hosted a massive fishing expo on 19 March, featuring interesting guest speakers and activities aimed at enlightening local enthusiasts about the products offered at the store.

The event brought together representatives of kykNET’s popular angling program ‘Hier Gaan Ons Alweer’ and two of the Khan’s Angling and Cycling’s biggest product ranges – ‘Super Cast’ and ‘Sensation’ – to share their knowledge and top tips with those present. Schalk van Breda, founder of Super Cast, was first to address the eager participants. He spoke about the more basic components of angling as a sport, such as the proper length of the rod, the colour of the line and different types of bait.

Petri de Wet, the angling expert of ‘Hier Gaan Ons Alweer’, began his presentation by inviting all the participants to pose whatever questions they had. Pieter Alberts, a Gr 8 pupil, wanted to know more about De Wet’s carp fishing techniques.

De Wet explained that carp are usually found at the bottom, ‘vacuuming’ the dam floor for any source of protein. They literally suck and expel the dirt, creating dirt clouds in the water in which to feed. These clouds attract other fish to the so-called ‘feeding ground’ and thereby creating the ideal opportunity for any angler.

De Wet explained that carp are fun to fish in shallow water, as the line can literally be cast in front of the fish’s nose while it is “vacuuming the floor.” His technique is to wait for the fish to suck the hook with the dirt and then to pull the line and reel the fish out of the water. He, however, cautioned the participants that this technique is very precise and takes practise to perfect, but it is very enjoyable.

The group then advanced to a special casting session set-up by the representatives of Sensation at a nearby field. The team prepared several rods with tennis balls attached to the lines in order to test the local angler’s skills. It was here that the experts showed the participants how to correctly cast their lines and even held a competition to see who were the most accurate.

The expo ended on a very positive note and had every local angler satisfied – even those who had come as far as Parys and Vryheid. Van Breda urged everyone to download the Dream Cast app as a tool for different bait combinations and other handy tips when professional advice isn’t available and advised local angling enthusiasts to experiment with different bait combinations in order to get accustomed with different fishing methods.

Khan’s Angling and Cycling is located at 34 Vry Street, Standerton, where Super Cast and Sensation products are available. Feel free to phone them at 017 712 1783 for more information about these top-notch products. DK

Angling experts draw local interest

Petri de Wet of kykNET’s popular angling pro-gram ‘Hier Gaan Ons Alweer’ had local an-gling enthusiasts at the edge of their seats during Khan’s Angling and Cy-cling’s fishing expo this past Saturday. With him is Pieter Alberts, a Gr 8 pupil, who had a ques-tion about De Wet’s carp fishing technique he had seen in one of the pro-gram’s episodes.

“Wanneer ek die Puma’s verteenwoordig, haal ek my skolehoed af.” DK
