    TimeandVenue:Time:2:15pmto3:45pm,Wednesday,25thMay,2011Venue:classroom300300.ShortBiography:MarkDrelaistheTerryJ.KohlerProfessorattheMITDepartmentofAeronauticsandAstronautics.Hisprimaryresearchinterestsareinlowspeedandtransonicaerodynamics,designandperformanceofaircraftandaeromechanicaldevices,andcomputationalaerodynamicandaeromechanicaldesignmethodology.AtMIThehasalsoparticipatedextensivelyintheChrysalis,Monarch,andDaedalushumanpoweredaircraftprojects,andtheDecavitatorhumanpoweredhydrofoilproject.Abstract:TheTransportAircraftSystemOPTimization(TASOPT)methodfortheglobaloptimizationoftransportaircraftforminimumfuelburnwillbepresented.Themethodisbasedonloworderphysicalandcomputationalmodelsoftheprimarystructure,aerodynamics,engineperformance,andflightprofiles,allfullycoupledintosizing,performanceevaluation,andoptimizationalgorithms.ThemethodisusedtoperformaconceptualdesignoftheD8transportaircraftfortheNASAN+3program,aimedprimarilyatfueleconomy.Usingtoday'saluminumtechnology,upto49%fuelburnreductionsarepredictedrelativetothe737800referenceaircraft.Usingyear2025forecastsofcompositeandenginetechnology,upto70%fuelburnreductionispredicted.ThetalkwillsummarizethephysicalmodelingapproachesinTASOPT,andthenmainlyfocusontheoptimizedD8aircraft.Thephysicaloriginsofthelargefuelsavingswillbeidentified.
