STELLAR SEASON FOR WAIKATO STUD

Waikato Stud has enjoyed another stellar season with 13 stakes-winning graduates off the Matamata farm headed by Pins’ son Madison County and Savabeel’s daughter Savvy Coup.

The former won the Gr.2 Hawke’s Bay Guineas before heading south to claim the Gr.1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas and was also victorious in the Gr.1 Levin Classic. He also won the Gr.2 Hawke’s Bay Guineas and placed in the Karaka 3YO Classic.

The Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained gelding also acquitted himself well during an Australian campaign that saw him finish runner-up in both the Gr.1 Australian Derby and the Gr.2 Tulloch Stakes.

Out of an unraced mare by former stud resident No Excuse Needed, Madison County was a $36,000 Karaka purchase for the China Horse Club.

“It’s been another huge season for the team and we’re so thrilled with the results achieved by horses bred and sold by Waikato Stud,” Mark Chittick said.

“It is very rewarding to see all of our stallions’ progeny doing so well. Breeding horses is our passion, and we love seeing people enjoying success with Waikato Stud sired horses.

“Madison County has been the standout three-year-old in New Zealand this year. What he has achieved on the track is staggering and we can’t wait to see what he achieves in the upcoming season.”

Last season’s Gr.1 New Zealand Oaks winner Savvy Coup added the Gr.1

Livamol Classic to her record and finished second in the Gr.1 Windsor Park Plate under the guidance of trainers Michael and Matthew Pitman.

The daughter of the unraced Pins mare Eudora was bought for $65,000 by the Bruford and Coupland families and was subsequently sold at the end of her career at the Magic Millions Broodmare Sale for A$1 million to the closing bid of Coolmore Stud.

Surely Sacred was a $160,000 Karaka purchase for Raffles Racing and he made giant strides in his classic year to win the Gr.2 Auckland Guineas and the Gr.2 Avondale Guineas and also ran second in the Gr.2 Bonecrusher

Stakes.

The Tony Pike-trained Rock ‘n’ Pop gelding campaigned successfully across the Tasman and was rewarded with a third placing in the Gr.1 Australian Derby.

Zabeel’s son Ocean Emperor ended his final season before going to stud with a victory in the Gr.2 Tauranga Stakes. The classy entire was purchased for $450,000 at Karaka in 2013 by trainer Gary Hennessy, who will stand him at stud.

The Waikato Stud colours were to the fore with Savabeel’s quality daughter Love Affair, who won the Gr.3 Eagle Technology Stakes and was runner-up in the Gr.3 Spring Sprint. The farm also enjoyed stakes success with Pins mares Residential and Flamingo who will join the WS broodmare band this spring.

Residential was successful in the Gr.3 South Island Breeders’ Stakes and placed in the Gr.3 Canterbury Gold Cup and the Listed Easter Cup and Flamingo won the Listed Wairarapa Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes.

SAVABEEL CONTINUES HIS REIGN

The all-conquering Savabeel has won the Grosvenor Award (Champion New Zealand sire) for five consecutive seasons as well as four Dewar Award and four Centaine Award and is nearing 100 stakes winners, including 18 Group One winners.

In the modern era, no New Zealand-based stallion can match the remarkable achievements of Zabeel’s Gr.1 Cox Plate-winning son.

The Grosvenor Award is based on progeny earnings, the Dewar Award is based on combined Australian and New Zealand progeny earnings, and the Centaine Award is for combined progeny earnings worldwide.

He continues to be the dominant force in New Zealand breeding with yet another clean sweep this season of all the stallion awards and he

9 / SEASON WRAP UP

produced 18 stakes winners during the 2018-19 season.

“Savabeel has done it again, what a huge season it has been for him across the board,” Mark Chittick said.

“We are so proud of the results achieved by our stallions, and the exciting foundation they have laid down for the future.”

Savabeel delivered three individual Group One winners – Shillelagh, Savvy Coup and Nicoletta successful respectively in the Empire Rose

Stakes, the Livamol Classic and the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes.

His popularity at Karaka was again emphasised when his son out of Make a Wish topped New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale in 2019 when Te Akau principal David Ellis secured the colt for $1.4 million.

“He was on everyone’s list, and he was probably the best athlete I’ve seen at Karaka for 10 years or more,” Ellis said.

“We’ve trained Savabeel’s two Group One-winning colts, Embellish and Hall Of Fame, and we’ve won 12 stakes races with his progeny in recent seasons.

I can see him running in some of our good two-year-old races, then training on and being a lovely three-year-old for races like the 2000 Guineas.

“He could even run in the million-dollar Karaka Million 2YO, then be back the next year for the million-dollar Karaka Million 3YO.”

Savabeel’s stunning record of achievement extends to a consistent 70 per cent winners to runners ratio and 10.8 per cent stakes winners to runners ratio – both statistics achieved in the 2018/19 season.

BEST YET TO COME FROM SACRED FALLS

10 / SEASON WRAP UP

BELOW / Sacred Falls Photo credit: Sharon Chapman

Sacred Falls has produced two impressive two-year-old winners Shoshone and Vibrato, plus numerous trial winners this season and expectations from WS are that his progeny will be seen at their very best as 3YO’s.

Not considered by his trainer Tony Pike to be a natural juvenile, Sacred Falls showed his class by being undefeated at that age and his brilliance was for all to see at three.

He won the Gr.1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas at Riccarton, the first of his four top-flight victories that culminated in back to back Gr.1 Doncaster Handicaps in a career that earned $4.7 million.

He retired to stud as the highest ever New Zealand-bred stakes winner, and the excitement he generated on the track is now refocused upon an emerging crop of highly talented offspring.

“His progeny are really starting to come into their own,” Mark Chittick said. “Sacred Falls grew another leg as a three-year-old and if the performances of his two-year-olds are anything to go by, we expect them to do the same. Sacred Falls’

top-priced yearling out of Savodara was purchased by David Archer for $380,000 at Karaka where a host of top Australasian judges bought Sacred Falls youngsters.

They include David Ellis, Guy Mulcaster, Bruce Perry, John Foote, Paul Moroney, Tony Pike, Go Racing, Phill Cataldo, Ciaron Maher, Ger Beemsterboer, Roger James, Murray Baker, Graeme Rogerson, John O’Shea, Andrew Forsman, Raffles Racing, Liam Birchley, Danny O’Brien, Stephen Marsh, Bjorn Baker, Chris Waller, Robt Dawe, Richard Freedman and Nigel Blackiston.

As a home-bred returning to Waikato Stud, by another homebred champion sire in O’Reilly, he is from the Redoute’s Choice mare Iguazu’s Girl and the Group winning family of Splashing Out, Shopaholic, Splurge, Omnicorp, Crimson, Pharostan and Vonusti.

TIVACI A BIG HIT WITH BREEDERS

Tivaci / Photo credit: Sharon Chapman

Tivaci has received a warm welcome from breeders since the Group One winning son of High Chaparral was retired to Waikato Stud.

His first crop of weanlings caught the attention of numerous good judges and resulted in him claiming leading first-season sire honours at the 2019 Karaka May Sale.

His top-priced weanling was a Tivaci filly secured for $95,000 and the over-riding assessment from buyers was that his progeny possessed good size, strength and quality.

“As expected, his first crop are beautiful types. They’re strong and have his class and needless to say, we can’t wait to offer them at yearling sales in 2020,” Mark Chittick said.

Tivaci met and matched the best sprinters in Australia and he saved the best to for last when he bowed

11 / SEASON WRAP UP

out with a victory in the Gr.1 All Aged Stakes at Royal Randwick.

He retired with six wins between 1000 and 1600 metres, three in Group contests in addition to the Listed Kensington Stakes, in which he cut out his closing 600 metres in a blazing 32.6s.

Tivaci combines an outstanding pedigree with exceptional good looks and has let down into a magnificent stallion.

His sire High Chaparral was a world-class racehorse and multiple Group One winner of two Breeders’ Cups, the English and Irish Derbies, the Irish Champion Stakes and was placed in the Prix de I’Arc de Triomphe.

Although the late High Chaparral had an abbreviated stud career, he has sired over 100 stakes winners including 23 at Group One level

Tivaci is out of winning Fastnet Rock mare Breccia with his grand-dam Luna Tudor the winner of 10 races including the Gr.2 Perth Cup.

He has covered two top-quality books of mares including the Group One winners Daffodil, I Do and Costume as well as the dams of Group One winners Grunt, Nicoletta, Thee Auld Floozie, Shamexpress, Ambitious Dragon, Brambles, Kawi, Stolen Dance, A Touch of Ruby and Signify.

CRACKING SEASON FOR OCEAN PARK

BELOW / Ocean Park Photo credit: Sharon Chapman

Ocean Park has had a memorable season and hit a major milestone during 2018-19 by siring his 100th winner and his record stacks up impressively against two influential stallions.

He has produced 78 individual winners this term and more winners from fewer runners than his associate sire Savabeel and double the number of winners of Zabeel at the same stage of their careers.

Kolding’s dominant victory in the Gr.2 Queensland Guineas at Eagle farm provided Ocean Park with his 13th stakes performer and followed a succession of Group One performers including Arrogant (2nd Gr.1 Rosehill Guineas, Gr.2 Waikato Guineas, 4th Gr.1 New Zealand Derby), Another Dollar (2nd Gr.1 Queensland Oaks), Mongolianconqueror (2nd Gr.1 NZ Derby) and Rondinella (3rd Gr.1 Tancred Stakes, Gr.1 New Zealand Stakes, 4th Gr.1 Sydney

Cup, 2nd LR Kaimai Stakes). “Ocean Park is doing everything right. It was great to see him recently hit an exciting milestone in his career - 100 individual winners,” Mark Chittick said.

“His strike rate is excellent and he’s throwing some top-quality stakes horses.”

Ocean Park’s run of Group One placings is complemented by quality black-type performers in Ocean Jewel (1st WATC LR Placid Ark Stakes), Seaway, Tofane, Pretty to Sea, Ocean’s Fourteen, Dancer’s Kin, Our Hail Mary, and Miss Valencia.

They have all contributed to his excellent strike-rate of over 58 per cent winners to runners in five countries and 62 per cent in Australia.

Ocean Park enjoyed a decorated racing career with five Group One successes earning him New Zealand Horse of the Year, Champion Middle Distance Horse of New Zealand and Champion Middle Distance Horse of Australia honours in the 2012-2013 season.

By champion sire Thorn Park, continues to produce striking yearlings that have sold up to $220,000 and his progeny averaged $90,000 at Karaka Book 1 in 2019.

ARDROSSAN BOASTS RACE RECORD TO GO WITH PEDIGREE

Ardrossan / Photo credit: Nicole Troost

Gifted sprinter Ardrossan is an exciting addition to the Waikato Stud roster in 2019 with the Group winner bringing a strong mix of performance and pedigree.

The richly-bred son of Redoute’s Choice was unbeaten in two New Zealand starts as a two-year-old, including a runaway win at Listed level, before he was sent to Melbourne where he defeated Group One winner Shoals in a trial before suffering heart strain.

After a six month break, he easily won first-up at home before the ARC Gr.3 Concorde in which he defeated the Gr.1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas placegetter Ever Loyal.

Next time out he was only a head and nose behind six time Group One

13 / SEASON WRAP UP

winner Melody Belle and dual Group One winner Bostonian in the Gr.1 BCD Group Sprint (1400m) at Te Rapa. Ardrossan raced only once more on an unsuitable heavy track at Rosehill, in which he finished a close third in the Gr.3 Star Kingdom Stakes and sadly sustained an injury which brought about his pre-mature retirement.

“He is a beautiful horse. His racing career was certainly interrupted by a couple of setbacks, but he showed his speed and what an unbelievable turn of foot he had when he was as close to 100 per cent as we could get

him,” Mark Chittick said.

“He will get really good support at stud and with his ownership group we will be making sure in the future that a fair few of his progeny end up in Australia.”

The strength of the Danehill blood through Redoute’s Choice remains supremely dominant with 10 of his sons at stud led by current Champion Sire Snitzel having sired 13 Group One winners. Others include Not a Single Doubt and Stratum II.

As well as an acclaimed sire of sires, Redoute’s Choice internationally has 54 Group One wins and 329 group and listed events to his credit. In Australia, he has sired 34 individual Group One winners and 160 stakes winners. His second crop son Snitzel will this season emulate his own sire when he takes out his third consecutive Champion Sire of Australia title.

Breeders looking for early speed will also be encouraged by Ardrossan’s dam Miss Argyle, by Iglesia, who was second in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) at Randwick, the first fillies’ stakes race of the two-year-old season.

TOP SEASON FOR ROCK ‘N’ POP’S SON SURELY SACRED

The home-bred Surely Sacred has been a flagship performer this season for Rock ‘n’ Pop, who is showing a propensity to produce classic and staying performers.

The Tony Pike-trained three-year-old made impressive progress to win at Group Two level in the Auckland Guineas and the Avondale Guineas.

After a solid run for fifth in the Gr.1 New Zealand Derby, he went to Sydney and finished fifth in the Gr.1 Randwick Guineas and third in the Gr.1 Australian Derby.

“The Waikato Stud-bred Surely Sacred has been a great ambassador for Rock ‘n’ Pop and following his performances this season, we look forward to following his career in Hong Kong,” Mark Chittick said.

The potential for Rock ‘n’ Pop to sire high-quality middle-distance and staying types emerged last season in the form of The Mayor (The Lord Mayor in Australia), who finished a desperately unlucky fourth in the Gr.1 NZ Derby.

Twice a winner in Sydney at Rosehill and Randwick over 2000 metres, The Lord Mayor this past autumn consecutively won the Toowoomba Cup (2000m) and Gold Coast Cup (2400m).

A great looking individual, Rock ‘n’ Pop left the Karaka sale ring in 2010 with a $1 million price tag and he went on to win the Gr.1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas and the Listed Karaka Mile and was an unlucky second to Silent Achiever in the 2012 Gr.1 NZ Derby, in which he was checked three times in the running.

Rock ‘n’ Pop, who has also produced stakes performers Go Dixie, Gold Spice, and Rock ‘n’ Affair, stamps his yearlings on type and imparts quality bone.

His yearlings have fetched up to $220,000 off a four-figure service fee and his two-year-olds up to $110,000 at the Karaka Ready to Run Sale.

How cool is this space? This little slice of paradise is HQ for Waikato Stud’s yearling crew and is the perfect place to grab a coffee, put your feet up and talk shop with your workmates

between wrangling/cuddling yearlings.

This beautiful hideaway is one of many areas on the farm which have been renovated and co-styled by Pippa Chittick. You would never guess that it used to be an unoccupied stable!
