Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC)

When it comes to measuring performance of a server in data-base transactional processing, the Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC) is the leading and world renowned non-profit organiza-tion, that has defined various transaction processing and database benchmarks in order to disseminate objective, verifiable TPC perfor-mance results to the industry.

TPC benchmarks are widely used today for evaluation of the perfor-mance of computer systems and the results are published on the TPC website (www.tpc.org).

TPC benchmark results not only indicate absolute performance data, but also disclose accompanying price/performance data. In addition, TPC regards a transaction as it is commonly understood in the business world: a commercial exchange of goods, services, or money.

The TPC-E benchmark suite uses a database to model a brokerage firm with customers who generate transactions related to trades, account in-quiries, and market research. The brokerage firm in turn interacts with financial markets to execute orders on behalf of the customers and up-dates relevant account information.

The TPC-E metrics are given in transactions per second (tps) for performance and US $/tpsE when it comes to price/performance.

PRIMERGY RX900 S1 set a new world record with the TPC-E transac-tion processing benchmark, proving it to be the best performance server ever measured in this OLTP benchmark. The RX900 S1 also achieved the lead position for eight-way server price/performance and a number 3 ranking in price/performance covering all servers in the TPC-E benchmark suite

Introducing the Fujitsu PRIMERGY RX900 S1it starts where 4-socket servers end up!

PRIMERGY RX900 S1 is a new x86 based 8-socket Rack Server, designed for mission-critical back-end services, scale-up corporate workloads and high performance database processing. It constitutes a highly scalable, next-generation Intel® Xeon® processor 7500 series based server that significantly extends the economic advantages of x86 in-dustry standard scale-up solutions.

With server virtualization now moving into the mainstream, not to mention the consolidation of resource-hungry or ‘fat’ virtual ma-chines, demand is set to grow significantly for flexible and reliable scale-up platforms that deliver a quicker return on investment, such as the PRIMERGY RX900 S1. The proliferation of business intelli-gence, data warehousing applications, plus other demanding high-performance back-end databases, makes reliable scale-up perfor-mance crucial for a wide range of business sectors.

Innovative ‘glue-less’ designDriving the computing performance and speed of connectivity of Fujitsu’s PRIMERGY RX900 S1 is its innovative ‘glue-less’ design, where no additional hardware is necessary to run all eight CPUs and all memory slots seamlessly and in concert.

This design enables the shortest route between processors, memo-ry modules and I/O hubs inside a single chassis system. More often, vendors of 8-socket x86 servers simply ‘glue together’ multiple du-al-socket server nodes with additional custom chipsets, which in turn will lead to I/O bottlenecks, longer path routes and additional configuration complexities.

The PRIMERGY RX900 S1 is a far simpler solution as everything needed to create an 8-socket server is inside its 8U chassis. This allows it to scale easily to 64 physical and 128 logical processor cores. The base system starts where 4-socket systems end as it comes with a mini-mum of four cold-swap processor/memory riser cards. It can be ea-sily expanded to six or eight CPU sockets as demand dictates, and the sixteen DIMM slots on each card allow memory to be expanded to a mighty 2 TB of main memory when 16GB modules become available.

Page 11: 26284 Bel 11087 Fts Prim Benchmark en v4 PDF

11

What do these results mean? The PRIMERGY RX900 S1 enables very large scale-up SAP ERP deploy-ment using Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008, and achieves beyond 100,000 SAPs in the SAP 2 tier Sales and Distribution Standard Application Benchmark. This was performed on November 10, 2010 using x86 Intel industry standard server technology.

The PRIMERGY RX900 S1 Industry Standard x86 server technology and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Database solutions are thus enabling new dimensions for large scale SAP ERP deployment, which until now had been the prime domain for proprietary RISC/Unix platform combinations.

Moreover, the new 8-socket PRIMERGY RX900 S1 server provides a scaling efficiency factor - as compared to its 4-socket family member PRIMERGY RX600 S5 – of about 1.96 – very close to the ideal factor of 2 (= 4 way to 8 way scale-up) in SAP ERP deployment.

This almost linear efficiency of scale for SAP ERP deployment makes RX900 S1 an ideal choice for SAP customers looking for reliability, easy manageability and scalability, combined with the flexibility to run Windows or Linux as a foundation of a cost effective SAP solution landscape.

Fujitsu PRIMERGY RX900 S1 delivers World Record performance and exceptional price performance for online database transactional processing.

PRIMERGY RX600 S5unbeatable in virtualization and database performance

Introducing the PRIMERGY RX600 S5the world’s best virtualization server

The PRIMERGY RX600 S5 is a high performance and highly expand-able 4-socket rack server that combines balanced scalability for memory, I/O and processing power with enhanced server reliability. It is designed for demanding IT application loads, providing customers in the upper-mid-market as well as large enterprises with an ideal platform for running performance-hungry back-end services, such as large database systems, ERP and CRM applications, e-commerce sys-tems or as a corporate messaging platform.

In addition, consolidation of multiple server systems or workloads on to fewer, more powerful servers, using latest virtualization tech-nologies, can now be achieved with even higher rationalization effi-ciency, thanks to a doubled up memory ceiling and the 8 times im-proved I/O bandwidth of the new RX600 S5 server. The Fujitsu PRIMERGY RX600 S5 implements the latest Intel Xeon 7500 (Nehalem-EX) processor architecture, delivering a performance leap of up to a factor of 2.5 for database processing versus the predecessor Xeon 74xx processor generation, while still keeping the dense 4U rack form factor.

Page 14: 26284 Bel 11087 Fts Prim Benchmark en v4 PDF

Virtualization – a key enabling technology

Server virtualization has no doubt turned out as the “killer technology” for corporate datacenters over the last few years. The combination of up-scaling processing power of Intel Xeon processor generations and the need to consolidate the physical server sprawl of the data center has made “virtual machine technology” the key enabling technology for consolidation resulting in less capital expenditure and better uti-lization of server assets. The pace of virtualization deployments is predicted to further pick up through 2011, and the average level of virtualization usage will expand beyond the 20 to 25 percent which most large organizations experience today.

…ideally suited to virtualization strategiesPRIMERGY RX600 S5 enables the consolidation of virtual machine farms onto less, but more powerful server instances, thus minimizing system and virtualization management efforts and related costs of operation. Likewise, by enabling “fat VMs” for virtualization of more demanding tier 2 and tier 3 application loads, and exploiting the new I/O bandwidth dimensions and reliability features of PRIMERGY RX600 S5, the next virtualization frontier of running the business critical production applications in virtual machines can be surpassed. Thus datacenter strategies which have recognized the maturity of virtualization, from an enabling technology to a core infrastructure layer, can now be put into place using the RX600 S5 system plat-form.

The strength of PRIMERGY RX600 S5 as a virtualization platform is proven by its world record virtualization performance, in no less than 4 categories covering all the flexible configurations of this outstand-ing virtualization platform.

In addition, using a PRIMERGY RX600 S5 server as the system plat-form for heavy load database processing not only assures a brilliant performance throughput. It also ensures a most favorable price/per-formance ratio for cost per transaction, which is > 40% less when compared to other vendor 4-socket server platforms of same type (as proven in the TPC-E benchmarks).

Its robust cooling design, a variety of high availability features and its extensive remote management solution maximize this systems uptime. The PRIMERGY RX600 S5 is a powerful server platform you can count on to deliver reliable operation and scalable top perfor-mance.

Balanced Scalability means that by adding up processors, main memory or I/O cards to the PRIMERGY RX600 S5 system, the com-pound resulting performance gain will increase in an almost linear way. This in turn requires that the basic system architecture must be designed to support linear efficient scalability.

The RX600 S5 has all infrastructure components built into the 4U chassis. Thus it scales up inside its given infrastructure when adding up the CPUs, the memory boards and the PCIe extension cards, and it does so without provoking changes to the rack infrastructure setup.

The “glue-less” design assures that no additional hardware is neces-sary to run all 4 CPUs, all memory boards and I/O hubs seamlessly in concert. The new Intel Quickpath QPI link architecture, that replaces the old front-side bus system architecture, is directly implemented on the RX600 S5 server motherboard. This avoids any custom chip-sets or external node controllers and cabling schemes to make up for a 4-socket server. Not using any “external glue” eliminates addi-tional points of failure that can result from glue components. As a result of its “glue-less” architecture, the shortest routes between processors, memory and I/O are achieved, paying back excellent performance results with the RX600 S5.

VMmark Benchmark Software Suite

When it comes to measuring virtualization performance of a server, the VMmark bench-mark software suite from VMware, Inc. is the industry's well accepted virtualization bench-mark for x86-based computers, that enables customers to determine the virtualization performance of different hardware platforms and make appropriate decisions for their vir-tual infrastructure.

The VMmark V1.1.1 is a tile-based bench-mark of a diverse set of workloads per tile, including database server, file server, web server, and Java server. The workloads com-prising each tile are run simultaneously in separate virtual machines at load levels that are typical of virtualized environments.

The performance of each workload is measured and then combined with the other workloads to form the score for the individual tile. The benchmark results are reported in categories for the systems under test, grouped by total number of processor cores (64 Cores, 32 Cores, 24 Cores, 16 Cores, 12 Cores and 8 Cores).

The new VMmark V2.x is different in that this new suite measures a cluster of two systems, using additional and different virtualization workload profiles.

4-socket x86 servers have always been a preferred platform for me-dium to large size database processing loads, since they combine advanced high availability server features with effective perfor-mance, rich memory dimension, broad expansion capacities and easy scalability. The RX600 S5 generation delivers a performance factor of larger than 2 against its predecessor generation - which maps directly into enabling even larger database deployment and faster response times for OLTP transactions.

With advanced versions of Microsoft SQL Server, such as SQL Server 2008 Enterprise, even multiple, independent databases, that previ-ously were dispersed onto many different servers, can now be con-solidated onto a single system – for example by using an instance level consolidation strategy, making use of the advances in software and hardware technologies available with RX600 S5. Instance level consolidation with Microsoft SQL Server 2008 maintains the required level of isolation by running multiple in-stances of SQL Server 2008 concurrently on a single server. SQL Ser-ver 2008 Enterprise offers the greatest number of instances per ser-ver (up to 50). Security is even tighter than before, because each instance has its own set of services and resources, and users can be prevented from accessing data not just by denying them access at the database level, but also at the SQL Server instance level.

Of course the implementation of such database consolidation stra-tegies requires a robust, high availability server platform with ample resource dimensions for memory, I/O and processing power - such as those offered with RX600 S5.

The resulting customer benefits include lower cost of transactions, less operational expenses for management of the database servers and reduced maintenance costs by using a homogenous SQL version throughout all instances.

The improvements of high availability features with SQL Server 2008 eliminate the concerns, that using fewer servers increases the risk of system downtime if any servers fail.

PRIMERGY RX300 S6the 2-socket power horse all-round rack server

Virtualization began as a game for the “big guys”, but today it is no longer a privilege only for large companies. Adoption of the benefits of virtualization, such as lower server count to maintain less waste of energy by running too many underutilized server platforms, and reduction of infrastructure management burdens are also com-pelling attractions for small and mid-size enterprises.

2-socket two height units x86 rack servers constitute the preferred choice of form factor, once rack servers are deployed, in large enter-prises as well as in medium and small organizations. This preference is due to the fact that 2-socket, 2U form factor servers offer an excel-lent balance of density, redundancy, expandability and value to the customer.

The PRIMERGY RX300 S6 Rack Server is architected to deliver the right balance of I/O (input/output), memory and compute capacity, and internal expandability (up to 12 internal hard disks) to deliver the most out of its space saving 2U form factor.

Therefore it not only serves as a power horse for virtualization, it is equally fitted to serve demanding business application workloads, medium scale mail and messaging services, business intelligence workloads, small to medium size database processing applications or data center utility services.

In short, the RX300 S6 is the all-round 2-socket rack server, providing great versatility for a large variety of workloads in small and medium corporations as well as for large datacenter application services.Achieving a high performance while, at the same time, contributing to a strong reduction in energy costs, is one of the key benefits of this server system. In addition, it is important to also provide favor-able price/performance metrics, since those will achieve pay back over the server’s complete lifetime.

And the PRIMERGY RX300 S6 can provide a world record based contribution to favorable lifecycle costs.

PRIMERGY RX200 S6 achieved pole position in VMware’s new VM-mark V2.0 industry benchmark. This new world record performance achievement in a multi-host virtualization environment proves the capability of the RX200 S6: Maximum productivity in a 1U housing.

What does this result mean? The compact RX200 S6 Rack Server is usually deployed in high numbers of server nodes that build up to a scale-out computing farm, bene-fitting from the server´s space efficient 1U housing, its favorable low energy consumption footprint, the ease of management and, last but not least, its attractive acquisition and lifecycle costs. Combined with virtualization technologies, the task of running a huge number of multiple workloads - encapsulated within virtual machines on such a PRIMERGY RX200 S6 Rack Server farm - can be mastered with a very high efficiency as regards consumption of available resources.

Vendors manufacture 1U (1.75") rack-mount servers to satisfy the needs of organizations that have limited physical space. Internet and application service providers (ISPs & ASPs), and corporate data centers are likely to need the manageability and space conservation that ultra-thin servers provide. Smaller IT organizations can also start to incorporate 1U rack-mount servers into roles that larger pieces of hardware currently occupy. For example, in most environ-ments a properly equipped 1U rack-mount server can function as a domain controller (DC), DHCP server, DNS server, gateway server, web server or for running virtualized simpler workloads using virtual machine technology. Additional application areas are front-end (tier 1) solutions in modern multi-tier configurations, e-mail services and appliance solutions.

ISPs & ASPs typically use large server farms, constructed by densely packaging hundreds of 1U servers into 19 “ server racks, requesting robust operation, minimal space and lowest possible power & ener-gy consumption. The PRIMERGY RX200 S6 offers the seemingly im-possible: great performance, high extendibility and data center reli-ability packed in a flat rack housing of only 1U - with a significantly improved performance / power consumption ratio. In other words: more for less with regard to data center energy-efficiency.

Consequently, PRIMERGY RX200 S6 has been designed to satisfy the demands for:■ High performance and good expandability, yet a minimum height

in the rack (1 HU only)■ A large number of compact servers must be able to be installed

and administered quickly and easily ( ServerView Management)■ Servers must easily be locatable in data center server farms (iden-

tification LEDs & Touchpoint indications) ■ Excellent energy efficiency (PRIMERGY Cool-safe™ system design

and 92% efficiency for power supplies)

Yet, the small and compact design also enables for top performance achievements. The RX200 S6 server underlines the continuous per-formance improvement with Fujitsu PRIMERGY Rack Servers with another world record achievement on January 25, 2011.

Pole Position for PRIMERGY RX200 S6January 25, 2011: PRIMERGY RX200 S6 Rack Server took pole positi-on in VMware’s new VMmark V2.0 industry benchmark. VMmark V2.0 is VMware’s new industry benchmark, which is now extended to measure servers on both performance and scalability for applica-tions running in a multi-host virtual environment. VMmark V2.0 is a multi-host virtualization benchmark, not comparable to VMmark V1.x, and uses 2 clustered systems as well as new workload profiles, including the virtual machine vMotion exercises in the test suite.

PRIMERGY RX200 S6 achieved No 1 performance withVMmark V2.0 score : 6.81@7 tiles; Using VMware ESX v4.1 / vCenter 4.1 on 2 total hosts and 4 total sockets. Configuration : 2 x six-cores Intel Xeon X5680 processors per host
