Welcome to Term 3 Welcome back to all students and families returning to the College at both campuses this week after a well-earned break! It has been terrific to see the familiar faces of students and staff happily return to their routines and take up the many opportunities in place at Trinity this week.

I take this opportunity to especially welcome the following new students and their families to the Trinity community for the first time:

- Hayley Deval (Little Tackers) - Cameron Deval (Yr 1, Wodonga) - Storm Tanuvasa (Yr 1, Albury) - Stavros Andronicos (Yr 2, Albury) and - Alex Thurling (Yr 7, Albury)

I trust that the first few days for these students have been very positive for them and we look forward to working with them and their families in the years ahead!

This term we welcome back to the Albury campus from long service leave Ms Davina Gibb and Mrs Tess Darts, who has taken on the lead teacher role for the Mrs Hilary’s Year 2 class. Mrs Darts is well known to the College community via her work in Year 2 last year.

Term 3 is shaping up to be a very busy term across the board and I am looking forward to witnessing our students shining in their academic and co-curricular pursuits!

Principal’s Study Leave I am very happy to be back at Trinity after my study leave last term. The trip to the UK and parts of Europe turned out to be tremendous on all accounts and I am very grateful for the opportunities that it presented me. A number of people have asked what the highlight of the trip was but it has been virtually impossible for me to single out just one!

The generosity of the host schools was overwhelming and I thoroughly enjoyed engaging with the Heads and other key personnel of these schools in wide ranging discussions over the course of two or three days in some instances. Visiting schools which are well organised, respected and successful provides, in my opinion, rich professional development opportunities for those involved.

Christ’s Hospital School, West Sussex – the first school visited by Mr & Mrs O’Connor

In many of the schools in which I spent time last term, I enjoyed many of these opportunities and a genuine sense of affirmation that Trinity, as a relatively young independent school, is certainly heading very much in the right direction in terms of its academic or teaching and learning programs, its commitment to the significance of the pastoral care and well-being of students and the programs that have been developed in relation to the professional development and appraisal of staff.

As well, I have established links with schools in the UK which will hopefully lead to opportunities in the future for the College community, whether these be in the form of GAP student possibilities, school tours or staff exchanges.

My time in the UK also highlighted the importance of the financial support we receive from the governments of the day as an independent school. My colleague Principals in the UK were clearly envious of the recurrent funding which is provided to schools in the independent or non-government school sector in Australia.

This does not exist at all in the UK and therefore independent schools have to charge their families significantly higher fees to cover costs and provide resources for their students. Capital developments in these places again are fully self-funded and the costs of these are passed onto families in the form of fees or levies. The independent school sector educates

approximately 7% of the student population in the UK compared with the higher rates in Australia of 14.3% (independent sector only) and 34.9% in the non-government sector (independent and Catholic schools combined).

Following the visits to schools in the UK, I enjoyed the opportunity to briefly visit some key sites on the Western Front in Northern France. As a teacher of Modern History and World War I for more than 20 years, this opportunity was incredibly meaningful and poignant for me. The opportunity to explore these places and reflect on their significance was very powerful and in many ways brought together in a more realistic way the experience and significance of WWI.

The study leave last term also provided me with time to reflect on the tremendous progress that has been made at Trinity over the years, the future of the College and many other worthwhile considerations. We have much of which we can be rightly proud and we should continue with our good work sure in the knowledge that even though we are a young independent school, by any measure, we are headed on the right course towards being the school of choice for students, parents and staff in the Albury-Wodonga region and to achieving much of what we consider so vital in terms of the mission and values of the College.

Of course, during my study leave, the College was left in the very capable hands of Mr Peter O’Neill as Acting Principal; Mr Malcolm Thomas took on the role of Acting Deputy Principal and Mrs Lorraine Willis, Acting Head of Senior School.

I wish to pay genuine tribute to these colleagues and I was very pleased to return to my role to find that all was in very good order and that these offices were carried out with real professionalism and enthusiasm! My sincere thanks to Mr O’Neill, Mr Thomas and Mrs Willis!

FAME! – don’t miss it! For many weeks now the cast and crew of Senior School students and staff have been busily preparing to present their version of FAME to the College and wider community! I would encourage all Trinity students and families to support the Senior School musical production by coming along to one of the two performances next week: Thursday, 1 August and Friday, 2 August starting at 7pm in the College’s Multi-Purpose Hall. I have purchased tickets for the opening night and can’t wait to witness the production next week!

Trinity students continue to shine on the stage and on these occasions I am always blown away by their ability to step up and perform at very high levels! After months of rehearsals and lots of hard work behind the scenes, I am sure that we are set to witness something rather special next week with FAME! Come along and enjoy another stellar performance at Trinity!

I take this opportunity to wish everyone involved in FAME the very best next week – “Break a leg” as they say! I am sure that it will be a huge success and a really enjoyable and rewarding experience! For ticket bookings, please visit www.trybooking.com.au/DCLM; Tickets are $15 per adult and $10 per child/concession.

From the Deputy Principal Turn it Around in Year 11 open morning Trinity College will run its first Turn It Around In Year 11 open morning (for students not currently enrolled at Trinity) on Wednesday, 7 August from 9.30-11am, to showcase how the College can help students reach their full potential in Years 11 and 12. We are inviting the public, through a radio campaign on Star FM and through The Border Mail, to come along and see our senior classes in action, talk to teachers and experience the Trinity atmosphere.

During the morning we will introduce our Olivia Jones Scholarship for Year 11 students. Olivia was a foundation student in 2002, a member of the College’s first HSC cohort and the College’s first dux in 2007.

Peter O’Neill Deputy Principal

From the Director of Studies Year 8 and Year 10 Subject Information Evenings & Year 12 Trial HSC Exams

Parents of Year 10 Students: I am sure that our Year 10 students are excited by the prospect of selecting subjects that capture their interests, enhance their skills and assist them to pursue a pathway beyond school. This is a reminder that the Subject Information Evening for Year 11 2014 is taking place Tuesday 6 August from 7pm in the Multi-Purpose Hall. Year 10 students are looking forward to putting their questions to the many teachers who will be there. It will be great to see as many parents as possible on the night. Parents of Year 8 Students: Over the next week or so, Year 8 students will be preparing for the Year 9 2014 Subject Information Evening from 7pm Monday 12 August in the Multi-Purpose Hall. The students have enjoyed experiences across different subjects over the past two years and this is their first opportunity to pursue their interests in the choice of elective subjects. Parents are cordially invited to attend the evening with their son or daughter and talk to teachers who will be keen to provide information about their specialist subjects.

Year 12 Trial HSC Exams: The focus of our Year 12 students is firmly on the Trial Examination which commences Wednesday 14 August. For all students, these exams figure as significant assessment items that will assist in determining the assessment component of their final HSC mark. The students are busy honing their study schedule in order to maximise their results in this important set of exams. Further information about the Trial Examination will appear in next week’s newsletter.

If you have any queries about either of the Subject Information Evenings, or about the Trial HSC Examination, please contact Ms Kym Armstrong at the College.

From the College Chaplain

It’s not God I’ve got the problem with, it’s those so called Christians!

I have heard people say this statement before, and I often ask myself have they got a point? Judgmental, holier than thou types can drive people around the bend – and right out of church. When Jesus first told the story of the prodigal son, his intended audience was the Pharisees: the religious do-gooders of the time; and in classic Jesus style, he used a simple story to get under their skin. The older

brother in the story may have known how to be a dutiful son, but he certainly didn’t know how to be a brother. Maybe it’s no surprise the younger son walked out the door. The apostle Paul tells us, ‘Do not condemn each other anymore…’ (Romans 14:13). Power and status over other people can be a serious temptation, and when you find yourself feeling you’re ‘better’ than someone else – whether they’ve left the church or are struggling with things you’ve got sorted – it can give you a serious ego boost. Paul goes on: ‘Decide instead to live in such a way that you will not put an obstacle in another’s path’. Paul reminds us that we belong to God and that God alone is our judge and also our Father. Are we putting obstacles in the way of others coming to understand this? Next time when we are tempted to sneer down at someone else, let us be reminded that we may become an obstacle, rather than a solution.

Junior School Athletics Carnival With the fine weather on our side, the Trinity Junior School Athletics Carnival was a huge success. Held on the last Wednesday of Term 2 the Junior School students from both campuses were able to compete in a range of track and field events. Our Year 3 to 6 students started the day off first with the gruelling 800 metre track event. It was evident the students who had put in the hard work leading up to the day and also highlighted the success of the College’s T-Mac program with many from this training group being first across the line.

Kelton was awarded champion house for the third year in a row. It was a tight battle for second, though Rosborough broke through. It will make for an interesting carnival next year with all the 12/13 Age and Runner Up Champions coming from Kelton.

It was great to see the enthusiasm shown by all our younger grade students when they joined the rest of the Junior School to compete in their novelty events. It was fantastic to see them give their all and learn a little about the disciplines they will soon compete in.

Thank you to all the staff for their efforts in making the day a success. Thanks also to the Year 9 and 11 students who assisted with the organisation and management of the day.

BIPSA will be hosted by Trinity and will run on Wednesday 7 August. All students successful in making this team should have already received an information note. Students who came

FAME – THE MUSICAL

It is nothing short of a global phenomenon. First came the hit motion picture, then the long-running television series. Now the screen sensation of the 1980's is the stage sensation of the 1990's and beyond!

Set during the last years of New York City's celebrated High School for the Performing Arts on 46th Street (1980-1984), FAME – THE MUSICAL is a bittersweet but ultimately inspiring story of a diverse group of students as they commit to four years of gruelling artistic and academic work. With candour, humour and insight, the show explores the issues that confront many young people today: issues of prejudice, identity, self-worth, literacy, sexuality, substance abuse and perseverance.
