The Kingdom in Genesis 1 Uncreated God (1:1) Creation by Word alone (1:4) Creation with ease Sun and moon [gods] created (1:16) Shared rule with man (1:26)3018My View of the Bible's Theme

The Bible narrates God's restoring man to participate in His kingdom rule for His own glorymandated in Eden but lost in the Fall and accomplished by redeeming man through Israel as a kingdom of priests, through the Church proclaiming Christ, and ultimately through the Messiah, who will reign as Savior and King to fulfill the Abrahamic Covenant3319

The Kingdom of God:The Bible's All-Encompassing ThemeGenesis 1:26-28

"Then God said, 'Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish birds livestock all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground' God blessed them and said to them, 'Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.'" Revelation 22:5

"There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever."CommandFulfillmentThe Bible's Theme: God extends His rule to manCovenants3320

Foster Letter 2002

"The 'American Family In Crises Research' by the Southern Baptist Council on Family Life uncovered some disturbing facts. Of the children raised in evangelical homes, 88% leave the church at age 18 and never return."Pastor's Weekly Briefing, Focus on the Family, 26 July 2002, quoted in Gary Foster, The Foster Letter, 10 Aug. 2002, p. 1.82From Carl KerbyFollowing is the entire quote that was in my newsletter. My source was the 7/26/02 issue of Pastor's Weekly Briefing published by the Pastoral Ministries department of Focus on the Family.American Family In Crises Research by the Southern Baptist Council on Family Life has uncovered some disturbing facts that are leading the group to emphasize the need to rebuild the American family. 88% of the children raised in evangelical homes leave church at the age of 18, never to return. The divorce ratio among members of evangelical churches is virtually the same as non-church members. One million children in the U.S. see their parents divorce. Personal bankruptcies are at an all-time high in America. The majority of children in America have less than 10 minutes of significant and meaningful conversation with their parents each week. If you remove the mother, you can measure this statistic in seconds. The council recommends that families set aside one evening a week as a family night, on which no local church activities would be scheduled to interfere. It also urged an increased emphasis on biblically based premarital counseling. (PWB 7/26)Gary D. FosterGary D. But we are suggesting that we need to change the curriculum and the training. Most Sunday school teachers, like most Christian adults don't know how to defend the faith against the skeptical challenges that are coming through the schools, media, science programs on TV, etc. We need apologetics training for the teachers and then they need to give it to the kids.Psalm 11:3 NAS

Belshazzar HumbledRembrandt140

Persians entered under the water gates!Daniel 5(Belshazzar's Feast)510aBABYLON FELL in 539 BC141"Babylon was being besieged by the Persian army, led by Ugbaru, governor of Gutium, while Belshazzar, inside the city, was giving a great banquet for 1,000 of his nobles. Belshazzar's name means "Bel (another name for the god Marduk) has protected the king." Perhaps the banquet was given to show Belshazzar's contempt for the Persians and to allay his people's fears. Archeologists have excavated a large hall in Babylon 55 feet wide and 165 feet long that had plastered walls. Such a room would have been sufficient to house a gathering of this size. Belshazzar considered his city secure from assault because of its massive walls. Within the city were supplies that would sustain it for 20 years. Therefore the king felt he had little cause for concern."John F. Walvoord, Roy B. Zuck and Dallas Theological Seminary., The Bible Knowledge Commentary : An Exposition of the Scriptures (Wheaton, IL: Victor Books, 1983-c1985), 1:1344."[Cyrus] placed a portion of his army at the point where the river enters the city, and another body at the back of the place where it issues forth, with orders to march into the town by the bed of the stream, as soon as the water became shallow enough: he then himself drew off with the unwarlike portion of his host, and made for the place where Nitocris dug the basin for the river, where he did exactly what she had done formerly: he turned the Euphrates by a canal into the basin, which was then a marsh, on which the river sank to such an extent that the natural bed of the stream became fordable."Hereupon the Persians who had been left for the purpose at Babylon by the river-side, entered the stream, which had now sunk so as to reach about midway up a man's thigh, and thus got into the town. 544bThe History of the Persian Wars 1.191 (430 BC)Babylon's Fall (Herodotus)142"Had the Babylonians been apprised of what Cyrus was about, or had they noticed their danger, they would never have allowed the Persians to enter the city, but would have destroyed them utterly; for they would have made fast all the street-gates which gave upon the river, and mounting upon the walls along both sides of the stream, would so have caught the enemy, as it were, in a trap. But, as it was, the Persians came upon them by surprise and so took the city. Owing to the vast size of the place, the inhabitants of the central parts (as the residents at Babylon declare) long after the outer portions of the town were taken, knew nothing of what had chanced, but as they were engaged in a festival, continued dancing and reveling until they learnt the capture but too certainly. Such, then, were the circumstances of the first taking of Babylon."

The King of Babylon (605-562) said:"Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise, exalt and honor the King of heaven, for all His works are true and His ways just, and He is able to humble those who walk in pride."

(Daniel 4:34-37)Darius the Mede (son of Ahasuerus) ruled after the death of Belshazzar, said:"I make a decree that in all the dominion of my kingdom men are to fear and tremble before the God of Daniel."

(Daniel 6:26-27)WHY?THEOLOGY OF DANIEL 1-7155King Nebuchadnezzar's act of besieging the Jerusalem was not only by his own might and strength, but it was God who had given King Jehoiakim into his hand (1:1-2).2. God granted Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the commander of the officials, when Daniel steadfastly resisted the cultural pressure to compromise (1:9).Now God granted Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the commander of the officialsIn the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. The Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, along with some of the vessels of the house of God; and he brought them to the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, and he brought the vessels into the treasury of his god. I. GOD IS SOVEREIGN OVER ALL PEOPLE156

3.God gave the four Jewish youth intelligence in many fields and Daniel could understand all visions and dreams.4. The God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego controlled the forces of nature to humble Nebuchadnezzar through the furnace (ch. 3) and Darius through Daniel in the lions' den (ch. 6)."As for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and intelligence in every [branch of] literature and wisdom; Daniel even understood all [kinds of] visions and dreams" (1:17).I. GOD IS SOVEREIGN OVER ALL PEOPLE 157

6. By handwriting on the wall God showed His sovereign control over nations and individual rulers (ch. 5)5. God gave Daniel ability to interpret dreams and visions that perplexed the nobles and wise men in Babylon (chs. 2, 4, 5)I. GOD IS SOVEREIGN OVER ALL PEOPLE158Daniel answered the king, "As for the mystery about which the king has inquired, neither wise men, conjurers, magicians [nor] diviners are able to declare [it] to the king. However, there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will take place in the latter days. This was your dream and the visions in your mind [while] on your bed" (2:27-28).7. Daniel not only prophesied against Babylon but also later empires that opposed God and oppressed His people everywhere (ch. 2). Rulers of the world fight against the kingdom of God!8. Daniel had a vision of four beasts (nations) that threatened to exterminate God's people. But the Ancient of Days prevailed to establish an eternal kingdom for his people. Thus, God's sovereignty is shown in human history (ch. 7).I. GOD IS SOVEREIGN OVER ALL PEOPLE159

Daniel's friends: Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to the king, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to give you an answer concerning this matter. If it be [so], our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the furnace of blazing fire; and He will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But [even] if [He does] not, let it be known to you, O king, that we are not going to serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up." Daniel 3:16-18 and they were thrown into the midst of the furnace of blazing fireII. PERSECUTION OF THE FAITHFUL160

"Then the commissioners and satraps began trying to find a ground of accusation against Daniel in regard to government affairs; but they could find no ground of accusation or... corruption, inasmuch as he was faithful, and no negligence or corruption was... found in him. Then these men said, 'We will not find any ground of accusation against this Daniel unless we find [it] against him with regard to the law of his God.'

"Then the king gave orders, and Daniel was brought in and cast into the lions' den. The king said to Daniel, 'Your God whom you constantly serve will Himself deliver you'" (Daniel 6:4-5, 16).II. PERSECUTION OF THE FAITHFUL 161

. . . was Daniel cast into the lions' den?

were they thrown into the midst of the blazing furnace?WHY?II. PERSECUTION OF THE FAITHFUL 1621. Suffering persecution will occur in each believer's life who is standing on the law of God. Loyalty to God's Word brings us even death (chs. 3, 6), but God will vindicate us through resurrection and judgment at the end as ch. 12 depicts.2. Through every circumstance of life it is possible to live a life of faith and victory with God's help (3:24-27; 6:19-24). This is living under the sovereignty of God.

II. PERSECUTION OF THE FAITHFUL1631. Persecution will occur in each believer's life who is standing on the law of God. Loyalty to God's Word brings us even death (ch. 3, 6), but God will vindicate us through resurrection and judgment at the end as ch. 12 depicts.2. Through every circumstance of life we can live a life of faith and victory with God's help (3:24-27; 6:19-24). This is living under the sovereignty of God.3. The NT teaches even more on the suffering of God's people:"Blessed are the persecuted for theirs is the kingdom of God" (Matt. 5:10-12)"All who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted" (2 Tim. 3:12) II. PERSECUTION OF THE FAITHFUL164 "If they persecuted Me they will also persecute you" (John 15:20)

II. PERSECUTION OF THE FAITHFUL 165

Nebuchadnezzar said:"Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego, that you do not serve my gods or worship the golden image that I have set up? But if you do not worship, you will immediately be cast into the midst of a furnace of blazing fire; and what god is there who can deliver you out of my hands?"

Daniel 3:14-15III. GOD JUDGES THE PROUD 166Then they brought the gold vessels that had been taken out of the temple, the house of God which [was] in Jerusalem; and the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines drank from them. They drank the wine and praised the gods of gold and silver, of bronze, iron, wood and stone That same night Belshazzar the Chaldean king was slain.

Daniel 5:3-4, 30

III. GOD JUDGES THE PROUD 167MAN'S PRIDE refuses to depend on God and be subject to Him, but attributes to self the honor due to him, This the very root of sin."I. H. Marshall, New Bible Dictionary (IVP, 1995), 995God sent Babylon to besiege Jerusalem because of Judah's pride.

This contrasted with the obedient people of God. Daniel and his three friends did not want to go against the law of God.Chapter 1: And I will pronounce My judgments on them concerning all their wickedness, whereby they have forsaken Me and have offered sacrifices to other gods, and worshipped the works of their own hands (Jer. 1:16)Woe to the rebellious childrenWho proceed down to Egypt Without consulting Me, To take refuge in the safety of Pharaoh And to seek shelter in the shadow of Egypt! (Isa. 30:1-2)

Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help. [And] rely on horses, and trust in chariots because they are many and in horsemen because they are very strong, but they do not look to the Holy One of Israel, nor seek the Lord! Return to Him from whom you have deeply defected, O sons of Israel (Isa. 31:1,6)III. GOD JUDGES THE PROUD168Chapter 2: Nebuchadnezzar's dream was revealed to Daniel by God alone. This contrasts with human pride which has no ability to discern God's message. 2. The mighty kingdoms are destroyed by other kingdoms, but God's kingdom will never be destroyed. Human pride will finally be destroyed!"The Chaldeans answered the king and said, 'There is not a man on earth who could declare the matter for the king, inasmuch as no great king or ruler has [ever] asked anything like this of any magician, conjurer or Chaldean.''Moreover, the thing which the king demands is difficult, and there is no one else who could declare it to the king except gods, whose dwelling place is not with [mortal] flesh'" (2:10-11).III. GOD JUDGES THE PROUD 169In the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which will never be destroyed, and [that] kingdom will not be left for another people; it will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, but it will itself endure forever. Inasmuch as you saw that a stone was cut out of the mountain without hands and that it crushed the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold, the great God has made known to the king what will take place in the future; so the dream is true and its interpretation is trustworthy.Daniel 2:44-45III. GOD JUDGES THE PROUD 170Chapter 3:Nebuchadnezzar's pride is subdued by God's miraculous work in protecting Daniel's 3 friends.

His arrogant proclamation in v. 7 is contrasted with his humble proclamation in v. 29.Verse 7:"Therefore at that time, when all the peoples heard the sound of the horn, flute, lyre, trigon, psaltery, bagpipe and all kinds of music, all the peoples, nations and [men of every] language fell down [and] worshiped the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up."Verse 29:"Therefore I make a decree that any people, nation or tongue that speaks anything offensive against the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego shall be torn limb from limb and their houses reduced to a rubbish heap, inasmuch as there is no other god who is able to deliver in this way." III. GOD JUDGES THE PROUD 171Chapter 4:God gave Nebuchadnezzar a dream of a large tree. Through the interpretation of Daniel, God showed how fragile human pride and might is.

"The tree that you saw, which became large and grew strong, whose height reached to the sky and was visible to all the earth and whose foliage [was] beautiful and its fruit abundant, and in which [was] food for all, under which the beasts of the field dwelt and in whose branches the birds of the sky lodged-- it IS YOU, O KING; for you have become great and grown strong, and your majesty has become great and reached to the sky and your dominion to the end of the earth."4:20-22III. GOD JUDGES THE PROUD 172

"This is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decree of the Most High, which has come upon my lord the king, that you be driven away from mankind and your dwelling place BE WITH THE BEASTS OF THE FIELD, and you be given grass to eat like cattle and be drenched with the dew of heaven; and seven periods of time will pass over you, UNTIL YOU RECOGNIZE THAT THE MOST HIGH IS RULER OVER THE REALM OF MANKIND and bestows it on whomever He wishes" (4:24-25).III. GOD JUDGES THE PROUD Chapter 6:Daniel's fellow officers were jealous of Daniel and tricked King Darius to cast Daniel into lions' den. The death of the his accusers in the same den instead of Daniel contrasts human pride with honoring God.

"The king then gave orders, and they brought those men who had maliciously accused Daniel, and they cast them, their children and their wives into the lions' den; and they had not reached the bottom of the den before the lions overpowered them and crushed all their bones" (6:24).175Chapter 7:

Four great beasts in Daniel's vision symbolize kings or kingdoms who will arise from the earth. But these kingdoms will be finally destroyed. God will give His people an everlasting kingdom when Jesus returns and establishes it. Human pride will be destroyed.

"Then the sovereignty, the dominion and the greatness of [all] the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be given to the people of the saints of the Highest One; His kingdom [will be] an everlasting kingdom, and all the dominions will serve and obey Him" (Dan. 7:27; Rev. 13)III. GOD JUDGES THE PROUD 176IV. GOD'S MESSIAH OF THE WORLD

THE NATIONSISRAELThe Book of Daniel corrects this narrow view by presenting the Messiah as universal and victorious over evil in general.Israel saw their Messiah as only over Israel and victorious over Israel's enemies.177"And behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming, and He came up to the Ancient of Days and was presented before Him. And to Him was given dominion, glory and a kingdom, that all the peoples, nations and [men of every] language might serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion which will not pass away; And His kingdom is one which will not be destroyed."Dan. 7:13-14

Four options:(1) Cyrus decree to rebuild the temple (2 Chron. 36: 22-23; Ezra 1:1-4; 6:1-5); (2) Darius decree confirming the decree of Cyrus (Ezra 6:6-12);(3) Artaxerxes decree #1 (Ezra 7:11-26); (4) Artaxerxes decree #2 given to Nehemiah authorizing the rebuilding of the city (Neh. 2:1-8).

Why do we hold that the decree is Artaxerxes #2 in his 20th year (444 BC)? This is because Neh. 2:12-17 pictures Jerusalem in ruins at this time.215Luke 21:24 Times of the Gentiles

551Raymond Ludwigson, A Survey of Bible Prophecy216Daniel 9:25-27 (NLT)86b-d25Now listen and understand! Seven sets of seven plus sixty-two sets of seven will pass from the time the command is given to rebuild Jerusalem until a rulerthe Anointed Onecomes. Jerusalem will be rebuilt with streets and strong defenses, despite the perilous times.26"After this period of sixty-two sets of seven, the Anointed One will be killed, appearing to have accomplished nothing, and a ruler will arise whose armies will destroy the city and the Temple. The end will come with a flood, and war and its miseries are decreed from that time to the very end. 27The ruler will make a treaty with the people for a period of one set of seven, but after half this time, he will put an end to the sacrifices and offerings. And as a climax to all his terrible deeds, he will set up a sacrilegious object that causes desecration, until the fate decreed for this defiler is finally poured out on him."217An Astonishing Prediction!553The Jewish calendar has 360 days per year 69 Jewish "weeks" of 483 years = 476 solar yearsIssue of the decree on 5 March 444 BC after 476 solar years ends on 30 March 33. This is the exact date of Christ's Triumphant Entry!Compare Daniel 9:27 with Revelation 13:5, 14-15 where half of a "7" is 3 and years or 42 months

553Harold Hoehner, Chronological Aspects of the Life of Christ,139220Mind the Gap

Why the Gap?Why must there be a gap between the end of the 69th week and the beginning of the 70th week?Six Reasons69 sevens = 483 years444 BC 395 BC1 seven = 7 years7 sevens 62 sevens395 BC AD 33Anointed OneDecree552For a dispensational interpretation of each of these six phrases see the exegetical outline of Daniel 9:24 on the preceding pages.222Why the Gap?The six prophecies in Daniel 9:24 could not have been fulfilled at Christ's first advent. These prophecies relate not to the church but to Israel. Has Israel finished sinning (24a)? No.Has Israel had atonement for her sins (24b-c)? No.Has Israel seen everlasting righteousness (24d)? No. Paul still saw this as future for Israel (Rom. 11:25-27).Has vision and prophecy culminated (24e)? No.Has the holy of holies* been anointed yet (24f)? No.Six ReasonsReason #1*Although the phrase "most holy" has been sometimes interpreted to mean Christ's anointing (e.g., Young, The Prophecy of Daniel, 201), these are technical words always translated in the Old Testament as "holy of holies." The clear referent is the consecration of the millennial temple (cf. Ezek. 4046).540552aFor a dispensational interpretation of each of these six phrases see the exegetical outline of Daniel 9:24 on the preceding pages.223Before the Curtain Closes (9:24 NLT)A period of seventy sets of seven has been decreed for your people and your holy cityto finish their rebellion, to put an end to their sin, to atone for their guilt, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to confirm the prophetic vision, and to anoint the Most Holy Place."These were NOT fulfilled in the first centuryso the 70 weeks must have a future fulfillment540TribulationMillennium224Why the Gap?The first word of verse 26, "after" (), indicates a gap. This gap occurs after the culmination of the sixty-ninth week at the cutting off of Messiah at Christ's crucifixion after the Triumphal Entry. Six ReasonsReason #2The traditional-historical school sees Christ's baptism ending the 69 weeks and His death at the middle of the 70th week. If this were so, the text would read that the cutting off of Messiah would occur "during" or "in the midst of" the seventieth week. However, verse 26 says that several events must occur before the beginning of the 70th week, such as Jerusalems destruction and many wars. And as a climax to all his terrible deeds, he will set up a sacrilegious object that causes desecration, until the fate decreed for this defiler is finally poured out on him."226Why the Gap?The idea of gaps may seem strange to the 21st century mind, but this was not true of the Jewish mindset.

For example, Isaiah 61:1-2 records the two advents of Christ in a single context. Christ quoted the portion of this passage relating to His first advent in Luke 4:18-19, thus revealing that a separation of many years appears. Concerning the Jewish mindset, Gundry notes, "The possibility of a gap between the sixty-ninth and seventieth weeks is established by the well-accepted OT phenomenon of prophetic perspective, in which gaps such as that between the first and second advents were not perceived" (Robert H. Gundry, The Church and the Tribulation [Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 1973], 190). Six ReasonsReason #3541552aFor a dispensational interpretation of each of these six phrases see the exegetical outline of Daniel 9:24 on the preceding pages.227Why the Gap?The person who confirms the covenant in Daniel 9:27 cannot be Christ.

The "He" in this verse looks back at "the prince who is to come" in the previous verse (Titus in AD 70) as its antecedent.

Also, if Christ is the confirmer of the covenant, then what covenant did He confirm and then break? Certainly not the new covenant!Six ReasonsReason #4541552aThis covenantal perspective finds recent support by Meredith G. Kline, "The Covenant of the Seventieth Week, in The Law and the Prophets. Old Testament Studies Prepared in Honor of Oswald Thompson Allis, ed. by John H. Skilton (Nutley, NJ, 1974), 452-69, esp. 461-69; cited by Hoehner, 132.228

Temple Assault by Titus, the "ruler [who] ruler will arise whose armies will destroy the city and the Temple" (9:26) Sept. AD 70231Why the Gap?Since Christ's death did not "put an end to sacrifice and offering" (Dan. 9:27), a gap must exist between the 69th and 70th weeks.

The Jews continued the sacrificial system until God stopped their abhorrent practice with Titus' destruction of the temple in AD 70.Six ReasonsReason #5541552a232

It must have been sown up from AD 33-70Why the Gap?Parallel prophecies also have a gap:Jesus said in Matthew 24:15 that the abomination of desolation will occur after His earthly ministry. The wicked person of Daniel 9:27 has striking parallels with the future wicked man in Daniel 7:25; Revelation 12, 13, 19.The events of the second half of the 70th week (Dan. 9:27b) correlate with those of the latter half of the future Tribulation period in Rev. 13:4, 6, 12, 14-15 Six ReasonsReason #6541552a235
