New Nelson families have been ripped off they say, after a Golden Bay immigra-tion advisor had his licence stripped two months ago.Steve Wilson says he and his wife Rachel Yerbury Wilson spent their life savings moving to Nelson from Scotland and are now facing the prospect of having to find several thousand dollars to finish a process they have already paid for. The couple paid Glen Standing and his company Living New Zealand £8000, a sum they thought was enough to finish the process of them becoming residents of New Zealand. But Glen had his licence stripped in August by Immigration Advisers Complaints and Disciplinary Tribunal. He was also forced to pay more than $20,000 for breaching the profession’s code of conduct by withhold-ing a passport in lieu of payment. That leaves Steve, Rachel and dozens more families with an uncertain future. Steve

says a Wellington-based lawyer is now looking after the cases, and while they may still have a future in Nelson, they have al-ready received the bad news about their money.“Basically there was two and a half thousand dollars that was meant for govern-ment fees, it was supposed to be put in a separate ac-count that was unable to be touched until the fees were due. That hasn’t happened so that money has gone, which is really gutting.”Steve says he considered Glen a friend before this and trusted him. “We trusted him because he was an ac-credited advisor. We didn’t go into this blind, we did our homework and he was approved by the New Zealand Govern-ment, so we thought we were safe.”

Other issues also emerged, says Steve. As part of their visa conditions they set up a businesses and were given a timeline of when they had to apply for the next step in the process, and when the business had

to start showing a profit – this information provided by Glen was wrong they say and has thrown out their growth and business plans.“It’s really tough, it’s stress-ful moving to the other side of the world and starting a new business, but we were prepared for that and ex-pected it. We didn’t prepare

to have troubles with our visa at the same time because we were told we didn’t have to, everything was sorted, that’s why we paid the money up front,” says Steve.Other families are feeling the same stress, with many taking to British ex-pat mes-

sage boards to vent their frustration. “We also paid him the majority of our savings… now we are not sure whether to carry on with him and try and get what we paid for or just forget it as another trip to New Zea-land to search for a job for 5 of us will be impossible financially,” wrote one poster.Nelson Weekly was unable to contact Glen for this article.Steve says life will go on for them in Nel-son but they are “gutted” about having to find an extra $2500.“We love Nelson, I mean look at it; it’s beautiful and the people are great, but this has really hurt us. This was an accredited advisor and now we are out of pocket and no one can help us. Immigration Advisers Authority has so far refused to give us a bit more time to get this sorted.”Steve says he is resigned to the fact of fork-ing out the money again and still hopes to make Nelson his permanent home.

Students are sweating on a short turnaround fol-lowing an altered school holidays, with NCEA exams now right around the corner. The usual length of each school term was ad-justed to align the October term holiday with the final stages of the 2011 Rugby World Cup tour-nament.Students arrived back at secondary school today and only have 18 days before the NCEA exams take place on November 10, making the fourth term two weeks shorter than usual. But while some students say they are still confi-dent in passing the year despite a bottle neck in the workload, others spoken to by Nelson Weekly say it is finally hitting home that they need to get stuck in to study.Isabella O’Connor, 15, a year 11 student at Nay-land College is doing her NCEA exams for the first time and says she and her friends are more than a bit worried about the short time they have in the lead up to the exams. “I know that all of my friends think the term is way too short and it kind of catches you off guard,” she says. “You’re used to studying in term four but now you have to study in term three as well and it’s all broken up with the awkward holidays in the middle.”Isabella says it’s unnecessary and annoying mak-ing Nelson students align their holidays to suit Auckland. “Okay I love having a world cup here, but it does seem annoying that it screws up our entire school year just for that... the majority of us haven’t had the World Cup [in our region] for a good few weeks.”Nayland College principal Rex Smith says if principals around New Zealand had a say then

it’s unlikely the change would have happened. “It’s not ideal, but it’s something that we knew that was going to happen,” he says. “There was no consultation and I think if there had been, principals would have argued strongly not to do that. But we didn’t have that opportunity.”Rex says Nayland College had already moved two senior prize givings to term three to make sure there are not any distractions heading in to the final two weeks. He expects the well organised, committed and motivated students to be unaffected by the change. “It’s the ones that are the ‘last minuters’ that might struggle. But we’ve been putting the message across that they should put study aside.”Nelson College head boy Henry Westenra says he doesn’t know what to expect heading in to term four, but because he had plenty of inter-nal assessments throughout the year, he admits it probably won’t affect him as much as other students. But he says he is definitely feeling the workload. “There’s no time at all. I’ve handed in an internal only last week of term, so trying to do that, plus study, plus write a few speeches for the end of the year, it’s definitely starting to take it’s toll,” he says.Waimea College deputy principal Graeme Smith says students might feel “a bit unprepared” head-ing in to the exams, if they didn’t use the holidays to study. While Graeme says it was “not ideal academically,” he supported the government’s decision. “This was a trial for the whole country; they were taking a punt I suppose. For me as a community member, I think it’s worked.” Rex and Graeme say students had plenty of warning throughout the year and just hoped they had all listened.

When thousands line the shores of Nelson Haven this weekend they will be paying respect to an industry more than deserving says organiser Mike Smith. He says more than a quarter of all working adults in Nelson have a tie to the industry and it is the largest fish-ing port in the southern hemisphere “by some way”.The eleventh annual Blessing of Nel-son’s Fishing Fleet is scheduled for this Saturday, a shift from the usual timing in July, but with the same aim -- to link the people of Nelson with fishing industry and pay tribute to those who have lost their lives at sea. Mike, the Seafarers Memorial Trust spokesman, says the Blessing couldn’t be held in July because the city coun-cil was working on improvements around the Sunderland Pier on Wakefield Quay where it takes place. There will be the usual fireworks on Friday night, with viewing from the waterfront and the port hills. Flares and fireworks will be set off from 8pm, a later time than usual because of daylight saving. On Saturday at 1pm Bishop Richard Ellena, Reverend Jeff Cotton and Father Michael ODea will take the Blessing service, with fishing boats

lined up in front of the Seafarers’ Me-morial on Wakefield Quay. Music will be provided by the Nelson Male Voice Choir, Nelson Christian Academy Choir, lone piper Perry Smith and the Nelson City Brass Band, and pigeons will be released at the end of the service. “This annual event is a very spe-cial commemoration for those who have lost their lives at sea as well as a blessing for the Nelson fishing fleet,” he says. “We are expecting the good turnout we usually have, it’s a service that shows the important contribu-tion the fishing and seafood industry make to our community.” With the help of the Rotary Club of Nelson, the trust will be offering scal-lop and fish picnic lunches and there will be an auction of the Catch of the Day. Other highlights include a man over-board drill involving the Summit Rescue Helicopter; and there will be loud and colourful day-time mesca-lita fireworks at the conclusion of the event. The Blessing of the Fleet is a free community event, however the pub-lic will be asked to make a donation to the Seafarers’ Memorial Trust to be used in community projects.

Coffee business on the movePomeroys coffee house is moving from the Nelson corner it’s called home since 1995. The locally-owned coffee business moved the majority of its roast-ing production to its purpose-built premises in the Wakatu Estate in Stoke four years ago and general manager Hayden Thomson says the need for such a large site is not as great in the centre of the city. “It’s been an iconic site for us and it was a tough decision to move, but with the majority of our roast-ing being done in Wakatu it made sense to downscale while still fo-cusing on the retail side of the busi-ness in town.”The decision to move came after their lease expired but he says clos-

ing the Nelson store was never an option. “A huge part of Pomeroys is Nelson and we aren’t going to change that.”The new premisis is in the Mont-gomery car park. Hayden says he made the decision on the car park after assessing their needs and looking at other stores in the area. “We had a look around and there is a speciality butcher next door, a fruit and veg shop, Pengino’s; so a lot of destination businesses, and that fits in well with what we do.”He says the new store has a loose opening date of mid-November and will better showcase their spe-ciality teas and coffee but will con-tinue to do takeaways and demon-strations.

Church Steps druing the Nelson Arts Festival. Photo:

Nelson is internationally renowned for its vibrant arts scene and popular festivals, and the success of this year’s Nelson Arts Festival is a true tribute to our local communities’ spirit of cel-ebration, say organisers. The festival came to a fitting end yes-terday with the Bluebridge Family Fi-nale at Founders Park where rides and delicious food were mixed with the cool sounds of special guest act New-town Rock Steady and the entertain-ment of Nelson’s own World Ukulele Orchestra. Music events at the Granary were a huge hit and especially well attended throughout. With the Rugby World Cup on, there have been a lot of changes to the fes-tival this year. It ran for 17 days in-stead of 12 because of the rugby and the change of the school term. At this stage it is still unclear what the nature of that impression had on the festival says Nelson City Council festival di-rector Sophie Kelly. “It’s looking pretty good but there was definitely an impact with having so

much on in Nelson throughout Sep-tember and October.”There was the potential for a negative impact because, as the Arts Festival started in October, there weren’t as many visitors left in town when the big games were on, so they were harder to sell out. “On game day for semi-finals and the final ticket sales were lower as people were into to staying at home and watching the game.”Still support for the Festival was ex-tremely strong and there is certainly something to be said about the par-ty atmosphere and buzz the Rugby World Cup has created having a posi-tive effect. “We’ve had lots and lots of sell-outs, about 15 sell out shows and lots of full houses.” Sophie thinks that the RWC may have got a lot more people out and about. “There’s been great energy, absolutely fantastic energy in the street and one of the real triumphs for us has been Piki Mai.”Piki Mai was a sound and light instal-lation on the Church Steps and Cathe-dral tower that drew crowds of up to 400 each night and at least double that

on opening night. Sophie thinks the success of Piki Mai represents how the well Nelsonians supported both the rugby and the arts over this action packed couple of months. “It’s really great to see Piki Mai attracting au-diences who wouldn’t necessarily engage with

the arts but they are enjoying having this con-nection and this kind of experience.”The Nelson City Council presents the Nelson Arts Festival annually as a celebration of the arts for locals and an added attraction for visi-tors.

NEWS IN BRIEFFIGHTING SWANS: The Department of Conservation is advising people to keep their distance from the white swan on Nelson city’s Maitai River fol-lowing public concern about its aggres-sive behaviour. DOC Motueka Area Manager Martin Rodd says swans are particularly ag-gressive at this time of year, the breed-ing season, as they defended nests. “A member of the public contacted us ex-pressing concern about the swan’s ag-gressive behaviour recently that includ-ed chasing children. We advise people

to give the swan a wide berth. People also shouldn’t feed the swan to avoid it approaching people looking for food.”

A Nelson scientist who worked on the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has been back in the thick of it with the current Rena oil disaster in the Bay of Plenty.

Leigh Stevens, a marine ecologist and oil spill management expert, has now re-turned to Nelson following 14 days in the Bay of Plenty where he has led the envi-ronmental team in managing the Rena oil spill.

His days have been long, beginning at 5am, but he sees a positive outcome for what could have been a much worse disaster as the impact of the spill on the environment and coastline will be minimal.“With weather conditions the way they

were, the vast majority of oil has blown to shore, and the firmly packed sandy beaches facilitate relatively easy removal of the oil by shovelling it into bags,” he says. “It will be a relatively straight forward but tedious clean-up.”Leigh’s job was to put in place a management plan for the clean-up. Helping move that along has been a team of volunteers in the Bay, something sorely missing in the Gulf last year.“This [Rena oil spill] has been one of the most effective com-munity oil-spill responses,” he says. “The speed and willingness of volunteers has been incred-ible. In the Gulf, there were few volunteers as everyone demand-ed to be paid. Here, MNZ could hardly keep up with the com-munity response, but that is our Kiwi culture.”Leigh has been the national dis-persant advisor for Maritime

New Zealand (MNZ) since 2002. He is one of relatively few people in the world who have the expertise in the use of chemical dispersants and the understand-ing of implications of their use in manag-ing oil spills. Guidelines he has written for oil spill risk assessment and chemical dispersant man-agement have been adopted in both the USA and UK. Part of his work involved taking frequent oil samples from the sea to analyse how well the oil was breaking down with the dispersant using a method known as fluo-rometry.Despite the oil washing up on beaches, little oil reached any estuaries, which are more difficult to manage due to seagrasses and less wave activity. “The wave activity can be useful in break-ing up the oil,” he says.Leigh says the approach to an oil spill re-sponse needs to be well thought out and methodical, also considering the urgency to implement the correct action, in this case, the use of chemical dispersants. To be effective the dispersant needs to be sprayed as early as possible, though weather con-ditions hampered spraying initially on the Tauranga coast when the sea was too rough.Leigh will return to Tauranga to evaluate how the management plan is progressing.

‘That’s my Mum’, says Weekly reader

A family show

When a photo of her mother aged just ten years-old appeared in the Nelson Weekly, Nola Hart gave out a little scream. “That’s my mum!”The photo came from the Nelson Provincial Museum’s glass plate col-lection, which features two photos in the Nelson and Waimea Weeklys each issue. The main objective in exposing the photos is so locals can indentify the history of the photo.Nola knew it was her mother, Amy Gladys Louise Nalder, straight away, because she has the exact copy of the photo framed at home. “I went straight up the hall and I said ‘oh my god, look at this.’ It was just unbelievable,” says Nola. “It was all so funny. Fancy seeing that.”The photo came from the Manson collection, which Nola says was her grandmother Charlotte Manson. Amy was born in 1907 and Nola be-lieves the photo could be on the day of her baptism when she was just ten years-old, due to the outfit she

is wearing in the photo. “That could be a ten year-old. I just thought of the flowers and that’s why she could have been baptized. And the bow in the hair too.”Amy was born in Takaka and worked on her parent’s farm. She also helped older people in their homes. She was the second oldest of five siblings and went on to marry a farmer.Amy has been deceased for 14 years.Nola says she is yet to speak to the Nelson Provincial Museum but will do doing so in the next week.Museum chief executive Peter Mill-ward says Nola’s finding is just one of plenty received by the Museum thanks to the Weekly. “It’s precisely why we put it in,” he says. “We have to work with the people to verify that their recollec-tions are correct. We had another example where we found out about all four people in the photo. It’s fan-tastic to have this community en-gagement in the project, it has been extremely succesful for us.”

Nola Hart got the shock of her life last week when reading the Nelson Weekly saw a photo of her mother Amy Gladys Louise Nalder in the Nelson Provincial Museum’s Glass Plate Collection. She says she will provide the Museum with information this week. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

FAMILY ACT: The van Gosliga family are all taking part in the Nelson Youth Theatre show, Caba-ret, which runs this week at the Nelson School of Music. They are from left; Jazmyne, John, Myer and Melissa. Photo: Andrew Board.

For the past three years Nelson teenager Jazmyne van Gosliga has been perfecting her acting skills at a dedicated school in Sydney. She has worked on television shows and other gigs but says per-forming this week in Nelson will be one of her career highlights. It will be the first time she has performed with her father John and brother Myer, with mum Melissa also working on the show backstage. The Nelson Youth Theatre is presenting its latest show, Cabaret, every night this week at the Nel-son School of Music and the van Gosliga family is one part of the impressive show. Jazmyne says she loves acting and wants to make

a career out of it. “I just love it and being able to do a show with my family is just amazing.”John starting acting as a child and Melissa was a talented dancer. They say performing is their “sport” and love the confidence it builds, friend-ships they make and the thrill of stepping on stage. Myer is just as excited about the theatre and says performing in recently-made Nelson film “Kiwi Flyer” this year has made him want to follow his sister’s footsteps. “It’s so much fun, I just love it and want to make a career out of it as well.”The show plays at 7pm each night this week, until Saturday. LETTERSTO THE EDITORThe Nelson City Council Heart of Nelson strat-egy is a living document that is alive and well and part of current council policy. The strategy began some time ago by the previ-ous council and as any good strategy, it is flexi-ble to any changes in the external environment. This current council has continued it, modified it, stopped some aspects and it has also added to the strategy. So a recent article in Nelson’s daily paper was not that clear on specifics but it’s safe to say, contrary to what was reported, amalgamation will not be a reason to stop Heart of Nelson projects in Nelson nor will it necessarily be the reason to stop projects in Tasman; if anything it will of course mean we can better enhance our region as the environment changes. So once more I reiterate for an unbiased view please read the independent analysis of the Lo-cal Government Commission which outlines the benefits and costs of amalgamation and then draws the very strong conclusion that a unified Nelson is a stronger, more efficient, more productive Nelson better able to react, plan, prosper and grow and deliver better gov-ernance for all Nelsonians.

A group of Garin College students have already put their stamp on the upcoming summer, getting their flying discs in BP service stations around the South Island, including in Richmond.Earlier this year a team of students from Garin College entered their idea of re-using old tyres by making them into frisbees in the Young En-terprise Scheme. The idea was one of five around New Zealand that was picked up by sponsor BP.The final winners of the scheme are due to be announced next month but Georgia Goodman, one of the

designers of the product, says it is exciting to have it stocked. “It’s cool, it flies really well so hopefully a few people will be buying them for the summer.”Georgia says because the disc is rubber, it’s really good for dogs, and because it has a big hole in the mid-dle it’s easy for people to catch.BP Richmond site manger, Karen Marfell, says the store was keen to support local talent and the disc will retail for $9.95.The discs are stocked in dozens of BP stores around the South Island in the lead up to summer.

A hell of a good timeHALLOWEEN SHOW: Justine Thompson and Alice Bailey preparing for the Halloween show at Just Custumes this week. Photo: Andrew Board.

Tucked above a custume store in central Nelson is possibly the scariest display in town.Last year Tina Bishop and Sha-ron Page-Moreton, owners of Just Custumes and the Party Shop, decided to “have a bit of fun” and decorated the upstairs portion of their building in a Halloween theme for the re-

gions’ children. The pair do the same thing in December with a Christmas theme. The $2 charge goes towards new items for the following year and as a result, this year’s display is nearly three times bigger than last year’s, says Tina. Many of the items they have made themselves, dedicating hundreds of hours to

the display. They say it is aimed at Children but has enough for adults to enjoy as well. “It’s about having a bit of fun and giving something to local children that is really affordable but still fun,” she says. The display is open from 3.30 to 5.30pm from tomorrow until Monday, October 31.

Local mum mixes sport with artTonight Nelson parents Phil and Emma Thompson will launch Sport in Art, sports-themed educational products for children. The first sporting code for Sport in Art products is rugby, timed around the Rugby World Cup. “In short, we have worked with an art-ist to create 26 artworks depicting the A to Z of rugby, and from these we have produced alphabet flash-cards, an A to Z wall poster and two jigsaw puzzles,” says Emma. The launch is being held at the Refinery ArtSpace Tuesday night. • A quiet week for the Port with the majority of activity being over the weekend and early in the week consisting of five container vessels and a large car carrier the dredge continued her annual program to keep the port depths, a tanker vessel, a fertiliser ship discharged, and seven large fishing vessel movements.• On the port also another Wednesday night race occurred. Many thanks to the sailors for keeping well clear of the shipping and ensur-ing no accidents within the port.• Some of the Masters’ sailing competition also occurred outside the boulder bank. One race on a boisterous day had a “close call” for one of the yachts attempting to return through the cut.• What would you do? I believe a quick pré-cis of the events goes something like this. A yacht was turning toward the port entrance in a moderate to heavy following sea after com-pleting an afternoon racing. As they turned something in the rudder stock broke and the vessel was suddenly without steering. The guys on board quickly realise they were going to be blown into the bigger seas of the blind chan-nel or onto Tahunanui beach and dropped anchor to avoid this. Unfortunately for them they were still in a rough, steep, short seaway which was very uncomfortable. The alarm was raised with a 111 call and the police requested the coastguard assist. The Coastguard vessel was quickly in attendance however due to the steep sea and the shoal water (I am advised it touched the bottom twice) was unable to get close enough to pass a tow line. Surf Res-cue was called to assist and ran the tow line from the Coastguard boat to the yacht. The yacht was then towed to safety. Congratula-tions to the guys on the yacht, the Coastguard and Surf who all displayed great seamanship throughout the ordeal. A good result.• Congratulations are also due to the many participants who ventured into a 1 knot cur-rent to complete the Master’s Games sea swim on Thursday night. This was an extremely well organised event with many kayaks and Surf Rescue in attendance. Well done to the organisers who kept a very close eye on the tail-enders. Well done.

Attention all budding Nelson artists: Dr Sketchy anti-art class is making a spooky yet glamorous comeback just in time for Hal-loween.“A very burlesque Halloween” will run at Baby G’s Lounge early this Saturday evening and attendees are encouraged to come along for an early Halloween experience. In keeping with the theme, organiser Jas-mine Turner says there will be “scary prizes and sinister competitions” and people will be rewarded for dressing up.However, Jasmine says there’s no pressure on attendees to show a high level of drawing skill. “It’s not about being an artist, it’s about having a go,” she says. “You don’t have to draw to come along, it’s actually really enjoy-

able to come and join in the competitions.”Dr Sketchy has been running for two years in Nelson, although the recent cold winter saw a huge drop in attendance.“We had an amazing burlesque performer in the dead of winter and only three people turned up,” says Jasmine. However she is confident that the warm spring weather will breathe new life into the popular monthly event and she has already started planning for the months ahead.Unlike traditional life drawing classes, Jas-mine says Dr Sketchy is not a “sterile envi-ronment” and people can enjoy food, coffee and a laugh with friends while they sketch.“It’s a nice casual vibe…it’s not like being in an art class,” says Jasmine.

In keeping with past traditions the committee and members of the Nelson Speedway Association have spent the off season giving The Tahuna Beach Holi-day Park Speedway in Lansdowne Road another face lift in preparation for the coming season. There has been some more fence re-

Bridget Budget answers your questions

Q: I realized I got penalised for paying my loan repayments a day late every week. I still paid the amount I owed, but the loan company won’t drop the penalty. I don’t think I should have to pay it. What should I do?

A: If you feel that these penalties are unfair, I suggest you follow the complaints procedure of the loan company. 1. Check your loan agreement or the company website for instructions on how to make a complaint. 2. If this is not apparent, phone the company and express your wish to make a complaint. It is up to the company to listen to your complaint and give it fair consideration. 3. If they do not, then you can take it to their external disputes resolution scheme provider such as the Banking Ombudsman. The Fair Trading Act states that the trader must not mislead consumers, give them false information, or use unfair trading practices. The Consumer Guarantee Act states that services must be provided at a reasonable price.

“Family, work, then Lions.” That’s the order in which members of the Nelson Lions Club see life and it’s a rather satisfying view they say.Members of the Nelson Host Lions Club are cur-rently after more members and are hoping to tar-get those new to the region who may have been involved in other service clubs, or locals who just want to do their bit for the region.Member Colin Borcovsky says the club is about camaraderie and giving back to their community.Lions International was founded in 1917 and came to New Zealand in 1958. It is now in more than 400 countries and it is one of the only ser-vice clubs that are allowed in China.Over the years the Nelson Lions Club has raised more than $250,000 which has been spent or do-nated to groups in the Nelson region.

Colin says it is one of the big thrills of being a Lion. “That you are able to give something back and you can usually help someone less advan-taged that what you are and have fun doing it. We’ve done the rehabilitation area at the hospi-tal, over the years the golf tournament and we’ve helped the women’s refuge.“We look for projects that will help bind people together,” he says. The club meets on the first and third Tuesday of every month at the Ocean Lodge in Tahunanui. Anyone wishing to find out more about the club and what it does is welcome to give Colin a call he says. “We’d love to hear from anyone keen, it’s a great bunch of guys.”For more information give Colin a call on 547 4182.

Laurien Fijn from Abbey Garden Bar is our region’s ‘hostess with the mostest’. She can take the hassle out of hosting any function from Christmas parties to weddings and birthday celebrations; in fact any function for any size group. Abbey Garden Bar offers a venue with a variety of settings in their beautiful gardens. Laurien is happy to provide food with delicious pizzas, popular platters and well-priced nibbles, but their point of difference is that they also allow, and actively encourage, self-catering. That means you can bring along all of your favourite dishes and use their BBQ facilities, keeping the cost of hosting a function to a minimum. “We’ve found that a lot of our customers can be a bit daunted by having to host a function and don’t have the time and energy to get the house or garden looking fabulous before everyone arrives, and often they just don’t have the room to accommodate a large group of people. They love the convenience of being able to bring everyone here for an easy, fun and affordable celebration,” says Laurien. “And on top of all that, we don’t charge for using the venue.” Call Laurien today to enquire about bookings on 544 1908.

The emergence of the Nelson Under-13 repre-sentative football team has proven the region’s footballing stocks are in safe hands, with many of the players already tipped for bigger things. When Nelson Bays Football regional develop-ment officer George Campbell says this crop of talent is more technically gifted than All White Jeremy Brockie was at that age, you really have to sit up and listen. The team, which finished second in the South Is-land – losing to Otago 0-1 in the final – already features a group of players earmarked by New Zealand Football.Leading the way is playmaker Van Rolan Hlawn-ceu. The youngster, nicknamed by his team mates as Ronaldo, is rated highly by rep coach Paul Cousins and was the tournament MVP, one point ahead of team mate Malsawn Cinzau.Paul believed the side was the first from Nelson in that age bracket to reach the finals undefeated. The team was unbeaten before losing to Otago, and put away a Canterbury side 5-0 in the semi final. “The highlight was definitely that semi final. It

was fantastic, they usually undo us,” says Paul.He was disappointed to lose the final, after dom-inating the game. Nelson had 11 shots on goal, while Otago only managed three. But it was one of the three that counted.Striker Jamie Creswell was the top goal scorer in the tournament with ten goals. But Paul says it’s the type of game that the side plays, that made them a favourite to watch in Queenstown. “We play some proper attacking football, pos-session football. We keep the ball on the ground and use the width.”Long gone are the days of football being purely a winter code, the majority of the players train throughout the summer. Van Rolan, Matt Tod-Smith and James Peters are part of the New Zealand National Training Centre, and it’s those players who Paul says can definitely push on and make a career out of football, as long as they keep up the commitment. “Number six [Van Rolan] was by far the best player at the tournament. He’s been highlighted to be part of the Under-17 World Cup one day.”

Players in the Nelson under 13 rep football team from left; James Peters, Malsawn Cinzau, Mitchell Pugh, Taylor Hosking, Matt Tod-Smith, Karl Rudge, Van Rolan Hlawnceu, Gavin Pe-attie, Blaise Cousins, Jamie Creswell, Sam Wilson, Ben Anderson, Labu Pan, Bertie Fish, Jordi Van Der Geest and Paul Cousins. Big future for Nelson footballers

Organisers of Nelson’s first South Island Masters Games are heralding the event as a great success. The NZCT South Island Masters Games 2011, supported by the Nelson City Council, the NZ Community Trust and many local businesses, has just finished its nine days of events. Three thousand athletes aged over 30 years-old competed across 50 sports in-front of more than 1,500 spectators, making it one of the largest participation events in the South Island.Games general manager Chris Thomas says the reaction to the Nelson games has been very posi-tive. “The games started with a bang, as six New Zealand Masters records were broken on the first day,” says Chris. “We were elated to have so many records fall this year, and then having more than 1000 people at Saxton Field on the opening weekend competing across athletics, netball and football created an incredible atmosphere. It was hilarious fun.

“Throughout the event we heard fantastic com-ments from participants and spectators,” he says.“People have said to us that it was so good they plan to enter more events next time, people who didn’t know much about it have said they wished they had competed themselves, and a lot of peo-ple have loved the chance to both play sport, and visit Nelson.“Once again, the games have brought together a wide range of people, from professional athletes and perennial masters’ competitors, to naturally sporty people who entered multiple events for fun, to people who have not played sport for years but wanted to give it a go,” he says. “We’ve had many 80 and 90 year old competi-tors, the oldest being 97 years-old; heart trans-plant athletes, a competitor who entered more than 14 events, the Nelson mayor, and even former Tall Blacks involved in the games. It has been wonderful.”

Masters Games a huge success

Having a party?

Welcome to the Dawnbreakers Fishing Club. Our Open Day was held two weeks ago and was a huge success. We had over 70 peo-ple attend and most of those were new faces, which would suggest the change of format will be more appealing this season. To all new and potential members, if you require information please contact the club.Unfortunately the weather for this month has been typical for this time of year with a lot of wind and rain, but fortunately we now have all month to fish in, allowing plenty of other opportunities to sneak out and land some fish. Fishing in Tasman bay was beginning to show some early snap-per being caught, but the subsequent rain and dirty water has cooled the water temperature and has delayed the arrival of good numbers of spring snapper. It would seem though that the carpet sharks don’t mind these conditions, as one angler found out last week, with 23 of 25 hooks on a setline producing an excellent hook up rate. Last week was the annual Nelson North Country Club Hunting and Fishing competition. Some members of our club always par-take in this event, usually with good success, and this year was no exception. Those who entered all decided to fish the Friday night and Saturday morning to maximise fishing time. Those who fished the Kenepuru had rods going off at regular intervals but unfortunately they weren’t our friend the snapper, but rather large seven gill sharks in plague-like numbers. Not one snapper was landed over both days, which possibly means that with all the fresh dirty water it may also be a few weeks before the Kenepuru starts to improve. However there was no such problem in Stephens Passage as sev-eral club members landed numerous kingies up to 20 kilos and snapper up to 9 kilos. Between them they won nearly every sec-tion on offer, and all in all a top Dawnbreakers effort. The clubs new kayaking fraternity have also been enjoying some excellent fishing in Delaware Bay, landing some fine gurnard. I have also heard reports of some big snapper being caught there as well. French Pass is just beginning to welcome some school snapper on their way into the Sounds along with a few kingfish.Dawnbreakers Target Species this month is Kahawai, there is no minimum size and bag limit is 20 per day.Areas: It can be caught almost anywhere around Nelson and Mar-lborough. During October large schools can be found feeding on whitebait close to river mouths and along the Boulder Bank and inner harbour. Fish early morning or later in the day to produce best results but can be caught all day long. Surfcasting at Tahuna beach can produce some excellent fish.Equipment: Light spinning gear with small metal lures like a trout silver toby make ideal Kahawai catchers. Find a work up and cast along the edges of it and retrieve the lure as fast as possible.Flasher rigs with small baits work well. Any red and green colours do the business.Metal jigs and slow jigs work very well also, so are worth a go.Tips: Bleed your fish as soon as you catch it by cutting its throat and a cut across the tail works as well. Get it on the ice and smoke it when at home, enjoy.

Got a Sport Story?

International sport is set to knock on Saxton Oval’s door now that its multi-million dollar pavilion is complete. The pavilion divides the all-weather athletics track and the cricket oval and is set to be publicly unveiled on November 11 at 10:30am.The pavilion cost $3.8 million will provide facilities for cricket, athletics and football. Nelson City Council's principal advisor for reserves and community facilities, Andrew Petheram, says the pavilion is even better than he first thought. “You see a plan and you work through a plan, but it’s not until it’s actually on the ground, and it’s completed in 3D, that you really get the feel for it,” he says. The pavilion features changing facilities, electronic timing for athletics, a control room for cricket and a social lounge. The electronic timing was tested during the South Island Masters Games.

In regular contact with New Zealand Cricket, Andrew says the pavilion was the finishing touch in allowing international matches at the ground which already features first class domestic cricket. “We’ve been in discussions with New Zealand Cricket and they’re definitely interested in bringing bigger games here. So hopefully it will grow from here.”Andrew says their feedback had been very positive. New Zealand Cricket want a greater spread of first class facilities around the country and Nelson’s weath-er is seen a big draw card in luring international test matches to the region. The 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup will be jointly host-ed by Australia and New Zealand and Nelson can now put its hand up to host games.Next on the agenda for Saxton Field is a velodrome, which the council is preparing the paperwork for at the moment.

Nelson Giants coach and Tall Blacks assistant coach Chris Tupu with a specialist basketball hoop. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Former Tall Black Chris Tupu is lining up his own basketball academy and he’s brought in some help in the form of a gun.Chris will be launching his new academy Toops On Hoops, which will feature the Gun 8000.The Gun 8000 is a machine made up of a net which catches the balls and funnels them into a shoot. The ball then drops through a hole on to a mechanism which fires the balls out in a pre-programmed direction. It machine also tallies your shot percentage, but Chris says the most important as-pect will be not worrying about having to rebound the ball himself and pass in to the players in training, he can now focus on coaching their shooting technique.

The academy is about up-skilling kids, says Chris. “It’s not just about shooting; it’s about all aspects of basket-ball.”Chris is a former Tall Black and has more than 30 years of experience as a player and coach in the National Bas-ketball League. He is also the head coach of the Nelson Giants and is an assistant coach for the Tall Blacks.Chris says the machine could potentially be used in the Nelson Giants training, if the reception is positive. The Gun 8000 can alter the speed of the pass, enabling the player to practice three-point shots. It can also rotate, passing the ball around the key. It can give a player 1800 shots in an hour.

Get your adrenalin pumping at the Have A Go days, held by the Nelson Motor Cycle Club. The recently rebuilt “Rat Track”, the home of the annual South Island Supercross Championship, invites local riders to come along and improve their skills on the new track and try out the changed jump combinations. The days are all about practice, and honing your skills before the big guns arrive from around the country to compete in the National events in January. The practice days will be held on 30 October, as well as 13 and 27 November, and encourage riders aged over 11 years and of all skill levels to hit the track and learn how to jump, put together combinations, and just generally get air time. Those who are not quite so experienced can come observe the skills of the high fliers and learn from them. For aspiring young riders, inquire about demonstration classes and the opportunity to ride the track, to gain skills for when they are old enough to compete. The track hosts the South Island Supercross Championship, next held on January 7, as well as a round of the New Zealand Supercross Championships, on January 8, on behalf of the Nelson Motor Cycle Club and Motorcycling New Zealand. Local Motueka businesses always pull together with support and involvement, Murray Thorn Motorcycles leading the charge.Originally built about 17 years ago, the track

has received international interest, with riders coming from Sweden, America, England and Australia to compete in the South Island

Supercross Championship, sponsored by Suzuki New Zealand. Josh Choppins, a local motocross sensation and winner of last year’s South Island and North Island Championship titles, as well as the New Zealand Supercross Championship title, has called the track home since the event began. Bring the family along to have a go and test your skills on one of the practice

days, or come along to the Championships to watch the local lads and the country’s top fliers competing for the coveted crown.

After moving up a weight division, boxers Gage Brown and Jordan Bowen are both confident they can fight their way to national supremacy this week.Gage, 17, is a reigning national champion, while Jordan, also 17, was runner up last year. And coach Steve Mitchell, of the Fighting Fit Gym, says both fighters will be a lot tougher this year with another 12 months experience in them, leading up to the 2011 Boxing New Zealand Na-tional Championship in Lower Hutt this week. The two boxers will compete in the youth divi-sions for their respective weight classes.Gage will fight in lightweight, while Jordan is now light heavyweight. Both fighters have gone up a weight this year, which Steve says is always the case with young fighters as they grow. And while the standard improves in higher weight classes, Steve is confident his boys have the goods to reach the finals again. “They’ve proven time and time again that they’re at the top

of their division. They’re committed to the sport, they’ve got good skill and they’ve got good fitness levels,” says Steve. He predicts that Gage might be a marked man in 2011, after winning last year and represent-ing New Zealand at the Youth Commonwealth Games in the Isle of Man in September. While the overseas experience was a bit of an eye opener for the hard hitting southpaw, being de-feated in the opening bout, Steve says he will be better for it.Steve says Jordan’s fitness levels will be a huge benefactor this year, while his range has also lengthened over the past couple of months. “Jor-dan is a size bigger this year but he really under-stands what he’s going to do this year.”To go the whole way a fighter will face at least five other competitors, with the competition now fea-turing a record 210 entrants. “They’re fit enough. We’ve been doing this long enough so we’ve got it down packed from everything to their tucker. We manage them pretty well.”

Jordan Bowen and Gage Brown, both 17, will be tackling the country's best fighters at the 2011 Boxing New Zealand National Championship in Lower Hutt this week. Gage is a former fly weight national champion. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
